Abstract

An extruded poly-[alpha]-olefin film, e.g. a polypropylene film, is heated to 40-90 C., transversely stretched at 80-110 C. with a stretching ratio of 1: 1À1 to 1:1À6, and dimensionally stabilized under conditions of total prevention of shrinkage, to 50-110 C. The films may contain additives such as lubricants, stabilizers and anti-static agents, and have preferably undergone longitudinal stretching during extrusion, and quenching at not more than 20 C. immediately after extrusion. The treated films have coefficient of friction less than 1, tensile strength in the two orthogonal directions higher than 4.0 kg./mm.2, impact strength at -10 C. of more than 3 kg. cm., tear strength balanced in both directions, low elongation values at break, good optical characteristics, and low tendency to blocking.
