L'invention concerne un dispositif d'assistance à l'ouverture et à la fermeture d'un ouvrant, notamment à frappe, sur châssis. L'invention est plus particulièrement, mais non exclusivement, destinée à un ouvrant, telle une fenêtre à battant, comprenant un ou plusieurs vantaux, dont l'axe de pivotement est vertical, lesdits vantaux étant montés sur un dormant constitué de profilés, notamment en alliage d'aluminium et comportant des moyens d'étanchéité entre les vantaux et le dormant. Selon un exemple de réalisation de l'art antérieur, une telle fenêtre comporte des moyens de verrouillage, par exemple une crémone, permettant de verrouiller un vantail en position fermée dans le dormant, lesquels moyens de verrouillage sont commandés par une poignée rotative. La fermeture d'un vantail implique d'appliquer celui-ci contre le dormant, afin de comprimer les moyens d'étanchéité, et de maintenir ledit vantail dans cette position pendant la manoeuvre des moyens de verrouillage. Cette manoeuvre nécessite une coordination des mouvements et une certaine force afin de maintenir le vantail contre le dormant et manoeuvrer la poignée de commande de la crémone. De même, la manoeuvre d'ouverture du vantail nécessite, lors du déverrouillage, de vaincre l'effort de frottement naturellement induit au niveau des moyens de verrouillage lors de leur libération.
