Abstract

The steam iron is equipped with an electrically heatable soleplate which has an evaporator chamber. Arranged at a distance above this is a handle integrated into a housing, and above the soleplate there is a water tank arranged in the housing. From this water tank, which has an adjustable drip valve at the bottom, water can be supplied to the evaporator chamber via the drip valve which comprises a spring-loaded valve needle, the valve needle engaging in closed position in a valve seat which projects into the evaporator chamber. In order, with the drip valve completely open, to prevent the evaporator chamber cooling down to such an extent that the water passing into the evaporator chamber is not in every case completely evaporated, the valve seat can be closed off irrespectively of the position of the valve needle by a sealing member which is mounted on the soleplate and supported in the closing direction by a temperature-controlled memory actuating element. <IMAGE>
