Adaptive Hybrid Modulator for Converters of three levels.
The invention described is related, in general, with power electronics, and more In particular, it refers to a PWM modulator applicable to NPC multilevel converters ("Neutral Point Clampled", in English), referring to NPC converters, which have their scope of application in high power systems, especially for motor drives, quality improvement systems power and more recently in wind power systems.
In recent years it has experienced a significant increase in the number of applications where energy conversion is done with converters multilevel Currently, wind power is being connected to the power grid using technology based on DC / AC converters, in some cases through multilevel structures, of which distinguish three basic topologies: Converter with Fixation by Diodes ("Diode-Clamped Converter") Converter with Floating Capacities ("Flying-Capacitor Converter", in English) and Multi-level converter with two-level H-bridge inverters cascaded ("Cascaded Full-Bridge" Converter ", in English).
Of these three converter topologies multilevel the most widely studied and applied is fixation by diodes, and within it, considering that the complexity of the converter increases with the number of levels and reaching a Optimal commitment to current technology, the three-level NPC It is the usual option. Figure 1 shows a circuit three-level NPC converter; in this circuit, a midpoint (NP) which is the Neutral Point of the continuous bus ("Neutral Point", in English). The bus voltage continues V_ {bus} can be divided by two capacities (C1, C2). The circuit output voltage for each phase (v_ {a}, v_ {b}, v_ {c}), which is measured with respect to the Neutral Point (NP) can adopt three different voltage levels: V_ {bus} / 2, 0 and - V_ {bus} / 2.
Connected to the converter, a modulator device responsible for supplying the signals suitable modulators for each phase of the three-phase system of the NPC converter The result of comparing modulating signals with triangular or carrier signals determines the state off / on "on / off" of the power elements of the converter. The modulator is designed to calculate the times of "on / off" status of each power element, so that the modulator should get that at the static converter output a set of three-phase voltages appears whose components fundamental are those defined by the control. It also pursues to achieve features such as low distortion harmonic at the outputs, minimum switching losses and the total or partial elimination of voltage oscillations in the Neutral Point (NP) of the continuous bus.
Today, there are different techniques of modulation that allow switching the power elements with the in order to obtain the correct functioning of the converters static In particular, according to the switching strategy chosen, it is possible to get low oscillations NP point frequency of three-level NPC converters have greater or lesser amplitude and that the switching losses are older or younger Modulation strategies have been classified in two large blocks depending on the switching frequency of The switches: low frequency and high frequency.
In general, the strategies of High frequency switching are the most used. At the same time, these can be classified into carrier-based modulations and in vector modulations. Concerning carrier-based or SPWM modulation ("Pulse-Width Sinusoidal Modulation ", in English), are characterized by their simplicity and good results. Its operating principle is based on the comparison between sinusoidal reference signals (with or without superposition of a homopolar component) and a carrier signal triangular of greater frequency. In the particular case of multilevel converters, normally there is a number of triangular carriers equal to the number of levels of the converter minus one Therefore, in the case of the three-way NPC converter levels two carrier signals are used.
Sin embargo, el gran inconveniente de esta técnica es el hecho de que aumenta la frecuencia de conmutación media de los transistores del convertidor en un 33% respecto a la modulación SPWM.A specific carrier-based high frequency modulation technique is the one that uses two modulating signals for each phase, known as DSPWM modulation "Double-Signal Pulse-Width Modulation", in English) [see "Fast-processing modulation strategy for the neutral -point-clamped converter with total elimination of the low-frequency voltage oscillations in the neutral point, "by J. Pou et al ., IEEE Industrial Electronics conference (IECON'05), pp. 1054-1059 Raleigh, NC, USA, Nov. 6-10, 2005.]. This modulation has the ability to completely eliminate low frequency voltage oscillations from the NP point. The algorithm is based on two carriers, it is not necessary to perform calculations of complex trigonometric angles and ratios. This strategy manages to eliminate intrinsically the low frequency oscillations in the NP by imposing zero on the average value of the current in the NP calculated on each work cycle. It also makes a very simple treatment of modulating signals, spectacularly easy to implement. However, the great drawback of this technique is the fact that it increases the average switching frequency of the converter transistors by 33% with respect to SPWM modulation.
The present invention comes to solve the problem described above, constituting a modulator adaptive hybrid for multilevel converters of the NPC type, of simple and compact construction, which is versatile because it offers the possibility to change online ("on-line") and in a simple way the modulation technique that is appropriate Apply to this multilevel converter.
It is therefore an object of the invention to allow vary, automatically or manually, the modulating signals to apply to a multilevel converter, providing in the same Modulator various modulation techniques.
It is also the object of the invention to prioritize the minus one of the quality criteria of the output signal that select from the switching loss reduction of the multilevel converter, minimization of voltage oscillations at the Neutral Point (NP) of the continuous bus or a balance between Both criteria.
Also another object of the invention is to control the maximum amplitude of the voltage oscillations in the NP or DC bus voltage (V_ {bus}), to be able to dimension in The design phase of the multilevel converter components (transistors, diodes and capacitors) to ensure that said converter is able to withstand the maximum voltage set by the designer.
The modulation based on the The modulator proposed here is the DSPWM. Taking into account that DSPWM modulation is characterized by the total elimination of oscillations in the NP of the continuous bus, as mentioned previously, a hybrid modulation is conceived here that allows modify the modulating signals generated by the DSPWM technique of so that, at the cost of allowing oscillations in the NP, the switching losses
For any working condition of the converter, this modulator is able to limit to a value determined the amplitude of the voltage oscillations in the NP of the Continuous bus, in an easy way: from a variable of continuous control, which hereafter is designated by the letter D.
Thus, apart from the already known DSPWM modulation, the modulator of the invention provides this hybrid modulation which generates a mixture or combination of modulation techniques that makes it possible to find an optimal compromise between reducing converter switching losses and minimize oscillations in the NP. The modulator includes, among others, the following elements:
A connected hybrid modulation generator to the base generator and configured to generate the final modulation to from the two initial modulating signals coming from the DSPWM modulation base generator, so that these signals final modulators are created according to a hybrid modulation based on modifying the maximum amplitude of the oscillations of the NP voltage.
A signal amplitude limiter final modulators generated by said hybrid generator.
The modulation applied by the hybrid generator it is based on modifying the amplitudes of the modulating signals p and n (these are between 0 and 1 for "p" and 0 and -1 for "n". Such voltage amplitudes, referred to as Av_ {ip} and Av_ {in} (where i = {a, b, c} for an output DC / AC converter three-phase) are calculated by said hybrid modulation generator so that the modulation signals are locked to zero for longer. For this, a control variable is used continued, which in the following expression (1.1) is referred to as the Lim variable, which in turn depends on the modulation index m applied and the value of a parameter or setpoint D, which can be selected manually or automatically, being:
\vskip1.000000\baselineskip\ vskip1.000000 \ baselineskip
\vskip1.000000\baselineskip\ vskip1.000000 \ baselineskip
It should be noted that during the intervals in which a modulator is locked to zero the frequency of switching of the power elements (transistors) of the converter is smaller; hence the interest in forcing this interlocking
De esta manera, para valores altos de D la modulación final se aproxima fundamentalmente a la SPWM y para valores de D bajos a la DSPWM.In short, based on the fact that the DSPWM base modulation totally eliminates oscillations in the neutral point (NP) of the converter, hybrid modulation gets with the appropriate variation of parameter D control the amplitude Maximum low frequency voltage oscillations in the NP of the converter for any working condition. When will you assigns the zero value to parameter D, the modulator of the invention It behaves according to the known DSPWM modulation, since only the base generator operates; while for a maximum value of parameter D (for example, defining D \ in [0,1]) you get final modulating signals corresponding to the modulation SPWM (D = 1) and for the intermediate values that the parameter D, the hybrid generator acts by providing a mixture of both modulations (0 <D <1). In this way, for values high of D the final modulation fundamentally approximates the SPWM and for low D values to the DSPWM.
Adicionalmente, a fin de evitar distorsión en las tensiones de salida, las amplitudes Av_{ip} y Av_{in}, calculadas según la anterior expresión (1.1) para un valor determinado del parámetro D y del índice de modulación m (por tanto, de la variable Lim), se aplican a sus respectivas señales de modulación con signo opuesto, de modo que el algoritmo final del generador/calculador de la modulación híbrida queda de la siguiente forma:Additionally, in order to avoid distortion in the output voltages, the amplitudes Av_ {ip} and Av_ {in}, calculated according to the previous expression (1.1) for a value determined from parameter D and modulation index m (therefore, of the variable Lim), are applied to their respective signals of modulation with opposite sign, so that the final algorithm of the hybrid modulation generator / calculator is as follows shape:
It is important to clarify that the base generator of the DPWM modulation comprises a compensator of the continuous bus voltages (such as the one designed in the aforementioned "Fast-processing modulation strategy for the neutral-point-clamped converter with total elimination of the low -frequency voltage oscillations in the neutral point ", by J. Pou et al ., IEEE Industrial Electronics conference (IECON'05), pp. 1054-1059 Raleigh, NC, USA, Nov. 6-10, 2005.]. Type of compensators is absolutely compatible with the modulator of the present invention.
For the maximum value of D, as stated above corresponds to the case in which the modulator behaves of according to the SPWM technique, the modulating signals obtained by This technique includes a homopolar component (v_ {0}), that is, which is added to the three-phase system signals, generated from according to the following equation:
This allows to achieve maximum range of linear operation of the modulator acting as SPWM and equalize it with the linear operating range of the base generator of DSPWM modulation.
The final hybrid modulation is adaptable or modifiable for the purpose of reducing losses of DSPWM modulation switching or regulate the amplitude maximum of the oscillations of the NP of the continuous bus, Increasing the switching losses of the SPWM modulation by attenuating voltage oscillations in the NP. Depending on value given to parameter D is achieved by techniques linear or non-linear, one of these two objectives.
Another possibility is the use of an external control loop, connected to the converter input multilevel, which measures the oscillations in the NP by means of voltage sensors and are compared with a swing reference desired maximum, determining based on the result of that comparison the degree of the final mixture of each technique of modulation which makes it possible to limit the maximum amplitude of said oscillations This external control loop provides a signal that properly modifies the final modulating signals, properly adjusting the switching strategy of the converter power elements. This entails the advantage of know the maximum voltage that these elements must withstand power in blocking state and bus capacitors continues, with what the designer is offered the possibility of choose the power elements and capacitors properly of the converter in the design phase itself.

In view of Figure 2, a practical implementation of the invention as a modulator system adaptive hybrid (6) applied to a multilevel converter (15), specifically and for example a three-level NPC converter like the one already shown in Figure 1 that connects through respective exit points (a, b, c). for each electrical phase of output voltage (v_ {a}, v_ {b}, v_ {c}) at a network load electric (16). Within the system block scheme that the Figure 2, there is a first block of the hybrid adaptive modulator (6) representing a base generator (1) of the DSPWM modulation used as the basis of a second generator, hybrid generator (3), responsible for calculating a hybrid modulation based on a control parameter (D). The base generator (1) generates in this case two initial modulating signals (2) per phase, for the converter (15) three-phase, which pass to the hybrid generator input (3) which, in turn, generates the final modulating signals (5) by phase from an algorithm based on loss reduction that it depends on the control parameter (D) that is also delivered, by means of a switch or selection device (10) through the which is chosen manually (10A) or automatic (10B) to give the value of said parameter (D), as input (9) to the hybrid generator (3). According to the value of this control parameter (D), considering for example that D \ in [0,1], the hybrid generator (3) modifies the initial modulating signals (2) delivered by the base generator (1) to provide new forms in the signals modulation ends (5) that reduce switching losses to cost of allowing oscillations at the neutral point (NP) of the bus keep going.
The hybrid adaptive modulator (6) in addition includes a block connected to the output of the hybrid generator (3) amplitude limiter (4), which protects the system by maintaining the final modulating signals (5) within the allowed margins. The output of the modulation limiter is applicable to the input of a digital signal generator block (11), connected to the converter (15), which switches the power elements that has said converter (15).
Este par de señales de tensión (v_{c1}, v_{c2}) se adquieren mediante sendos sensores de tensión (S4, S5), en un bloque sensor (12) cuya salida (13) se conecta al bloque calculador de amplitud (7).As stated, there are two alternatives to apply a certain value of parameter (D): the first is of manually (10A) and the second is automatically (10B), online, by means of a controller (8) that can be based on techniques linear or nonlinear. The controller input (8), which regulates the amplitude of the oscillations at the neutral point (NP) of the converter (15), corresponds to the voltage output (Ao) of a amplitude calculator block (7) and is compared with a voltage of reference (V_ {ref}) corresponding to the maximum amplitude value preset In turn, the calculator block input of amplitude (7) of voltage oscillations are at least two signals of voltage (v_ {c1}, v_ {c2}), for this case of NPC converter of three levels, which correspond to the voltages of some capacitors (C1, C2) of the continuous bus (14). This pair of voltage signals (v_ {c1}, v_ {c2}) are acquired by means of two sensors voltage (S4, S5), in a sensor block (12) whose output (13) is connect to the amplitude calculator block (7).
In this particular application to a converter (15) of the three-level NPC type, Figures 3a and 3b respectively they represent the waveforms, defined as voltage vector with an amplitude represented on a vertical axis and an angle represented on the horizontal axis, corresponding to the modulating signals of one of the three phases generated according:
- --
- la técnica de modulación SPWM, con D=1, que se representa en ambas Figuras 3a y 3b como una línea discontinua y la modulación DSPWM, con D=0, que se representa con una línea continua en la Figura 3a;the SPWM modulation technique, with D = 1, which is represented in both Figures 3a and 3b as a dashed line and DSPWM modulation, with D = 0, which is represented with a continuous line in the Figure 3rd;
- --
- la modulación HPWM (modulación híbrida), i.e., D = 0.5, que se representa con una línea continua en las curvas de la Figura 3b.the HPWM modulation (hybrid modulation), i.e., D = 0.5, which represents with a continuous line in the curves of the Figure 3b
The loss ratio of the modulation technique SPWM versus hybrid modulation for different values of the control parameter (D) is reflected in Figure 4, indicating on the horizontal axis the angle of the current offset (i_ {a}, i_ {b}, i_ {c} injected by the converter (15) to the load (16) and in the vertical axis the ratio of modulation losses SPWM hybrid / losses. These losses are valid for any modulation index (m), since they are independent of it. Be appreciate that the total loss ratio depends fundamentally of the phase of the current (i_ {a}, i_ {b}, i_ {c}) with respect to the fundamentals of tension generated at the outputs of the converter (15). For applications that work with a factor of almost unitary power, these losses are minimal. May Note that with control parameter values (D) less than 0.5, D <0.5, hybrid modulation losses are lower at 4%.
Los valores utilizados en esta simulación son los siguientes:Figure 5a illustrates the results of simulation of the online variation of parameter (D) by means of an external control loop to which the controller (8) belongs. The Values used in this simulation are as follows:

This Figure 5a shows that the oscillations are controlled and maintained at the desired amplitude of reference voltage (Vref), for example: Vref = 5 V, Vref = 20 and Vref = 40 V. Figure 5b shows the follow-up of the oscillations against a reference voltage (Vref) sinusoidal.
Los valores utilizados son los siguientes:Figure 6 illustrates the results Experiments of the in-line variation of parameter (D) with the Manual mode. The values used are as follows:

The different details (a), (b), (c) and (d) of Figure 6 shows the waveforms of the oscillations in the neutral point (NP) of the continuous bus (14) and the composite voltage between two phases according to experimental results corresponding to the manual control system (10A) to give the parameter value (D). Specifically, Figure 6a corresponds to the SPWM modulation, i.e. D = 1; Figure 6b corresponds to the hybrid modulation with D = 0.5; Figure 6c, to modulation hybrid with D = 0.75; finally in Figure 6d the DSPWM base modulation, i.e, D = 0. It should be noted that with the hybrid modulation and D = 0.5 the oscillations are attenuated in approximately 70% compared to the SPWM technique, apart from that its increased losses for almost unitary power factors not exceeds 4%, as shown in Figure 4.
