Definitions
- the requirement that the stamping elements have an identical basic shape means that the defect-free basic shape of the stamping elements is identical, but allows the stamping elements to have different sizes.
- the basic shapes of the embossing elements are therefore mathematically similar to one another but not necessarily congruent. In advantageous designs, however, the basic shapes of the embossing elements are even congruent, and therefore have the same size in addition to the identical shape. In other designs, the embossing elements have an identical basic shape, for example a random size distribution within a certain one Size interval.
- the size of the local defects preferably scales with the size of the embossing elements, so that the relative proportions are retained despite different absolute sizes.
- the optically active elements are formed by lenses arranged above the reflection layer, the lenses preferably being arranged at a distance of essentially half a focal length above the reflection layer.
- the local defects are advantageously integrated into the lens surface.
- the reflection layer is advantageously flat and forms a plane mirror. As explained in more detail below, such a security element can be made substantially thinner than conventional lens designs with a comparable optical impression, since the focal plane of the lens lies on the lens itself through the mirror plane.
- the embossing elements have depressions which are filled with a transparent or translucent material, in particular a transparent or translucent lacquer.
- the transparent or translucent material can also be in the form of a cover layer completely covering the reflection layer.
- the depressions are preferably filled using printing technology, in particular screen printing or flexographic printing, a lacquer curing at elevated temperature or under UV radiation being used with advantage.
- the local defects represent embossing substructures within the embossing elements, which were preferably produced simultaneously with the embossing elements, with particular advantage. This enables particularly effective production, since the production of the embossed elements and the local defects then only requires one work step. In addition, perfect registration of stamping elements and defects is ensured, even if, for example, manufacturing-related dimensional fluctuations occur in the stamping element grid.
- the local defects are preferably spaced from the base area of the embossing elements, so that all embossing elements have a circumferential, defect-free area adjacent to the base area. This ensures in particular that the optically variable information is not already visible without directional lighting or from all viewing angles is. This increases the optical variability and the copy protection effect.
- a 1 is much smaller than a 0 and a 0 is much smaller than a ÜG .
- much smaller means a factor of 3 or more, in particular 5 or more, in the superlattice period even advantageously 10 or more. It is understood that other superlattice periods can also be considered, as well as the same or different superlattice periods in different lattice directions.
- the defects represent embossing substructures that are generated in one embossing step simultaneously with the embossing elements.
- the defects are generated by laser exposure to defect-free embossing elements.
- the refractive optical elements are formed by curved structures, in particular by concavely curved or convexly curved structures.
- the curved structures can in particular be spherically curved, astigmatic or trough-shaped.
- the channels can be straight or curved.
- the formation of the curved structures as Fresnel structures can also be considered. In this case, the defects are advantageously arranged on one or more of the annular regions of the Fresnel structure.
- the refractive optical elements can also be formed by pyramidal structures.
- the base area of a pyramid-shaped refractive optical element can be any polygon, in particular a triangle or a square. All of the forms mentioned can be designed as recesses or surveys.
- the invention also includes a data carrier with a security element of the type described.
- the data carrier can in particular be a document of value, such as a banknote, in particular a paper banknote, a polymer banknote or a composite film banknote, but also an identification card, such as a credit card Trade a bank card, a cash payment card, an authorization card, an identity card or a passport personalization page.
- the security element can be arranged, in particular, in or above a window area or a continuous opening of the data carrier.
- the distance between adjacent embossing elements results from the difference between the raster width Rw of the square grid and the diameter of the embossing elements 30, 32 (which here corresponds to the smallest dimension of the base area of the embossing elements 30, 32) and is 25 ⁇ m in the exemplary embodiment.
- the observer 14 perceives the defects 34 introduced on the left flank of the embossing elements 32 collectively, so that the defective embossing elements 32 form a contrast with the defect-free embossing elements 30 and make the optically variable information “PL” visible.
- viewer 14 also looks at unchanged areas of the basic shape in the case of the defective embossed elements 32, so that there is no contrast between the defective ones from these directions Embossing elements 32 and the defect-free embossing elements 30 are formed and the optically variable information is not visible.
- an easily recognizable and securely accessible change of information is created.
- the local defects 62, 66, 70, 74 each do not extend to the base area 76 of the embossing elements, so that all the embossing elements have an all-round defect-free area 78 adjacent to the base area 76.
- the local defects present as corrugations 86 in the side surface 84 of a subset of embossing elements 82 do not extend to the base surface of the embossing elements, so that the embossing elements of the subset have a circumferential, defect-free area adjacent to the base surface .
- Figure 14 shows as a further embodiment a security element 220, in which the local defects 34 of the defective embossing elements 32 are in the form of characters or patterns.
- the embossing elements 30, 32 are hemispherical hollow spheres which are arranged in a regular grid, here a square grid of the grid period R P.
- the local defects 34 are in the exemplary embodiment in FIG Form of the letter sequence "PL" formed.
- the local defects also form a regular square grid, the grid period R D of which is however slightly, for example 2% larger than the grid period R P of the embossed elements. Accordingly, the relative position of the local defects 34 on the basic embossing element shapes slowly changes with the location. Due to the two slightly different grids of the embossed elements and the local defects, the viewing direction from which a local defect 34 is visible thus also changes slowly with the location and visually impressive moiré effects arise.
- Figure 9 shows a modification of the embodiment of FIG Figures 2 and 3 , wherein the security element 130 of Fig. 9 in contrast to the design described above, has a transparent film 132 as a carrier substrate.
- a transparent lacquer layer 134 which also fills the depressions of the embossing elements, can optionally also be applied over the reflection layer 26 with the embossing elements 30, 32.
- the grid of the embossing elements 30, 32 with the defects 34 is both from the top and also visible from the underside of the security element 130, the embossing elements acting on the top as a concave mirror for the viewing direction and as a curved mirror for the viewing direction on the underside.
- the layer thickness of the embossing lacquer layer 166 is selected and matched to the lens shape such that the lenses 162, 168 are at a distance of half a focal length f / 2 from the flat reflection layer 164.
- the flat reflection layer 164 forms a plane mirror through which the lenses 162, 168 image their lens surface themselves and thereby make the presence or absence of the defects 170 in the respective lenses recognizable depending on the viewing angle.
- the folding of the beam path through the plane mirror 164 is for vertical viewing through the beam path 172 in Fig. 11 illustrated.
- the defects 188 lead to a fading out and / or a change due to the change in the light rays emanating from the display 190 the display, which can be used to determine the authenticity of the security element.
- Figure 13 shows a banknote 210 with a paper substrate 212 and a through opening 214, which with a security element 180 of the in Fig. 12 shown type is closed on one side.
- the banknote 210 is placed on a self-illuminating display 200 and the optically variable information is thereby called up.

Description
The invention relates to security elements for displaying at least one optically variable piece of information, a method for producing such security elements and a data carrier with such security elements.
Data carriers, such as documents of value or identity documents, but also other valuable objects, such as branded articles, are often provided with security elements for security purposes, which allow the authenticity of the data carrier to be checked and which at the same time serve as protection against unauthorized reproduction.
Security elements with viewing angle-dependent effects play a special role in ensuring authenticity, since these cannot be reproduced even with the most modern copying machines. The security elements are equipped with optically variable elements that convey a different image impression to the viewer from different viewing angles and, for example, show a different color or brightness impression and / or a different graphic motif depending on the viewing angle.
Proceeding from this, the present invention is based on the object of specifying a security element of the type mentioned at the outset with a high level of imitation security and an attractive visual appearance, which ideally can also be checked for authenticity by laypersons.
This object is solved by the features of the independent claims. Developments of the invention are the subject of the dependent claims.
- a carrier substrate with opposite first and second main surfaces,
- a reflection layer arranged on the first main surface, and
- a grid of optically active elements present in or above the reflection layer, which are formed by embossing elements of identical basic shape,
- wherein the grid of optically effective elements contains at least one optically variable information that can be recognized in the case of directional lighting without aids in reflection, which is formed by a subset of the embossing elements, in which at least one local defect is introduced into the identical basic shape, through which the optical appearance of the defective embossed element is changed depending on the viewing angle.
The requirement that the stamping elements have an identical basic shape means that the defect-free basic shape of the stamping elements is identical, but allows the stamping elements to have different sizes. The basic shapes of the embossing elements are therefore mathematically similar to one another but not necessarily congruent. In advantageous designs, however, the basic shapes of the embossing elements are even congruent, and therefore have the same size in addition to the identical shape. In other designs, the embossing elements have an identical basic shape, for example a random size distribution within a certain one Size interval. In this case, as explained in more detail below, the size of the local defects preferably scales with the size of the embossing elements, so that the relative proportions are retained despite different absolute sizes.
The optically active elements can be designed as reflective or refractive optical elements. In particular, the optically active elements are designed such that they have no optically diffractive effect.
In an advantageous embodiment, the optically active elements are formed by curved structures, in particular by concavely curved or convexly curved structures. The curved structures, together with the reflective layer, advantageously form concave mirrors (concave curved mirrors) or curved mirrors (convex curved mirrors). The curved structures can in particular be spherically curved, astigmatic or trough-shaped. The channels can be straight or curved. The formation of the curved structures as Fresnel structures can also be considered. In this case, the defects are advantageously arranged on one or more of the annular regions of the Fresnel structure. In addition, the optically active elements can also be formed by pyramid-shaped structures. The base area of a pyramid-shaped optically active element can be any polygon, in particular a triangle, square or hexagon. All of the forms mentioned can be designed as recesses or surveys.
In expedient designs, the embossing elements are formed by depressions. In some designs, it may be advisable to additionally lower the defective embossed elements from the base in order to To make the optically variable information clearer, for example in the form of a contour line. Correspondingly, in the case of training as elevations, the defective embossed elements can additionally be increased in relation to the base area.
In another, likewise advantageous embodiment, the optically active elements are formed by lenses arranged above the reflection layer, the lenses preferably being arranged at a distance of essentially half a focal length above the reflection layer. The local defects are advantageously integrated into the lens surface. In this embodiment, the reflection layer is advantageously flat and forms a plane mirror. As explained in more detail below, such a security element can be made substantially thinner than conventional lens designs with a comparable optical impression, since the focal plane of the lens lies on the lens itself through the mirror plane.
In expedient designs, the embossing elements have depressions which are filled with a transparent or translucent material, in particular a transparent or translucent lacquer. The transparent or translucent material can also be in the form of a cover layer completely covering the reflection layer. The depressions are preferably filled using printing technology, in particular screen printing or flexographic printing, a lacquer curing at elevated temperature or under UV radiation being used with advantage.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the local defects are each formed by a bulge, a bulge, a recess, in particular a demetalization, or a modification of the surface structure of the basic shape of the embossed elements. The modification can for example, in a blackening or other discoloration, or in a change in the reflection properties (smooth / rough, higher / lower reflectivity). A modification of the surface structure can also be achieved by the local provision of micro- or nanostructures, such as holograms, moth eye structures or sub-wavelength gratings.
The local defects represent embossing substructures within the embossing elements, which were preferably produced simultaneously with the embossing elements, with particular advantage. This enables particularly effective production, since the production of the embossed elements and the local defects then only requires one work step. In addition, perfect registration of stamping elements and defects is ensured, even if, for example, manufacturing-related dimensional fluctuations occur in the stamping element grid.
In advantageous configurations, the local defects take up only a small part of the surface of the basic shape of the embossing elements, in particular less than 33%, preferably even less than 10%. On the one hand, this creates a sharply defined visibility area for the optically variable information; on the other hand, several different optically variable information can also be accommodated in one embossing element grid.
The local defects are preferably spaced from the base area of the embossing elements, so that all embossing elements have a circumferential, defect-free area adjacent to the base area. This ensures in particular that the optically variable information is not already visible without directional lighting or from all viewing angles is. This increases the optical variability and the copy protection effect.
Furthermore, the local defects are advantageously arranged eccentrically within the basic shape. In particular, the local defects are arranged outside the center of the basic shape on one of the flanks of the basic shape.
In advantageous configurations, the shape of the local defects is the same in all the embossing elements of the subset and / or the local defects are introduced in all the embossing elements of the subset at the same point in the basic shape of the embossing elements. In addition to the shape, the size of the local defects can also be the same, namely in particular if the size of the embossing elements of the subset is the same. If, on the other hand, the size of the embossing elements varies, the size of the local defects preferably scales with the size of the embossing elements, so that the relative proportions of defects and embossing elements remain unchanged.
Alternatively, the shape or color of the defects can slowly change over the surface of the embossing element grid. In this case too, the size of the defects advantageously scales with the size of the embossing elements. It can also be provided that the defect position changes slowly within the basic shape, so that the viewing direction from which the defects are visible also changes slowly. A slow change means that the viewing direction from which a defect is visible changes from one embossing element to the next only by a small angle, namely by 4 ° or less, preferably even only by 2 ° or less. Depending on the type of position change, the defects arranged at different positions become visible one after the other when the safety element is tilted or rotated.
The embossing elements of the subset and the local defects can also each be arranged in a periodic grid, the grid periods of which differ slightly and / or which are rotated relative to one another, so that beat effects and / or moiré effects can occur. The grid periods advantageously differ by less than 10%, in particular less than 5% or even less than 2%. If the grids are rotated relative to one another, the rotation is advantageously less than 5 °, in particular less than 2 ° or even less than 1 °.
The local defects are preferably in the form of characters or patterns.
In advantageous configurations, the distance between adjacent optically active elements is at least in one spatial direction not more than 20%, preferably not more than 10%, particularly preferably not more than 5% of the smallest dimension of the base area of the embossed elements.
Die Prägetiefe, bzw. im Fall von Erhebungen die Prägehöhe, liegt typischerweise zwischen 3 µm und 200 µm.Depending on the application, the base area of the embossed elements typically has a smallest dimension of 2 µm to 2000 µm. If the embossing layer, ie the layer in which the pattern of the embossing elements is formed, is a foil or foil-based, the smallest dimension is preferably between 5 μm and 500 μm, in particular between 10 μm and 300 μm. The embossing depth, or in the case of surveys the embossing height, is typically between 3 µm and 200 µm.
In an advantageous embodiment, the optically active elements have different sizes, the size of the local defects in the subset of the embossing elements preferably having the size of the basic shape Embossed elements scaled. The size of the optically active elements can vary regularly or irregularly, for example according to a random distribution.
The security element can also represent a plurality of optically variable information items, each of which is formed by a subset of the embossing elements provided with defects. Different defects are preferably provided in different subsets and / or defects are introduced in different subsets at different points in the basic shape of the embossing elements. For example, two pieces of information can be encoded by defects arranged on opposite flanks of the embossing elements, so that the respective pieces of information are only visible from essentially opposite viewing directions.
In addition to tilting images with alternating image motifs, it is also possible in this way to generate motion images in which an image motif appears to move or change when the security element is tilted or rotated, for example, seems to enlarge or shrink. Designs are also impressive, in which an image motif seems to retain its position against the intuition when the security element is tilted or rotated. In this case, the image motif executes a movement coded in the grid, which just compensates for the movement of the security element by tilting or rotating, so that the image motif appears to remain stationary in the result.
In an advantageous development of the invention, the carrier substrate contains an intaglio printing feature which is arranged in register with the grid of optically active elements. As explained below, can be achieve this by generating an intaglio printing feature and embossing element grid in a common printing and embossing step.
The carrier substrate can consist of paper, in particular cotton paper, plastic or a composite consisting of different materials.
The reflection layer has the highest possible reflection, preferably 30% or more of the reflected intensity being due to the directional reflection. The reflection layer can in particular be formed by a layer with metallic pigments, for example silver pigments, in a binder. In this case, the reflection layer is preferably applied by means of screen printing. The reflection layer can also be formed by a metallic or metal-coated film, or by an applied metal patch in the form of a metallized, for. B. with aluminum or silver vaporized cold or hot stamping foil. Single-layer or multi-layer highly reflective layers or colored layers of high surface quality can also have a reflective effect and can therefore be used as a reflection layer according to the invention.
The grid of the optically active elements is preferably periodic in at least one spatial direction. The symmetry of the grid is advantageously selected from the group of square grids, rectangular grids, diamond grids, hexagon grids and parallelogram grids.
In periodic arrangements, adjacent optically active elements in a grating direction have a fixed center-to-center distance a (distance between the centers of the adjacent optically active elements). In addition to such periodic orders, there are also aperiodic orders the optically active elements into consideration, in which the center-to-center distance of adjacent elements is given by a + rnd (b, c), where rnd (b, c) denotes a random number in the interval [b, c]. For example, a = 325 µm and the random number can be selected from the interval [-20 µm, + 50 µm], so that the center-to-center distance of adjacent elements varies randomly in the range [305 µm, 375 µm].
- a carrier substrate with opposite first and second main surfaces is provided,
- a reflection layer is arranged on the first main surface,
- a grid of optically effective elements is formed in or above the reflection layer, which are formed by embossing elements of identical basic shape, and
- a subset of the embossing elements is provided with at least one local defect in the identical basic shape, by means of which the optical appearance of the defective embossing element is changed depending on the viewing angle, so that the raster of optically effective elements has at least one optically variable information that can be recognized in the case of directional lighting without aids in reflection having.
The reflection layer can be applied to the carrier substrate by printing technology, preferably by flexographic printing or screen printing. The carrier substrate can be a rough substrate, such as a paper or cotton paper substrate, but also on a smooth substrate, such as a polymer substrate or a film of a multilayer composite, in particular a composite of several different films or a paper-film composite.
The embossing elements or embossing structures are preferably embossed in intaglio printing, in particular by blind embossing. Through the simultaneous use of color-leading intaglio printing and a colorless blind embossing on the same stitching machine, it is possible to integrate different designs on the carrier substrate in a precise manner in different sub-areas of the substrate. In particular, it is possible for the embossed elements described in this application to be produced in blind embossing without register fluctuations to generate further designs or security features of the carrier substrate. Such an accurate registration cannot be adjusted if the production steps are carried out separately and therefore gives the security element an extraordinarily high level of security against forgery.
In an advantageous method variant, the defects represent embossing substructures that are generated in one embossing step simultaneously with the embossing elements. In another, likewise advantageous process variant, the defects are generated by laser exposure to defect-free embossing elements.
- an at least partially transparent or translucent carrier substrate, and
- a grid of refractive optical elements present in a transparent or translucent area of the carrier substrate, which are formed by embossing elements of identical basic shape,
- wherein the grid of refractive optical elements contains at least one optically variable information that can be recognized when illuminated with a self-illuminating display without aids, which is formed by a subset of the embossing elements, in which at least one local defect is introduced into the identical basic shape, by which the optical Appearance of the defective embossed element is changed depending on the viewing angle.
The at least partially transparent or translucent carrier substrate can consist of a transparent or translucent film, or also of paper that is partially cut out and sealed with a transparent or translucent film. A film made of polyamide, polyester, polyethylene or biaxially oriented polypropylene can be considered as a transparent or translucent film. The film can also be colored.
In an advantageous embodiment of the second aspect of the invention, the refractive optical elements are formed by curved structures, in particular by concavely curved or convexly curved structures. The curved structures can in particular be spherically curved, astigmatic or trough-shaped. The channels can be straight or curved. The formation of the curved structures as Fresnel structures can also be considered. In this case, the defects are advantageously arranged on one or more of the annular regions of the Fresnel structure. In addition, the refractive optical elements can also be formed by pyramidal structures. The base area of a pyramid-shaped refractive optical element can be any polygon, in particular a triangle or a square. All of the forms mentioned can be designed as recesses or surveys.
In expedient designs, the embossing elements have depressions which are filled with a transparent or translucent material, in particular a transparent or translucent lacquer. The transparent or translucent material can, but does not have to have the same refractive index as the transparent or translucent region of the carrier substrate. The depressions are preferably filled using printing technology, in particular in screen printing or flexographic printing, a lacquer curing at elevated temperature or under UV radiation being used with advantage.
With regard to the shape, size, properties and production of the local defects, the statements made in connection with the first aspect of the invention apply. In particular, the local defects are each advantageously formed by a bulge, a bulge, a recess, or a modification of the surface structure of the basic shape of the embossed elements. The local defects in the embossing substructures within the embossing elements, which are generated in particular simultaneously with the embossing elements, were particularly advantageous.
The statements made in connection with the first aspect of the invention also apply to the shape, size, properties and manufacture of the embossed elements and the possibility of providing a plurality of optically variable information in the security element.

The invention also includes a data carrier with a security element of the type described. The data carrier can in particular be a document of value, such as a banknote, in particular a paper banknote, a polymer banknote or a composite film banknote, but also an identification card, such as a credit card Trade a bank card, a cash payment card, an authorization card, an identity card or a passport personalization page. In an advantageous variant of the invention, the security element can be arranged, in particular, in or above a window area or a continuous opening of the data carrier.

The embossing elements can not only form depressions, but can also be formed by elevations from the
Die Prägetiefe, bzw. im Fall von Erhebungen die Prägehöhe, liegt typischerweise zwischen 3 µm und 200 µm.Depending on the application, the base area of the embossed elements typically has a smallest dimension of 2 µm to 300 µm, in some applications also up to 2000 µm. If the embossing layer is a foil or foil-based, the smallest dimension is preferably between 5 µm and 50 µm, especially between 10 µm and 30 µm. The embossing depth, or in the case of surveys the embossing height, is typically between 3 µm and 200 µm.
In a
In the case of all the
The local defects usually have a diameter or a smallest dimension of 10 µm or more. The diameter or the smallest dimension is typically 5 μm to 100 μm, it being understood that the size of the defects is generally matched to the size of the embossing elements. Each of the local defects preferably occupies less than 33% or even less than 10% of the surface of the basic shape of the embossing elements.

By using different side surfaces for different information, different optically variable information can be visible in such a grid from each of the four cardinal points. In general, up to n different optically variable information items, each consisting of one, can be encoded in a pyramid with an n-square base different spatial directions become visible. The defect-free pyramids form the background against which the defective pyramids appear with contrast to form the optically variable information.
In a further embodiment, not shown here, the local defects present as
Due to the arrangement of the

The subset of the

In addition, by integrating the
In a further aspect of the invention, the security element is set up for verification using a self-illuminating display, such as the display of a smartphone or a computer monitor.
If the
