Definitions

  • This invention relates to garment care devices, in particular for generating and delivering steam to a garment.
  • Garment steaming systems are used to remove creases from garments and fabric, such as clothing and bedding.
  • garment steaming systems comprise a main body, or base unit, having a water reservoir, a hand-held garment steamer, and a hose which connects the base unit to the hand-held garment steamer.
  • the base unit comprises a steam generator, and steam is delivered to the hand-held garment steamer using a steam hose, for delivery to the fabric to be treated.
  • water is fed from the water reservoir in the base unit into the hand-held garment steamer at which it is converted into steam.
  • the steam generating chamber When the steam generating chamber is in the hand-held garment steamer, it has to be smaller than one located in the base unit. If the tap water is hard, the operating life of such a steam generating chamber is short due to the steam generating chamber becoming contaminated with scale. As scale builds up, internal pressures may rise.
  • the leaked steam can lead to a reduced creepage distance.
  • condensation of steam onto components that carry a high voltage can cause a breakdown or reduction of dielectric separation between the electrical supply terminals (live/neutral and earth). This may result in a high voltage failure whereby the earthed metal parts that are exposed to the user may carry a high leakage current. The user may then be subjected to an electric shock hazard when the exposed metal part is touched.
  • the steam leakage may also result in corrosion of metal components.
  • Components that require movement of metal parts such as the bimetal temperature sensor of of a thermostat, are at risk of becoming stuck permanently due to corrosion. This for example can lead to a thermostat failing to cut off the circuit when the temperature rises beyond the rated temperature, and hence can result in abnormal heating that may cause a fuse to blow.
  • the condensation of steam onto a printed circuit board may also lead to a short circuit of certain components that results in malfunction of the product.
  • Such products include garment steamers as discussed above, but also steam irons.
  • US 5 121 464 discloses a steamer in which a vaporizing chamber is covered with a cover and also a heat proof shield to protect an outer casing from heating.
  • a garment care device comprising:
  • This garment care device has a first cover which closes the steam chamber and a second cover to create an enclosed compartment into which any steam leakage from the steam chamber is collected. This enables a leak from the steam chamber to be contained so that it cannot flow to areas which may present a hazard.
  • the device may further comprise an outlet vent arranged in the housing, in communication with the enclosed compartment.
  • a sealing paste is for example located where the first cover closes the steam chamber.
  • the sealing paste may develop a leak over time, particularly if there is an increased pressure in the stream chamber, for example caused by partial blockages of fluid passageways over time.
  • the steam chamber comprises an outer wall, and the second cover is fluidly sealed on the outer wall.
  • the second cover is for example sealed over the same surface as the first cover, but it extends beyond the first cover so that the first cover seal, e.g. the sealing paste, is within the outer periphery of the second cover. This provides a compact arrangement.
  • a sealing gasket is arranged between the outer wall and the second cover.
  • the sealing gasket closes the enclosed compartment.
  • the sealing gasket may be axially compressed or radially compressed to create a seal.
  • the sealing gasket may be an integral part of the second cover, for example the second cover may be formed of rubber material. Alternatively, the sealing gasket may be a separate component.
  • the first cover may be mounted over the outer wall and the sealing gasket then extends around the outer periphery of the first cover.
  • a water inlet nozzle may be provided for delivering water to the steam generator, wherein the water inlet passes through the second cover.
  • the second cover thus fits over and around the water inlet nozzle.
  • the sealing gasket for example extends around (the combination of) the water inlet and the first cover.
  • the water inlet nozzle passes through the first cover so that the first cover surrounds the water inlet nozzle.
  • a second seal extends around the water inlet nozzle and through the first cover (thereby sealing the steam chamber around the water inlet nozzle), and the second cover comprises an opening for fitting over the water inlet nozzle.
  • the use of the second cover does not require the water inlet nozzle to be repositioned; it may enter the steam generating chamber from above, through the second cover.
  • the device may further comprise a tube for fluidly connecting the inside of the enclosed compartment to the outlet vent.
  • the outlet vent may positioned at any desired location and facing in any desired direction by using a suitable tube.
  • the second cover for example comprises a release opening, wherein the tube is connected between the release opening and the outlet vent.
  • the release opening can be designed as part of the second cover.
  • the first and second covers are for example arranged facing on a cover part of the housing and the outlet vent is arranged facing a base part of the housing.
  • the second cover is made of a (rigid) heat resistant plastic material.
  • the gasket is then sandwiched between the second cover and a main body of the steam generator.
  • the second cover is made of a heat resistant silicon rubber material.
  • the material of the cover itself can function as the sealing gasket.
  • the enclosed compartment for example has a volume in the range 30 to 200 cm 3 for example 40 to 100 cm 3 .
  • the second cover is for example spaced from the first cover by a distance in the range 1 to 10 mm, for example 2 to 5 mm.
  • the device may further comprise a water reservoir, and a pump for pumping water to the steam generator, wherein the water reservoir and the pump are in the housing.
  • the device may be fully integrated into a hand-held unit.
  • the invention also provides a garment steaming system, comprising:
  • the invention is used within the steamer head of a stand type steaming system.
  • the invention provides a garment care device which comprises a housing and a steam generator arranged in the housing for generating steam.
  • the steam generator has a steam chamber and a first cover for closing the steam chamber.
  • an outlet vent is in communication with the enclosed compartment, so that any collected steam can be vented to the outside.
  • the garment care device in one set of examples comprises a hand-held garment steamer, which may either be a self-contained unit, or else it may form part of a stand-type garment steaming system.
  • a hand-held garment steamer which may either be a self-contained unit, or else it may form part of a stand-type garment steaming system.
  • the invention will be explained with reference to a garment steamer and purely by way of example with reference to a stand type garment steamer.
  • FIG. 1 shows a known stand-type garment steaming system 10 comprising a garment care device in the form of a hand-held garment steamer 12 and a base unit 14.
  • the base unit 14 has a reservoir 16 for storing and supplying water to the hand-held garment steamer 12 for conversion into steam.
  • the base unit 14 is connected to the hand-held garment steamer 1 by a hose 18.
  • the hose 18 is flexible and encloses at least a tube for supplying water from the reservoir 16 to a water inlet 13, of the hand-held garment steamer 12.
  • the hose 18 may also carry power cables (not shown) to provide a heater of the hand-held garment steamer with electricity.
  • the garment steaming system 10 further comprises a stand 20 on which to hang a garment to be steamed.
  • the stand 20 extends perpendicularly from the base unit 14.
  • the stand 20 comprises a hanging element 22 such as, for example, a hook.
  • the invention relates in particular to the design of the hand-held garment steamer 12.
  • An example of a known design is shown in Figure 2 , with a cover in a removed position.
  • the garment steamer 12 comprises a housing 30 and a steam generator arranged in the housing for generating steam.
  • the steam generator is shown generally as 32.
  • the housing 30 surrounds the steam generator 32, and in this example it has a base part 30a, a cover part 30b and a front part 30c which is the steam delivery face of the housing.
  • the housing 30a and 30b is typically plastic and it provides thermal insulation so that the outer surface of the housing is not hot.
  • the front part 30c which is also the soleplate, can be plastic or metal for example aluminium.
  • FIG. 3 shows a close up view of the steam generator 32. It comprises a steam chamber which is covered by a first cover 40.
  • the first cover is a stamped part.
  • the steam chamber has a water inlet nozzle 42 for providing water to the steam generator, wherein the water inlet projects from an outer wall of the steam generator. The water is supplied to a heater of the steam generator, and the generated steam is released from a steam delivery face of the hand-held garment steamer.
  • the first cover 40 is fixed to an underlying body of the steam generator.
  • a sealing paste is typically used to seal the interface between the first cover and the main body of the steam generator, which is typically an aluminum heater block.
  • the sealing paste is applied after the fastening process (rivets or screws) to assemble the first cover onto the heater block.
  • the sealing paste 44 forms a closed shape over the interface between the first cover 40 and the heater block.
  • Figure 4 shows a cross section view along A-A in Figure 3 in the region 46.
  • the heater is shown as a heating element 50 embedded in an aluminum heater block 52.
  • a steam chamber 45 is defined above the heater and beneath the first cover.
  • the first cover 40 sits on a lip at the top of the heater block 52 and is screwed or riveted down.
  • the sealing paste 44 is provided over the join.
  • the invention provides a solution for containing any leaked steam, and directs it to a designated vent.
  • Figure 5 shows steam escape passages 60 which can arise when the pressure build up explained above occurs, in the cross section of Figure 3 .
  • Figure 6 shows the steam generator and the front part 30c of the housing. It shows that the steam escape passages 60 may condense on any surface. As explained above, this can result in a reduced creepage distance which may for example result in the breakdown or a significant reduction of the dielectric separation between the live neutral electrical supply terminals and earth. Corrosion may result and components that require movement of metal parts may then fail. For example, a thermostat failure will result in abnormal heating that may cause a fuse to blow.
  • Figure 6 shows the electrical terminal arrangement 70, comprising a live pin and a neutral pin.
  • Figure 7 shows that if condensate 72 forms for example on the live pin, a conductive layer may cause a breakdown between the live and neutral pins or between the live pin and earth (the body of the steam generator).
  • the user is likely to be totally unaware of the steam leakage issue as the steam generator is completely enclosed by the external housing. Condensed water may seep out from a drainage hole of the housing but it may not be obvious enough for user to know that steam has leaked from the steam generator. The user may therefore continue to use the product as long as it is still generating steam from the outlet steam vents. Continuously using the product may subject user to a high voltage risk.
  • Figure 8 shows a modification to the design described above in accordance with one example of the invention.
  • a gasket 80 is formed around the sealing paste 44.
  • the gasket forms a closed annulus extending around the outside of the ring of sealing paste 44.
  • the gasket is covered by a second cover (shown and described below) arranged over the first cover and sealed over the gasket 80. It is thereby sealed over the first cover.
  • the second cover thereby creates an enclosed compartment between the first cover and the second cover.
  • the enclosed compartment does not contain any electrical components so that there is no risk of electrical hazard caused by steam which has leaked past the first cover.
  • the enclosed compartment is used to define in a known way where such steam leakage will collect and also where it will dissipate.
  • the second cover is fixed over the first cover with a small spacing between them.
  • the enclosed compartment has a generally constant height and conforms in shape to the shape of the first cover.
  • the outer periphery of the enclosed compartment is sealed around the seal of the first cover.
  • a further gasket 82 is provided around the water inlet nozzle 42.
  • the same gasket may seal the steam chamber around the water inlet nozzle and seal the second cover around the water inlet nozzle.
  • the compartment is vented to the outside by an outlet vent, discussed further below.
  • the garment care device thus has a first cover which closes the steam chamber and a second cover to create an enclosed compartment into which any steam leakage from the steam chamber is collected. Thus, the steam leakage is contained.
  • the gasket 80 is provided over a top outer wall 84 of the steam chamber so that the compartment is sealed between the second cover and that top outer wall 84.
  • the first cover is also mounted over the same top outer wall and the gasket 80 extends around the outer periphery of the first cover.
  • the first cover seal i.e. the sealing paste, is within the outer periphery of the gasket and hence within the outer periphery of the second cover.
  • the first cover may be fixed in place before the second cover, and using different fixings.
  • the first and second covers may instead be secured to the underlying heating block by the same fixings.
  • Figure 8 shows a set of six fixings 86 (screws or rivets) by which the first cover 40 is mounted to the heating block of the steam generator.
  • these fixings 86 are in place before the gasket 80 and second cover are applied.
  • the gasket may be axially compressed or radially compressed to create a seal.
  • Figure 9 shows the design of Figure 8 with the second cover 90 in place.
  • the second cover 90 is secured by a separate set of five screw fastenings 92 which couple the second cover to the heater block. This provides an even all round fastening to compress the gasket uniformly.
  • the second cover applies axial compression to the gasket, thus sealing the entire top space between the first cover and the gasket from the surroundings.
  • This fully sealed enclosed compartment is used to contain steam if it leaks through the first cover, i.e., through the sealing paste.
  • the compartment formed for example has a height in the range 1mm to 10mm and a volume in the range 30 cm 3 to 200cm 3 .
  • the second cover is for example made of a heat resistant plastic material.
  • the second cover may be made of a heat resistant silicon rubber material.
  • the second cover 90 has an opening 94 for sliding over the water inlet nozzle 42, and a seal is formed by means of the second gasket 82.
  • the second cover 90 in some examples also has a release opening which couples to a steam escape nozzle 96. There may be more than one release opening.
  • This arrangement means that steam leaked from the steam generator past the first cover will be contained in the sealed enclosed compartment, thus preventing steam from condensing anywhere inside the housing of the appliance.
  • a release opening it may for example be connected to an exit tube, so that leaked steam is directed to an outlet vent.
  • the outlet vent can then be designed and positioned so that a steam flow is easily noticed (and distinguished from the functional steam output) by the user.
  • Figure 10 shows the device of Figure 9 from another angle.
  • the top image shows a tube coupling 100 which leads to an outlet vent.
  • the bottom image shows a tube 102 extending between the steam escape nozzle 96 (at the release opening of the top cover) and the tube coupling 100 for fluidly connecting the inside of the enclosed compartment to the outlet vent.
  • the outlet vent is on an opposite side to the first and second covers.
  • the first and second covers are arranged at a top region of the outer housing and the outlet vent is arranged at a bottom region of the outer housing.
  • Figure 11 shows the bottom region of the outer housing.
  • Figure 11 also shows the steam exit face 110.
  • the outlet vent is in the region 112, which is shown enlarged in the right image.
  • the outlet vent 114 faces downwardly. It is set back from the steam exit face and directed in a different direction e.g. downwardly so that it is evident to the user that the steam is not the normal output steam.
  • the outlet vent may be provided in a safe position, away from the hand of the user to prevent scolding, and with steam directed away from the user, but in a clearly visible location. Any suitable location may be chosen.
  • Figure 12 shows a cross section of the fully assembled design.
  • the enclosed compartment is shown as 120.
  • the axial compression is represented by arrows 122.
  • the gasket 80 sits on the top outer surface 124 of the heater block, and the first cover 40 sits in a recess in the same top outer surface, with the sealing paste on top of the outer rim of the first cover 40.
  • the water inlet nozzle 42 extends down to the steam chamber.
  • the second seal 82 provides sealing around water inlet nozzle 42 and hence around an opening of the first cover 40. It also serves to hold water inlet nozzle 42 in place.
  • the second seal On the top surface of the second seal is a circular lip which seals against the under surface of second cover 90 to prevent leakage from the enclosed compartment via the opening of the second cover 90 provided for the water inlet nozzle 42.
  • the second seal seals radially around the outside of the water inlet nozzle and radially around the inside of the opening in the first cover. It also provides a vertical seal to the underside of the second cover.
  • Figure 13 shows a cross section of an alternative design when fully assembled. This design implements radial compression of the gasket 80 as represented by arrows 130.
  • the gasket 80 again sits on the top outer surface of the heater block.
  • the gasket is forced into a constricted lateral space to provide lateral compression of the gasket.
  • the examples above are based on a rigid second cover, for example which is generally flat (other that at the rim where it connects to the steam generator).
  • the examples above also use a gasket formed as a separate independent component.
  • An alternative design provides the second cover and the gasket combined into a single cover part, for example formed of rubber such as silicone. Such a cover may then wrap tightly around the steam generator to form the fully sealed enclosed compartment.
  • Figure 14 shows a cross section for this alternative design.
  • the second cover 140 extends over the first cover 40 and around the sides of the steam generator by means of side straps 142.
  • Figure 15 shows an external view from above
  • Figure 16 shows an external view from below for the design of Figure 14 .
  • a steam iron has a soleplate which performs the same function as the heater block described above, and with a cover (the first cover) to define a chamber for steam generation.
  • the iron may also use a sealing paste to seal the chamber.
  • a second cover may then be provided in the manner explained above, to control the delivery of leaked steam to an outlet vent, for the same purposes as explained above.
  • the invention may also be applied to a garment steamer in which the steam generator is in the base unit.
  • the outlet vent then provides a steam flow which is indicative of a steam leak in the base unit.
  • the invention may be applied to a garment steamer in which all parts (reservoir, pump, steam generator) are within the hand-held housing.
