Description

  • The object of the present invention is a device of flattened shape for return actioning a handle.
  • Devices for return actioning a handle are well known, in particular a handle which actions a lock of the "latch" type, wherein a pawl is actuated by rotating the handle itself.
  • When the user releases the handle the latter is returned to the original position by return means (a spring or other functionally equivalent means) present in the lock, returning the pawl and the other parts of the lock which connect the pawl to the handle into the rest condition.
  • The return means positioned in the lock are not always able to operate correctly, especially if the handle is very large and/or heavy (for example because it is made in brass, zamak, etc.) and/or has a particular shape or if the lock at rest does not maintain the handle in the correct position (for example due to errors of manufacture and/or of design): to avoid this drawback it is common practice to apply to the exterior of the door (or of the lock) a washer in whose interior an additional return spring is placed, and positioning elements.
  • This washer, projecting with respect to the plane of the door, is a valid solution (from the functional viewpoint) to the problem of returning and maintaining the handle in a horizontal position, but this is not always popular with the public and/or interior designers who would prefer to limit (essentially for aesthetic reasons) the overall dimensions of bodies which project with respect to the plane of the door.
  • The object of the present invention is to make a device for return actioning a handle which, in order to meet the demands of the public, has a flattened shape so as to reduce the projection from the plane of the door and house at the same time a return spring and positioning elements for the handle,
  • This object is achieved by means of a device for return actioning a handle which has the features listed in claim 1.
  • Further advantageous features of the invention form the object of the dependent claims.
  • Substantially, a device of flattened shape for return actioning a handle made according to the invention consists at least of
    • a hollow body, comprising a cylindrical tang to be inserted in a recess, formed across the depth of the door, and an annular rim, perpendicular to the hollow body, which abuts against the door;
    • a driving disk, placed inside the cylindrical tang and having a hole suitable for housing the pin with square section which connects one to the other two handles placed at opposite sides of the door;
    • a cylindrical spring wound axially, placed inside the cylindrical tang between the inner wall of the tang and the outer wall of the driving disk, which acts on the driving disk to return action the handle;
    • means suitable for fastening the hollow body to the door.
  • The use of a cylindrical spring wound axially, which has a diameter smaller than that of springs with coils wound radially normally used, allows the device to be housed in a recess formed in the door, leaving space for the fastening elements (screws) without having to increase the diameter of the annular rim of the hollow body.
  • Preferably the device comprises also a metal covering element or washer, snap fastened to the annular rim of the hollow body to hide the device.
  • The invention will now be described with reference to preferred embodiments purely by way of an example (and therefore non-limiting) illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where:
    • Figure 1 schematically shows an exploded view of a device according to a first embodiment of the invention;
    • Figure 2 schematically shows an exploded view of a portion of door equipped with two of the devices of Figure 1;
    • Figure 3 schematically shows a front view of the portion of the door of Figure 2 holding a lock and a pair of handles;
    • Figure 4 schematically shows the portion of door of Figure 3 sectioned along the plane A-A to show two devices of Figure 1 assembled and fastened to the door and to the handles;
    • Figure 5 schematically shows an exploded view of a device according to a second embodiment of the invention;
    • Figure 6 schematically shows an exploded view of a door equipped with two of the devices of Figure 5;
    • Figure 7 schematically shows, in section, the portion of a door holding a lock, a pair of handles and two devices of Figure 5 assembled and fastened to the door and to the handles.
  • In the accompanying figures corresponding elements will be identified by the same reference numerals.
  • Figure 1 schematically shows an exploded view of a first device 1 made according to the invention, which comprises at least
    • a hollow body 2, made up of a metal body 21 and a body in plastic material 22, and comprising a cylindrical tang 24, to be inserted in a recess 3, which in this case is through (Figures 2 and 4) made across the depth of a door 4, and an annular rim 23, perpendicular to the axis of symmetry of the hollow body 2, which abuts against the door 4;
    • a driving disk 5, placed inside the cylindrical tang 24 and having a hole 6 suitable for housing a pin 7 (Figures 2 and 4) which connects one to the other two handles 8 placed at opposite sides of the door 4;
    • a cylindrical spring 9 wound axially, placed inside the cylindrical tang 24 between the inner wall of the tang 24 and the outer wall of the driving disk 5, which acts on the driving disk 5 to return action a handle 8;
    • means (omitted in Figure 1) suitable for fastening the hollow body 2 to the door 4.
  • Preferably the device 1 further comprises a metal covering element (or washer) 10, advantageously provided with a bush 11 made in plastic material (for example nylon) to reduce the friction between the end of the handle 8 and the element 10, to be applied to the hollow body 2 in order to hide the device 1.
  • In the preferred embodiment described here, the driving disk 5 is fastened inside the hollow body 2 by means of projections 53 which snap engage elastically in a flange 54 placed, preferably, on the bottom of the cylindrical tang 24 but, without departing from the scope of the invention, the driving disk 5 can be fastened inside the hollow body 2 in another manner in itself known.
  • The locks normally used comprise means suitable for limiting the amplitude of the rotation of the pin which carries the handles; in the preferred embodiment described here, the amplitude of rotation of the driving disk 5 with respect to the hollow body 2 (i.e. the amplitude of the rotation of the pin 7) is also limited by a pair of tongues 51, belonging to the driving disk 5, which are housed in respective recesses 52 on the inner surface of the cylindrical tang 24 of the hollow body 2.
  • The metal body 21, made up of the annular rim 23 and of the cylindrical tang 24, is fastened to the door 4 by means of screws 12 (Figure 2) inserted in seats 14 (only one of which has been denoted in Figure 1 with the corresponding reference numeral) formed in the annular rim 23 and suitable for housing the head of one of said screws 12.
  • Snap fastened to the metal body 21 is the body in plastic material 22, whereto the covering washer 10 is snap fastened in turn, thus avoiding a metal-metal contact.
  • Figure 2 schematically shows an exploded view of a portion of a door 4 equipped with two devices 1, each of which comprises a hollow body 2, a driving disk 5 having a hole 6 suitable for housing the pin 7 which connects one to the other the two handles 8, a cylindrical spring 9 wound axially, the screws 12 suitable for attaching the hollow body 2 to the door 4 and a covering washer 10 carrying a bush 11.
  • In Figure 2 the through recess 3, made across the depth of the door 4, can also be seen.
  • Figure 3 schematically shows a front view of a portion of the door 4, holding a lock 13, a pair of handles 8 and the metal elements 10 for covering the two devices 1 housed in the door 4.
  • Figure 4 shows schematically, in section, the portion of the door 4 of Figure 3 sectioned along the plane A-A; visible in Figure 4 (in section) are the two devices 1 inverted in the through recess 3, fastened to the door 4 by means of the screws 12 and covered by the covering washers 10, the two handles 8 and the pin 7, inserted in the through recess 3, in the devices 1 and in the lock 13 and fastened in a manner in itself known to the handles 8.
  • Obviously in the case wherein a single handle is mounted on the door, a single device 1 according to the invention will be provided, the recess 3 will not be through and will have a single area suitable for housing the tang 24.
  • The through recess 3 comprises advantageously, at its ends, two zones (occupied in Figure 4 by the tangs 24 of the hollow bodies 2 of the devices 1) having a shape and dimensions corresponding to those of the cylindrical tang 24 of a hollow body 2, connected one to the other by a hole which houses the pin 7 which connects the handles 8 one to the other.
  • Figure 5 schematically shows an exploded view of a second device 1' according to the invention, which differs from the first device 1 essentially due to the fact that the hollow body 2' is made in a single piece in plastic material and due to the fact that on the annular rim 23 of the hollow body 2' there are seats 18 (each of which is suitable for housing a threaded bush 17' or a counter bush 17 belonging to the means suitable for fastening the devices 1' to the door 4) and seats 14 suitable for housing the head of a screw 12 (Figure 6) for fastening the hollow body 2' to the door 4.
  • The seats 14 and the fastening screws 12 can be omitted without departing from the scope of the invention.
  • Figure 6 schematically shows an exploded view of a door 4 equipped with two devices 1', which differs from that illustrated in Figure 2 essentially due to the fact that the means suitable for fastening to the door 4 the devices 2' consist (in addition to the screws 12) of tie rods 15, inserted in the counter bushes 17', therefore in the seats 18 of the peripheral edges 23 of the hollow bodies 2' and in through holes 16 formed in the door 4, blocked in the seat by means of the threaded bushes 17'.
  • Figure 7 schematically shows, in section, the portion of a door 4, holding a lock 13, a pair of handles 8 connected one to the other by the pin 7 inserted in the recess 3 and the two devices 1' assembled one with the other and fastened to the door 4 by means of the abovementioned fastening means (15-17, 17') and, if necessary, by means of screws 12 not visible in Figure 7.
  • The adoption of a spring wound axially 9, i.e. with overlapping coils, allows the diameter of the recess 3, made in the door 4, to be contained.
  • The tang 24 of the hollow body 2 can in this way be housed with ease, thus allowing:
    • reduced commitment to performance accuracy by the installer (who obligatorily has to succeed in guaranteeing the axiality of positioning of the assembly on the hole of the lock);
    • greater consistency of the level of door wherein the screws 12 are to be secured, ensuring lasting working life.
  • The overlapped coil spring allows great annular travel and a very high number of actuations without deterioration or breakage.
  • Without departing from the scope of the invention, a person skilled in the art may make to the device of flattened shape for return actioning a handle previously described all the changes and improvements suggested by normal experience and/or by the natural evolution of the art.
