Definitions
- Examples relate to optimized waveguide shapes for additive manufacturing, and in particular to waveguides.
- Waveguides are usually round, rectangular or quasi-rectangular in shape. These shapes can be easily realized using conventional manufacturing processes. For additive manufacturing processes such as B. selective laser melting (English: Selective Laser Melting, abbreviation: SLM), these forms are difficult to realize. When producing ordinary shapes using additive manufacturing processes, major manufacturing deviations can arise, e.g. due to overhanging or shallow structures. These greatly reduce the quality of the manufactured waveguide.
- B. selective laser melting English: Selective Laser Melting, abbreviation: SLM
- JP 2004 - 048 486 A describes a waveguide consisting of two parts.
- One of the parts may consist of a plate, while the other part may have a trapezoidal cross-section.
- US 3,224,004 A describes a slot waveguide with a rectangular base cross section that has a rib-shaped recess.
- WO 2017 / 149 423 A1 describes the improvement of a chemical deposition process for producing waveguides.
- WO 2017/2035 698 A1 describes an asymmetrical waveguide manufactured with a 3D printer.
- Waveguides may need to be optimized to avoid manufacturing variations when using additive manufacturing processes. Nevertheless, it is desirable to form a good quality waveguide.
- the asymmetrical cross section means that overhangs can be avoided during production. Consequently, the quality of manufacturing is improved.
- the waveguide may only have a single cross-section.
- the internal angle of the waveguide can also be greater than 110° (or 120° or 130°).
- the inside angle of the waveguide can also be smaller than 160° (or 150° or 140°).
- the internal angle of the waveguide can be essentially 135°.
- the internal angle of the waveguide can have a value between 132.5° and 137.5°.
- a further (second) internal angle of the waveguide can have a value between 100° and 170°.
- the second interior angle of the waveguide may be greater than 110° (or 120° or 130°).
- the second interior angle of the waveguide may be less than 160° (or 150° or 140°).
- the second internal angle of the waveguide can be essentially 135°.
- the second internal angle of the waveguide can have a value between 132.5° and 137.5°.
- a smallest distance between the first and second portions can be smaller than (0.75 times, 1.0 times, 1.25 times or 1.5 times) a length of the first and/or second straight portion.
- a largest distance between the first and second portions may be greater than (0.5 times, 0.75 times, 1.0 times or 1.25 times) the length of the first and/or second straight portion.
- the first sub-area as the top sub-area can prove to be advantageous because This means that sinking can be avoided through the constructive measure of “arching outwards”.
- the sawtooth can be the shape of a roof.
- the two straight sections can form the roof, which is curved outwards from the center of the cross section.
- the measure of “inward curving” can reduce the electromagnetic disadvantages of the structural advantage of a roof or “outward curving”.
- the first portion can have a radial dimension.
- the radial dimension can be the bulge.
- the radial dimension can be understood as an extension in a direction away from the center of the cross section.
- the ridge can be an elevation in a middle of the second portion.
- the ridge can have a predetermined width.
- the ridge may be smaller than 1/4 (or 1/5 or 1/6 or 1/7 or 1/8) of a length of the second portion.
- the ridge may be larger than 1/12 (or 1/10 or 1/10 or 1/9 or 1/8) of a length of the second portion.
- a height of the ridge can also be adapted to a dimension of the first subarea.
- the ridge can be adapted to the radial dimension of the first subregion.
- the height of the ridge can essentially correspond to the radial dimension of the first subregion.
- the degree n of the polygon for the first sub-area can correspond to the degree n for the second sub-area.
- the second sub-area can essentially correspond to the first sub-area. This can mean that the dimensions of the first subarea essentially correspond to the dimensions of the second subarea.
- the distance between the first and second straight sections can be greater than 2.0 times (or 2.25 times or 2.5 times or 2.75 times or 3.0 times or 3.25 times or 3.5 times or 3.75 times or 4.0 times) the dimension of one of the first and second straight sections.
- the first and second straight sections can each be larger than 0.5 times (0.75 times or 1.0 times or 1.25 times or 1.5 times or 1.75 times or 2.0 times or 2.25 times or 2.5 times) a smallest distance between the first and second straight sections.
- the distance between the first and second straight sections may be less than 0.5 times (or 0.4 times or 0.3 times or 0.2 times) a length of one of the two first and second straight sections.
- the first section can consist of two straight sections. An interior angle of the two straight sections can be an acute angle.
- the second section can consist of two straight sections. An interior angle of the two straight sections of the second section can be an obtuse angle. A bulge in one area of the waveguide can result in an adjustment of the bandwidth due to a bulge in an opposite part of the waveguide.
- the second portion of the waveguide can rest on a powder bed.
- the first portion of the waveguide can be shaped in such a way that it does not sink/sag during production and thus no metallic remains/overhangs hang down. So that these overhangs do not occur, the first portion of the waveguide can have the shape of a roof or roof gable. Accordingly, the first portion of the waveguide can consist of two metallic surfaces that support each other, which means that sinking during production can be avoided.
- a 3D CAD body is provided.
- the 3D CAD body can be used to produce a hollow body aspect described above via an additive manufacturing process, for example SLM.
- the hollow body described above may have been produced using the additive manufacturing process.
- first or second etc. may be used to describe various components, these components are not to be limited to these terms. The above terms are merely intended to distinguish one component from the other. For example, a first component may be referred to as a second component without departing from the scope of the present disclosure; likewise, a second component can be referred to as a first component.
- the term “and/or” includes both combinations of the plurality of interrelated items as well as each item of this plurality of the plurality of items described.
- the waveguide will now be described using exemplary embodiments or (unclaimed) comparative examples.
- the waveguide disclosed herein can transmit a defined frequency band unhindered and at the same time be a structure/shape optimized for additive manufacturing.
- a bandwidth intended for the waveguide, in which only the fundamental mode can propagate, can be adjusted by optimizing the shape. Exemplary embodiments or comparative examples for this can be found in each of the Figures 1 to 6 .
- Common rectangular waveguides have a width to height ratio of 2:1. This ratio defines a maximum bandwidth for a monomodal application. By changing the width (broadside), a cutoff frequency of the waveguide can be changed.
- a roof-shaped structure (or a polynomial train or spline) on one of the broadsides can lead to better manufacturing quality.
- the monomodal bandwidth can decrease (the ratio of height to width is then no longer ideal, even no longer 1:2).
- the broad side opposite the roof can be adjusted.
- a width to height ratio of 2:1 may not be optimal in this case.
- a roof structure can also be used for the broad side opposite the roof.
- the two roofs can be as in the exemplary embodiment Figure 2 shown to be complementary. The dimensions of the two roofs in the exemplary embodiment Figure 2 do not necessarily have to be the same.
- a rectangular ridge can also be used, as in the exemplary embodiment Figure 1 shown can be used.
- a semicircle or circular section can also be used for the broad side opposite the roof.
- a polynomial/polygon/spline can also be used, as in the exemplary embodiment Figure 3 shown can be used.
- other structures that can be manufactured using additive manufacturing processes can be used for the broad side opposite the roof in order to increase the bandwidth.
- a roof-shaped structure or a polynomial train or spline
- the opposite narrow side can correspond to the exemplary embodiments of Figures 1 to 3 be adjusted.
- a roof-shaped structure (or a polynomial train or spline) can be used (see comparative example).
- Figure 6 the shape is no longer axially symmetrical to a transverse axis of the cross section of the waveguide.
- the shape is no longer axially symmetrical to a transverse axis of the cross section of the waveguide.
- the waveguide cross section is axially symmetrical.
- the influence on the cutoff frequency when replacing the straight narrow side of the waveguide with a roof-shaped structure (or a polynomial train or spline) can be significantly lower than when replacing the straight broad side of the waveguide.
- bandwidth-increasing structures such as a ridge on the broad side of the waveguide.
- Other possibilities for this include a semicircle, a section of a circle, a polynomial or any other structures that can be manufactured using additive manufacturing processes and are intended to increase the bandwidth.
- a roof-shaped structure instead of the straight narrow side of the waveguide can change the effective bandwidth of the waveguide and thus also the usable bandwidth. This effect can be remedied by compensation on the opposite narrow side.
- Possible structures are roofs, rectangular ridges, semicircles, circular sections, polynomials or any structure that can be produced using additive manufacturing processes and is designed to change the usable bandwidth.
- the exemplary embodiment of the Figure 1 shows a waveguide 100 with 9 internal angles.
- the waveguide 100 (or its dimensions) can be based on a rectangular waveguide.
- Figure 1 became one (above in Figure 1 ) of the two broad sides of the waveguide 100 was replaced by a roof.
- the other (below in Figure 1 ) of the two broad sides of the waveguide 100 was replaced by a ridge.
- the interior angles are defined in order as follows: 90°, 90°, 270°, 270°, 90°, 90°, 135°, 90° and 135°. Deviations of up to 2° or 3° can be provided.
- the exemplary embodiment of the Figure 2 shows a waveguide 200 with 6 internal angles.
- the waveguide 200 can be as in Figure 1 based on a rectangular waveguide.
- Figure 2 were both (top and bottom in Figure 2 ) Broad sides of the waveguide 200 each replaced by a roof.
- the roofs each point in the same direction, so they complement each other.
- the interior angles are defined in order as follows: 45°, 270°, 45°, 135°, 90° and 135°. Deviations of up to 2° or 3° can be provided.
- the exemplary embodiment of the Figure 3 shows a waveguide 300 with 10 internal angles.
- the waveguide 300 can be as in Figure 1 or 2 based on a rectangular waveguide.
- Both broad sides (top and bottom in Figure 3) of the waveguide 300 were each replaced by a polynomial-shaped structure.
- the polynomial-shaped structures each point in the same direction and are therefore complementary to one another.
- the complementarity allows a bandwidth to be adjusted according to a desired frequency behavior.
- the interior angles are defined in order as follows: 35°, 205°, 240°, 205°, 35°, 145°, 155°, 120°, 155° and 145°. Deviations of up to 2° or 3° can be provided.
- the comparative example of Figure 4 shows a waveguide 400 with 5 internal angles.
- the waveguide 400 can, for example, as in Figure 1 , 2 or 3 based on a rectangular waveguide.

- the exemplary embodiment of the Figure 5 shows a waveguide 500 with 6 internal angles.
- the waveguide 500 can, for example, as in Figure 1 , 2 , 3 or 4 based on a rectangular waveguide.
- the interior angles are defined in order as follows: 45°, 270°, 45°, 135°, 90° and 135°. Deviations of up to 2° or 3° can be provided.
- the comparative example of Figure 6 shows a waveguide 600 with 6 internal angles.
- the waveguide 600 can, for example, as in Figure 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 or 5 based on a rectangular waveguide.
- the comparative example Figure 6 became one (above in Figure 6 ) of the two narrow sides of the waveguide 600 replaced by a roof.
- an end (right in Figure 6 ) of the two broad sides of the waveguide 600 shifted outwards or in Figure 6 To the right.
- the roof on the narrow side is therefore wider than in the comparison example Figure 4 and in the exemplary embodiment of 5.
- the straight broad sides of the waveguide no longer run parallel to one another, but are twisted/skewed. Consequently, the extended narrow side is adjusted by lengthening/widening the broad side.
- the interior angles are defined in sequence as follows: 90°, 90°-100° (e.g. 95°), 125°-135° (e.g. 130°), 90° and 135°-145° (e.g. 140°). Deviations of up to 2° or 3° can be provided.
- the exemplary embodiments or comparative examples have in common is that no waveguide has point symmetry. Furthermore, the exemplary embodiments or comparative examples can have a commonality in which no circumference of the waveguide or no cross section of the circumference has a point symmetry. For example, the cross section or the circumference of the cross section cannot have point symmetry.
- reduced manufacturing variation can be achieved by avoiding overhangs and quasi-overhangs.
- a maximum possible manufacturing angle can be adjusted.
- a bandwidth may be adjusted to a scenario, for example suppressing higher frequencies.

Description
Examples relate to optimized waveguide shapes for additive manufacturing, and in particular to waveguides.
Waveguides are usually round, rectangular or quasi-rectangular in shape.
Waveguides may need to be optimized to avoid manufacturing variations when using additive manufacturing processes. Nevertheless, it is desirable to form a good quality waveguide.
There may be a need to provide concepts for waveguide structures with improved quality when manufactured via additive manufacturing processes.
This task is solved by the features of independent patent claim 1. Preferred exemplary embodiments are defined in the dependent claims.
The asymmetrical cross section means that overhangs can be avoided during production. Consequently, the quality of manufacturing is improved.
For example, the waveguide may only have a single cross-section.
The internal angle of the waveguide can also be greater than 110° (or 120° or 130°). The inside angle of the waveguide can also be smaller than 160° (or 150° or 140°). The internal angle of the waveguide can be essentially 135°. The internal angle of the waveguide can have a value between 132.5° and 137.5°. Furthermore, a further (second) internal angle of the waveguide can have a value between 100° and 170°. The second interior angle of the waveguide may be greater than 110° (or 120° or 130°). The second interior angle of the waveguide may be less than 160° (or 150° or 140°). The second internal angle of the waveguide can be essentially 135°. The second internal angle of the waveguide can have a value between 132.5° and 137.5°.
Selecting an internal angle with a value greater than 90° enables the waveguide to be manufactured in a stable and protruding manner. The disadvantage of a reduction in bandwidth can be accepted here.
A smallest distance between the first and second portions can be smaller than (0.75 times, 1.0 times, 1.25 times or 1.5 times) a length of the first and/or second straight portion. A largest distance between the first and second portions may be greater than (0.5 times, 0.75 times, 1.0 times or 1.25 times) the length of the first and/or second straight portion.
When manufacturing with an additive manufacturing process, the first sub-area as the top sub-area can prove to be advantageous because This means that sinking can be avoided through the constructive measure of “arching outwards”.
The sawtooth can be the shape of a roof. The two straight sections can form the roof, which is curved outwards from the center of the cross section.
For example, the degree n of the polyline can be =3 (or n=4, or n=5, or n=6, or n=7, or n=8, or n=9, or n=10).
The measure of “inward curving” can reduce the electromagnetic disadvantages of the structural advantage of a roof or “outward curving”.
For example, the first portion can have a radial dimension. The radial dimension can be the bulge. Furthermore, the radial dimension can be understood as an extension in a direction away from the center of the cross section.
The ridge can be an elevation in a middle of the second portion. The ridge can have a predetermined width. For example, the ridge may be smaller than 1/4 (or 1/5 or 1/6 or 1/7 or 1/8) of a length of the second portion. For example, the ridge may be larger than 1/12 (or 1/10 or 1/10 or 1/9 or 1/8) of a length of the second portion.
A height of the ridge can also be adapted to a dimension of the first subarea. For example, the ridge can be adapted to the radial dimension of the first subregion. For example, the height of the ridge can essentially correspond to the radial dimension of the first subregion.
The degree n of the polygon for the first sub-area can correspond to the degree n for the second sub-area. Furthermore, the second sub-area can essentially correspond to the first sub-area. This can mean that the dimensions of the first subarea essentially correspond to the dimensions of the second subarea.
The distance between the first and second straight sections can be greater than 2.0 times (or 2.25 times or 2.5 times or 2.75 times or 3.0 times or 3.25 times or 3.5 times or 3.75 times or 4.0 times) the dimension of one of the first and second straight sections.
The first and second straight sections can each be larger than 0.5 times (0.75 times or 1.0 times or 1.25 times or 1.5 times or 1.75 times or 2.0 times or 2.25 times or 2.5 times) a smallest distance between the first and second straight sections. The distance between the first and second straight sections may be less than 0.5 times (or 0.4 times or 0.3 times or 0.2 times) a length of one of the two first and second straight sections.
The first section can consist of two straight sections. An interior angle of the two straight sections can be an acute angle. The second section can consist of two straight sections. An interior angle of the two straight sections of the second section can be an obtuse angle. A bulge in one area of the waveguide can result in an adjustment of the bandwidth due to a bulge in an opposite part of the waveguide.
When producing the waveguide using an additive manufacturing process, the second portion of the waveguide can rest on a powder bed. The first portion of the waveguide can be shaped in such a way that it does not sink/sag during production and thus no metallic remains/overhangs hang down. So that these overhangs do not occur, the first portion of the waveguide can have the shape of a roof or roof gable. Accordingly, the first portion of the waveguide can consist of two metallic surfaces that support each other, which means that sinking during production can be avoided.
The process variants described here, as well as their functional and operational aspects, only serve to provide a better understanding of their structure, functionality and properties; they do not limit the disclosure to the exemplary embodiments. The figures are partly schematic, with essential properties and effects being shown in some cases significantly enlarged or reduced in size in order to clarify the functions, operating principles, technical designs and features. Every function, every principle, every technical design and every feature that is/are disclosed in the figures or in the text, with all claims, every feature in the text and in the other figures, other functions, principles, technical designs and features contained in or resulting from this disclosure can be combined freely and arbitrarily, so that all conceivable combinations correspond to those described Devices are to be assigned. Combinations between all individual versions in the text, that is, in each section of the description, in the claims and also combinations between different variants in the text, in the claims and in the figures are also included and can be made the subject of further claims. The claims also do not limit the disclosure and thus the possible combinations of all the features shown with one another. The waveguide will now be described using exemplary embodiments or (unclaimed) comparative examples.
Specific details are set forth below, but are not limited to, to provide a complete understanding of the present disclosure. However, it will be apparent to one skilled in the art that the present disclosure may be used in other embodiments that may vary from the details set forth below.
Accordingly, while further examples are suitable for various modifications and alternative forms, some examples of the same are shown by way of example in the figures and described in detail here. It should be understood, however, that examples are not intended to be limited to the particular forms disclosed. Additional examples may cover all modifications, equivalents, and alternatives falling within the scope of the disclosure. Throughout the description of the figures, like reference numerals refer to like or similar elements, which may be implemented identically or in modified form compared to each other while providing the same or similar functionality.
It is to be understood that when an element is referred to as "connected" or "coupled" to another element, the elements may be connected or coupled directly or via one or more intermediate elements. When two elements A and B are joined with an "or", this should be understood to reveal all possible combinations, i.e. only A, only B, and A and B. An alternative wording for the same combinations is "at least one of A and B". The same applies to combinations of more than 2 elements.
The terminology used herein is intended to describe specific examples and is not intended to be limiting to other examples. Whenever a singular form such as "a, an" and "the, the", and the use of only one element is neither explicitly nor implicitly defined as mandatory, further examples may also include the plural forms to implement the same functionality. Similarly, if functionality is described below as being implemented using multiple elements, further examples may implement the same functionality using a single element or processing entity. It is further understood that the terms "comprises", "comprising", "comprising", "contains", "containing" and/or "having" as used herein indicate the presence of specified features, integers, elements and/or components, but does not exclude the presence or addition of one or more other features, integers, elements, components and/or groups thereof.
Unless otherwise defined, all terms used herein (including technical and scientific terms) are used in their usual meaning of the field to which the examples belong.
Details and aspects are mentioned in connection with the exemplary embodiments or comparative examples described above or below.
Common rectangular waveguides have a width to height ratio of 2:1. This ratio defines a maximum bandwidth for a monomodal application. By changing the width (broadside), a cutoff frequency of the waveguide can be changed.
With more complex waveguide systems, it cannot always be guaranteed that there are no overhanging or flat surfaces (in relation to the direction of production) in the rectangular waveguide. This means that individual areas in the rectangular waveguide cannot be manufactured or can only be manufactured with major losses in quality.

What the exemplary embodiments or comparative examples have in common is that no waveguide has point symmetry. Furthermore, the exemplary embodiments or comparative examples can have a commonality in which no circumference of the waveguide or no cross section of the circumference has a point symmetry. For example, the cross section or the circumference of the cross section cannot have point symmetry.
In one aspect, reduced manufacturing variation can be achieved by avoiding overhangs and quasi-overhangs.
According to one aspect, a maximum possible manufacturing angle can be adjusted.
In one aspect, a bandwidth may be adjusted to a scenario, for example suppressing higher frequencies.
The aspects and features mentioned and described together with one or more of the examples and figures described in detail above may be further combined with one or more of the other examples to replace a similar feature of the other example or to additionally incorporate the feature to bring in the other example.
The description and drawings represent only the principles of the disclosure.
