Abstract
Description
Claims (13)
- A dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77), comprising:a distal end (2) for positioning at a region proximal a target therapeutic region of tissue;an output port (3) at the distal end (2);
an energy source (8, 19, 402) configured to generate optical energy (4) to be output from the output port (3) to the target therapeutic region of tissue; anda control device configured to control delivery of the optical energy (4) at an initial power density of up to 400 W/cm2 during a first optical laser treatment time period required to increase the temperature of the target therapeutic region of tissue by at least 2°C and no more than 8°C for heating the target therapeutic region of tissue that is less than an injurying temperature so as to induce an expression of heat shock proteins at the target therapeutic region of tissue, followed by a delivery of the optical energy having a second optical laser treatment time period during which the optical energy is reduced to have an average power density less than the initial power density which maintains the temperature of the target therapeutic region at the temperature of the target therapeutic region of tissue increased by at least 2°C and no more than 8°C, wherein a total laser treatment time that includes the combined first and second optical laser treatment time periods is less than 10 seconds. - The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to claim 1, further comprising a housing (11) that encapsulates the energy source (8, 19, 402) and the control device, wherein,a) the housing (11) has an approximately cylindrical shape that extends in a direction of extension, orb) the housing (11) is constructed and arranged so that the distal end (2) is perpendicular to a main body of the housing (11), and wherein the optical energy (4) is output in a direction that is perpendicular to the main body of the housing (11).
- The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to at least one of the preceding claims,a) further comprising at least one safety sensor (102) configured to determine whether a temperature of at the therapeutic region of tissue is within a predetermined acceptable range, and to permit the control device to provide a laser emission and delivery of electrical current to the energy source (8, 19, 402), orb) further comprising a contact sensor (5, 25) that includes a safety interlock for registering contact with the tissue.
- The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to the preceding claim,
further comprising an optical spatial distribution system (7, 18, 401, 406, 413, 414, 417, 422) configured to modify a spatial distribution (404, 407) of the optical energy (4) to a desired distribution at the distal end (2). - The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to at least one of the preceding claims, further including a skin (419) stretching mechanism to temporarily remove or reduce wrinkles or tissue folds.
- The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to at least one of the preceding claims, wherein the device delivers an extended thermal exposure period by providing a thermal boost at the end of the treatment pulse (34).
- The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to at least one of the preceding claims, wherein
a temperature temporal profile of the target therapeutic tissue is controlled by modulating a temporal profile of the energy source (8, 19, 402). - The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to at least one of the preceding claims, wherein the control device includes a microprocessor having embedded software configured to control the optical energy (4) at the target therapeutic region of tissue to have a treatment pulse width during which a temperature of the target therapeutic region of tissue is increased at the amount of energy to a temperature that is less than a pain threshold temperature wherein, for inducing an expression of heat shock proteins at the target therapeutic region of tissue, the microprocessor is configured to control the optical energy (4) output from the output port (3) to the target therapeutic region of tissue at the amount of energy for producing a temperature increase of the target therapeutic region of tissue between 2°C and 8°C to a peak temperature that is less than the pain threshold temperature, the microprocessor further being configured to control the optical power output from the output port (3) to the target therapeutic region so as to reduce one or more first power levels related to the amount of energy to one or more second power levels within the treatment pulse width to maintain the temperature of the region of tissue at or below the peak temperature and within a therapeutic temperature range that is less than the pain threshold temperature.
- The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to claim at least one of the preceding claims,a) further comprising a replenishment cartridge (57, 69, 71, 76) that outputs the replenishment data to the microprocessor, in particular wherein
aa) the replenishment cartridge is positioned in the dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77). - The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to claim 9,
further comprising a disposable treatment tip (80) coupled to the distal end (2) of the device, wherein the tip includes the replenishment cartridge. - The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according claim 9, wherein
the replenishment cartridge includes a consumable part (59) and a microprocessor, and/ora) the replenishment data is provided by a key code replenishment mechanism, in particular, wherein
aa) the key code replenishment mechanism includes a bar code, and/orb) the key code replenishment mechanism includes a radio frequency identification (RFID), and/orc) the replenishment data is provided by a replenishment server in communication with the dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77), and/ord) key code replenishment is provided to the customer to be entered manually through a local computer (64) configured to communicate with the dermatological medical device that is handheld. - The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to least one of the preceding claims, wherein the first optical laser treatment time period is between 20 ms and 2 less than seconds.
- The dermatological medical device (1, 15, 20, 53, 56, 65, 67, 68, 72, 77) according to least one of the preceding claims, wherein a temperature increase during the first optical laser treatment time period is at least two degrees C and less than 2 seconds.
