Abstract

A rubbery ethylene-propylene copolymer is covulcanized with an isobutylene-polyunsaturated hydrocarbon copolymer using, as vulcanizing agents, an organic peroxide or perester for the ethylene-propylene copolymer and a material such as sulphur, a quinoid or a phenolic resin, for the isobutylene copolymer. The isobutylene copolymer may be an isobutylene-isoprene copolymer and specified quinoid and resin vulcanizing agents are paraquinone dioxime, dibenzoyl paraquinone dioxime, and multicyclic phenol dialcohols and salts thereof, e.g. zinc salts. Carbon black and stearic acid may be present and further vulcanizing agents and accelerators which may be included are selenium, tellurium, zinc oxide, lead oxide, tetra alkyl thiuram disulphides, benzothiazyl disulphide, tellurium diethyldithiocarbamate, selenium dimethyldithiocarbamate, zinc dibutyldithiocarbamate, stannous chloride, N-bromosuccinimide, dibromodimethyl hydantoin, polymeric 2-chloro-butadiene-1,3, chlorosulphonated polyethylene and brominated copolymers of isobutylene and isoprene. The products find application in the wire and cable industry.
