Description
- The present invention relates to motorcycles.
- Prior art document
US 2007/0774698 A1 discloses a motorcycle with a lubrication system of an engine, wherein a cylinder head has a head side oil passage disposed at one end thereof along the axis of a crankshaft. A lower case of a crankcase is provided with a supply source side oil passage communicating with an oil supply source and extending parallel to the axis of the crankshaft and a branched oil passage guiding oil to the head side oil passage which branches from the supply source side oil passage and extends upwardly. An upper case side oil passage extending vertically to communicate with a head side oil passage is provided at one end of an upper case along the axis of the crankshaft. A communication passage communicating the upper end of a branched oil passage is provided in a lower case in a position inwardly from the upper case side oil passage along the axis of the crankshaft. The casings are provided with reinforcement ribs. - Conventionally, in an internal combustion engine for motorcycles and the like, oil is circulated through oil passages formed in a crankcase for accommodating a crankshaft as well as in a cylinder body and a cylinder head, which are disposed above the crankcase. In the crankcase, a drive shaft to which the torque of the crankshaft is transmitted is disposed. The drive shaft needs to be lubricated and cooled by circulating the oil. Patent Literatures 1 a nd 2 disclose a technique for supplying oil from the oil passage formed in the crankcase to the drive shaft.
- However, a crankcase that comprises an upper crankcase and a lower crankcase, as described in
JP 2008-151275 A JP 2010-007847 A - The present invention has been accomplished in view of the foregoing and other problems, and it is an object of the invention to provide a motorcycle that prevents an increase in the number of parts of its internal combustion engine and at the same time achieves high-speed revolution and high power.
- According to the present invention said object is solved by a motorcycle having the features of
independent claim 1. Preferred embodiments are laid down in the dependent claims. - Accordingly, it is provided a motorcycle comprising: a body frame; an internal combustion engine, the internal combustion engine comprising a crankshaft, a drive shaft to which torque of the crankshaft is transmitted, an upper crankcase disposed above the crankshaft and the drive shaft, a lower crankcase disposed below the crankshaft and the drive shaft and joined to the upper crankcase, and a cylinder body disposed above the upper crankcase and having a plurality of cylinders arranged transversely, wherein: at least one of the upper crankcase and the lower crankcase has a boss portion, having a hole for receiving a rod-shaped fastener extending transversely, and being secured to the body frame by the fastener; and the at least one of the upper crankcase and the lower crankcase has an oil passage for flowing oil supplied to the drive shaft, the oil passage integrally formed with the upper crankcase and/or the lower crankcase and extending in a transverse direction.
- In the motorcycle according to the present teaching, the oil passage through which the oil to be supplied to the drive shaft flows is integrally formed with the upper crankcase or the lower crankcase, which is positioned below the cylinder body. Thus, the oil passage does not need to be formed as an independent member. Therefore, cost reduction and weight reduction are achieved because of the reduction of the parts count. Moreover, because the cylinder body has the plurality of cylinders arranged transversely, high revolution and high power can be achieved.
- In another preferred embodiment, the upper crankcase having the oil passage or the lower crankcase having the oil passage includes a rib having the boss portion and protruding outward from an outer wall of the upper crankcase or from an outer wall of the lower crankcase.
- Provision of the rib in this way can prevent twist of the boss portion.
- In another preferred embodiment, the oil passage is disposed so that a portion of the oil passage and a portion of the rib overlap each other, as viewed from the rear of the motorcycle.
- This can prevent the vertical size of the internal combustion engine from increasing.
- In another preferred embodiment, the motorcycle further comprises a head pipe. The body frame has a left main frame extending rearward and obliquely downward from the head pipe, and a right main frame extending rearward and obliquely downward from the head pipe and being positioned to the right of the left main frame. At least one of the upper crankcase and the lower crankcase has a left boss portion disposed between the left main frame and the right main frame and secured to the left main frame by the fastener, and a right boss portion disposed between the left main frame and the right main frame and secured to the right main frame by the fastener. At least a portion of the oil passage is positioned between the left boss portion and the right boss portion, as viewed from the rear of the motorcycle.
- This increases the strength of the rib on which the left boss portion is formed and the rib on which the right boss portion is formed.
- In another preferred embodiment, the oil passage includes a first outer wall forming a portion of an outer surface of the upper crankcase or a portion of an outer surface of the lower crankcase.
- Thus, the first outer wall of the oil passage and a portion of the outer surface of the upper crankcase or of the lower crankcase are formed of the same component. Therefore, the volumetric space within the upper crankcase or the lower crankcase is greater than in the case that these components are formed of different components. This offers more freedom in component layout.
- In another preferred embodiment, the upper crankcase and the lower crankcase includes a crank chamber accommodating the crankshaft, and a drive chamber accommodating the drive shaft, and the oil passage includes a second outer wall being positioned inward of the upper crankcase or the lower crankcase and forming a portion of the drive chamber.
- Thus, the second outer wall of the oil passage and a portion of the drive chamber are formed of the same component. Therefore, the volumetric space within the upper crankcase or the lower crankcase is greater than in the case that these components are formed of different components. This offers more freedom in component layout.
- In another preferred embodiment, the transverse length of the drive chamber is shorter than the transverse length of the crank chamber; and the second outer wall of the oil passage forms a portion of the drive chamber of the lower crankcase.
- Thereby, the oil passage can be made more compact in size.
- In another preferred embodiment, the drive chamber has a front wall, a left wall extending rearward from the front wall, a right wall extending rearward from the front wall, and a rear wall connecting the left wall and the right wall to each other; the rear wall has the rib extending rearward and in a vertical direction from the rear wall and including the boss portion; and the oil passage intersects the rib.
- Since the rib including the boss portion intersects the oil passage, the strength of the rib is enhanced. As a result, the boss portion has high rigidity.
- In another preferred embodiment, the oil passage is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, the distance between the center of the boss portion and the center of the oil passage is shorter than the distance between the center of the boss portion and the center of the drive shaft.
- Because the oil passage is disposed compactly within a limited space in the upper crankcase or the lower crankcase in this way, the internal combustion engine is prevented from increasing in size.
- In another preferred embodiment, the oil passage is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, the center of the oil passage is positioned more frontward than the center of the boss portion and more rearward than the center of the drive shaft.
- Because the oil passage is disposed compactly within a limited space in the upper crankcase or the lower crankcase in this way, the internal combustion engine is prevented from increasing in size.
- In another preferred embodiment, the motorcycle further comprises a first gear provided on the drive shaft, and the oil passage is disposed so as to overlap at least one of the drive shaft and the first gear, as viewed in plan of the motorcycle.
- This prevents the internal combustion engine from increasing in size and also offers more freedom in layout of the components except for the oil passage. Moreover, because it is unnecessary to provide an oil passage formed by a separate component between the crankshaft and the drive shaft, the distance between the crankshaft and the drive shaft can be shortened.
- In another preferred embodiment, a main shaft disposed more rearward than the crankshaft and more frontward than the drive shaft; and a second gear provided on the main shaft and meshing with the first gear, and wherein the oil passage does not overlap the first gear or the second gear, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle.
- This allows the oil passage to be disposed desirably irrespective of the shapes of the first gear and the second gear, and therefore offers more freedom in layout of the oil passage.
- In another preferred embodiment, the oil passage is disposed so that a portion of the oil passage and a portion of the boss portion overlap each other, as viewed in plan of the motorcycle.
- This prevents the internal combustion engine from increasing in size.
- In another preferred embodiment, the upper crankcase and the lower crankcase include a drive shaft supporting surface for supporting the drive shaft, the drive shaft supporting surface includes an oil groove through which oil flows, and the at least one of the upper crankcase and the lower crankcase includes a communication passage integrally formed with the upper crankcase and/or the lower crankcase and configured to allow communication between the oil passage and the oil groove.
- Because the oil groove can be formed in the drive shaft supporting surface, the amount of oil supplied can be adjusted easily by providing a narrower portion for the oil groove.
- In another preferred embodiment, the oil passage is integrally formed with the lower crankcase and is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, the center of the oil passage is positioned higher than the center of the boss portion and lower than the center of the drive shaft.
- Because the boss portion is positioned lower than the drive shaft and the oil passage, the stability of the lower crankcase on the body frame is improved.
- As described above, the present teaching makes it possible to provide a motorcycle that prevents an increase in the number of parts of its internal combustion engine and at the same time achieves high-speed revolution and high power.

Fig. 26 is a perspective view of the lower crankcase according to one embodiment. - Hereinbelow, preferred embodiments will be described. As illustrated in
Fig. 1 , amotorcycle 1 according to the present preferred embodiment is an on-road type motorcycle 1. It should be noted, however, that the motorcycle according to the present teaching is not limited to the on-road type motorcycle 1. The motorcycle according to the present teaching may be any other type of motorcycle, such as a moped type motorcycle, an off-road type motorcycle, or a scooter type motorcycle. - In the following description, the terms "front," "rear," "left," "right," "up," and "down" respectively refer to front, rear, left, right, up, and down as defined based on the perspective of the rider seated on the seat of the
motorcycle 1, unless specifically indicated otherwise. The terms "above/up" and "below/down" respectively mean the relative vertical positions above/up and below/down as used when themotorcycle 1 is stationary on a horizontal plane. Reference characters F, Re, L, R, Up, and Dn in the drawings indicate front, rear, left, right, up, and down, respectively. - As illustrated in
Fig. 1 , themotorcycle 1 has ahead pipe 5 and abody frame 20 secured to thehead pipe 5. A steering shaft (not shown) is supported on thehead pipe 5, and a handlebar 7 is provided on an upper portion of the steering shaft. Afront fork 9 is provided on a lower portion of the steering shaft. Afront wheel 10 is supported rotatably at the lower end of thefront fork 9. Afuel tank 3 is disposed behind thehead pipe 5, and aseat 15 is disposed at the rear of thefuel tank 3. Thefuel tank 3 and theseat 15 are supported by thebody frame 20. - The
body frame 20 has a leftmain frame 22 extending rearward and obliquely downward from thehead pipe 5, and a right main frame 32 (seeFig. 3 ) extending rearward and obliquely downward from thehead pipe 5 and being positioned to the right of the leftmain frame 22. Thebody frame 20 has a leftrear arm 24 disposed at the rear of the leftmain frame 22 and linked to thebody frame 20 via apivot shaft 30, and a right rear arm (not shown) disposed at the rear of the rightmain frame 32 and linked to thebody frame 20 via thepivot shaft 30. Arear wheel 12 is rotatably supported at arear end portion 24A of the leftrear arm 24 and a rear end portion of the right rear arm. - The
motorcycle 1 has aninternal combustion engine 40. Theinternal combustion engine 40 is disposed under the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32. Theinternal combustion engine 40 is supported non-swingably by the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32. More specifically, as illustrated inFig. 2 , each of the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32 has a first connectingportion 22A, a second connectingportion 22B positioned more rearward than the first connectingportion 22A, a third connecting portion 22C positioned more rearward than the second connectingportion 22B, and a fourth connectingportion 22D positioned lower than the third connecting portion 22C. At the first connectingportion 22A, each of the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32 is linked to a connectingportion 80A (seeFig. 13 ) of a later-describedcylinder head 80. At the second connectingportion 22B, each of the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32 is linked to a connectingportion 80B (seeFig. 18 ) of thecylinder head 80. At the third connecting portion 22C, each of the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32 is linked to a boss portion 120 (seeFig. 3 ) of anupper crankcase 50. At the fourth connectingportion 22D, the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32 are linked to a left boss portion 130 (seeFig. 4 ) and a right boss portion 134 (seeFig. 4 ) of a later-describedlower crankcase 60. - As illustrated in
Fig. 5 , theinternal combustion engine 40 is a multi-cylinder engine. Theinternal combustion engine 40 has acrankshaft 42 extending in a transverse direction, abalancer shaft 38 positioned more frontward than thecrankshaft 42, amain shaft 108 positioned more rearward than thecrankshaft 42, adrive shaft 118 positioned more rearward than themain shaft 108, a clutch 100 to which torque of thecrankshaft 42 is transmitted, atransmission 110, and a crankcase 48 (seeFig. 1 ) for accommodating these components. Thecrankcase 48 comprises theupper crankcase 50 and thelower crankcase 60. As illustrated inFig. 6 , theupper crankcase 50 is disposed above thecrankshaft 42, thebalancer shaft 38, and thedrive shaft 118. Thelower crankcase 60 is disposed below thecrankshaft 42, thebalancer shaft 38, and thedrive shaft 118, and is joined to theupper crankcase 50. Theaxial center 42C of thecrankshaft 42, theaxial center 38C of thebalancer shaft 38, and theaxial center 118C of thedrive shaft 118 are disposed on the same linear line W. Themain shaft 108 is disposed higher than thebalancer shaft 38, thecrankshaft 42, and thedrive shaft 118. An oil pan 18 (seeFig. 1 ) for recovering the oil having been circulated through the inside of theinternal combustion engine 40 is disposed below thelower crankcase 60. Thelower crankcase 60 and theoil pan 18 are joined to each other. As illustrated inFig. 5 , thecrankshaft 42 extends in a transverse direction (in a vehicle width direction). Asprocket 42S is formed at a right end portion of thecrankshaft 42. Acrank gear 42G is fixed to a portion of thecrankshaft 42 that is more leftward than thesprocket 42S. - A
gear 38G is fixed to a right end portion of thebalancer shaft 38. Thegear 38G meshes with acrank gear 42G that is fixed to thecrankshaft 42. Thus, thebalancer shaft 38 is linked to thecrankshaft 42. Thebalancer shaft 38 is driven by thecrankshaft 42. - The clutch 100 has a
clutch housing 102 and aclutch boss 104. Theclutch housing 102 is linked to agear 106. Thegear 106 meshes with thecrank gear 42G, which is fixed to thecrankshaft 42. Thus, theclutch housing 102 of the clutch 100 is linked to thecrankshaft 42. Themain shaft 108 is fixed to theclutch boss 104. Themain shaft 108 is provided with a plurality ofgears 108G, and thedrive shaft 118 is provided with a plurality ofgears 118G. Thetransmission 110 has ashift drum 112 and ashift fork 114. Theshift fork 114 moves at least either one of thegears 108G or thegears 118G so as to change a combination of thegears 108G and thegears 118G that mesh with each other. Thereby, the transmission gear ratio is changed. Asprocket 116 is fitted to a left end portion of thedrive shaft 118. Thesprocket 116 and the rear wheel 12 (seeFig. 1 ) are linked to each other by achain 117. The torque of thecrankshaft 42 is transmitted to therear wheel 12 through thechain 117. The mechanism for transmitting mechanical power from thedrive shaft 118 to therear wheel 12 is not limited to thechain 117, but may be another type of mechanism, such as a transmission belt, a drive shaft, or a gear mechanism. - As illustrated in
Figs. 7 and8 , theupper crankcase 50 and thelower crankcase 60 together form acrank chamber 45 accommodating thecrankshaft 42, aclutch chamber 105 accommodating the clutch 100, atransmission chamber 115 accommodating thetransmission 110, and acam chain chamber 46 accommodating a later-describedcam chain 47. Thetransmission chamber 115 accommodates themain shaft 108 and thedrive shaft 118. Thecrank chamber 45 and theclutch chamber 105 are in communication with each other. Thecrank chamber 45 and theclutch chamber 105 are in communication with each other at the rear of athird cylinder 73. Theclutch chamber 105 is positioned to the right of thetransmission chamber 115. The left-to-right length H1 of thetransmission chamber 115 is shorter than the left-to-right length H2 of thecrank chamber 45. The term "left-to-right length" herein means the transverse length. The just-mentioned length H1 represents the length of the transversely longest portion of thetransmission chamber 115, and the just-mentioned length H2 represents the length of the transversely longest portion of thecrank chamber 45. - As illustrated in
Fig. 1 , theinternal combustion engine 40 has acylinder body 70, acylinder head 80, and acylinder head cover 95. Thecylinder body 70 extends frontward and obliquely upward from theupper crankcase 50. Thecylinder head 80 is disposed above thecylinder body 70 and joined to thecylinder body 70. Thecylinder head cover 95 is disposed above thecylinder head 80 and joined to an end portion of thecylinder head 80. In the present preferred embodiment, thecylinder body 70 and theupper crankcase 50 are integrally formed with each other. However, thecylinder body 70 and theupper crankcase 50 may be formed of separate parts. It is possible that a gasket may be disposed between thecylinder head 80 and thecylinder body 70. - As illustrated in
Fig. 9 , afirst cylinder 71, asecond cylinder 72, and athird cylinder 73 are formed inside thecylinder body 70. Theinternal combustion engine 40 is a three-cylinder engine. Thefirst cylinder 71, thesecond cylinder 72, and thethird cylinder 73 are disposed from left to right in that order. Thefirst cylinder 71, thesecond cylinder 72, and thethird cylinder 73 accommodatepistons 43. Each of thepistons 43 is connected to thecrankshaft 42 via a connectingrod 44. Theinternal combustion engine 40 of the present preferred embodiment is a three-cylinder engine having threecylinders 71 to 73. However, it may be a single-cylinder engine having one cylinder, or may be a multi-cylinder engine that has two cylinders, or four or more cylinders. It is preferable that theinternal combustion engine 40 be a multi-cylinder engine having two or more cylinders. - The
internal combustion engine 40 has threecombustion chambers 82 that are lined up in a vehicle width direction. Thecombustion chamber 82 is formed by the top face of thepiston 43, the inner circumferential wall of each of thecylinders 71 to 73, and a recessedportion 81 formed in thecylinder head 80. Thecombustion chamber 82 is provided with an ignition device 17 (seeFig. 10 ) for igniting the fuel in thecombustion chambers 82. As illustrated inFig. 10 , a plurality ofintake ports 83 and a plurality ofexhaust ports 85, which are in communication with thecombustion chambers 82, are formed in thecylinder head 80. Theinternal combustion engine 40 has anintake valve 84 for opening/closing the passage between thecombustion chamber 82 and theintake port 82, and anexhaust valve 86 for opening/closing the passage between thecombustion chamber 82 and theexhaust port 85. Theintake port 83 constitutes part of anintake passage 28. Theintake passage 28 is connected to an air cleaner, which is not shown in the drawings. Theexhaust port 85 constitutes part of anexhaust passage 29. Theexhaust passage 29 includes an exhaust pipe 13 (seeFig. 1 ), which is fitted to thecylinder head 80, and a silencer 14 (seeFig. 1 ). As illustrated inFig. 11 , in the present preferred embodiment, each one of thecombustion chambers 82 is provided with twointake ports 83 and twoexhaust ports 85. Theintake valve 84 is disposed for each of theintake ports 83, and theexhaust valve 86 is disposed for each of theexhaust ports 85. It is possible, however, that each one of thecombustion chambers 82 may be provided with oneintake port 82 and oneexhaust port 85. It is also possible that each one of thecombustion chambers 82 may be provided with different numbers ofintake ports 82 andexhaust ports 85 from each other. - As illustrated in
Fig. 10 , anintake camshaft 84A and anexhaust camshaft 86A extending in a transverse direction are disposed between thecylinder head 80 and thecylinder head cover 95. Theintake camshaft 84A hasintake cams 84B (seeFig. 12 ) each of which comes into contact with anupper end 84t of theintake valve 84 to operate theintake valve 84. The exhaust camshaft 85A hasexhaust cams 86B (seeFig. 12 ) each of which comes into contact with anupper end 86t of theexhaust valve 86 to operate theexhaust valve 86. As illustrated inFig. 12 , acam chain sprocket 84S is fitted to a right end portion of theintake camshaft 84A. Acam chain sprocket 86S is fitted to a right end portion of theexhaust camshaft 86A. As illustrated inFig. 13 , thecam chain 47 is looped over thecam chain sprockets sprocket 42S. Thecam chain 47 interlocks with thecrankshaft 42. - The
internal combustion engine 40 has thecam chain chamber 46 for accommodating thecam chain 47. Thecam chain chamber 46 of the present preferred embodiment is formed over the entirety of thecylinder head cover 95, thecylinder head 80, thecylinder body 70, theupper crankcase 50, and thelower crankcase 60. As illustrated inFig. 8 , thecam chain chamber 46 is positioned to the right of thecrank chamber 45. Theclutch chamber 105 is positioned behind thecam chain chamber 46. - As illustrated in
Fig. 14 , theupper crankcase 50 has a firstupper partition wall 51 and a secondupper partition wall 52. As illustrated inFig. 7 , the firstupper partition wall 51 separates thecam chain chamber 46 and thecrank chamber 45 from each other. The firstupper partition wall 52 has abottom face 52A and separates thecam chain chamber 46 and thecrank chamber 105 from each other. Afirst passage 53, formed of a groove extending in a front-to-rear direction, is formed in thebottom face 52A of the secondupper partition wall 52. Thefirst passage 53 allows communication between thecam chain chamber 46 and theclutch chamber 105. As illustrated inFig. 14 , asecond passage 54 allowing communication between thecam chain chamber 46 and thecrank chamber 45 is formed in the firstupper partition wall 51 of theupper crankcase 50. Thesecond passage 54 is positioned below thecylinder body 70. Thesecond passage 54 is positioned more frontward than theaxial center 42C of thecrankshaft 42. Thesecond passage 54 is positioned more rearward than theaxial center 38C of thebalancer shaft 38. - The
lower crankcase 60 has a firstlower partition wall 61 and a secondlower partition wall 62. As illustrated inFig. 8 , the firstlower partition wall 61 separates thecam chain chamber 46 and thecrank chamber 45 from each other. The firstlower partition wall 61 is in contact with the firstupper partition wall 51. The secondlower partition wall 62 separates thecam chain chamber 46 and theclutch chamber 105 from each other. The secondlower partition wall 62 has atop face 62A that is in contact with thebottom face 52A of the secondupper partition wall 52. Afirst passage 63, formed of a groove extending in a front-to-rear direction, is formed in thetop face 62A of the secondlower partition wall 62. Thefirst passage 63 allows communication between thecam chain chamber 46 and theclutch chamber 105. As illustrated inFig. 14 , anoil passage 64 that allows communication between thecam chain chamber 46 and thecrank chamber 45 is formed in the firstlower partition wall 61. The oil in thecam chain chamber 46 passes through theoil passage 64 and flows into thecrank chamber 45, and the oil is recovered in theoil pan 18 positioned below thecrank chamber 45. Thebottom face 52A of the secondupper partition wall 52 and thetop face 62A of the secondlower partition wall 62 may be indirectly in contact with each other, by interposing a gasket or the like between thebottom face 52A and thetop face 62A. - As illustrated in
Fig. 15 , thefirst passages cam chain chamber 46 and theclutch chamber 105. As illustrated inFig. 16 , the vertical length of thefirst passage 53 is longer than the vertical length of thefirst passage 63. The left-to-right length of thefirst passage 53 is substantially the same as the left-to-right length of thefirst passage 63. The vertical lengths of thefirst passages first passage 63 may be longer than that of thefirst passage 53. The left-to-right lengths of thefirst passages first passages first passages bottom face 52A of the secondupper partition wall 52 and thetop face 62A of the secondlower partition wall 62. However, it is sufficient that the first passage be formed in at least one of thebottom face 52A and thetop face 62A. The first passage may be such as to penetrate through at least one of the secondupper partition wall 52 and the secondlower partition wall 62 so as to allow communication between thecam chain chamber 46 and theclutch chamber 105. - As illustrated in
Fig. 7 , theupper crankcase 50 has a firstbolt insertion hole 55A and a secondbolt insertion hole 55B at the respective opposite sides of thefirst passage 53. The firstbolt insertion hole 55A is positioned more leftward than the secondbolt insertion hole 55B. The diameter of the firstbolt insertion hole 55A is greater than the diameter of the secondbolt insertion hole 55B. As illustrated inFig. 8 , thelower crankcase 60 has a firstbolt insertion hole 65A and a secondbolt insertion hole 65B at the respective opposite sides of thefirst passage 63. The firstbolt insertion hole 65A is positioned more leftward than the secondbolt insertion hole 65B. The diameter of the firstbolt insertion hole 65A is greater than the diameter of the secondbolt insertion hole 65B. As illustrated inFig. 16 , theupper crankcase 50 and thelower crankcase 60 are secured to each other bybolts - As illustrated in
Fig. 5 , thesprocket 42S, which is fitted to the right end portion of thecrankshaft 42, is accommodated in thecam chain chamber 46. Thecrank gear 42G of thecrankshaft 42 is accommodated in thecrank chamber 45. When thecrankshaft 42 is rotating, thecrank gear 42G and theoil passage 64 may overlap, as viewed from side. A gap P1 between thecrank gear 42G and the firstlower partition wall 61 is smaller than a gap P2 between thesprocket 42S and the firstlower partition wall 61. More specifically, the gaps P1 and P2 are the gap between the firstlower partition wall 61 and thecrank gear 42G that is at theaxial center 42C of thecrankshaft 42 and the gap between the firstlower partition wall 61 and thesprocket 42S that is at theaxial center 42C of thecrankshaft 42, respectively. - As illustrated in
Fig. 9 , theinternal combustion engine 40 has analternator 67. Thealternator 67 is fitted to a left end portion of thecrankshaft 42. As illustrated inFig. 6 , theupper crankcase 50 and thelower crankcase 60 together form analternator chamber 68 for accommodating thealternator 67. As illustrated inFig. 5 , thealternator chamber 68 is positioned to the left of thecrank chamber 45. Aplastic gear 66 for driving awater pump 16 is disposed in thealternator chamber 68. Agear 38H is fixed to a left end portion of thebalancer shaft 38. Thegear 38H meshes with theplastic gear 66. Therefore, thewater pump 16 interlocks with thebalancer shaft 38. As illustrated inFig. 6 , theupper crankcase 50 has a thirdupper partition wall 69A. As illustrated inFig. 7 , the thirdupper partition wall 69A separates thealternator chamber 68 and thecrank chamber 45 from each other. Thelower crankcase 60 has a thirdlower partition wall 69B. As illustrated inFig. 8 , the thirdlower partition wall 69B separates thealternator chamber 68 and thecrank chamber 45 from each other. As illustrated inFig. 6 , the thirdupper partition wall 69A has anoutlet 77E of a later-describedfirst communication port 77. Theoutlet 77E is disposed above theplastic gear 66. Theoutlet 77E is disposed more frontward than thecenter 66C of theplastic gear 66. Anoil passage 69P that allows communication between thealternator chamber 68 and thecrank chamber 45 is formed in the thirdlower partition wall 69B. The oil that has flowed from thecylinder body 70 through thefirst communication port 77 and theoutlet 77E into thealternator chamber 68 is supplied to theplastic gear 66. Thereafter, the oil flows through theoil passage 69P into thecrank chamber 45 and is recovered into theoil pan 18, which is positioned below thecrank chamber 45. As illustrated inFig. 17 , arib 69R extending from the thirdlower partition wall 69B is formed below thecrankshaft 42. As a result, without being affected by the rotation of thecrankshaft 42, the oil in thealternator chamber 68 flows in the direction indicated by the arrow X inFig. 17 in a desirable manner, and is recovered in theoil pan 18. - As illustrated in
Fig. 18 , theinternal combustion engine 40 has thecylinder body 70, thecylinder head 80 positioned above thecylinder body 70, and a firstcylindrical dowel pin 87 and a secondcylindrical dowel pin 88 for positioning thecylinder body 70 and thecylinder head 80. Thefirst dowel pin 87 may be a tapered pin. Thesecond dowel pin 88 may be a tapered pin. - As illustrated in
Fig. 19 , thecylinder body 70 has a mountingsurface 76 to be fitted to thecylinder head 80. Thecylinder body 70 has thefirst cylinder 71, thesecond cylinder 72, and thethird cylinder 73, which are lined up in a transverse direction. Thecam chain chamber 46 is disposed to the right of thethird cylinder 73, which is the rightmost one of the cylinders. Thecylinder body 70 has acoolant passage 74 that surrounds thecylinders 71 to 73 and through which coolant flows. Thecylinder body 70 has a plurality of bolt insertion holes 75 formed around thecoolant passage 74. Thecylinder body 70 has afirst communication port 77 and asecond communication port 78. Thecylinders 71 to 73, thecoolant passage 74, the bolt insertion holes 75, thefirst communication port 77, and thesecond communication port 78 are open in the mountingsurface 76. - In the mounting
surface 76 of thecylinder body 70, a linear line passing through theaxial center 71 C of thefirst cylinder 71, theaxial center 72C of thesecond cylinder 72, and theaxial center 73C of thethird cylinder 73 is defined as a first linear line L1, and a linear line passing through theaxial center 72C of thesecond cylinder 72 and being orthogonal to the first linear line L1 is defined as a second linear line L2. Note that the second linear line L2 should pass the midpoint between theaxial center 71C of thefirst cylinder 71, which is the leftmost one of the cylinders, and theaxial center 73C of thethird cylinder 73, which is the rightmost one of the cylinders. In the present preferred embodiment, the just-mentioned midpoint is in agreement with theaxial center 72C of thesecond cylinder 72. A region that is in front of the first linear line L1 and to the left of the second linear line L2 is defined as a front left region. A region that is behind the first linear line L1 and to the left of the second linear line L2 is defined as a rear left region. A region that is in front of the first linear line L1 and to the right of the second linear line L2 is defined as a front right region. A region that is behind the first linear line L1 and to the right of the second linear line L2 is defined as a rear right region. Then, thefirst communication port 77 is disposed in the front left region, and thesecond communication port 78 is disposed in the rear right region. - The
first communication port 77 and thesecond communication port 78 are formed at positions further away from the first linear line L1 than the bolt insertion holes 75, in terms of the front-to-rear positional relationship in thecylinder body 70. Thefirst communication port 77 is positioned more frontward than the bolt insertion holes 75. It is preferable that thefirst communication port 77 be disposed more leftward than theaxial center 71C of thefirst cylinder 71, which is the leftmost one of the cylinders. It is preferable that thefirst communication port 77 be disposed in front of thefirst cylinder 71, which is the leftmost one of the cylinders. Thesecond communication port 78 is positioned more rearward than the bolt insertion holes 75. It is preferable that thesecond communication port 78 be disposed more rightward than theaxial center 73C of thethird cylinder 73, which is the rightmost one of the cylinders. It is preferable that thesecond communication port 78 be disposed behind thethird cylinder 73, which is the rightmost one of the cylinders. In the mountingsurface 76 of thecylinder body 70, the diameter A1 of the first communication port 77 (the inner diameter A1 of a later-described firstmain communication port 77A) and the diameter B1 of the second communication port 78 (the inner diameter B1 of a later-described secondmain communication port 78A) are greater than the diameter C1 of the bolt insertion holes 75. In the mountingsurface 76 of thecylinder body 70, the diameter A1 of thefirst communication port 77 and the diameter B1 of thesecond communication port 78 are greater than the groove width of thecoolant passage 74. The just-mentioned groove width is, for example, the groove width D1 of a portion of thecoolant passage 74 that overlaps the first linear line L1 and/or the second linear line L2. As illustrated inFig. 20 , theupper end 77T of thefirst communication port 77 is disposed lower than theupper end 78T of thesecond communication port 78. In the present preferred embodiment, thefirst communication port 77 is disposed more leftward than theaxial center 71C of thefirst cylinder 71. However, because it is sufficient that thefirst communication port 77 be disposed in the above-described front left region, thefirst communication port 77 may be disposed, for example, between theaxial center 71C of thefirst cylinder 71 and theaxial center 72C of thesecond cylinder 72. Likewise, in the present preferred embodiment, thesecond communication port 78 is disposed more rightward than theaxial center 73C of thethird cylinder 73. However, because it is sufficient that thesecond communication port 78 be disposed in the above-described rear right region, thesecond communication port 78 may be disposed, for example, between theaxial center 73C of thethird cylinder 73 and theaxial center 72C of thesecond cylinder 72. In the case of a multi-cylinder engine having four or more cylinders, it is preferable that at least either one of the first communication port or the second communication port be disposed between cylinders. - As illustrated in
Fig. 21 , thefirst communication port 77 has a firstmain communication port 77A and a firstsub-communication port 77B, which has the inner diameter A2 greater than the inner diameter A1 of the firstmain communication port 77A. Thefirst dowel pin 87 is fitted into the firstsub-communication port 77B. The outer diameter A3 of thefirst dowel pin 87 is greater than the inner diameter A1 of the firstmain communication port 77A. The outer diameter A3 of thefirst dowel pin 87 is less than or equal to the inner diameter A2 of the firstsub-communication port 77B. It is preferable that theaxial center 77C of thefirst communication port 77 and theaxial center 87C of thefirst dowel pin 87 be in agreement with each other. It is preferable that the inner diameter A4 of thefirst dowel pin 87 be equal to the inner diameter A1 of the firstmain communication port 77A. - As illustrated in
Fig. 22 , thesecond communication port 78 has a secondmain communication port 78A and a secondsub-communication port 78B, which has the inner diameter B2 greater than the inner diameter B1 of the secondmain communication port 78A. Thesecond dowel pin 88 is fitted into the secondsub-communication port 78B. The outer diameter B3 of thesecond dowel pin 88 is greater than the inner diameter B1 of the secondmain communication port 78A. The outer diameter B3 of thesecond dowel pin 88 is less than or equal to the inner diameter B2 of the secondsub-communication port 78B. It is preferable that theaxial center 78C of thesecond communication port 78 and theaxial center 88C of thesecond dowel pin 88 be in agreement with each other. It is preferable that the inner diameter B4 of thesecond dowel pin 88 be equal to the inner diameter B1 of the secondmain communication port 78A. - As illustrated in
Fig. 19 , anoil supply port 79 is formed in thecylinder body 70. The oil in theoil pan 18 is supplied through theoil supply port 79 to thecylinder head 80. Theoil supply port 79 is positioned more rearward than thefirst communication port 77 and more frontward than thesecond communication port 78. Theoil supply port 79 is positioned more rearward than the first linear line L1. Theoil supply port 79 is positioned more rightward than thesecond communication port 78. - As illustrated in
Fig. 11 , thecylinder head 80 has a mountingsurface 92 to be fitted to thecylinder body 70, afirst passage 93, and asecond passage 94. Thefirst passage 93 and thesecond passage 94 are open in the mountingsurface 92. Thefirst passage 93 is in communication with thefirst communication port 77 of thecylinder body 70. Thesecond passage 94 is in communication with thesecond communication port 78 of thecylinder body 70. At least either oil or air flows through thefirst passage 93 and thesecond passage 94. In the present preferred embodiment, mainly oil flows through thefirst passage 93, and mainly air flows through thesecond passage 94. - The
cylinder head 80 has a plurality ofcoolant passages 90 that are in communication with thecoolant passage 74 of thecylinder body 70. Thecylinder head 80 has a plurality of bolt insertion holes 91 formed around thecoolant passages 90. Thecoolant passages 90 and the bolt insertion holes 91 are open in the mountingsurface 92. Thecylinder head 80 is secured to thecylinder body 70 by bolts (not shown) inserted into the plurality of bolt insertion holes 91. Thecam chain chamber 46 is disposed to the right of thesecond passage 94. Anoil supply port 89 is formed in thecylinder head 80. Theoil supply port 89 is in communication with theoil supply port 79 of thecylinder body 70. Theoil supply port 89 is positioned more rearward than thefirst passage 93 and more frontward than thesecond passage 94. Theoil supply port 89 is positioned more rearward than theintake port 83. Theoil supply port 89 is positioned to the right of thesecond communication port 94. - As illustrated in
Fig. 18 , thefirst dowel pin 87 is fitted into thefirst communication port 77 and thefirst passage 93. Thefirst communication port 77 and thefirst passage 93 are in communication with each other through thefirst dowel pin 87. Thesecond dowel pin 88 is fitted into thesecond communication port 78 and thesecond passage 94. Thesecond communication port 78 and thesecond passage 94 are in communication with each other through thesecond dowel pin 88. Thefirst dowel pin 87 disposed lower than thesecond dowel pin 88. The dowel pins for positioning thecylinder body 70 and thecylinder head 80 are thefirst dowel pin 87 and thesecond dowel pin 88 only. - The upper end of the
second communication port 78 is open in the mountingsurface 76 of thecylinder body 70, and the lower end of thesecond communication port 78 is open in thecrank chamber 45. Thesecond communication port 78 allows communication between thecrank chamber 45 and the interior of thecylinder head 80. The air in thecrank chamber 45 passes through thesecond communication port 78, thesecond dowel pin 88, and thesecond passage 94 and flows into thecylinder head 80, as indicated by the arrow Y inFig. 18 . - The oil reserved in the oil pan 18 (see
Fig. 1 ) is supplied to thecrankshaft 42, as indicated by the arrow Z1 inFig. 18 , by an oil pump, which is not shown in the drawings. A portion of the oil supplied to thecrankshaft 42 is supplied to thebalancer shaft 38, as indicated by the arrow Z2 inFig. 18 . Another portion of the oil supplied to thecrankshaft 42 is supplied to theupper crankcase 50, theoil supply port 79 of thecylinder body 70, and theoil supply port 89 of thecylinder head 80, as indicated by the arrow Z3 inFig. 18 . As indicated by the arrows Z4 and Z5 inFig. 18 , the oil supplied to theoil supply port 89 is then supplied to theintake camshaft 84A and theexhaust camshaft 86A through a cam cap (not shown) and anoil passage 95P. A portion of the oil supplied to theintake camshaft 84A and theexhaust camshaft 86A circulates in thecylinder body 70, and flows into thefirst passage 93, as indicated by the arrow Z6 inFig. 18 . The oil having flowed into thefirst passage 93 flows through thefirst dowel pin 87 and thefirst communication port 77 and then flows into the alternator chamber 68 (seeFig. 6 ), as indicated by the arrow Z7 inFig. 18 , and the oil is recovered in theoil pan 18. Another portion of the oil supplied to theintake camshaft 84A and theexhaust camshaft 86A flows into the cam chain chamber 46 (seeFig. 13 ). The oil in thecam chain chamber 46 passes through theoil passage 64 and flows into thecrank chamber 45, and the oil is recovered in theoil pan 18 positioned below thecrank chamber 45. - In the present preferred embodiment, the
upper crankcase 50 and thecylinder body 70 are integrally formed with each other. However, if the upper crankcase and thecylinder body 70 are separate parts, theinternal combustion engine 40 may have two cylindrical dowel pins between theupper crankcase 50 and thecylinder body 70, for positioning theupper crankcase 50 and thecylinder body 70. One of the dowel pins is fitted into thefirst communication port 77, and other one of the dowel pins is fitted into thesecond communication port 78. - As illustrated in
Fig. 23 , theupper crankcase 50 has aboss portion 120 extending transversely. Theboss portion 120 has ahole 122 extending in a transverse direction. As illustrated inFig. 3 , theboss portion 120 is disposed between the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32. A rod-shapedfastener 140 extending in a transverse direction is inserted through a firstleft insertion hole 23A formed in the leftmain frame 22, a firstright insertion hole 33A formed in the rightmain frame 32, and thehole 122 of theboss portion 120. By thefastener 140, theboss portion 120 of theupper crankcase 50 is secured to the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32. As illustrated inFig. 14 , theboss 120 is disposed more rearward than theclutch chamber 105. - As illustrated in
Fig. 24 , thelower crankcase 60 has aleft boss portion 130 extending transversely direction and aright boss portion 134 extending transversely. Theleft boss portion 130 has ahole 132 extending in a transverse direction. Theright boss portion 134 has ahole 136 extending in a transverse direction. As illustrated inFig. 4 , theleft boss portion 130 is disposed between the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32. Theright boss portion 134 is disposed between the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32 and to the right of theleft boss portion 130. A rod-shapedfastener 150 extending transversely is inserted through a secondleft insertion hole 23B formed in the leftmain frame 22, a secondright insertion hole 33B formed in the rightmain frame 32, and thehole 132 of theleft boss portion 130, and thehole 136 of theright boss portion 134. By thefastener 150, theleft boss portion 130 of thelower crankcase 60 is secured to the leftmain frame 22, and theright boss portion 134 is secured to the rightmain frame 32. In the present preferred embodiment, theupper crankcase 50 has theboss portion 120, and thelower crankcase 60 has theleft boss portion 130 and theright boss portion 134. However, it is sufficient that at least one of theupper crankcase 50 and thelower crankcase 60 should have a boss portion. Moreover, theupper crankcase 50 may have the right and left boss portions, as with thelower crankcase 60, and thelower crankcase 60 may have only one boss portion, as with theupper crankcase 50. - As illustrated in
Fig. 25 , thelower crankcase 60 has anoil passage 160 extending in a transverse direction. Theoil passage 160 is integrally formed with thelower crankcase 60. The oil to be supplied to thedrive shaft 118 flows through theoil passage 160. In the present preferred embodiment, theleft end 160L of theoil passage 160 is positioned more leftward than theleft boss portion 130. Theright end 160R of theoil passage 160 is positioned more rightward than theright boss portion 134. That said, it is sufficient that at least a portion of theoil passage 160 should be positioned between theleft boss portion 130 and theright boss portion 134, as viewed from the rear of the motorcycle. For example, it is possible that theleft end 160L of theoil passage 160 may be positioned more rightward than theleft boss portion 130 and theright end 160R of theoil passage 160 may be positioned more leftward than theright boss portion 134. Alternatively, theleft end 160L of theoil passage 160 may be linked to theleft boss portion 130, and theright end 160R of theoil passage 160 may be linked to theright boss portion 134. As illustrated inFig. 6 , theoil passage 160 is disposed lower than thedrive shaft 118 and higher than theleft boss portion 130. As viewed from one side of the motorcycle, theoil passage 160 is disposed so that thecenter 160C of theoil passage 160 is positioned higher than thecenter 130C of theleft boss portion 130 and lower than the center (axial center) 118C of thedrive shaft 118. Theoil passage 160 is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, the distance T1 between the center 130C of theleft boss portion 130 and thecenter 160C of theoil passage 160 is shorter than the distance T2 between the center 130C of theleft boss portion 130 and thecenter 118C of thedrive shaft 118. As viewed from one side of the motorcycle, theoil passage 160 does not overlap thegears 108G of themain shaft 108 and thegears 118G of thedrive shaft 118. In the present preferred embodiment, theoil passage 160 is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, thecenter 160C of theoil passage 160 is positioned more frontward than thecenter 130C of theleft boss portion 130 and more rearward than thecenter 118C of thedrive shaft 118. That said, theoil passage 160 may be disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, thecenter 160C of theoil passage 160 and thecenter 130C of theleft boss portion 130 overlap each other. Alternatively, theoil passage 160 may be disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, thecenter 160C of theoil passage 160 overlaps thehole 132 of theleft boss portion 130. - As illustrated in
Fig. 8 , theoil passage 160 is disposed so as to overlap thedrive shaft 118, as viewed in plan of the motorcycle. Theoil passage 160 is disposed so that, as viewed in plan of the motorcycle, a portion of theoil passage 160 overlaps a portion of theleft boss portion 130 and a portion of theright boss portion 134. As illustrated inFig. 25 , theoil passage 160 is disposed so that, as viewed from the rear of the motorcycle, a portion of theoil passage 160 overlaps a portion of afirst rib 133 and a portion of asecond rib 137. In the present preferred embodiment, theoil passage 160 disposed higher than theleft boss portion 130 and theright boss portion 134, as illustrated inFig.25 , and as viewed from the rear of the motorcycle, theoil passage 160 does not overlap theleft boss portion 130 and theright boss portion 134. However, it is possible that theoil passage 160 may overlap theleft boss portion 130 and theright boss portion 134, as viewed from the rear of the motorcycle. - As illustrated in
Fig. 8 , thetransmission chamber 115 has afront wall 115A, aleft wall 115B, aright wall 115C, and arear wall 115D. Theleft wall 115B extends rearward from thefront wall 115A. Theright wall 115C is positioned to the right of theleft wall 115B and extends rearward from thefront wall 115A. Therear wall 115D connects a rear end portion of theleft wall 115B and a rear end portion of theright wall 115C. As illustrated inFig. 24 , thefirst rib 133 provided with theleft boss portion 130 and thesecond rib 137 provided with theright boss portion 134 are formed on therear wall 115D. Thefirst ribs 133 and thesecond ribs 137 extend rearward and in a vertical direction, from therear wall 115D. Theoil passage 160 intersects thefirst ribs 133 and thesecond ribs 137. As illustrated inFig. 6 , thefront end portion 133A of each of thefirst ribs 133 is disposed more frontward than theoil passage 160. - As illustrated in
Fig. 24 , theoil passage 160 has a firstouter wall 162, which constitutes a portion of the outer surface of thelower crankcase 60. In the present preferred embodiment, the firstouter wall 162 constitutes a portion of the outer surface of therear wall 115D of thetransmission chamber 115. As illustrated inFig. 8 , theoil passage 160 has a secondouter wall 164, which is positioned inward of thelower crankcase 60 and which constitutes a portion of the outer surface of thelower crankcase 60. In the present preferred embodiment, the secondouter wall 164 constitutes a portion of therear wall 115D of thetransmission chamber 115. - As illustrated in
Fig. 26 , thelower crankcase 60 has driveshaft supporting surfaces Fig. 5 ). Anoil groove 172 through which oil flows is formed in the driveshaft supporting surface 170. Anoil groove 176 through which oil flows is formed in the driveshaft supporting surface 174. As illustrated inFig. 25 , thelower crankcase 60 has afirst communication passage 173 that allows communication between theoil passage 160 and theoil groove 172, and asecond communication passage 177 that allows communication between theoil passage 160 and theoil groove 176. As illustrated inFig. 7 , theupper crankcase 50 has driveshaft supporting surfaces Fig. 5 ). Anoil groove 182 through which oil flows is formed in the driveshaft supporting surface 180. - As illustrated in
Fig. 5 , oil is supplied to thefirst communication passage 173 through the oil groove 172 (seeFig. 26 ), which is formed in the driveshaft supporting surface 170, by an oil pump, which is not shown in the drawings. The oil having been supplied to thefirst communication passage 173 flows through theoil passage 160, thesecond communication passage 177, and the oil groove 176 (seeFig. 26 ), as indicated by the arrow K inFig. 5 . A portion of the oil having been supplied to theoil groove 176 flows through the inside of thedrive shaft 118, and is supplied to each of thegears 118G on thedrive shaft 118. - In the present preferred embodiment, the
oil passage 160 through which the oil to be supplied to thedrive shaft 118 is formed only in thelower crankcase 60. However, theoil passage 160 may be formed only in theupper crankcase 50, and it may be formed in both of theupper crankcase 50 and thelower crankcase 60. - As described above, in the
motorcycle 1 according to the present preferred embodiment, theoil passage 160 through which the oil to be supplied to thedrive shaft 118 flows is integrally formed with thelower crankcase 60, which is positioned below thecylinder body 70. Thus, theoil passage 160 does not need to be formed as an independent member, so it is possible to achieve cost reduction and weight reduction because of the reduction of the parts count. Moreover, because thecylinder body 70 has the plurality ofcylinders 71 to 73 arranged transversely, high revolution and high power can be achieved. - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Fig. 24 , thelower crankcase 60, which is provided with theoil passage 160, has thefirst rib 133 formed with theleft boss portion 130 and thesecond rib 137 formed with theright boss portion 134 is formed, both thefirst rib 133 and thesecond rib 137 protruding outward from theouter wall 115D of thelower crankcase 60. Provision of thefirst rib 133 and thesecond rib 137 in this way prevents twist of theleft boss portion 130 and theright boss portion 134. - In the present embodiment, as illustrated in
Fig. 25 , theoil passage 160 is disposed so that a portion of theoil passage 160 overlaps a portion of afirst rib 133 and a portion of asecond rib 137, as viewed from the rear of the motorcycle. This can prevent the vertical size of theinternal combustion engine 40 from increasing. - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Figs. 4 and25 , thelower crankcase 60 has theleft boss portion 130, which is disposed between the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32 and secured to the leftmain frame 22 by thefastener 150, and theright boss portion 134, which is disposed between the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32 and secured to the rightmain frame 32 by thefastener 150. In addition, at least a portion of theoil passage 160 is positioned between theleft boss portion 130 and theright boss portion 134, as viewed from the rear of the motorcycle. This increases the strength of thefirst rib 133, on which theleft boss portion 130 is formed, and thesecond rib 137, on which theright boss portion 134 is formed. - In the present embodiment, as illustrated in
Fig. 26 , theoil passage 160 has the firstouter wall 162, which forms a portion of the outer surface of thelower crankcase 60. Thus, the firstouter wall 162 of theoil passage 160 and a portion of the outer surface of thelower crankcase 60 are formed of the same component. Therefore, the volumetric space within thelower crankcase 60 is greater than in the case that these components are formed of different components. This offers more freedom in component layout. - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Figs. 7 and8 , theupper crankcase 50 and thelower crankcase 60 together form thecrank chamber 45 accommodating thecrankshaft 42, and thetransmission chamber 115 accommodating thedrive shaft 118. Theoil passage 160 has the secondouter wall 164, which is positioned inward of thelower crankcase 60 and forms a portion of thetransmission chamber 115. Thus, the secondouter wall 164 of theoil passage 160 and a portion of thetransmission chamber 115 are formed of the same component. Therefore, the volumetric space within thelower crankcase 60 is greater than in the case that these components are formed of different components. This offers more freedom in component layout. - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Fig. 8 , the transverse length H1 of thetransmission chamber 115 is shorter than the transverse length H2 of thecrank chamber 45, and the secondouter wall 164 of theoil passage 160 forms a portion of thetransmission chamber 115 of thelower crankcase 60. Thereby, theoil passage 160 can be made compact in size. - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Fig. 26 , thetransmission chamber 115 has thefront wall 115A, theleft wall 115B extending rearward from thefront wall 115A, theright wall 115C extending rearward from thefront wall 115A, and therear wall 115D connecting theleft wall 115B and theright wall 115C to each other. Therear wall 115D has thefirst rib 133 and thesecond rib 137, extending rearward and in a vertical direction from therear wall 115D and respectively having theleft boss portion 130 and theright boss portion 134. Theoil passage 160 intersects thefirst ribs 133 and thesecond ribs 137. Because thefirst rib 133 having theleft boss portion 130 and thesecond rib 137 having theright boss portion 134 intersect theoil passage 160, the strength of thefirst rib 133 and thesecond rib 137 is enhanced. As a result, theleft boss portion 130 and theright boss portion 134 have high rigidity. - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Fig. 6 , theoil passage 160 is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, the distance T1 between the center 130C of theleft boss portion 130 and thecenter 160C of theoil passage 160 is shorter than the distance T2 between the center 130C of theleft boss portion 130 and thecenter 118C of thedrive shaft 118. Because theoil passage 160 is disposed compactly within a limited space in thelower crankcase 60 in this way, theinternal combustion engine 40 is prevented from increasing in size. - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Fig. 6 , theoil passage 160 is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, thecenter 160C of theoil passage 160 is positioned more frontward than thecenter 130C of theleft boss portion 130 and more rearward than thecenter 118C of thedrive shaft 118. Because theoil passage 160 is disposed compactly within a limited space in thelower crankcase 60 in this way, theinternal combustion engine 40 is prevented from increasing in size. - In the present preferred embodiment, the
internal combustion engine 40 further includes thefirst gear 118G provided on thedrive shaft 118, and theoil passage 160 is disposed so as to overlap at least one of thedrive shaft 118 and thefirst gear 118G, as viewed in plan of the motorcycle. This prevents theinternal combustion engine 40 from increasing in size and also offers more freedom in layout of the components except for theoil passage 160. - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Fig. 6 , the motorcycle further includes themain shaft 108 disposed more rearward than thecrankshaft 42 and more frontward than thedrive shaft 118, and thegear 108G provided on themain shaft 108 and meshing with thegear 118G. Theoil passage 160 does not overlap thegear 108G or thegear 118G, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle. This allows theoil passage 160 to be disposed desirably irrespective of the shapes of thegear 108G and thegear 118G, and therefore offers more freedom in layout of theoil passage 160. - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Fig. 8 , theoil passage 160 is disposed so that, as viewed in plan of the motorcycle, a portion of theoil passage 160 overlaps a portion of theleft boss portion 130 and a portion of theright boss portion 134. This prevents theinternal combustion engine 40 from increasing in size. - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Figs. 7 and8 , theupper crankcase 50 has the driveshaft supporting surfaces drive shaft 118. Theoil groove 182 through which oil flows is formed in the driveshaft supporting surface 180. Thelower crankcase 60 has the driveshaft supporting surfaces drive shaft 118. Theoil groove 172 through which oil flows is formed in the driveshaft supporting surfaces first communication passage 173 that allows communication between theoil passage 160 and theoil groove 172, and thesecond communication passage 177 that allows communication between theoil passage 160 and theoil groove 176. Because theoil grooves shaft supporting surfaces oil grooves - In the present preferred embodiment, as illustrated in
Fig. 6 , theoil passage 160 is integrally formed with thelower crankcase 60, and theoil passage 160 is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, thecenter 160C of theoil passage 160 is positioned higher than thecenter 130C of theleft boss portion 130 and lower than thecenter 118C of thedrive shaft 118. Because theleft boss portion 130 is positioned lower than thedrive shaft 118 and theoil passage 160, the stability of thelower crankcase 60 on the leftmain frame 22 and the rightmain frame 32 is improved. -

Claims (14)
- A motorcycle comprising:a body frame (20); andan internal combustion engine (40), the internal combustion engine (40) comprising a crankshaft (42), a drive shaft (118) to which torque of the crankshaft (42) is transmitted,an upper crankcase (50) disposed above the crankshaft (42) and the drive shaft (118), a lower crankcase (60) disposed below the crankshaft (42) and the drive shaft (118) and joined to the upper crankcase (50), and a cylinder body (70) disposed above the upper crankcase (50) and including a plurality of cylinders (71,72,73) arranged transversely, wherein:at least one of the upper crankcase (50) and the lower crankcase (60) includes a boss portion (130,134), having a hole (132,136) for receiving a rod-shaped fastener (150) extending transversely, and being secured to the body frame (20) by the fastener (150); andthe at least one of the upper crankcase (50) and the lower crankcase (60) includes an oil passage (160) through which oil to be supplied to the drive shaft (118) flows, the oil passage (160) integrally formed with the upper crankcase (50) and/or the lower crankcase (60) and extending in a transverse direction, wherein the upper crankcase (50) having the oil passage or the lower crankcase (60) having the oil passage (160) includes a rib (133,137) having the boss portion (130,134) and protruding outward from an outer wall of the upper crankcase (50) or from an outer wall (115D) of the lower crankcase (60), and the oil passage (160) intersects the rib (133,137).
- A motorcycle according to claim 1, wherein the oil passage (160) is disposed so that a portion of the oil passage (160) and a portion of the rib (133,137) overlap each other, as viewed from the rear of the motorcycle.
- A motorcycle according to claim 1 or 2, further comprising:a head pipe (5); and wherein:the body frame (20) includes a left main frame (22) extending rearward and obliquely downward from the head pipe (5), and a right main frame (32) extending rearward and obliquely downward from the head pipe (5) and being positioned to the right of the left main frame (22);at least one of the upper crankcase (50) and the lower crankcase (60) includes a left boss portion (130) disposed between the left main frame (22) and the right main frame (32) and secured to the left main frame (22) by the fastener (150), and a right boss portion (134) disposed between the left main frame (22) and the right main frame (32) and secured to the right main frame (32) by the fastener (150); andat least a portion of the oil passage (160) is positioned between the left boss portion (130) and the right boss portion (134), as viewed from the rear of the motorcycle.
- A motorcycle according to any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the oil passage (160) includes a first outer wall (162) forming a portion of an outer surface of the upper crankcase (50) or a portion of an outer surface of the lower crankcase (60).
- A motorcycle according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein:the upper crankcase (50) and the lower crankcase (60) includes a crank chamber (45) accommodating the crankshaft (42), and a drive chamber (115) accommodating the drive shaft (118); andthe oil passage (160) includes a second outer wall (164) being positioned inward of the upper crankcase (50) or the lower crankcase (60) and forming a portion of the drive chamber (115).
- A motorcycle according to claim 5, wherein:the transverse length of the drive chamber (115) is shorter than the transverse length of the crank chamber (45); andthe second outer wall (164) of the oil passage (160) forms a portion of the drive chamber (115) of the lower crankcase (60).
- A motorcycle according to claim 5 or 6, wherein:the drive chamber (115) has a front wall (115A), a left wall (115B) extending rearward from the front wall (115A), a right wall (115C) extending rearward from the front wall (115A), and a rear wall (115D) connecting the left wall (115B) and the right wall (115C) to each other;the rear wall (115D) has the rib (133,137) extending rearward and in a vertical direction from the rear wall (115D) and including the boss portion (130,134).
- A motorcycle according to any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the oil passage (160) is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, the distance between the center (130C) of the boss portion (130) and the center (160C) of the oil passage (160) is shorter than the distance between the center (130C) of the boss portion (130) and the center (118C) of the drive shaft (118).
- A motorcycle according to any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the oil passage (160) is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, the center (160C) of the oil passage (160) is positioned more frontward than the center (130C) of the boss portion (130) and more rearward than the center (118C) of the drive shaft (118).
- A motorcycle according to any one of claims 1 to 9, further comprising:a first gear (118G) provided on the drive shaft (118), and whereinthe oil passage (160) is disposed so as to overlap at least one of the drive shaft (118) and the first gear (118G), as viewed in plan of the motorcycle.
- A motorcycle according to claim 10, further comprising:a main shaft (108) disposed more rearward than the crankshaft (42) and more frontward than the drive shaft (118); and a second gear (108G) provided on the main shaft (108) and meshing with the first gear (118G), and whereinthe oil passage (160) does not overlap the first gear (118G) or the second gear (108G), as viewed from one side of the motorcycle.
- A motorcycle according to any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein the oil passage (160) is disposed so that a portion of the oil passage (160) and a portion of the boss portion (130,134) overlap each other, as viewed in plan of the motorcycle.
- A motorcycle according to any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein:the upper crankcase (50) and the lower crankcase (60) include a drive shaft supporting surface (170,174,180,184) for supporting the drive shaft (118);the drive shaft supporting surface (170,174,180,184) includes an oil groove (172,176,182) through which oil flows; andthe at least one of the upper crankcase (50) and the lower crankcase (60) includes a communication passage (173,177) integrally formed with the upper crankcase (50) and/or the lower crankcase (60) and configured to allow communication between the oil passage (160) and the oil groove (172,176,182).
- A motorcycle according to any one of claims 1 to 13, wherein the oil passage (160) is integrally formed with the lower crankcase (60) and is disposed so that, as viewed from one side of the motorcycle, the center (160C) of the oil passage (160) is positioned higher than the center (130C) of the boss portion (130) and lower than the center (118C) of the drive shaft (118).
