Abstract

Variable focal length, lightweight, flexible reflector for use in optical and antenna systems, consisting of a thin, uniformly stretched membrane (1) covering the circular aperture of a receiver recess (3) which contains a gas inside (5). The membrane is made from a flexible material with a very smooth surface with a metal deposit on the side facing outwards from the receiver to give it its reflective properties. The membrane assumes a concave curvature (2) when air is drawn out of the receiver through a hole in the receiver for this purpose (4).Depending on how closely the elastic properties of the membrane approach those of an ideal elastomer, a curvature is produced that will focus certain bandwidths of electromagnetic waves. The focal length of the device varies according to the depression produced in the receiver in relation to the exterior.
