Abstract

A friction clutch comprises an automatic wear compensating arrangement having two relatively rotatable rings 3, 4 with mutually opposed annular inclined surfaces which are pretensioned by a tension spring 8 such that they are relatively rotatable to adjust their combined axial dimension and take up wear of friction linings 9, 11. The spring 8 is conformed to shape or bent by at least one axial projection 5, integrally formed on pressure plate 1, which forces the spring 8 radially outwards so that it does not impede other components, eg spacer bolts 7. This results in a single spring 8 having an extended length being used, thereby saving on fitting time and improving limits of adjustment. To prevent the spring 8 from moving radially outwards, due to centrifugal forces, a support means (14, fig 3) may be inserted between the spring 8 and rings 3, 4. Pressure plate 1 is pressed against clutch disc 10 by a diaphragm spring 6 supported on a casing 2.
