Abstract
Un artículo implantable que comprende una combinación de polietileno de peso molecular ultra-alto reticulado y vitamina E, en donde la combinación de polietileno de peso molecular ultra-alto reticulado y vitamina E tiene una relación de hinchamiento de menos de 4 y la combinación se puede obtener mediante un método que comprende las etapas de: - combinar vitamina E con polietileno de peso molecular ultra-alto para formar una combinación de polietileno de peso molecular ultra-alto, - consolidar la combinación de polietileno de peso molecular ultra-alto, e - irradiar la combinación de polietileno de peso molecular ultra-alto con radiación de haces de electrones a una velocidad de dosificación de al menos 1 megagray por hora.

Según se indica en la Tabla 1, los polvos de UHMWPE de marca GUR 1020 y GUR 1050 están disponibles de 5 Ticona GmbH, FrankfurtMain, Alemania. La vitamina E usada para las Muestras C, D y F-H era α-tocoferol obtenido de DSM Nutritional Products AG, Basilea, Suiza.
Para las muestras C, D y F-H, el α-tocoferol se disolvió en etanol en una concentración de 50 g/l y se mezcló en el UHMWPE gota a gota usando un mezclador de cono roscado de marca Nauta-Vrieco. A continuación, el etanol se retiró de la combinación de UHMWPE en un secador de vacío a 50ºC durante 6 horas, dando como resultado una
10 combinación de UHMWPE que tiene una concentración de α-tocoferol de aproximadamente 0,1% en peso. A continuación, la combinación de UHMWPE resultante se sinterizó durante 7 horas a 220ºC y 35 bar para producir placas de UHMWPE que tenían un grosor de 60 mm y un diámetro de 600 mm. La homogeneidad del α-tocoferol en la combinación de UHMWPE se midió mediante métodos de HPLC estándar y se determinó que variaba hasta +/-2% del contenido deseado.
15 Las muestras A, D y H se irradiaron usando un irradiador gamma Studer lR-168 que utiliza una fuente de radiación de Co60. Las muestras E-G e I se irradiaron usando un acelerador de electrones Rhodotron de 10 MeV disponible de IBA SA, Louvain-La-Neuve usando una graduación de potencia de 120 kW.
