Abstract

The invention relates to the use of carrier plates having holes for fiber bundles and at least one hole or recess for a soft elastic element used for producing brushes, particularly toothbrushes. The fiber bundles are inserted into the holes, and the fastening ends of the fiber bundle protruding out of the holes are attached to the carrier plate by fusing. The hole or recess for a soft elastic element is thereby at least largely kept away from the fused material. The soft elastic element is produced by injecting in an injection mold through the hole or recess, forming a layer of the soft elastic material on the side of the fused fastening ends of the fiber bundle. The carrier plate is combined with a brush body before or after injecting the soft elastic material. To this end, the brush body is either produced separately and connected to the carrier plate by welding or the like, or the carrier plate is encapsulated by the mass of the brush body.

Description

The invention relates to a method for producing brushes, in particular toothbrushes.
Traditionally, the attachment of bristle bundles or fiber bundles to brush bodies by means of slings or metallic anchor plates. In processes that do not require loops or anchor plates, fiber bundles are attached to carrier platelets by inserting their attachment ends into holes in the carrier plate and fusing them to the back thereof. There is often a desire to incorporate cleaning elements into the bristle field (e.g., soft elastic cleaning elements, pins, rods, platelets, etc.) in addition to conventional bristles and fiber bundles. For this purpose, the carrier plates are provided with additional holes or recesses, in which the soft elastic material is introduced by an injection molding technique. With the method according to the invention, which is indicated in the appended patent claims, a continuous layer of the soft elastic material is formed on the rear side of the carrier plate at the same time as the soft elastic element or a plurality of soft elastic elements is injection molded. This layer of soft elastic material can serve various purposes.
In a first embodiment of the method, after the fiber bundles are attached thereto, the carrier plate is attached to a brush body. Alternatively, the carrier plate with the fiber bundles attached thereto is introduced into an injection mold and injection-molded to form the brush body. In both cases, the holes or recesses of the support plate, which are provided for soft elastic elements, remain free, and in a subsequent further manufacturing step, the soft elastic mass is injected through the free holes or recesses in an injection mold. In this case, a continuous layer of soft elastic material is formed on the back side of the brush body. This layer of soft elastic material is integral with the soft elastic elements integrated into the bristle field. The exposed on the back of the brush body layer of soft elastic material may have the function of a tongue cleaner or even give the brush desired optical or haptic properties.
According to another embodiment of the method, the layer of flexible material is also formed on the back side of the carrier plate, but lies directly above the layer of the fused attachment ends of the fiber bundles. In this embodiment of the method, the carrier plate with the fiber bundles attached thereto is introduced into an injection mold, and the soft-elastic mass is injected through the holes or recesses of the carrier plate released from the melt. The layer of soft elastic material on the back of the carrier plate covers the fused attachment ends of the fiber bundles and is molded integrally with the pin or plate-shaped, soft elastic elements that are integrated into the bristle field. Subsequently, the carrier plate with attached fiber bundles, soft elastic elements and the layer of soft elastic material is connected to a brush body. For this purpose, it can be attached to a finished brush body, for example by welding, or it is encapsulated in an injection mold to form the brush body. In this embodiment, the layer of soft elastic material is disposed inside the brush and is not visible to the outside. Their function is to form a perfect seal on the back of the carrier plate. This seal is useful on the one hand in the use of the brush, especially as a toothbrush, as it prevents any ingress of moisture or foreign bodies into the interior of the brush. Particularly useful is the seal through the layer of soft elastic material when the carrier plate is encapsulated to form the brush body in an injection mold with plastic compound. During this process, care must be taken that the injected plastic mass does not penetrate into the bundle holes, which results in a critical injection pressure. By sealing the bundle holes with the layer of soft elastic material, the injection pressure is easy to control. According to a further aspect of the invention there is provided a method of manufacturing brushes in which the fiber bundles are also secured to a support plate by fusing the attachment ends and the support plate has at least one additional hole or recess in addition to the bundle holes. The further hole or the recess can be used both for molding a soft elastic element and for the later attachment of separately manufactured parts such as so-called. Stimulators. In any case, it is ensured that the melt of the fiber bundles does not close the further hole or the recess. This is achieved by limiting the flow of the melt by means of suitably shaped edge contours on the support platelets, borders on a heated stamp used for melting or by means of a mask.

Fig. 13 is a schematic perspective view for illustrating a particular aspect of the invention. Four steps of a first embodiment of the method according to the invention for producing a brush, in this case a toothbrush, are shown in FIGS. 1 a to d. FIG. 1a is a plan view of a plastic carrier sheet 10 having a group of bundle holes 12 whose arrangement corresponds to a desired bristle pattern. In addition to these bundle holes 12, there are further holes 14 which have a particular designation. The carrier plate 10 has a generally oval shape corresponding to the head of a toothbrush. It can be made by injection molding.
Fiber bundles 16 are inserted into the bundle holes 12 of the carrier plate 10, the attachment ends of which are melted on the back side of the carrier plate in order to fasten the fiber bundles to the carrier plate. The carrier plate 10 with the fiber bundles 16 fastened thereto is shown in FIGS. 1 b, 2 b and 3 b. It can be seen that the special holes 14 are unpopulated. FIG. 3b shows that the molten attachment ends of the fiber bundles 16 form a continuous layer 17 on the rear side of the carrier plate 10. In this continuous layer 17 of the melt surface areas are recessed, which correspond to the specific holes 14, so that they remain free of melt. This can be achieved in different ways. A first measure is to make the carrier plate 10 with melt edges which delimit the area into which the melt can flow. Another possibility is to use a heating punch for melting, which come into contact with the fiber ends surfaces edge contours that limit the flow of the melt. Another possibility is to place a mask over the carrier plate, this mask having suitably shaped edges which limit the flow of the melt. Below, an embodiment using such a mask will be described with reference to FIG.
In FIGS. 1c, 2c and 3c, the carrier plate with the fiber bundles attached thereto is connected to the head of a brush body 18. The connection Forming the carrier plate with the brush body can be done in two ways. In a first variant of the brush body is made separately and provided with a recess into which the carrier plate is inserted with the attached fiber bundles. Subsequently, the carrier wafer is welded to the head region of the brush body in order to produce a non-detachable connection. According to a second variant, the carrier plate is introduced with the fiber bundles attached thereto in an injection mold and molded with plastic, whereby the head and stem of the brush body are formed. In both variants, the special holes 14 remain at least largely free. As can be seen in Figure 3c, go through the special holes 14 to the back of the brush head, since the brush body has corresponding recesses in the head area. Furthermore, the brush body is provided with a flat recess 20 on the back of its head region.
The brush body 18 with attached carrier plate 10, as shown in Figures 1c, 2c and 3c, is then introduced into an injection mold, in order to produce in a further manufacturing step, a soft elastic mass, an elastomer such as TPE or the like, through the special holes 14 and suitable To inject cavities so that pin-shaped elements 22 are made of soft elastic material anchored in the holes 14. These soft-elastic elements 22 are part of the bristle field and are in the embodiment shown here at the two longitudinal edges of the brush head. Simultaneously with the soft elastic elements 22, the soft elastic mass is injected into the recess 20 at the back of the brush head, so that a continuous layer 24 of soft elastic material is formed, which fills the entire recess 20 and through the holes 14 with the soft elastic elements 22 in one piece connected is. The layer 24 of soft elastic material thus occupies the back of the brush head and can, for example, have the function of a tongue cleaner. Their function can only be to give the brush a special look or feel. The soft elastic elements 22 have in particular a cleaning or massage function.
The layer 24 of soft elastic material does not necessarily have to be introduced into a recess of the brush head. If no recess 20 is present, the layer 24 is raised on the back of the brush head and has the same function.
In the second embodiment shown in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6, the first method steps are identical and will therefore not be described again. In the step illustrated in FIGS. 4c, 5c and 6c, the soft-elastic elements 22a are injection-molded directly onto the carrier plate 10a. In this case, a continuous layer 24a of soft elastic material is formed on the back of the carrier plate 10a, which completely covers the layer 17a of molten attachment ends of the fiber bundles formed in the previous step. In the subsequent step, illustrated in Figures 4d, 5d and 6d, the carrier plate 10a with the fiber bundles 16a, soft elastic elements 22a and the soft elastic material layer 24a attached thereto is attached to a brush body 18a. As in the embodiment described above, this can be done in two ways, be injected by attaching the carrier plate to a separately prepared brush body, on the other hand by molding the carrier plate with the material from the stem and head of the brush body.
In the above-described embodiment, the soft elastic material layer 24a inside the brush head is sandwiched between the layer 17a and an inner wall of the brush head. The layer 24a has here mainly the function of a seal. In particular, it forms a perfect seal of the bundle holes 12a both against penetration of moisture or foreign bodies from the outside into the interior of the brush head and against plastic mass of the brush body during the injection molding of the carrier plate under high injection pressure.
Figures 7, 8 and 9 show a variant of the first embodiment of the method and therefore largely correspond to Figures 1, 2 and 3. Different is only the brush, in particular the bristle field with an integrated soft elastic element. This soft elastic element 22b is generally cross-shaped in plan view and is located in the middle of the bristle field. Accordingly, the support plate 10b has in its center a recess 14b, in which the soft elastic element 22b is anchored. The production follows in the same way as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 and is therefore not described again.
The method steps for producing a toothbrush illustrated in FIGS. 10, 11 and 12 follow the second embodiment of the method and thus correspond to FIGS. 4, 5 and 6, but show a variant of a toothbrush shown in FIGS. 7, 8 and 9 , The process steps shown in FIGS. 10, 11 and 12 will therefore not be described again.
Die Maske 28 wird als Platte beispielsweise aus Stahl hergestellt.FIG. 13 shows the use of a mask 28 for limiting the flow of the melt, which is generated when the attachment ends of the fiber bundles come into contact with the heated surface of a punch 30, in one embodiment of the brush, which is the one shown in FIGS , 8 and 9 or 10, 11 and 12 corresponds. The mask 28 has, on the one hand, an edge which bounds the outer edge of the molten layer and, on the other hand, an island region 32 which delimits the region around the recess 14b of the carrier plate 10. The mask 28 is made as a plate, for example made of steel.
The described measures by which certain holes or recesses in the carrier plates are at least largely kept free can not only serve the purpose of integrating flexible elements by injection molding. Rather, embodiments are also intended in which separately manufactured parts are subsequently applied in the released holes, recesses or openings.
In a similar manner, a mask 28 may be used if the carrier plate has only ordinary bundle holes and no special holes or recesses for soft-elastic elements or the like. In this case, the mask 28 limits only the outer edge of the melt. This makes it possible to use completely flat carrier plates which do not have an integrally formed raised boundary for the melt, such as e.g. shown in Fig. 12a.
