Description

The present invention relates to a knife having a handle and a hinged blade on the handle, retractable in an interior space of the latter, and capable of being deployed for use substantially in the longitudinal axis of the handle.

  • d'une première virole, dite virole fixe, en forme de bague fendue, emmanchée à l'extrémité du manche et traversée par l'axe d'articulation de la lame sur le manche ;
The invention relates more specifically to such a knife provided:
  • a first ferrule, said ferrule fixed, split ring-shaped, fitted at the end of the handle and traversed by the axis of articulation of the blade on the handle;
  • a second ferrule, called a rotating ferrule, in the form of a split ring, arranged concentrically with the fixed ferrule (at the end of the shaft at the axis of rotation of the blade), and able to turn on itself , along the longitudinal axis of the handle.

The slot provided on each respective ferrule allows the passage of the blade from the folded position (in the handle) to the deployed position and vice versa.

In order to block the blade in the deployed position of use, for safety reasons, the user rotates the rotating shell, which makes the proximal portion of the blade (towards the handle) against the distal periphery of the shell, preventing the pivoting of the blade and thus maintaining it in position.

In order to maintain the ferrule and prevent its accidental removal, knives known of the above type usually have a peripheral bead, creating a concavity groove turned inward, and complementary to the rivet head (constituting the hinge axis of the blade) protruding beyond the fixed ferrule.

Although this system has proved its worth, attempts have been made to improve it.

For example, we know by the patent FR 2,859,658 a knife of the general type described above, and whose rotating shell comprises a second groove, spaced from the first groove and cooperating with a projecting element provided on the fixed ferrule.

This device, although trying to provide a solution to the problem mentioned, is not free of drawbacks.

  • complique la fabrication et la rend donc plus onéreuse ;
  • affecte esthétiquement l'aspect du couteau ;
  • affecte la solidité de la virole tournante ;
Indeed, the presence of the second throat:
  • complicates the manufacture and makes it more expensive;
  • aesthetically affects the appearance of the knife;
  • affects the strength of the rotating shell;
  • makes it much less convenient gripping the ferrule to perform the rotation maneuver of the rotating shell.

The invention overcomes these drawbacks and proposes a knife of the type mentioned in the preamble and whose rotating shell comprises means intended on the one hand to improve the rotation of the rotating shell relative to the fixed shell, and on the other hand to strengthen the maintenance of the rotating shell, without affecting the economic conditions of manufacture or handling of the shell, and these means according to the invention being revealed more discreet.

To this end, according to the invention, the knife provided with a handle and a blade mounted to rotate at one end of the handle, between a deployed position out of the handle and in alignment thereof, and a folded position in a space provided in the handle, a rotating shell disposed at the end of the handle at the axis of rotation of the blade, and adapted to turn on itself along the longitudinal axis of the handle, said rotating ferrule being formed of a split ring and being provided with means for guiding and holding the ferrule, is characterized in that said guiding and holding means comprise on the one hand a male guiding element, projecting and disposed on the rotating shell, directed towards the inside thereof, and on the other hand a female fixed guiding element disposed on the handle or on an organ fixed on the latter, the female fixed guide element being of complementary shape and being adapted to receive and guide said protruding guide element.

Said female fixed guide element is advantageously formed of a groove, circular in shape for a circular section handle.

In a preferred form, the knife further comprises a fixed ferrule fitted at the end of the handle and traversed by the axis of articulation of the blade on the handle, the respectively fixed and rotating ferrules being arranged concentrically. In this embodiment with a fixed ferrule, the female fixed guide element (such as the circular guide groove) is provided on the latter, and preferably through the thickness of the fixed ferrule.

According to one characteristic, the male element is made by deformation, for example by stamping, of a part of the wall of the rotating shell.

Par exemple :

  • l'élément en saillie présente une longueur (dans le sens de rotation de la virole tournante) de 2 à 6 mm (de préférence de 3 mm), et une largeur de 1,5 à 2 mm ;
    1. 1. largeur de 5 à 20 % supérieure, et de préférence de l'ordre de 10% ;
    2. 2. épaisseur de 25 à 50% supérieure.
For example :
  • the protruding element has a length (in the direction of rotation of the rotating shell) of 2 to 6 mm (preferably 3 mm), and a width of 1.5 to 2 mm;
  • the groove, on the fixed shell, has a width and a depth greater than those of the projecting element, and more precisely:
    1. 1. width of 5 to 20% higher, and preferably of the order of 10%;
    2. 2. 25 to 50% greater thickness.

Par exemple :

  • la largeur de l'élément en saillie est de 2 mm, et la largeur de la rainure est de 2.2 mm pour la virole fixe ;
For example :
  • the width of the protruding element is 2 mm, and the width of the groove is 2.2 mm for the fixed ferrule;
  • the depth of the projecting element is 0.8 mm and the depth of the groove is 1 mm to 1.2 mm.

This arrangement allows the displacement of the projecting element in the groove, with slight friction without, however, hindering the rotation of the rotating shell.

In this embodiment, the groove on the fixed ferrule is in a circular arc extends between 80 ° and 140 °, and preferably between 100 and 120 °, and even more preferably 110 °.

Advantageously, the rotating shell has a notch on the distal peripheral edge (facing the blade), at the end of the slot, and on one side of the slot.

This limits the rotational stroke of the rotating shell, between two extreme positions, opening for the passage of the blade in the slot, and blocking the blade in the active deployed position. So, the arcuate length of the groove is limited on the fixed groove, which reduces the risk of embrittlement of the latter.

The distal notch is bevel-shaped according to a rectilinear inclined segment, of a length following an arc of a circle of between 15 ° and 45 ° and preferably of about 30 °.

To lock the blade in the folded position in the handle, the fixed ferrule further comprises a notch in the proximal peripheral portion (towards the handle) on one side of the slot.

This proximal notch is shaped shoulder substantially rectangular or trapezoidal shape, and advantageously ends with a straight portion parallel to said axis of rotation of the rotating shell.

In the remainder of the description, the terms "distal" and "proximal" describe, in the context of normal use of the knife held by the hand by a user, positions relative to the user. , the proximal qualifier being closer to the user.

The Figure 1A represents the knife of the invention, seen from the side, the blade being in the deployed position, that is to say substantially in the longitudinal axis of the knife. The Figure 1B shows the same knife, in perspective, on a reduced scale, the blade being folded in the handle.

With reference to the Figure 1A , the knife 1 of the invention comprises a handle 2 and a blade 3 mounted articulated on the handle, along a diametrical transverse axis, between a first position where the blade is deployed and ready for use, as shown in FIG. Figure 1A and a folded position out of use, as shown on the Figure 1B , where the blade 3 is disposed in the handle 2, and more precisely in a longitudinal slot of the latter.

The handle is generally cylindrical. It is either wood or thermoformable plastic material.

At the distal end of the handle 2, that is to say on the side of the proximal end of the blade 3, there is provided a locking system 4 of the blade, described later, and having a fixed ferrule and a rotating shell.

Ladite partie 5 d'extrémité est pourvue de deux trous traversants 5A et 5B diamétralement opposés, au milieu de la partie 5.With reference to the figure 2 , showing from above an exploded view of the knife of the Figure 1A , the distal end of the handle 2 comprises a portion 5 of smaller diameter provided with a longitudinal slot 6. Said end portion 5 is provided with two through holes 5A and 5B diametrically opposite, in the middle of the portion 5.

At its proximal end, the blade 3 has a heel 3A ( figure 2 ) provided with a through hole (which is not visible), and in which is intended to penetrate the slot 6 of the narrowed portion 5 of the handle.

The blade being held stationary, a ferrule 8, called fixed ferrule, consisting of a split ring shown in perspective on the figure 3 , is advanced in abutment against the shoulder 7 of the handle. Then, the tenon 5 of the handle 2 is penetrated into the shell 8 until it abuts against the shoulder 7 of the narrowed portion 5.

The fixed shell 8 has a longitudinal slot 9 and two through holes 10 and 11 diametrically opposite substantially in the middle of the ring.

Once the blade 3 in place on the handle 2, the fixed ferrule 8 is put on the blade 3 to overlap the latter, and then the fixed ferrule 8 is slid until it covers the narrowed end portion 5. The ferrule 8 is fitted with friction on the end portion of the handle.

Then, we put on a rivet 12 (with head 13) as illustrated on the figure 2 , successively in:
  • the first through hole 10 of the ferrule 8, then
  • the first through hole 5A provided in the end portion 5,
  • the hole provided in blade 3,
  • the second collinear hole 5B provided in part 5, and
  • the hole 11 of the ferrule 8.

On aboutit ainsi à la position représentée sur la figure 4, montrant en partie le manche 2, à l'extrémité 5 duquel est disposée la virole fixe 8, d'où dépasse latéralement et radialement la tête 13 du rivet 12.This leads to the position represented on the figure 4 , partially showing the handle 2, at the end 5 of which is disposed the fixed ferrule 8, from which laterally and radially exceeds the head 13 of the rivet 12.

The blade 3, thus articulated on the handle 2, via the rivet 12, is adapted to pivot about the axis formed by the rivet, between the two extreme positions mentioned above, according to the Figures 1A and 1B .

In order to block the blade 3, in one and / or the other of the two extreme positions, that is to say out of use, and in use, there is provided a second shell 14, called a rotating ferrule .

The rotating ferrule 14 consists of a split ring with a longitudinal slot 15. It has an inside diameter very slightly lower (in order to create a slight clamping for a running operation without play) to the outer diameter of the fixed shell 8. The rotating shell 14 is intended to be arranged concentrically and to overlap the fixed ferrule 8, as shown in FIGS. Figures 1A , 1B and 8 . The rotating shell is elastically deformed during its setting, and creates the mentioned clamping.

A bead 16 projecting outwards and of circular shape, is provided substantially in the middle of the rotating shell 14. The shape and size of the bead define on the opposite face of the shell a groove for receiving the head 13 of the rivet 12.

Thanks to the means of the invention, described hereinafter in detail, the rotational guidance of the rotating shell relative to the fixed ferrule is optimally achieved, without the head 13 of the rivet on the one hand and the groove defined by the bead 16 on the other hand do not intervene in this regard.

According to the invention, there are provided means on the one hand to secure the maintenance of the rotating shell, and on the other hand to ensure optimal guidance of the latter.

  • sur la virole fixe 8, un élément femelle formée d'une lumière ou rainure 17 en arc de cercle ;
With reference to Figures 2, 3, 5A and 5B , said means comprise:
  • on the fixed ferrule 8, a female element formed of a lumen or groove 17 in an arc of a circle;
  • on the rotating shell 14, a male element projecting towards the inside of the shell, and forming a pin 18.

The lug 18 and the slot or groove 17 are of complementary shape and size, so that the lug 18 can penetrate and slide along the arc defined by the groove 17, once the rotating shell 14 place concentrically around the fixed ferrule 8.

For example, for a knife having an active length blade of 85 mm and a handle diameter of 20 mm, the fixed ferrule has an internal diameter of 13.5 mm, the groove 17 has a width, in the longitudinal direction of the knife, 1.5 to 2.5 mm, and preferably 2.2 mm, and a length in a circular arc between 10 and 20 mm, and preferably about 14 mm.

In this same example, the lug 18 has a length in the circumferential direction of between 3 and 5 mm, preferably of the order of 4 mm.

The width of the lug 18, in the longitudinal direction of the knife, is very slightly less than the width of the groove 17. "Very slightly lower" is understood to mean a difference of between 5 and 15%, preferably of order of 10%. In any case, this difference is such that it allows the sliding of the lug 18 in the light 17, without friction.

The Figure 5B shows a partial perspective view of the rotating shell 14. According to a preferred embodiment, the lug 18 is made by cutting and deformation of the wall of the rotating shell, and in particular by stamping or any known method of cold deformation.

The lug 18, thus made of material in the thickness of the shell, has the shape of a U whose base 19 is in an arc of approximately 4 mm, and is extended to the wall of the shell by two inclined branches 20 and 21. The deformation of the material constituting the wall of the rotating shell 14 to form the pin 18 has created an opening 22.

We have shown on the figure 7 , a diametral sectional view, showing a detail of the knife, and particularly the two respectively fixed 8 and rotating ferrules 14, at the level of the cooperation between the pin 18 and the light 17.

The rotating shell 14 can thus be rotated by the user, and guided in rotation by the cooperation of the head 13 of the rivet 12 with the groove defined by the bead 16, but especially by the cooperation between the pin 18 and the light 17 (the latter provided on the fixed ferrule 8).

L'ergot 18 et la lumière 17 constituent en outre et surtout des moyens permettant d'empêcher l'enlèvement accidentel de la virole tournante 14.The lug 18 and the light 17 also constitute, and above all, means enabling the accidental removal of the rotating shell 14 to be prevented.

The knife of the invention also comprises means for blocking the blade, in its two respective end positions, namely out of use ( Figure 1B ), and in use ( Figure 1A ).

With reference to figures 6 , 8 and 9 the rotating ferrule 14 comprises:
  • On its distal end edge, that is to say toward the blade 3, a bevelled edge 23 consisting of a substantially straight inclined segment, and against which is capable of carrying (or abutting) the blade 3 in position use of the latter, as shown on the figure 9 .
  • On its proximal edge, the side of the handle, a recess 24 forming a shoulder 25 against which is adapted to carry (or come into abutment) one of the side faces of the blade 3, in closed position out of use.

It should be noted that the rotating ferrule 14 having the beveled edge 23 (distal) only on one side of the slot 15, the user is thus obliged to turn the shell 14 in a given direction, starting from a position given.

On réduit par là fortement l'incidence de cette rainure sur la rigidité et la résistance de la virole fixe 8.This characteristic has an effect on the dimension of the groove 17 provided on the fixed ferrule 8, in particular on its length in the circumference. Indeed, the angular clearance of the rotating shell being limited, this limits the circumferential length of the groove 17. This greatly reduces the incidence of this groove on the rigidity and strength of the fixed ferrule 8.

Les viroles fixe 8 et tournante 14 et le rivet 12 sont en acier ou en Inox®.The fixed 8 and rotating ferrules 14 and the rivet 12 are made of steel or stainless steel.
