Abstract

An object of the present invention is to prevent wires drawn out from a housing from being bent at angles larger than specified angles.
A wire cover 60 includes a first part 61 which is attached to a housing 30, extends backward from a rear side of the housing 30 while being narrowed and in which respective wires 100 are accommodated while being bent with respect to the rear side of the housing 30, and a second part 62 which extends backward from the rear end of the first part 61 and in which the respective wires 100 are accommodated while extending substantially straight. A banding band 90 for banding and fixing the respective wires 100 accommodated in the second part 62 is mounted on the second part 62.

Description

  • The present invention relates to a connector, to a wire cover therefor and to an assembling method for a connector.
  • A conventional connector is disclosed in Japanese Unexamined Patent Publication No. 2005-149941 . This connector includes a plurality of terminal fittings connected to end portions of wires, a housing in which the respective terminal fittings are accommodated and a wire cover to be attached to a rear end part of the housing. The respective wires are drawn out from the rear surface of the housing and accommodated into the wire cover. Further, the wire cover includes a first part extending backward from the rear surface of the housing while being narrowed and a second part extending substantially straight backward from the rear end of the first part.
  • According to the above conventional connector, each wire drawn out from the rear surface of the housing is bent at a specified angle with respect to the rear surface of the housing so as to extend along the inner wall of the first part. However, in the above case, since a means for restricting a bending movement of each wire at an inner side is not particularly provided, each wire may be bent at an angle larger than the specified angle and a large load may be applied to the bent part. Above all, if each wire is bent at a large angle when a rubber plug is mounted on a front end part of the wire, the rubber plug is also largely resiliently deformed in a bending direction and a state of close contact with the wire cannot be sufficiently maintained, wherefore sealability may be reduced.
  • The present invention was completed in view of the above situation and an object thereof is to prevent wires drawn out from a housing from being bent at angles larger than specified angles.
  • This object is solved according to the invention by the features of the independent claims. Particular embodiments of the invention are subject of the dependent claims.
  • According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a connector, comprising: a plurality of terminal fittings to be connected to end portions of wires; a housing in which the respective terminal fittings are at least partly accommodated and a plurality of wires are drawn out from the rear a wire draw-out surface thereof; a wire cover including a first part which is to be attached to the housing, extends away backward from a rear side of the housing while being narrowed and in which the respective wires at least partly are to be accommodated while at least partly being bent with respect to the rear side draw-out side of the housing, and a second part which extends away backward from the distal rear end of the first part and in which the respective wires at least partly are to be accommodated; and at least one banding band to be mounted on the second part for banding and fixing the respective wires accommodated in the second part.
  • Since the respective wires are banded and fixed by the banding band in the second part, a bent angle of each wire in the first part is determined to be a specified angle. Thus, a situation where each wire is bent at an angle larger than the specified angle is prevented.
  • According to a particular embodiment, there is provided a connector, comprising a plurality of terminal fittings to be connected to end portions of wires; a housing in which the respective terminal fittings are accommodated and a plurality of wires are drawn out from the rear surface thereof; a wire cover including a first part which is attached to the housing, extends backward from a rear side of the housing while being narrowed and in which the respective wires are accommodated while being bent with respect to the rear side of the housing, and a second part which extends backward from the rear end of the first part and in which the respective wires are accommodated; and a banding band to be mounted on the second part for banding and fixing the respective wires accommodated in the second part.
  • Particularly, a rubber plug is mounted on a front end part of each wire and at least partly accommodated in the housing.
  • Since the rubber plug is mounted on the front end part of each wire and at least partly accommodated in the housing, the rubber plug may be resiliently bent in a bending direction and predetermined sealability may not be able to be maintained if the rubber plug is bent at an angle larger than the specified angle in the first part. However, since the bent angle of each wire is determined to be the specified angle by the banding band according to the present invention, the rubber plug is not excessively resiliently deformed and predetermined sealability can be maintained.
  • Further particularly, at least one insertion hole and/or at least one cut through which the banding band is inserted is formed in the second part.
  • Since the insertion hole and/or the cut through which the banding band is inserted is formed to penetrate through the second part, a displacement of a banded position is prevented.

    <Embodiment>
  • One particular embodiment of the present invention is described with reference to FIGS. 1 to 8. A connector 10 according to this embodiment includes a plurality of terminal fittings 20, a housing 30, a wire cover 60 and a banding band 90. The connector 10 is connectable to an unillustrated mating connector. Note that a side to be connected to the mating connector is referred to as a front side concerning forward and backward directions in the following description.
  • The terminal fitting 20 is integrally or unitarily formed by applying bending, folding and/or embossing and the like to an electrically conductive (particularly metal) plate and includes a main body portion 21 and a wire connection portion (particularly comprising a barrel portion 22) as shown in FIG. 3. The main body portion 21 is in the form of a (particularly substantially rectangular or polygonal) tube and a mating male tab (not shown) is to be at least partly inserted thereinto to be connected. The wire connection portion is to be connected to a wire 100, wherein particularly the barrel portion 22 is to be crimped, bent or folded and connected to a rubber plug 200 and/or the wire 100 mounted on a front end part of the wire 100. Specifically, the respective terminal fittings 20 and particularly the respective rubber plugs 200 include relatively smaller small-size terminals 21 and small-size rubber plugs 210 and relatively larger large-size terminals 23 and large-size rubber plugs 220.
  • The housing 30 is made e.g. of synthetic resin and includes a housing main body 31 (particularly substantially in the form of a rectangular block long in a width direction) and a fitting tube portion 32 at least partly surrounding the housing main body 31 as shown in FIG. 3. A connection space 33 into which the mating connector is to be at least partly fitted is formed between the housing main body 31 and the fitting tube portion 32. At least one seal ring 300 is mounted on the outer peripheral surface of the housing main body 31. At the time of connecting the two connectors, the seal ring 300 is resiliently compressed between the housing main body 31 and the mating connector, whereby fluid- or liquid-tight sealing is provided between the connector and the mating connector.
  • Further, a plurality of cavities 34 are formed substantially side by side in the width direction in one or more stages or levels in the housing main body 31. The respective cavities 34 particularly include one or more relatively larger large-size cavities 35 (particularly located at opposite widthwise end parts of the housing main body 31) and one or more relatively smaller small-size cavities 36 (particularly located in a widthwise central part of the housing main body 31). The large-size terminal 23 and the large-size rubber plug 220 at least partly are inserted and accommodated into the large-size cavity 35 from an insertion side, particularly substantially from behind, and the small-size terminal 21 and the small-size rubber plug 210 at least partly are inserted and accommodated into the small-size cavity 36 from an insertion side, particularly substantially from behind.
  • The wires 100 connected to the respective terminal fittings 20 are drawn out from the a wire draw-out surface (particularly the rear surface) of the housing main body 31. On this wire draw-out surface (particularly rear surface), one or more, particularly a pair of tubular portions 37 for at least partly accommodating rear portion(s) (particularly substantially rear halves) of the large-size rubber plug(s) 220 are formed to project (particularly substantially backward) at positions corresponding to the large-size cavities 35. Each rubber plug 200 is to be resiliently held in close contact with the outer peripheral surface of the wire 100 and the inner peripheral surface of the cavity 34, thereby functioning to seal around the wire 100 and the interior of the housing main body 31 in a fluid- or liquid-tight manner. Further, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, one or more, particularly a pair of housing-side lock pieces 38 are formed to project (particularly substantially backward) at the rear end of each of upper and lower surfaces of the housing 30 while being spaced apart in the width direction. A lock projection 39 is formed to project outward at a leading end part of each housing-side lock piece 38.
  • The wire cover 60 is made e.g. of synthetic resin and particularly substantially plate-like as a whole and includes a first part 61 extending away from the housing main body 31 (particularly substantially backward) while being gradually narrowed and a second part 62 extending substantially straight away from the housing main body 31 (particularly substantially backward) from the distal or rear end (narrow end) of the first part 61 as shown in FIG. 4. The second part 62 is connected to the rear end of the first part 61 particularly substantially in a widthwise central part of the wire cover 60 and/or particularly particularly has substantially the same length in forward and backward directions as the first part 61.
  • As shown in FIGS. 4 to 6, the first part 61 includes a bottom or base wall 63 gradually narrowed and raised as it extends away from the housing 30 (particularly substantially backward from the rear side of the housing 30), a pair of side walls 64 standing up or projecting from (particularly substantially opposite widthwise side edges of) the bottom wall 63 and a pair of eaves wall 65 projecting from the upper or distal ends of the both side walls 64 toward the widthwise center. An inner space defined by the bottom wall 63, the both side walls 64 and the both eaves wall 65 serves as an accommodation space 66 for the respective wires 100 (see FIG. 3). The respective wires 100 drawn out from the wire draw-out surface (particularly the rear surface) of the housing 30 are supported on the inner surface of the bottom wall 63, and specifically the respective wires 100 located at the opposite widthwise end sides are so arranged as to be able to come into contact with the inner surfaces of the both side walls 64. The both eaves walls 65 particularly are arranged substantially in parallel to the bottom or base wall 63 across the accommodation space 66, and/or the inner ends of the both eaves walls 65 are arranged substantially in parallel to each other in forward and backward directions.
  • A contact portion 67 which can come into contact with the wire draw-out surface (particularly the rear surface) of the housing 30 is formed on a front end part of the first part 61. The contact portion 67 extends substantially in the width direction, the outer surface thereof is to be connected to that of an area behind the contact portion 67 (particularly substantially via a step) and/or the plate thickness thereof particularly is smaller than that of the area behind the contact portion 67.
  • Further, as shown in FIG. 8, one or more, particularly a pair of cover-side lock pieces 68 are formed to substantially project forward on front end part(s) of the outer surface(s) of each of the bottom wall 63 and/or the (particularly both) eaves wall(s) 65. The (particularly each) cover-side lock piece 68 is arranged on an outer side of the contact portion 67 and an entrance space 69 for the corresponding housing-side lock piece 38 is formed between each cover-side lock piece 68 and the contact portion 67 as shown in FIG. 6. Each cover-side lock piece 68 is formed with a lock hole 71.
  • The second part 62 particularly substantially has a semicircular cross-section (see FIG. 7) and/or particularly substantially extends in the form of an eavestrough in forward and backward directions as a whole. The outer and inner surfaces of the second part 62 are evenly connected to those of the first part 61. On the other hand, as shown in FIG. 6, the upper end (opposite widthwise ends) of the second part 62 are connected to the upper ends of the both side walls 64 of the first part 61 via a step and arranged slightly below the upper ends of the both side walls 64.
  • As shown in FIG. 4, one or more, particularly a plurality of ribs 72 are formed (particularly at intervals in forward and backward directions) in a rear part of the inner surface of the second part 62. The (particularly each) rib 72 substantially extends in the width direction (circumferential direction) and reaches the both widthwise ends of the second part 62. As shown in FIG. 3, the respective ribs 72 is/are fitted into recessed groove(s) 51 circumferentially formed in the outer peripheral surface of a corrugated tube 50 and function to position or hold the corrugated tube 50 with respect to the second part 62. The corrugated tube 50 is positioned by the respective ribs 72 with the respective wires 100 inserted therein and integrally fixed to the second part 62 particularly by winding a tape 400, a wire strap or tie band or the like (see FIG. 1).
  • As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the banding band 90 is mounted on a front end part (connected part to the first part 61) of the second part 62. Here, the banding band 90 is composed of or comprises a band main body 91 in the form of a flexible strip and a fixing portion 92 in the form of a (particularly substantially rectangular) block formed to bulge out at one end part of the band main body 91. The other end part of the band main body 91 is to be inserted through the fixing portion 92 and fixed at a desired position, thereby realizing an annular structure capable of being wound around the respective wires 100. Note that a known tie band or wire strap particularly can be used as such a banding band 90.
  • One or more, particularly a pair of insertion holes 73 for allowing the passage of the banding band 90 are formed to penetrate through (particularly the substantially opposite widthwise end sides of) the front end part of the second part 62. Specifically, the both insertion holes 73 are arranged at the substantially same position in forward and backward directions and/or penetrate substantially straight in a vertical direction (height direction) in the second part 62 (see FIG. 7). The insertion hole(s) 73 particularly make(s) rectangular slit(s) on (particularly substantially substantially opposite widthwise end parts of) the outer and/or inner surfaces of the second part 62. The banding band 90 inserted through the (particularly both) insertion hole(s) 73 is arranged from the insertion hole(s) 73 (particularly substantially between the both insertion holes 73) while being brought into contact with the respective wires 100 in the second part 62 from above and also brought into contact with the outer surface (lower surface) of the second part 62 from below. In other words, the banding band 90 can be arranged to at least partly surround the wires 100 and the outer part of the second part 62 particularly by passing through the insertion hole(s) 73 and thus positioning the wires 100 with resepct to the second part 62.
  • Further, as shown in FIGS. 5 and 6, one or more positioning walls 74, particularly a pair of front and rear positioning walls 74, substantially extending in the width direction are formed to project in (particularly a widthwise central part of) a front end part of the outer surface of the second part 62. As shown in FIG. 2, the both positioning walls 74 specifically substantially are arranged in parallel to and opposite to each other while being spaced apart by a distance corresponding to the width of the band main body 91 of the banding band 90 in forward and backward directions. A positioning portion 75 particularly is formed in forward and backward directions between the both positioning walls 74 on the outer surface of the second part 62, and the band main body 91 of the banding band 90 is positioned and accommodated into the positioning portion 75.
  • Next, functions of the connector 10 according to this embodiment are described.
  • In assembling, the terminal fitting 20 (particularly fitted with the rubber plug 200) and the wire 100 at least partly is inserted into each cavity 34 of the housing main body 31. When the terminal fitting 20 is properly inserted into each cavity 34, the rubber plug 200 particularly is held in close contact with the inner peripheral surface of the cavity 34 and a rear end part of the rubber plug 200 is arranged to slightly project backward from the rear surface of the housing main body 31. In this case, the rear end of the large-size rubber plug 220 is set to be located more backward than that of the small-size rubber plug 210.
  • Subsequently, the wire cover 60 is attached to the wire draw-out surface (particularly the rear surface) of the housing main body 31. In an attaching process, each cover-side lock piece 68 interferes with the lock projection 39 of the corresponding housing-side lock piece 38, thereby being resiliently deformed outwardly. When the attachment is completed, each housing-side lock piece 38 is resiliently at least partly restored and the lock projection 39 is at least partly fitted into the lock hole 71. In this way, each housing-side lock piece 38 is engaged with the corresponding cover-side lock piece 68 and the wire cover 60 is attached and fixed to the housing 30 (see FIGS. 1 and 2).
  • In the above case, the respective wires 100 are at least partly inserted into the accommodation space 66 of the first part 61 through a clearance between the inner ends of the both eaves walls 65 and inserted into the second part 62 particularly as the corrugated tube 50 is mounted in a state where parts of the wires 100 behind the first part 61 are inserted in the corrugated tube 50. The respective wires 100 particularly accommodated in the first part 61 particularly at least partly are substantially bent at the rear ends of the rubber plugs 200 with respect to forward and backward directions. In this case, the respective wires 100 are bent at larger angles as they are located closer to the opposite widthwise end sides, and the wires 100 located in the widthwise central part are arranged substantially straight in forward and backward directions.
  • Before or after the above process, the banding band 90 is mounted on or to (particularly the front end part of) the second part 62 of the wire cover 60. The band main body 91 of the banding band 90 is inserted through the insertion hole 73 (particularly one of the both insertion holes 73) to substantially face the inner side of the second part 62, and brought into contact with and wound around the respective wires 100 arranged in the second part 62 from the outer side. In that state, a leading end part of the band main body 91 particularly is inserted through the other insertion hole 73 to face the outer side of the second part 62 and inserted through the fixing portion 92 waiting outside the second part 62 to be tightly fastened. In this way, the respective wires 100 arranged in the second part 62 are banded and fixed by the banding band 90, and bent angles between the banded position and the rear surface of the housing 30 are kept at specified (predetermined or predeterminable) values. Thus, the respective wires 100 located at the opposite widthwise end sides are not excessively bent toward the widthwise central side. Nor are the rubber plugs 200 excessively resiliently deformed in bending directions of the respective wires 100. As a result, it is avoided that clearances are formed between the respective wires 100 and the respective rubber plugs 200, and specified (predetermined or predeterminable) sealability by the rubber plugs 200 is maintained. Further, the tape 400 is wound around the corrugated tube 50 and the second part 62 at an appropriate timing, whereby the corrugated tube 50 is fixed to the second part 62.
  • Note that, as shown in FIG. 2, the band main body 91 is to be at least partly inserted while being positioned in forward and backward directions by the positioning portion 75 of the second part 62 in a banded state. Further, the fixing portion 92 substantially is arranged to be able to come into contact with the both positioning walls 74 in the width direction (winding direction of the banding band 90) from a facing position on the outer surface of the second part 62. Thus, a moving range of the fixing portion 92 is limited to a range between the other insertion hole 73 and the both positioning walls 74 and an excessive movement of the fixing portion 92 in the winding direction of the banding band 90 is avoided.
  • As described above, since the respective wires 100 are banded and fixed by the banding band 90 in the second part 62 according to this embodiment, the bent angles thereof in the first part 61 are determined to be the specified (predetermined or predeterminable) angles. Thus, a situation where each wire 100 is bent at an angle larger than the specified (predetermined or predeterminable) angle is prevented. In this case, although the rubber plug 200 is mounted on the front end part of each wire 100 and accommodated in the housing 30, the rubber plug 200 is not excessively resiliently deformed and predetermined sealability can be maintained since the bent angle of each wire 100 is determined to be the specified (predetermined or predeterminable) angle by the banding band 90.
  • Since the insertion holes 73 through which the banding band 90 particularly are passed are formed to penetrate through the second part 62, a displacement of the banded position is prevented. Further, since the banding band 90 particularly is mounted on the front end part of the second part 62, the bent angle of each wire 100 is reliably determined to be the specified angle in the first part 61 from the rear surface of the housing 30 to the second part 62. In addition, since the positioning portion 75 for restricting a displacement of the mounted position of the banding band 90 in forward and backward directions particularly is formed on the outer surface of the second part 62, a displacement of the banded position is more reliably prevented.
  • Since the banding band 90 is formed with the bulging fixing portion 92 for holding the banded state and the fixing portion 92 particularly is arranged to be able to come into contact with the both positioning walls 74 in the winding direction of the banding band 90, any further movement of the banding band 90 in the winding direction is hindered by the contact of the fixing portion 92 with the both positioning walls 74. Therefore, the banding band 90 is substantially positioned in the winding direction with respect to the second part 62 and banding reliability is further enhanced.
  • Accordingly, to prevent wires drawn out from a housing from being bent at angles larger than specified angles, a wire cover 60 includes a first part 61 which is to be attached to a housing 30, substantially extends backward from a wire draw-out surface (particularly a rear side) of the housing 30 while being narrowed and in which respective wires 100 are accommodated while being bent with respect to the rear side of the housing 30, and a second part 62 which extends away from the housing 30 (particularly substantially backward) from the rear end of the first part 61 and in which the respective wires 100 are at least partly accommodated while extending substantially straight. At least one banding band 90 for banding and fixing the respective wires 100 at least partly accommodated in the second part 62 is mounted on the second part 62.
  • <Other Embodiments>
  • The present invention is not limited to the above described and illustrated embodiment. For example, the following embodiments are also included in the technical scope of the present invention.
    1. (1) The banding band only has to be able to band and fix the respective wires and is not limited to the above form.
    2. (2) It is also possible to omit the insertion hole(s). In that case, for example, at least one cut may be formed in an upper end part of the second part and the banding band may be inserted through that cut.
    3. (3) It is also possible to omit the positioning wall(s). In that case, for example, only the positioning portion may be formed by recessing on the outer surface of the second part.
    4. (4) The banding band may be mounted not only on the front end part of the second part, but also on the rear end part.
    5. (5) It is also possible to omit the corrugated tube.
