Description

The invention relates to a method for applying an optically variable security element to an upper side of a substrate of a value document, wherein the upper side of the substrate consists of paper. The optically variable security element consists of a color with optically variable pigments, which is printed on a first area of the upper side of the paper substrate.

To protect against imitation or counterfeiting, especially with color copiers or other reproduction methods, value documents, such as banknotes or cards, are equipped with optically variable security elements. The protection against counterfeiting is based on the fact that the visually and simply and clearly recognizable optically variable effect can not or only insufficiently be reproduced by the abovementioned reproduction devices.

Such optically variable security elements are, for example, effect colors in which a color is mixed with pigments in the form of thin-film elements, wherein the thin-film elements consist of a reflector layer, a dielectric and an absorber layer. If the security element is viewed from the absorber side, the viewer perceives a certain color, which changes as the viewing angle changes. Such pigment-like thin-film elements which are admixed with an ink are, for example, made EP 0 227 423 B1 known. Printing inks with magnetically orientable optically variable interference pigments are for example made EP 1880 866 A1 known.

The print quality of effect colors, especially the magnetically orientable colors, in screen printing depends to a great extent on the surface quality of the substrate used. A smooth substrate surface leads to a much more homogeneous and marginal sharpening pressure and improves the optical effect. For example, a smoother surface of a paper substrate can be formed by calendering or satinization, but also by printing a primer under the effect color area. During the calendering or satinization of a paper, the paper web is guided during papermaking in a so-called calender, which can be designed as a roll calender or as a stamping calender. In the sheet calender, the paper web is passed between superimposed rolls mechanically under pressure, friction and heat, so that the paper receives its final surface texture, in particular its gloss and its smoothness. In the embossing calender, the paper web is acted upon by means of a stamping die with mechanical pressure and optionally additionally embossed.

Calendering takes place automatically in intaglio printing, but the printing sequence is already defined, namely first gravure printing and then screen printing. If, however, gravure printing is applied by means of screen printing over or after screen printing, this variant of calendering can not be selected by intaglio printing. In this case, a primer is usually applied by screen printing in the first printing step, which leads to a smooth surface on the paper and which is then overprinted with the effect color. However, this is only possible with machines of the type Notascreen from KBA-NotaSys with intermediate dryer. For machines without intermediate dryers, two separate passes through the press are required, which are time consuming and costly.

The documents WO 2009/147204 A2 and DE 689 17 144 T3 disclose a method according to the preamble of claim 1.

The invention is therefore the object of developing a generic security element such that the disadvantages of the prior art are eliminated and the protection against counterfeiting is further increased.

This object is solved by the features of independent claim 1. Further developments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.

According to the invention, prior to the printing of the ink with optically variable pigments, a smoothing of a second region of the upper side of the substrate made of paper, wherein the second region with the smoothing and the first region with the color with optically variable pigments at least partially overlap. Thus, the color with optically variable pigments has a different appearance for a viewer in the area of the overlap than outside the overlap. For example, the color for a viewer in the area of the overlap shows a glossy surface and, outside the overlap, a matt surface. There is thus a partial smoothing of the substrate at least in the areas which are intended for a later screen printing. As a result, it is particularly advantageous to achieve at least partial surface smoothing of the substrate prior to the subsequent screen printing process.

The different appearance of the color to a viewer in the area of the overlap and outside of the overlap results from the fact that the optically variable pigments have a different orientation or are oriented differently on a smooth surface than on a rough surface.

For the purposes of this invention, optically variable pigments are all pigments whose visual appearance changes with tilting. For example, changes in tilting their color, moves apparently a bar from one side of the pigment or the color to another side, are shown in tilting the pigment or the color different characters or results in a so-called pumping effect in the form of an enlarging or downsizing outline of a picture motif. Such pigments may be, for example, the above-mentioned thin-film elements or magnetically orientable, optically variable interference pigments. However, it may also be metallic or metallic acting pigments, for example, show a silver color and their gloss or reflectivity changes when tilted.

According to a preferred embodiment, it is provided that the color is printed with optically variable pigments in the screen printing process on the first region of the top of the paper substrate. In principle, any printing method which is suitable for printing a color with optically variable pigments is suitable for carrying out the method according to the invention; in the screen printing method, however, the optically variable pigments are printed particularly gently, i. without or least possible mechanical damage. Particularly advantageous results from the inventive method, a higher print quality of the screen printing, especially when the screen printing is done before the intaglio.

Furthermore, it is particularly advantageous to have greater flexibility in the choice of the printing sequence or the saving of a printing cycle in the case of double-use of the screen printing machines.

According to a preferred embodiment it is provided that the smoothing takes place either during the production of the substrate in a paper machine or after the production of the substrate during a refinement of the surface of the paper.

According to a preferred embodiment, it is provided that the smoothing takes place via a polishing roller, a calender roller, a milling or a punch. A polishing roller here polishes the surface of the substrate, so that the surface is smoothed in this area. Alternatively, a calender roll as well as a die compresses and smoothes the surface of the substrate, with a calender roll having the advantage over a die that it is more universally applicable, can be used independently of design, and can be easily placed in register with the substrate. Alternatively, a smoothing by means of a milling of the surface of the substrate is possible, wherein the surface of the substrate, for example, removed mechanically with a milling head or with a laser and thereby the thickness of the substrate is reduced.

Similar to a polishing roller, a so-called patrix can be clamped on a stable cylinder. The patrix has raised areas according to the pattern to be worked out by the smoothing. The paper web is guided over the cylinder with male part. The rotating tool is placed precisely on the side of the paper web opposite the male part to the paper web running over the patrice cylinder. If the tool touches only the paper surface, the surface is smoothed by the so-called rolling or polishing by friction without material removal. If the feed device is equipped with a suitable tool and if the feed device is guided further into the paper substrate, material is removed by milling. Because of the engagement suitable patrices can be produced in this way particularly preferably patterned smooth and glossy areas.

The smoothed and / or milled surface can be designed as a design element. Here, in particular, the outline of the smoothed and / or milled surface information. The design element preferably has a width of 1.5 cm to 5 cm.

On the finished end product, for example a banknote, in particular after intaglio printing, a smoothing according to the invention is usually no longer visible since it is covered by the subsequent printing steps. Furthermore, no impairment of the hue of the color applied to the smoothed area according to the invention is to be expected.

According to a further preferred embodiment, it is provided that the smoothing of the substrate in the areas which are provided for a subsequent screen printing, is carried out over the entire surface, for example with a width of 1.5 cm to 5 cm. This results in a particularly advantageous increased color adhesion and improved flatness of the substrate.

The substrate is particularly preferably made of paper made of cotton fibers, as used for example for banknotes, or of other natural fibers or of synthetic fibers or of a mixture of natural and synthetic fibers, or of at least one plastic film. Further preferably, the substrate consists of a combination of at least two superimposed and interconnected different substrates, a so-called hybrid. In this case, the substrate consists for example of a combination of plastic film-paper-plastic film, ie a paper substrate is on each of its two sides covered by a plastic film, or a combination of paper-plastic film paper, ie a substrate made of a plastic film is covered on each side by paper.

Information on the weight of the substrate used are, for example, in the Scriptures DE 10243653 A9 specified. The font DE 102 43 653 A9 in particular states that the paper layer usually has a weight of 50 g / m 2 to 100 g / m 2 , preferably from 80 g / m 2 to 90 g / m 2 . Of course, depending on the application, any other suitable weight can be used.

Documents of value in which such a substrate or security paper can be used are, in particular, banknotes, stocks, bonds, certificates, vouchers, checks, high-quality admission tickets, but also other papers which are subject to counterfeiting, such as passports and other identity documents, as well as cards, such as credit cards. or debit cards whose card body has at least one layer of security paper, and also product securing elements such as labels, seals, packages and the like.

The simplified term value document includes all the above materials, documents and product safeguards.

The term top surface of the substrate or value document is a relative term that refers to both the front side or rear side as well as "the one" and "the opposite" side, which constitute the overwhelming portion of the overall surface of the substrate or document of value. Specifically not included with this term are the side surfaces of a substrate or value document, which are negligible in a thickness of a substrate or document of value, which is only fractions of a millimeter in the case of card bodies or only fractions of a millimeter in banknotes, and which usually can not be provided with security elements or coatings.

Information in the sense of this invention is a pattern-shaped and visually perceptible coating. This can for example form a graphic image, a picture, a number, a letter, a text or other characters. Particularly preferably, the information consists of positive or / and negative motives. In the case of a positive motif, in this case a motif element is itself applied to the substrate, whereas in the case of a negative motif the area surrounding the motif element is applied to the substrate. For example, a positive subject is a letter printed in dark color on the light substrate. A negative motif is, for example, a surface applied in a dark color to the substrate, which has an unprinted area in the form of a letter within the area.
