Durch eine entsprechende Ablaufsteuerung wird es hierdurch ermöglicht, in den sich an den Ablaufberg anschließenden Richtungsgleisen aus den einzelnen ablaufenden Wagen beziehungsweise Wagengruppen, die auch als Abläufe bezeichnet werden, neue Züge zusammenzustellen.
Im Sinne eines zügigen Transports der Wagen beziehungsweise der beförderten Güter ist eine möglichst kurze Verweildauer der Wagen in einem Rangierbahnhof wünschenswert und damit verbunden eine möglichst große Leistungsfähigkeit der Anlage. Andererseits sind die Möglichkeiten zur weiteren Leistungsoptimierung in modernen automatischen Rangieranlagen dadurch begrenzt, dass Unfälle oder Beschädigungen der rangierten Wagen oder ihrer Ladung, beispielsweise durch unzulässig starke Auflaufstöße der Wagen untereinander, auch unter ungünstigen betrieblichen Bedingungen zuverlässig zu vermeiden sind.
