10 A plague is a situation in which a living being produces economic damages, usually physical, to the interests of people such as health, cultivated plants, domestic animals, materials or natural means. Living things that can cause pests can be grouped into higher animals, microorganisms and higher plants.
15 There are products to control the pests of these living things known as pesticides. These are chemical substances or mixtures intended to kill, repel, attract, regulate or interrupt the growth of living things considered pests.
La aplicación masiva de plaguicidas era considerada como relativamente económica y altamente The massive application of pesticides was considered relatively inexpensive and highly
20 efectiva. With the passage of time it has been shown that it is a harmful method for the environment, since they do not present a specific action and can affect biodiversity and the local environment, and in the long run inefficient since living beings affected by the pesticide are They become resistant. In addition, sometimes they can be toxic to humans or other animals, such as DDT.
25 There are alternatives to the use of pesticides that include culture methods using biological controls, such as pheromones, microbial pesticides or methods of disruption of insect reproduction. The use of these methods has become widespread because they are healthier and even more effective.
Por ser productos naturales, las feromonas no presentan las consecuencias medio ambientales que suponen los tratamientos químicos debido a su no-toxicidad y a 30 One of these alternatives is pheromones, chemical substances secreted by living beings in order to cause specific behavior in other individuals, often of the same species. They are used to partially and completely monitor and control a large number of economically important insect species. Being natural products, pheromones do not present the environmental consequences of chemical treatments due to their non-toxicity and

45 can form large migratory populations of insects that feed on crops, causing large economic losses for agriculture.
The Moroccan or Mediterranean lobster, Dociostaurus maroccanus, Thunberg 1815 (Orthoptera: Acrididae) is a polyphagous species of crops and grasslands, found predominantly in
50 semi-arid steppes or semi-arid areas of the Mediterranean area, including the South of France, North Africa and the Middle East. Like other species of lobster, D. maroccanus can dramatically increase its population in a short period of time if weather conditions are favorable, causing the aggregation of individuals and the devastation of crops.
As pues, resulta de interés 55 So far, control of locust pests is practically limited to the use of chemical treatments. In addition, the identification of pheromonal compounds involved in the chemical communication of the locust plague D. maroccanus has not been described so far. Knowing the use of these compounds would be interesting for the development of new pesticide treatments that do not have the unwanted effects of the previous ones. Thus, it is of interest
60 have alternative compounds for pest control that allow selective pest management and ensure sustainable development of agriculture.
La presente invención hace referencia a compuestos útiles para atraer, repeler o controlar plagas de insectos, particularmente de plagas de la langosta marroquí D. maroccanus y otras especies de The present invention refers to compounds useful for attracting, repelling or controlling insect pests, particularly of pests of the Moroccan lobster D. maroccanus and other species of
5 langosta. 5 lobster The invention also relates to a method of attracting, monitoring and controlling other locust pests. The method includes a formulation containing the attractant or aggregator of the invention, alone or in combination with other pheromonal components or an insecticide.
The gregarious behavior shown by lobster pests suggests the possible presence of aggregation pheromones, which act by attracting both sexes of the same species towards a food source or with the purpose of reproducing. In addition, being able to have a pheromone that clearly influences the behavior of insects (especially females) of the locust plague, D. maroccanus, would imply the following advantages for crops: detection of infestation outbreaks, monitoring of adult insect populations and thus be able to predict
15 levels of infestation the following year and schedule control treatments, and control of the adult population either through confusion, inhibition, attraction and destruction or sterilization treatments of a demographically significant portion of the pest population.
The present invention describes the use of a pheromonal component emitted by the males of D. maroccanus as the main responsible for an attractive response towards males and females of this species. The compound is 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecenal, also commonly called fital.
The use of the compounds of the invention is advantageous since, currently, pest control of
25 D. maroccanus is practically limited to the use of chemical treatments. Pheromonal treatments are more natural, so they do not have the environmental consequences of chemical treatments. This is possible thanks to its non-toxicity and its application in many occasions does not require direct contact with the crop. In this way, adverse environmental effects associated with chemical treatments are avoided, such as the reduction of nitrogen fixation, the decline of pollinator species, habitat destruction and the threat of endangered species.
Además, se evita la aparición de resistencias, también asociadas a los compuestos The latter entails a loss of biodiversity that can be avoided thanks to the use of pheromonal compounds. In addition, the appearance of resistances, also associated with the compounds, is avoided
35 chemists These make the pests very difficult to control and that a new pesticide or increase the dose is necessary, which causes a worsening of the environmental effects.
Another advantage over the chemical treatments described lies in the safety of pheromonal treatments to humans and other animal species. In this way it is possible to avoid the health risks of potential crop consumers.

Fifth-stage nymphs and young adults of D. maroccanus were collected in untreated semi-arid areas of the province of Zaragoza. The different sexes and stages of development were kept separately in boxes (50x50x50 cm) at a rate of 50-100 individuals per box. The insects remained in well-ventilated rooms at 262C, a relative humidity of 5010% and under a photoperiod of light: darkness of 14:10 h. Alfalfa, grass and wheat were supplied twice a day as food.
Volatiles produced by both sexes were collected and analyzed. For this, 10-15 insects were placed in glass chambers (22x4 cm) through which a stream of pure air (350 ml / min) was circulated for periods of 4 to 24 h and the released volatiles were captured by Super adsorbent cartridges Q (porous copolymer of ethyl vinylbenzene and divinylbenzene) (30 mg; 6.0 x 6.4 mm). The experiments were conducted at least in triplicate. The adsorbed organic compounds were eluted with dichloromethane (200 [mu] I) and the resulting extracts were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The comparison of the chromatograms obtained for males and females revealed some specific differences between both sexes (Figure 1). In the samples of adult males, six absent compounds were detected in female volatiles. By comparison with retention times and mass spectra of standard compounds, the alcohols 1-tetradecanol (14: OH) and 1-hexadecanol (16: OH) and the corresponding tetradecanal aldehydes (13: CHO) and hexadecanal could be identified (15: CHO). The other two compounds, labeled 1 and 2 in Figure 1, were identified as the cis and trans isomers of 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecenal (fital), respectively (see below).
Electroanthenographic studies of the activity of male volatiles on male and female antennas showed that products of interest 1 and 2 were the only ones that gave an electro-electrographic response consisting of both males and females, thus considering as possible components pheromonal lobster D. maroccanus (Figure 2).
For the identification of both compounds a micropurification was carried out in column chromatography on silica gel of volatile extracts corresponding to approximately 300 males, obtaining about 300 ng of the products of interest with 93% of purity by CG. Figure 3A shows the chromatographic profile (left) and mass spectrum (right) of the majority component (retention time 24.82 min in HP-5MS column, compound 2), with the same fragments as those of the minor component (retention time 24.52 min in HP-5MS column, compound 1) indicating the possible existence of two isomers. From the mass spectrum and chemical ionization of the high resolution sample that indicated an exact mass of 294.26156, C20H38O was noted as the most likely molecular formula and compounds 1 and 2 were proposed as cis isomers and 3,7,11,15-tetramethyl-2-hexadecenal (fital), respectively. The identification was fully confirmed by comparison of the spectral and chromatographic characteristics with those of an authentic sample obtained by chemical synthesis (see below) (Figure 3A vs. 3B). Additionally, the hydrogenation resulting from Wolff Kishner's reduction of a sample of the natural product and the synthetic compound resulted in identical products both by gas chromatography and by mass spectrometry (Figure 3C vs 3D), corroborating that identification again.

Ejemplo 3 Actividad del fital sintético como feromona de agregación de D. maroccanus en pruebas de laboratorio Example 3 Activity of the synthetic fital as pheromone aggregation of D. maroccanus in tests of laboratory
The activity of the fital as a pheromone for aggregation of male and female adult Moroccan lobster was determined in a modified version of a previously described olfactometric bioassay
(J. Chem. Ecol., 1996, 22, 2273). (J. Chem. Ecol., 1996, 22, 2273). The olfactÃmetro, built in methacrylate, contains an experimental zone in the form of a rectangular prism (15x40x19 cm) perforated in its upper and lower part (holes of 2 mm diameter) with the exception of a central non-perforated area (8x19 cm). Below it are two chambers (5x19x19 cm), separated by a partition, where two discs of filter paper (25 mm diameter) are placed containing the product to be tested (pheromone or the like) on one side and hexane as a control on the other. For the experiments, a stream of purified air was passed through each of the chambers to be taken outside with an extractor placed at the top of the olfactometer.
In the bioassays the insects were given the control air column (without volatiles) and the air column treated with racemic synthetic fital, chiral synthetic fital ((R, R) -fital) and the saturated analog of the fital (20 µg of each). Males and females (10-15 insects) separately were placed in the olfactometer experimentation zone, and the number of them that moved to the sections that received the vapors of each of the columns after 10 was counted, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 min of exposure to them.
Insects that did not opt for any of the options remaining in the central area were excluded from the analysis. Ten replications of each trial were made, except for the chiral fital in which 6 replicas were made, always using new insects in each of them. The percentage of aggregation of the insects was calculated based on the following formula: 100 (T - C) / N where T is the number of insects that chose the treated section, C the number of insects that chose the control zone, and N the total number of insects tested. The comparison of the mean responses of the different treatments was performed by an ANOVA analysis of a tail followed by a Fisher LSD test (a = 0.05).
In the absence of attractant in both chambers, males and females were randomly distributed without showing preference for either of the two sections during the 60 min of the experiment. When the responses of males and females to two air currents were compared, one containing racemic phital ("phytal rac") and the other as a control, a clear preference was observed for the section containing the attractant (between 28% and 43% of males and between 34% and 54% of females versus 2-12% of insects that chose the control), regardless of the elapsed exposure time (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 60 min) (Figure 4). In similar experiments, insects were also shown to be preferentially added when they detected vapors from the chiral fital (19-26%) with respect to the control (2-12%). However, the hydrogenated fital ("phytal-2H") showed no aggregative effect (only 4-10% of insects chose it), which demonstrates the importance of the double bond in the natural fital structure for the activity. In general, a greater tendency of aggregation was observed in females than in males.

The effect clearly diminished after 24 and 48 hours, although after the first day of application the attractant activity was still significant (14 insects per m2 on average in the treated areas vs 4 in the control areas). No differences were observed between the two doses (100 and 1000 µg / m2). The attracted specimens of D. maroccanus corresponded to both sexes although with a higher proportion of females (78% with respect to 22% of males).
