Abstract
A tool for processing hardened polyurethane foam, used in particular for installing window and door joinery and insulation works.
Description
- The utility model relates to a tool for processing hardened polyurethane foam, used in particular for installing window and door joinery and insulation works.
- Polyurethane foams are commonly used in construction and finishing works, in particular for installing window and door joinery, as well as insulating roofs and buildings. They are characterised by the so-called post-expansion, that is a 30-100% increase in volume after application in the target place, which ultimately creates a non-uniform surface that requires levelling.
- Various types of workshop tools used in construction and finishing works are known and commonly used for processing various materials, including hardened polyurethane foam. The basic solution are snap-off knives used for cutting wallpapers, carpets, and insulating materials. Due to their sharp tip, they allow precise cutting of the material and obtaining the desired shape, especially when cutting perpendicularly to the surface of a given material. However, because the blade is too short and inflexible and does not run parallel to the plane, using these tools for parallel cuts to level the surface of the applied hardened polyurethane foam poses many difficulties. Moreover, due to the lack of a separate handle, they are uncomfortable and unergonomic, as well as unsafe, because they break uncontrollably during use or during standard breaking off of a blunt fragment.
- Tools designed for cutting insulation, such as mineral wool or polystyrene, are also available, which have an ergonomic handle, but they are characterised by high stiffness, which means that, when they are used to cut the foam applied in the joint, these knives do not cut the foam in a way that allows subsequent application of sealant. Additionally, these tools have serrated blades that leave a jagged surface that is unsuitable for applying a liquid foil layer that requires a smooth surface.
- A utility model is known from Chinese Patent Description
CN201776764U , comprising a special knife set for cutting foam plastic, which includes at least five knives used in combination, wherein each knife is provided with a blade and a handle. The special knife set is comprised of at least a general-purpose knife for trimming, a serrated drilling knife, a special knife for emptying cavities, a special knife for chamfering, and a special bevel knife for shaving. However, due to their unergonomic handle and a blade that is too short and does not provide sufficient flexibility, this set is not suitable for levelling the surface of insulating materials, especially hardened polyurethane foam covered with a layer of liquid foil. - The object of the utility model is creating a tool dedicated to processing hardened polyurethane foam by window and door joinery installers, which is reusable, has a fixed, long and flexible blade with a tip enabling precise processing of the foam and embedded in a safe, ergonomic handle.
- The tool for processing hardened polyurethane foam according to the utility model is comprised of a shorter profiled handle and a longer blade, and is characterised by that the cutting edge has a smooth cutting portion with an acute angle at the end. The cutting portion has a thickness and height that decrease inversely with the length.
- It is preferred for the spine of the blade to end in an obtuse angle with a rounded edge.
- Additionally, it is preferred for the blade to be made of steel which is climb milled and vacuum-hardened.
- This structure of the tool provides progressive flexibility (the knife is stiff near the handle and flexible near the tip) which makes the cutting portion flexible and unbreakable, making it possible to cut the hardened foam parallelly to the plane effectively and evenly. Combining the flexibility and hardness of the cutting portion allows the knife to bend and to adjust to hard-to-reach surfaces of a window frame, a wall. The above features allow making a precise cut needed, for example, for application of liquid sealant. By using a suitable climb milled steel and a double vacuum-hardening process, the tool does not deform and returns to its original shape despite being strongly bent during cutting. Additionally, due to the acute angle at the end of the cutting portion, it is easier to reach corners and hard-to-reach places, whereas the rounded obtuse angle on the spine of the blade is safe for the user. The handle of the tool is shaped to resemble the grip of a hand, which in turn protects the hand from slipping onto the cutting portion and makes the tool safe for the user.
- The object of the utility model is shown in a drawing, in which
fig. 1 shows a side view of the tool;fig. 2 shows a view of the tool from the side of the cutting portion;fig. 3 shows the state of the art in a form of commonly known and used tools. - The tool for processing hardened polyurethane foam is constructed from a profiled handle 1 made of plastic and a
blade 2 made of steel which is climb milled and vacuum-hardened, which prevents permanent deformation of the blade during use. The cutting edge of theblade 2 is provided with a smooth cutting portion 3 which has a thickness and height decreasing with length providing high flexibility. The cutting edge of theblade 2 ends with an acute angle 4 of 72 degrees which allows reaching hard-to-reach places. The spine of theblade 2 ends with anobtuse angle 5 which provides safety for the user.
