Abstract

Process for obtaining magnesium at atmospheric pressure by the reduction of its oxide using reducing agents containing aluminium in an induction furnace. The process is performed in an induction furnace which is sealed from the atmosphere but connected to a condensation chamber through a pipe, the furnace being fed with oxidising agents which contain magnesium oxide and with reducing agents which contain aluminium, and heating the mixture of oxidising and reducing agents through transferring heat from the aluminium which is in turn heated as a result of the movement of its electrons caused by the existence of the alternating magnetic field of the induction furnace. Once heated the reacting mixture produces magnesium in the form of vapour, which moves from the reaction zone to the condensation chamber, and condenses there.
