Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to a device comprising folding means for forming at least one longitudinal fold in a web of flexible film, and to the corresponding folding method.
- A device of this type may typically be incorporated in a packaging machine which also comprises, downstream of the device, means for shaping the longitudinally folded film into a tubular form, and then sealing and cutting it transversely, so as to produce tubular packages sealed in the form of bags, after the products for packaging have been introduced into them. The present invention therefore relates solely to the folding of open films, that is to say films that are not sealed to form tubes, by joining their side edges, until they have been folded.
- The longitudinal folds are generally located at the edges of the package so as to stiffen it, while leaving the main faces free for the printing of advertising messages, decorations, and the like. On the other hand, these folds may be located in any portion of the package if required.
- With known folding devices, however, the formation of longitudinal folds has proved to be difficult, particularly in the case of films of fragile materials such as paper materials, which may be broken, torn, or damaged in similar ways.
- The object of the present invention is therefore to provide a folding method which is an improvement on the prior art methods, and which is, in particular, free of the aforementioned drawbacks.
- According to the invention, this object is achieved by means of a method comprising:
- a folding step for forming at least one longitudinal fold in a web of flexible film, using folding means comprising, for forming each fold, at least a first and a second idle wheel, which are arranged offset and substantially parallel to each other on opposite sides of the film and have axes which are substantially orthogonal to the general plane of the film or the plane in which the film lies, these axes being separated by a distance smaller than the diameter of at least one of said wheels, and
- a subsequent step of shaping the folded film into a tubular form, that to say a sealed form.
- According to the invention, the parts of the device intended to form the folds are therefore idle wheels, which, because of their intrinsic characteristics and their arrangement, are able to interact with the film as gently as possible, without subjecting it to undue stress.
- Advantageously, according to the invention it is also possible to provide, upstream of the folding wheels, a forming shoulder which relieves in advance any stresses that may have accumulated previously in the regions of the film to be folded.
- Also advantageously, the first and second wheels are provided with means for adjusting the distance separating the respective axes, in such a way that the device of the invention can form folds of different sizes according to the specific requirements of the user.
- Preferably, the web of flexible film is made of paper material.
- Other advantages and characteristics of the present invention will become clear from the following detailed description, which is given by way of non-limiting example with reference to the attached drawings, in which:
-
Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a device for the execution of a method comprising a folding step according to the invention, -
Figure 2 is a front elevation view of the device ofFigure 1 , -
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along the line III-III ofFigure 2 , -
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along the line IV-IV ofFigure 2 , in which, for greater clarity, the folded film is also shown spaced apart from the device, -
Figures 5a - 5d show schematically respective sealing means provided in the device according to the preceding figures, -
Figure 6 is a schematic perspective view of a serially operating device for the execution of the folding step of a method according to the invention, -
Figure 7 is a front elevation view of the device ofFigure 6 , and -
Figure 8 is a side elevation view of the device ofFigure 6 . - A device for forming longitudinal folds in a web of
flexible film 10, particularly one made of paper material, comprises guide rollers 12 (Figures 1 - 4 ) which direct the film towards a forming shoulder. As is apparent from the figures, thefilm 10 to be folded has lateral edges - that is to say, edges parallel to the direction of advance - which are not engaged with one another. The forming shoulder is shaped as aplate 14 placed on a substantially vertical plane and having an upper edge whosecentral part 16 is substantially horizontal and in contact with thefilm 10 and whoseside parts 18 are inclined and spaced apart from thefilm 10. - Downstream of the plate, the device comprises folding means for forming a respective
longitudinal fold 20 in each lateral part of thefilm 10. - The folding means comprise, for forming each
fold 20, two pairs, each formed by a first 22a and a second 22b idle wheel, and arranged in sequence with respect to a descending portion of the path of thefilm 10. Thewheels film 10, and haveaxes 24 which are substantially orthogonal to the general plane of thefilm 10 in the contact area. Theaxes 24 are separated by a distance d which is smaller than the diameters of thewheels axes 24 must be less than the larger of these diameters. In all cases, an area of overlap of theoffset wheels film 10. Thewheels respective axes 24. Thewheels 22a are mounted on asupport plate 26. The support of thewheels 22b is not shown, for the sake of clarity in the drawing. - Additionally, a pair of
opposing rollers 28 is placed downstream of the folding means, these rollers being placed facing each other on opposite sides of thefilm 10 and having axes parallel to the general plane of thefilm 10 in the contact area. - In operation, the
film 10 advances in the direction indicated by thearrow 30, and its passage over theshoulder 14 relieves the stresses in its lateral regions, which are to be subjected to the action of thefolding wheels film 10 is kept substantially unchanged; in other words, the film is not subjected to rotation about its median longitudinal axis. - The
wheels Fig. 4 in particular) cause afold 20, having the profile of an S with two bends, to be formed in each lateral region of thefilm 10. Thefolds 20 are then made permanent by passing through the pair ofopposing rollers 28. - If one face of the
film 10 has been pre-coated with adhesive material in the folding areas, the passage through therollers 28 causes the permanent adhesion of the two branches of one of the two bends of eachfold 20. Assuming that the adhesive material has been placed on the face of thefilm 10 facing downwards inFigure 4 , the adhering bends are those in the upper position of eachfold 20. - However, if no area of the
film 10 has been pre-coated with adhesive material, thefolds 20 are made permanent, in a known way, by heat sealing means placed farther downstream of therollers 28. -
Figures 5a - 5d show various embodiments of the sealing means, which may therefore respectively include, for eachfold 20, a single slidingshoe 32, a pair of slidingshoes 34 placed on opposite sides of eachfold 20, a pair ofwheels 36 placed on opposite sides of eachfold 20, or a pair ofbelts 38 placed on opposite sides of eachfold 20. - The folded
film 10 is then shaped, in a known way which is not illustrated in the figures, into a tubular form and is filled with the product to be packaged, and is also sealed and cut transversely, so as to produce tubular packages sealed in the form of bags. These operations can be carried out by any packaging machine, for example a horizontal or vertical machine, which incorporates the folding device described above. Alternatively, the folded film can be rewound on to a reel, and can subsequently be shaped and cut into three-dimensional packages by a packaging machine, this operation taking place at a later time. - Typically, the
folds 20 are made to be present at the edges of the individual cut packages so as to form reinforcing elements, although in principle they may be located at any position. -
Figures 6 to 8 show another embodiment of a device for performing the folding step of the method of the invention, in which numbers identical to those used in the preceding figures denote identical or equivalent parts. - In this case, the structure illustrated previously is essentially duplicated to provide two folding stations arranged in series, one after the other, with the provision of further
intermediate guide rollers 40 and afinal guide roller 42. - Each station can be used to form two
longitudinal folds 20, so that the final sheet has fourfolds 20. Clearly, the number and sizes of thefolds 20 formed in each station can be chosen as desired, provided that they are compatible with the geometrical constraints of the package to be formed, the distance between theaxes 24 of thewheels - Naturally, the principle of the invention remaining the same, the details of construction and the forms of embodiment may be varied widely with respect to those described, which have been given purely by way of example, without thereby departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the attached claims. For example, a desired number of pairs of wheels can be provided for forming each fold, and the folding process can be carried out on a film which is positioned horizontally or inclined with respect to the vertical.
