Abstract
A disc brake having a U-shaped fixed support 4 and a floating caliper 2, one leg of which carries the brake-actuating means has the caliper restrained from movement outwardly of the disc by the engagement of parts 11 of the caliper with guide members 10 carried on the fixed support. The members 10 are provided on parts 7 which may be swung on pivot pins 8, when pins 9 have been removed, to allow withdrawal of the caliper. Springs 21 engage holes in the backing plates of the friction pads 23 to urge the caliper against the guide members. Alternatively, a single spring disposed at the leading edge of the pads abuts the fixed support and the caliper respectively. This spring is provided with a rubber sheath. In another embodiment either blocks of plastics material of low coefficient of friction or resilient sleeves are disposed between the caliper and the guide members 10. In another embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown) the springs 21 are omitted yielding members 41, 42 comprising a split sleeve and a rubber sheath are disposed in recesses under lugs on the caliper to urge the caliper against the guide members 210. Hydraulic actuator.-The hydraulic actuator carried in one limb of the caliper (Fig. 2, not shown) includes an automatic wear adjustment comprising a split ring 33 frictionally engaging the piston 25 and resiliently mounted on a pin 36 secured to the cylinder. A spring 35 is provided to accommodate " knock-back." The friction pads are provided with sheet metal backing plates which are apertured to accommodate a projection 18 on the piston and projections 19 on the other limb 16 of the caliper. In the embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), the backing plates are cut away to allow the friction material to abut the sides of the U-shaped aperture.
