Definitions

  • the invention concerns a box made as a flat blank which is adapted so it can be folded into a box-like shape.
  • Boxes provided as foldable blanks, especially made of cardboard, are well-known, especially as disposable containers for fast-food or as packing items.
  • FIG. 2013/0075461 A1 An example a foldable box is disclosed in US 2013/0075461 A1 .
  • This box is particularly designed as a pet carrier provided with vents and a handle.
  • the prior art box is intended to relieve the space-consuming properties of known pet carrier boxes with fixed shape.
  • This box is provided with foldable sides along opposing edges of a rectangular bottom. Separate sides are attached along the remaining opposing sides for forming a four-sided box. Handle parts are provided at the upper ends of the sides. The corners between the sides of the box are closed by overlapping elliptic flaps which are secured by special locking means.
  • the box according to the invention suggests a box with a bottom, a top and at least one side, provided as at least one substantially flat blank with markings or embossings, including linear markings or embossings indicating lines along which parts of the blank are to be folded to form the box, wherein the top is connected to the at least one side by a folding line allowing the top to pivot relative to the at least one side and where the top along its free side edge(s) is provided with projecting part(s) extending along said side edge(s) of the top and projecting at right angles from the plane of the top, the projecting part(s) arranged so as to engage and retain the at least one side of the box in the folded and closed condition of the box and wherein the box is adapted so as to be folded and unfolded several times.
  • a reusable, all-purpose box which is easy to clean from dirt and residue from the contents. This is done by unfolding the box before cleaning.
  • the unfolded blank is simply introduced into the dishwasher, as would any other suitable kitchen utensil.
  • the at least one side(s) is/are permanently attached to the bottom why no separate actions are needed for assembling the box.
  • no separate elements are included in the box structure, making sure that all necessary parts for assembling the box are kept together.
  • the sides can be raised at the periphery of the bottom, wherein the sides are interconnected by intermediate pieces of the blank, the intermediate pieces capable of being folded such that in the folded condition tight corners of the box are formed.
  • the corners between the sides are thereby closed by simple means.
  • the intermediate pieces are capable of being folded inwardly toward the interior of the box.
  • the box is made of a material that can be cleaned several times in water, possibly warm water with a cleaning agent.
  • the box is thereby suited as reusable food container, for example a lunch box, which in the unfolded condition does not take up much space in a dish washer.
  • the box can be made of thermoplastic material, e.g. polypropylene (PP), which is durable and easily kept clean and can withstand repeated folding and unfolding actions.
  • PP polypropylene
  • the preferred type of PP has a sort of memory, such that the material will remember, i.e. have a tendency to fold and un-fold along previously used or marked folding lines.
  • the material thickness will be between 1 and 2 mm, but in folding lines acting as hinges a reduce material thickness, i.e 0,3 - 0,5 mm preferred approx. 0,35 mm is used.
  • the box is made of cardboard or cardboard coated with a plastic material. This provides a cheap embodiment of the invention, in particular when reuse is only required a few times.
  • the box has substantially rectangular configuration in the folded condition, with two pairs of opposing sides standing up from the bottom, and where the top is hingedly connected to one side of the box.
  • This configuration provides a shape of the box that enables easy stacking of the box, and the top is always at hand when integrated as a part of the blank.
  • the top along its free side edges is provided with projecting part(s) extending along at least three side edges of the top and projecting at right angles from the plane of the top, the projecting part(s) arranged so as to engage and retain the outer side of the top of sides of the box in the folded and closed condition of the box.
  • the top can hereby not only act as lid, but also as a retainer as a slight elasticity of the sides outwards will keep the projecting part engaged with the side, and thereby retain the box in its folded and functional condition.
  • top is provided with a flap extending outwards from the side of the top opposite the hinge connection of the top, and wherein the side of the box opposite the side hingedly connected to the top is provided with a projection at the outer side in the folded condition, the flap and the projection are adapted to each other so as to engage and to provide a temporary closure of the box in the folded condition.
  • the interacting parts in the form of flap and projection which can have any suitable shape, thereby not only keep the box closed but also contribute to keeping the box in the folded condition.
  • the projection may also be in shape of a cut, partly surrounding a part of the side, such that the part surrounded by the cut may be bend out of the sides' plane and act as projection.
  • the box is provided with a member for keeping the sides of the box upright from the bottom in the folded condition, the member comprising a band adapted to fit around the box outside and along the sides between the top and the bottom.
  • the band can be a rubber band or a non-resilient band with a size fitting the circumference of the box.
  • FIGs. 1 and 2 An embodiment of the invention is shown on Figs. 1 and 2 , indicating a blank 1 for a foldable box.
  • the blank comprises a bottom 2 with two long sides 3, 4 and two short sides 5.
  • a top 6 for the box is provided adjacent to one long side 4.
  • Corner connections 7 are provided as contiguous parts between the sides 3, 4, 5.
  • the blank 1 is provided with embossed or moulded grooves 12 at the joints between main components 2 - 7 of the box for facilitating folding of the blank 1 into a box.
  • the blank 1 can be made of various materials according to the application for the box. Examples of materials are thermoplastic materials, e.g. propylene, cardboard, fibreboard, metal, leather or sheets of fibrous materials, eg. natural fibres, e.g. bamboo or wood.
  • a blank of cardboard can be coated with plastic at one or both sides. The materials are chosen and processed so as to provide durable joints between the components 2 - 7 so that the blank 1 can be folded into a box and unfolded again several times, up to an infinite number of times if so required and depending on the selected material.
  • the blank 1 can be made by any suitable forming process, e.g. injection moulding, rolling, embossing or pressing, or a combination thereof.
  • the top 6 is furthermore provided with a striplike continuous edge part 8 along the three free sides of the top 6 extending at right angles from the plane of the top 6.
  • the part 8 extends to the side of the top 6 facing the interior of the folded box.
  • Strip parts 9 that are similar in shape extend in parallel with the edge part 8. The parts 8, 9 are provided for engaging free edges of the sides 3, 5 when the box is closed.
  • edge part 8 and the strip part 9 may not be provided.
  • the strip part and edge part 8 does not assist in stabilizing the box in its closed configuration.
  • This embodiment is provided with optional closing means in the form of a button 10 on the side 3, see Fig. 2 , and a member 11 for engaging the button 10.
  • Fig. 3 appears an enlarged detail of a corner connection 7.
  • the grooves 12 enable the connection 12 to be folded double while at the same time keeping the corners tight.
  • Fig. 4 which shows the blank 1 while being folded into a box. In this case inward folding of the corner connections 7 is preferred, but it is of course possible to configure the box such that the corner connections 7 fold outwardly.
  • the box When folded to the functional position in Fig. 5 , the box can be secured in this state by a band 13 which can be a rubber band, a non-resilient band or an almost non-resilient band.
  • the sides 3, 4, 5 are hereby kept upright, and the top 6 can close the box.
  • a great advantage of the box provided by the inventive blank is that the box 1 can readily be unfolded again for easy cleaning and storage. This can be done many times without affecting its function as a temperary storage container, for example as a lunch box which requires regular cleaning.
  • the box may have a separate lid which is not attached to one of the sides.
  • the box may have other basic shape than the quadrangular, e.g. with a hexagonal, semicircular or other geometric shape of the bottom and top.
