Definitions
- the present invention relates, in general, the pedals installed at the driving position of a motor vehicle, such as the brake pedals and clutch release. More particularly, this invention is concerned with such a motor vehicle pedal which is provided with a safety device, intervening in case of impact suffered by the vehicle and in particular in case of frontal impact.
- a motor vehicle pedal such as a brake pedal
- a lever pivotally mounted about a substantially horizontal axis, fixed relative to the vehicle structure.
- a pedal which is in particular a brake pedal is pivotally mounted along an axis of rotation on a support, provided with two parallel flanges.
- a drive lever which can be connected to a fixed part of the vehicle, imposes in the event of shock a displacement of the pivot axis relative to the support, in a direction defined by parallel lights formed in the two flanges of the support.
- the axis of pivoting of the pedal is moved from a first position, which is its normal position, to a second position situated further back (with reference to the front-to-back direction of the vehicle), the recoil motion of the axis following the path imposed by the lights.
- This movement of movement of the axis itself imposes a tilting of the entire pedal, so that the shoe thereof is moved forward relative to its normal position.
- This mode of operation is intended to avoid the risk of injury including the driver's ankles, risks caused by the penetration of the pad inside the passenger compartment as a result of the deformation of the vehicle body.
- the "release" of the pedal is partial, since the axis of pivoting thereof remains, even after an impact, engaged in the slots of the flanges of the support.
- the freedom of movement of the pivot axis is dependent on the clamping of the ends of this axis on the two flanges. The residual friction on these flanges opposes the displacement of the axis, therefore the pedal, hence the need to impose the trajectory of movement of this axis by a complete guidance in the lights and by the drive lever .
- the present invention aims to significantly improve, in terms of safety and reliability of the result, the type of pedal considered here, providing a solution that, while remaining simple and economical, allows to release totally rather only partially the pedal and in particular its pivot axis in case of frontal impact.
- the invention relates to a motor vehicle pedal with a safety device, the pedal being mounted along a substantially horizontal pivot axis on a support provided with two parallel vertical flanges, the pivot axis of the pedal through parallel receiving lights provided in the two flanges, and a lever being provided for, in case of shock, to pivotally move relative to the support and thus allow a displacement of the pivot axis of the pedal inside said receiving lights
- the pedal with safety device being essentially characterized by the fact that the respective lights of the vertical flanges of the support are open on the rear edge of these flanges and / or are flared in the direction of the rear edge of the flanges, and by the that the angle of rotation of the lever in the event of impact is such that this lever is able
- the lever initiates a rotational movement around its own pivot axis relative to the support, so as to successively cause:
- the lever itself comprises two outlet openings which are formed respectively in two flanges of this lever, parallel to the vertical flanges of the support, the holding lights being initially crossed by the axis of pivoting of the pedal, the two flanges of the lever being respectively located on the same side relative to each of the two vertical flanges of the support, so that, in the first part of the rotation of the lever in shock case, the flange holding lights of this lever are released from the pivot axis of the pedal and thus release the pivot axis, both in its own axial direction and in the longitudinal direction of the vehicle.
- the axis of pivoting of the pedal is thus mechanically released and certain, in case of shock, the proposed configuration to then release the axis of all side friction.
- the emerging openings, formed in the flanges of the lever are lights in the form of a circular arc centered at a point close to the pivot axis of the lever.
- the pivot axis of the pedal is released at first.
- the release of this axis under the action of the inertial force resulting from the sudden deceleration of the vehicle, causes a pivoting of the pedal around the resistant point constituted by the end of the link rod of this pedal with the brake amplifier (taking as an example a brake pedal).
- the invention further advantageously provides that the aforementioned lever comprises an ejector arm provided to cooperate with the pedal, at a point distinct from its pivot axis, for driving the pedal to release it from its support and to provoke in a certain way its "fall” or its liberation.
- the ejector arm is positioned on the aforementioned lever, so as to maintain in position the axis of pivoting of the pedal, in the normal operating position thereof. The robustness of the device is thus increased.
- the receiving lights can be configured to limit the displacement of the pivot axis of the pedal, after release of this axis, so that the "fall" of the pedal is not complete.
- the same result can be obtained, in particular with open receiving ports, by providing that the two flanges of the support are connected by a transverse wall forming an abutment limiting the displacement of the pedal, after release of the pivot axis thereof. .
- the general orientation of the outgoing and / or flared receiving lights is such that it releases the pedal in a certain way, in case of impact, even with support on it.
- the general orientation of these lights corresponds to the direction of the resulting force on the axis of pivoting of the pedal, when pressing the foot on this pedal.
- FIG. 1 is an overall perspective view of a pedal according to the present invention, in its normal position of use;
- Figure 2 is a perspective view similar to Figure 1, illustrating (with indication of two distinct positions) the process of release of the pedal in case of shock;
- Figure 3 is a side view of the pedal of Figures 1 and 2, in the normal position of use;
- FIG 4 is a cross-sectional view of this pedal, according to IV-IV of Figure 3;
- Figure 5 shows, in perspective, the release lever alone;
- Figures 6, 7 and 8 are diagrams illustrating, in side view, successive instants of the pedal release process of the preceding figures
- Figure 9 shows, in side view, a variant of this pedal with release lever with ejector arm, in the normal position of use
- Figure 10 is a view similar to Figure 9, but showing the ejector arm in action, during a shock;
- Figure 11 is a side view of another variant with ejector arm
- Figure 12 is a partial side view of another variant, with limitation of the displacement of the axis of the pedal after an impact;
- Figure 13 is a partial side view of a variant, with limitation of the displacement of the axis of the pedal after an impact;
- Figure 14 shows a variant shape of the receiving lights of the pedal support.
- a motor vehicle pedal 1 comprises a pedal body 2 which, in the normal operation of the pedal, pivots about a horizontal axis of rotation 3 relative to a pedal support 4, installed in a fixed position in the motor vehicle concerned.
- the lower end of the pedal body 2 carries a shoe 5, which is the part by which the driver of the vehicle actuates the pedal 1 with the support of his foot.
- the pedal body 2 thus constitutes a lever which, by pivoting about the axis 3, can transmit a movement and a force to a transmission or control element, variable according to the type of pedal and the control mode, with or without assistance with the force, this member being able to be an operating rod as symbolized in 6.
- the pedal body 2 can be further connected to the pedal support 4 by a properly guided return spring 7, which brings the shoe 5 back to its rest position, when it is no longer depressed by the driver's foot.
- the pedal support 4 comprises two parallel vertical flanges 4a and 4b, which form a kind of screed.
- the two flanges 4a and 4b are respectively provided two parallel receiving lights 8a and 8b, which open out one and the other on the rear edge (with reference to the longitudinal direction of the vehicle) of the respective flange.
- the axis of rotation 3 is positioned in the two receiving holes 8a and 8b, and this axis 3 connects the two flanges 4a and 4b.
- the pedal 1 also includes a release lever 9 provided to intervene in case of shock.
- the lever 9 itself comprises two parallel vertical flanges 9a and 9b, which are also parallel to the vertical flanges 4a and 4b of the support 4.
- the two flanges 9a, 9b of the vertical lever 9 are respectively located on the same side with respect to each of the two vertical flanges 4a, 4b of the support 4.
- a horizontal axis 1 which passes through all these flanges 4a, 4b, 9a and 9b, provides a pivotal mounting of the lever 9 relative to the support 4, the axis 10 being parallel to the axis of rotation 3 of the pedal body 2.
- the release lever 9 itself comprises, formed in its two flanges 9a and 9b, respective outlet openings 1 1a and 1 1b, which are traversed normally by the axis of rotation 3 of the pedal body 2 and which ma me this axis 3 longitudinally, and also transversely by a certain tightening which involves a spacer 3a mounted around the axis 3 (see Figure 4).
- the two holding lights 9a and 9b of the lever 9 have an arcuate shape and are centered at a point close to the pivot axis 1 0 of the lever 9 (see Figure 5).
- the center of the lights 11a and 11b is placed slightly above the pivot axis 110 of the lever 9, so that in case of loosening of the pivot axis 3 of the body of pedal 2 and biasing of the pedal, the reaction on the axis 3 related to the foot support force does not tend to eject and rotate the lever 9, but contributes to the opposite, it is to hold the lever 9 so that it can play its role in case of shock. Nevertheless, a breakable rivet may also prohibit any undesirable pivoting movement of the lever 9, in the normal driving phases of the vehicle.
- This embodiment, and the associated operation are particularly applicable to a pedal 1 which is a brake pedal, the rod 6 being in this case a brake actuating rod; it is also applicable to a clutch pedal.
- Figures 9 and 10 illustrate a variant of the pedal 1 object of the invention, which is rather a clutch pedal, provided with a device 12 for assistance with the effort that can be a hindrance to the "fall" natural of the pedal, even after release of the pivot axis 3.
- the release lever 9 further comprises an ejector arm 13 which, during the pivoting of the lever 9 in case of shock, goes into a first part of its stroke longitudinally release the pivot axis 3 without compensation of the force exerted by the assistance device. In a second part of its stroke, the ejector arm 13 will exert compensation in the opposite direction of the force exerted by the assistance device, the axis 3 being released.
- the ejector arm 3 1 is a simple extension of one of the flanges 9a or 9b of the lever 9.
- FIG. 11 shows another embodiment, still possible, of an ejector arm 13 attached to the release lever 9.
- the line in continuous lines indicates the rest position of the pedal body 2, while the line in dotted lines corresponds to the release of said pedal body, after a shock.
- the ejector arm 13 is here a separate element, for example linked by welding to the lever 9. This ejector arm 13 makes it possible to compensate the effort of an assistance device in order to release the pedal in rotation once its axis 3 has been released, in case of shock.
- the embodiment of FIG. 11, with an ejector arm 13 constituted by a distinct element (and not by a simple extension of the lever 9), also has the following advantages:
- FIG. 12 shows a variant, in which the receiving lights 8a and 8b do not open on the rear edge of the flanges
- FIG. 13 shows yet another variant, in which the receiving lights 8a and 8b open on the rear edge of the flanges 4a and 4b of the pedal support 4.
- the two flanges 4a and 4b are here connected by a transverse wall 4c which " closes the pedal support 4.
- the outgoing receiving holes 8a and 8b of the pedal support 4 may have a very flared "V" shape, which provide free clearance of the pivot axis in the two extreme body positions.
- pedal 2 namely the rest position of the pedal and the fully depressed position of the pedal, and of course also for any intermediate position of this pedal. More particularly, as shown by the lines of this figure 11, the upper edge of the lights 8a and 8b corresponds to the trajectory in the rest position, and the lower edge of the same lights corresponds to the trajectory in the depressed position.
- the invention is not limited to the embodiments of this motor vehicle pedal with safety device which have been described above, as examples; it embraces, on the contrary, all variants of implementation and application respecting the same principle. It is thus, in particular, that one would not depart from the scope of the invention by modifying the forms of detail of the various components or parts of the pedal, for example the shape of the lights of the pedal support and the lever of liberation.
