Abstract
Glass fiber composition containing silica, alumina, sodium and potassium oxides, magnesia and boron oxide provides bio-soluble fibers for glass wools that, according to the so-called 'KI index', have a potential for possible lung damage. The bio-solubility (or bio-degradability) of the fibers confirms their harmless nature. The biosoluble glass fiber composition comprises (in weight %): 60-70 SiO2, 1-3 Al2O3, more than 17 Na2O+K2O, at most 8 CaO, 2-4 MgO, less than 10.5 CaO+MgO, more than 1.65 R2O/RO, and 4.5-8 B2O3, where RO is the sum of oxides of elements of column 2A of the Periodic Table and R2O is the sum of oxides of elements of column 1A of the Periodic Table. The composition also includes up to about 2 weight % of impurities and other conventional impurities such as Fe2O3, but excluding P2O5 and SO3. The composition satisfies the following equation: %Na2O+%K2O+%CaO+%MgO+%B2O3+%BaO-2 x %Al2O3 at most 33, preferably at most 32. The composition has a maximum liquidus temperature (viscosity = 10 power 2.5 poise) of 1050-1170 degrees C, drop temperature (viscosity = 10 power 3 poise) of 950-1050 degrees C, and devitrification temperature of 700-780 degrees C. An Independent claim is given for a glass wool product containing the above composition.
