Description

  • The present invention relates to a household appliance comprising a steam generator and the control method thereof.
  • Steam generators are used to prevent creases in the laundry, cleansing the laundry from bad odors in washers like washing machine and laundry washer dryers, to humidify the cooking chamber in cooking devices like oven and to provide hygiene in dishwashers. In steam generators, it is aimed to effectively convert water into steam effectively. In the steam generators supplied by mains water, clogging of the pipes due to calcification decrease the effectiveness of the steam generator. Furthermore, the generated steam leaving from the steam outlet opening and also from the water inlet opening causes the amount of steam delivered to the tub to decrease and the steam to concentrate in unwanted areas in the appliance.
  • In the Patent Application No. EP2287583 , a washing machine is disclosed having a steam generator wherein the temperature is measured by NTC sensors.
  • In the Patent Application No. US2005034489 , a washing machine comprising a steam generator is disclosed wherein the heater is arranged inside a hermetic container.
  • In the Patent Application No. US2013047346 , a steam generator for a washing apparatus is disclosed in which a housing is filled with water during a given water supply time. Next, a heater is operated until the temperature of the housing surpasses a predetermined value which indicates that the water in the housing has completely been evaporated. If the operation time of the heater is shorter than a predetermined limit, this indicates an initial water amount below a normal value, due to a low pressure in the water supply line, and the water supply time for the next filling phase is increased.
  • The aim of the present invention is the realization of a household appliance comprising a steam generator, of which the production and assembly costs are decreased.
  • The household appliance realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, comprises a control unit that enables water to be taken into the steam generator by deciding that the water level has fallen under the minimum water level if the time period the heater reaches from the cut-in temperature to the cut-off temperature is less than a time period prerecorded in its memory.
  • In the following description, the expression "cut-off" and "cut-out" are used as synonyms.
  • In accordance with the present invention, a channel is situated that extend from the inlet opening on the reservoir into the reservoir and towards under the predetermined minimum water level. Thus, when the steam generator generates steam, steam is not discharged from the inlet opening in any way and the generated steam is enabled to be utilized almost entirely. Furthermore, since steam is not discharged from the inlet opening, water condensation is prevented in undesired areas, for example in the water inlet line, in areas where the electronic components of the household appliance are located.
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, a thermal fuse is used in order to cut off the current supplied to the heater in case of any problems. For example, in the situation wherein the temperature sensor malfunctions and the heater is supplied with continuous current, the thermal fuse blows out and the household appliance is prevented from damage.
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the heater is of helical configuration wound around the reservoir. That the heater is wound around the reservoir provides a smaller contact area and water is heated faster with the same amount of power.
  • The household appliance of the present invention can be a washing machine, laundry washer dryer, dishwasher or a cooking device like oven.
  • In an embodiment of the present invention, the steam generator is controlled by the steps of:
    • Receiving water from the inlet opening,
    • Cutting water intake as water is discharged from the outlet opening,
    • Operating the heater,
    • Operating the heater until the surface of the heater reaches the cut-off temperature
    • Turning off the heater when the surface of the heater reaches the cut-off temperature,
    • Operating the heater again when the temperature of the surface of the heater falls to reach the cut-in temperature,
    • Repeating the last two steps for a certain time period.
  • In the household appliance of the present invention, the thermal fuse is used in order to stop operation of the heater in any kind of problem. The channel, extending below the minimum water level, stays continuously in the water thanks to the control unit detecting the temperature change rate on the surface of the heater and it is not required to use a water level sensor in the reservoir. Production and assembly costs are enabled to be decreased by not using extra equipments, for example liquid level sensors, on the steam generator except the reservoir, the heater, the temperature sensor that are required for steam generation.
  • The steam generator realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where:
    • Figure 1 - is the perspective view of a steam generator.
    • Figure 2 - is the perspective view of a steam generator from another angle.
    • Figure 3 - is the top perspective view of a steam generator and a control unit.
    • Figure 4 - is the partial cross-sectional view of a steam generator.
  • The elements illustrated in the figures are numbered as follows:
    1. 1. Steam generator
    2. 2. Reservoir
    3. 3. Inlet opening
    4. 4. Outlet opening
    5. 5. Heater
    6. 6. Temperature sensor
    7. 7. Thermal fuse
    8. 8. Channel
    9. 9. Control unit
  • The household appliance comprises a steam generator (1) having a reservoir (2) wherein water is stored, at least one inlet opening (3) and at least one outlet opening (4) arranged on the reservoir (2), a heater (5) that heats the water inside the reservoir (2) and a temperature sensor (6) that measures the temperature of the heater (5).
  • The household appliance of the present invention comprises a control unit (9) that enables water to be taken into the steam generator (1) by deciding that the water level has fallen under the minimum water level (h_min) and that the heater (5) is heated quickly due to low water level if the cut-in - cut-out time period of the heater (5) is less than a limit cut-in - cut-out time period (t_lim) prerecorded in its memory.
  • In the household appliance of the present invention, the reservoir (2) is filled in with water from the inlet opening (3). The reservoir (2) is heated by the heater (5) and the generated steam is delivered to the respective area from the outlet opening (4). The temperature sensor (6) measures the temperature of the heater (5) surface and relays the data to the control unit (9). The control unit (9) cuts off the current delivered to the heater (5) that has reached a predetermined cut-off temperature and supplies current to the heater (5) again when the temperature falls to reach a predetermined cut-in temperature. This process continues until steam is generated in the amount and/or time period determined by the user or the manufacturer. When the water level in the reservoir (2) decreases, the temperature of the heater (5) surface increases faster and thus the cut-off temperature is reached in a shorter time period. When the time period the surface of the heater (5) reaches from the cut-in temperature to the cut-off temperature is shorter than the time period of reaching from the cut-in temperature to the cut-off temperature prerecorded in the memory of the control unit (9), the control unit (9) decides that the water in the reservoir (2) has fallen below the minimum level (h_min) and enables water to be taken into the reservoir (2).
  • In accordance with the present invention, the steam generator (1) comprises a channel (8) that extends from the inlet opening (3) to below the predetermined minimum water level (h_min) that is required to generate steam efficiently.
