Abstract

Sodium ions present in a glass make it more difficult to form a pyrolytic coating and can also poison the latter. To obviate these problems, a pyrolytically coated flat glass contains sodium, but is de-alkalised, so that the glass has, in the pyrolytically coated state, a surface layer of 1 mu m thickness, which is depleted of sodium in a quantity of at least 5 mg of Na<+> per m<2> as compared with the layer immediately below, of the same thickness. To effect such a de-alkalisation, the glass can be exposed to an atmosphere containing an acidic gas such as sulphur trioxide, its temperature being above 200@C and it remaining exposed to this atmosphere for a period during which, or at least at the end of which, its temperature is below 350@C. The de-alkalised glass is then washed, reheated and contacted at a temperature of at least 400@C with the coating precursor material, which reacts pyrolytically in contact with the glass and forms a pyrolytic coating thereon.
