Definitions
- the invention relates to a folding lock, to protect, for example, vehicles, in particular bicycles, from wrongful use, the folding lock comprising a series of arms coupled to each other pivotably about parallel pivotal axes, wherein two end arms of the series are provided with proximal coupling parts which are detachably couplable to each other by a bolting mechanism, wherein the coupling parts are pivotable relative to each other, about a pivotal axis parallel to the pivotal axes mentioned, in a coupled-up position.
- a known folding lock comprises a series of arms coupled to each other pivotably about parallel pivotal axes.
- the series of arms after unbolting, is unfoldable by operation via the arms.
- Folding locks are known from the state of the art, as is apparent from, for instance, DE 10215532A1 , US 5913906A , DE 102005063514 B4 , or EP 0689987 , US 881559 , US 5732577 . In folded condition, these are relatively thick locks.
- the known locks consist of relatively many parts, are complex, so that it takes relatively long for the folding lock to be folded in and out correctly. What plays a role here is that the arms of such locks prove relatively hard to handle, during folding out as well as folding in. Further, they are relatively unwieldy, bulky and heavy items and therefore unfavorable with a view to efficient transport and storage, both for end users and for suppliers.
- the present invention contemplates eliminating or reducing the drawbacks mentioned.
- the invention contemplates realizing a folding lock that is relatively compact so that it can for instance be transported much easier than known folding locks.
- the invention further contemplates a folding lock that is particularly user friendly, for instance a lock that is well maneuverable and can be relatively easily - hence rapidly - folded in and out.
- the invention further envisages an esthetically attractive lock.
- a folding lock according to the present invention is characterized by the features of claim 1.
- the lock is characterized in that each end arm is provided with a cover part, the cover parts receiving the series of arms in a folded-in lock condition.
- each cover part can form a good protection for the arms of the lock from, for example, rain, dirt or damage when the lock is not in use.
- each cover part is made from a form-retaining material, for example hard plastic.
- the folding lock comprises a series of arms coupled to each other pivotably about parallel pivotal axes, wherein two end arms of the series are provided with proximal coupling parts which are detachably couplable to each other by a bolting mechanism, wherein the coupling parts are pivotable relative to each other, about a pivotal axis parallel to the pivotal axes mentioned, in a coupled-up position, wherein the series of arms is unfoldable by operation via the end arms, wherein the end arms are at the same level, viewed in axial direction of the pivotal axes, or in an axial level different by at most two arm thicknesses.
- a particularly user friendly folding lock is obtained, with which, for example, bicycles can be efficiently secured to the surroundings (such as a pole or rack). Furthermore, in this manner, a folding lock relatively thin in folded condition is achieved, that can be of relatively compact and lightweight implementation. Further, it appears that the lock according to the invention can be folded in and out relatively rapidly and simply.
- the second aspect mentioned can be combined with the above-mentioned first aspect of the invention but this is not necessary.
- US5913906 shows a lock from the state of the art, however, this lock is not provided with a configuration whereby the coupling parts mentioned, in a coupled-up position, are pivotable relative to each other about a pivotal axis parallel to the pivotal axes mentioned.
- the series of arms are arranged at at most three, preferably only two, axial levels.
- This feature makes for a very compactly formed folding lock.
- a thickness of an arm is 12 mm or less, the thickness being measured in axial direction, for instance a thickness in the range of 6-9 mm.
- each arm, apart from the two end arms may preferably be coupled along the same side to two adjacent arms.
- an arm is fastened along a bottom side (i.e. a first longitudinal side), viewed in axial direction, to two adjacent arms, or an arm is fastened along a top side (i.e. a second longitudinal side remote from the first longitudinal side), viewed in axial direction, to two adjacent arms.
- a bottom side i.e. a first longitudinal side
- a top side i.e. a second longitudinal side remote from the first longitudinal side
- a manner of folding up that is advantageous for this folding lock can be achieved: in folded condition of the folding lock, a first arm is parallel to a second arm, the first and the second arm having a common adjacent arm, and each forming a V with the common adjacent arm in the folded condition.
- a compact folding lock is achieved not only in thickness, viewed in axial direction, as described hereinabove, but also in width of the folding lock.
- the folding lock comprises an even number of arms, for example four or six.
- the series of arms includes at most six arms.
- the pivotal axes mentioned are preferably perpendicular to longitudinal directions of the arms, which also contributes to the compactness of the folding lock.
- the folding lock comprises two long arms, for instance the end arms mentioned, and at least two short arms which are shorter than the long arms.
- the longer end arms are, in particular, coupled to the bolting mechanism mentioned.
- the proximal coupling parts of the end arms may be implemented in different manners and, for instance, each comprise an annular element.
- a center of such annular element is, in particular, eccentric relative to a central axis of a respective end arm.
- the proximal coupling parts can each be fixed to a respective lock part of the bolting mechanism.
- the lock parts comprise disc-shaped lock parts, while the annular elements enclose the disc-shaped lock parts.
- This construction is aimed towards providing a bolting mechanism that fits the arms of the folding lock as closely as possible to maintain the compactness.
- the annular elements and the disc-shaped lock parts in turn provide for smooth use, whereby the arms can preferably pivot about the bolting mechanism.
- the annular elements can be fixed to the respective disc-shaped lock parts, whereby these disc-shaped lock parts are preferably rotatable relative to each other in a position coupled via the bolting mechanism.
- these disc-shaped lock parts are preferably rotatable relative to each other in a position coupled via the bolting mechanism.
- a durable and powerful lock can be obtained, which is user friendly and well protected against undesired manipulation.
- at least one (for instance each) of the annular elements may in itself be pivotably coupled to the associated annular lock part.
- a coupling between two of the arms that is located centrally opposite the bolting mechanism is designed such that an included angle between these arms is limited to a range of 0 to 180 degrees.
- At least one of the cover parts mentioned, and preferably each cover part moves along with one of the arms of the folding lock.
- the cover part can be fixed to the associated end arm.
- the cover parts do not need to be stored or carried along separately, and are available at all times for putting away the folding lock.
- the cover parts enclose an end arm along three sides both in folded and unfolded condition of the folding lock.
- the cover parts each have a U-shaped cross section.
- the cover parts are preferably provided with mutually facing open longitudinal sides, to allow pivotable arms of the folding lock to pass, while the cover parts touch each other by mutually facing longitudinal edges in a folded condition.
- operating the folding lock is simple and, according to an aspect of the invention, only requires a minimum of operations.
- a folding lock according to the preamble wherein each end arm is provided with a cover part, while the series of arms is unfoldable by operation via the cover parts of the end arms, in particular by pivoting the cover parts apart for folding out the lock, and by pivoting the cover parts towards each other for folding up the lock.
- This third aspect can for instance be combined with the first aspect and offers an extra simple, reliable and user friendly operation of the lock.
- the cover parts together with a bolted lock housing of the bolting mechanism can take up a V-shape, in a folded-out condition of the lock.
- Figures 1-7 , 11 show a first exemplary embodiment of different aspects of the invention.
- FIG. 1 shows in particular a top plan view of an exemplary embodiment of the folding lock according to various aspects of the present invention in folded-up condition.
- the lock comprises a series of mutually coupled arms 1 pivotable about parallel pivotal axes, while two end arms 2 of the series are provided with proximal coupling parts 3 which are detachably couplable to each other by a bolting mechanism 4. These coupling parts 3 are pivotable, about a pivotal axis parallel to the pivotal axes mentioned, in a coupled-up condition.
- the series of arms 1 is unfoldable by operation via the end arms 2, which operation can preferably be done via optional cover parts which are connected to those end arms 2 (see hereinbelow).
- a first arm for instance end arm 2a in Figure 1
- a second arm for instance arm 1 in Figure 1
- the first 2a and the second arm 1 have a common adjacent arm 1 (not visible in Figure 1 )
- the first-mentioned first arm 2a and second arm 1 each form a V with the common adjacent arm 1 in the folded-up condition mentioned.
- an end arm 2b is parallel to an arm 1 at a rear side of the folding lock (not visible in Fig. 1 ), and this arm 1 forms the common adjacent arm, with which arm 2b forms a V in folded-up condition.
- the end arms 2, viewed in axial direction 7 of the pivotal axes mentioned, are preferably in an axial level different by at most two arm thicknesses, preferably, as in this example, in an axial level different by one arm thickness.
- a thickness W of an arm 1 or 2, measured in axial direction 7, is preferably 12 mm or less, for instance a thickness in the range of 6-9 mm.
- the series of arms 1 and 2 are preferably arranged at at most three, preferably at only two axial levels. In this manner, a slender lock can be obtained.
- the pivotal axes are preferably perpendicular to longitudinal directions of the arms 1 and 2.
- the arms 1, 2 can each consist of relatively flat, elongated bars, having for instance substantially rectangular cross sections (as in this example), or be designed differently.
- Figure 3 shows a perspective view of the part shown in Figure 1 , in this case in disassembled condition.
- the folding lock according to this elaboration comprises two long arms, for instance the end arms 2 mentioned, and at least two short arms (in this example two) which are shorter than the long arms.
- the proximal coupling parts 3 of the end arms 2 each comprise an (in this case) annular coupling element 11, while a center of an annular element 11 is in particular eccentric relative to a central axis of a respective end arm 2.
- the coupling elements 11 are manufactured in one piece with the arms 2.
- the coupling elements 11 of the example each enclose a respective circular inner space (to receive a lock part 6a, 6b of circular contour with a close fit).
- the proximal coupling parts 3 are each fixed to a respective lock part 6 of the bolting mechanism 4.
- the lock parts 6 comprise disc-shaped lock parts, while the annular elements 11 enclose the disc-shaped lock parts 6. This provides a strong and robust, compact configuration.
- FIG 4 shows a perspective front view of the exemplary embodiment of Figure 1 , with extra advantageous cover parts, in folded condition.
- each end arm 2 is provided with a cover part 5, the cover parts receiving the series of arms in a folded-in lock condition.
- a cover formed by the cover parts 5 is manufactured from a form retaining material, for instance from hard plastic.
- the cover parts 5 can move along with one of the arms of the folding lock.
- both cover parts 5 move along with one of the end arms 2 in each case.
- the cover can also consist of asymmetrical cover parts. Use of the cover parts offers various advantages, which has already been described hereinabove.
- Figures 5 and 6 both being perspective views of the exemplary embodiment of Figure 4 , in a first ( Fig. 5 ) and a second ( Fig. 6 ) folded-out position, show that the cover parts 5 together with a lock housing 6 of the bolting mechanism 4 take up a V-shape in a folded-out, but bolted, condition of the folding lock.
- the cover parts 5 enclose an end arm 2 along three sides, both in folded-up and unfolded condition of the folding lock.
- Fig. 6b a cross section along the line Y-Y of Figure 6a
- the cover parts 5 comprise mutually facing open longitudinal sides 8, to allow the pivotable arms 1 of the folding lock to pass.
- the cover parts 5 of this elaboration each have a U-shaped cross section.
- the cover parts in a folded-up condition, contact each other by mutually facing longitudinal edges 9. It will be clear to the skilled person that other cover shapes are also possible.
- Figure 7 shows a perspective view of an exemplary embodiment as in Figure 6 , in unbolted condition.
- the proximal coupling parts 3 of the end arms 2 of the example shown here each comprise an annular element 11, while in particular, a center of this annular element 11 is eccentric relative to a central axis of a respective end arm 2.
- the proximal coupling parts 3 are preferably each secured to a respective lock part 6 of the bolting mechanism 4.
- the lock parts 6 comprise disc-shaped lock parts 6a, 6b, with the annular elements 11 enclosing the disc-shaped lock parts 6a, 6b.
- FIG 8 shows a perspective view of a second exemplary embodiment of the present invention.
- the lock of this example comprises an even number of arms 1, 2, the series of arms here including six arms.
- each arm 1, apart from the two end arms, is attached along the same longitudinal side to two adjacent arms.
- Figure 9 shows a cutaway perspective of the second exemplary embodiment shown in Figure 8 in folded-in position, without bolting mechanism 4 or cover parts 5, while Figure 10 shows a detail of the example in extended condition.
- the folding lock comprises six arms 1, as in Figures 8 and 9
- a coupling between two of the arms 1 that is located centrally opposite the bolting mechanism 4 is preferably designed such that an included angle between the arms 1 is limited to a range of 0 to 180 degrees.
- Figure 10 shows an example of how this can be achieved, namely, for instance, by providing an additional element 10 that limits the pivotal movements of the two adjacent arms 1 to an angular range as mentioned.
- FIG 11 shows a further elaboration of the lock housing of the lock in more detail.
- the lock housing is of compact and strong design and is arranged to house the bolting mechanism 4, and to this end has the two disc-shaped lock parts 6, namely, a first housing part 6a with a lock cylinder 30 and an - in bolted condition - opposite, second disc-shaped housing part 6b.
- the housing parts 6a, 6b are preferably made of robust material, for example, hardened steel, and are preferably provided with relatively smooth mutually facing surfaces.
- a key 31 for operating the cylinder 30 - known per se - is also represented.
- the cylinder 30 is disposed centrally in the first housing part 6a via a cylinder cavity located in this housing part 6a.
- the two housing parts 6a, 6b are rotatable relative to each other about a central axis 40 which, in particular, is parallel to the pivotal axes of the folding lock pivoting arms 1, 2.
- the parts/surfaces of the two housing parts 6a 6b facing and touching each other can serve as rotation guide, and for instance be of smooth design and/or be provided with a friction reducing coating.
- Fig. 11 furthermore, are coupling elements 11 of the end arms, which may for instance be non-rotatably fixed to the respective housing parts 6a, 6b.
- This fixation can comprise fixation by clamping, form-locked coupling and/or force-locked coupling, an adhesive agent and/or a welded joint, fixation by integral manufacture, or a different manner of fixation.
- the coupling elements 11 of the end arms may, for instance, each in itself be rotatably coupled to the housing parts 6a, 6b.
- the two lock housing parts 6a, 6b can adjoin each other relatively closely via a rotation-symmetrical relief, such as annular circumferential cams 27a and opposite, mating circumferential grooves or recesses 27a. In this manner, sideways displacement (normal to the central axis 40) of the housing parts 6a, 6b relative to each other can be prevented.
- a rotation-symmetrical relief such as annular circumferential cams 27a and opposite, mating circumferential grooves or recesses 27a.
- the second housing part 6b encloses an inner space 34 (in this case a substantially circular cylinder-shaped inner space) for receiving an end part of the cylinder 31 and associated catch/bolt 32.
- an inner space 34 in this case a substantially circular cylinder-shaped inner space
- the catch 32 to be operated by the lock cylinder 30 can engage or hook from the first housing part 6a behind an (in this example annular) inner wall 33 of the second housing part 6b. In this manner, a strong bolting can be obtained.
- the catch 32 With a mutually rotatable configuration of the housing parts 6a, 6b, the catch 32 can slide along the inner wall 33, so that the rotation is not prevented by the catch.
- the catch 32 can be brought from the blocking position shown to a release position (for instance be slid radially inwards), so that the catch 32 no longer hooks behind the inner wall 33.
- the housing parts 6a, 6b can be moved apart in axial direction.
- the lock mechanism can for instance comprise a spring, not represented, to counteract with spring force the displacement of the catch 32 from the bolting position to the release position.
- Bolting the lock can be carried out by performing the above steps in reversed order.
- the catch 32 can then slide radially inwards automatically under the influence of a bevel slide-off surface 32a, then to snap automatically behind the inner wall 33 of the second housing part to the position shown in Fig. 11 , for instance under the influence of the spring force.
- surfaces of the disc-shaped housing parts 6a, 6b that face away from each other may for instance be made of convex design, for instance with a curvature.
- the lock housing in itself may be provided with housing cover parts 36a, 36b which, for instance, cover the coupling elements 11.
- the lock may be provided with end arms with coupling parts 11 having a circular outside and a circular inside, but this is not requisite.
- Such coupling parts (for instance the inside and/or outside thereof) may also be of a different shape, for instance oval, angular or the like.
- lock parts 6a, 6b may each be shaped in different ways, for instance disk-shaped, round, oval, angular or otherwise. As follows from the above, it is then at least advantageous if the two lock parts 6a,b are rotatable relative to each other.
