Description

The present invention relates to a wired antenna system for receiving radio signals, in particular for a ship.

More particularly, the invention relates to such a system which comprises means for transmitting information between a free end of the antenna intended to be located at an altitude different from that of the ship, and associated with means for receiving the radio signals. and another end thereof adapted to be connected to means for retrieving the radio signals on board the ship.

Such wire antenna systems are for example currently used on board ships such as submarines.

In particular, such antennas are used in these submarines when they are diving for the reception of radio signals.

The submarine then unwinds in its wake a wire antenna whose free end is intended to rise to the surface from this submarine. The wired antenna then receives the radio signals and is equipped with amplification means thereof to transmit them through electrical conductors to corresponding means of recovery aboard the submarine.

The antenna cable may have lengths ranging from 400 to 850 meters for example and these antennas have a reception capacity in different frequency ranges, such as for example VLF / LF / HF or others.

The document US 5,319,376 describes a submarine antenna system comprising information transmission means according to the prior art.

However, this type of antenna system has a number of disadvantages.

Indeed, the signal amplification means, which are fed at the antenna end to amplify the radio signals, are fragile and therefore unreliable.

Moreover, the integration of these on board the ship is relatively difficult especially with respect to the problem of electromagnetic susceptibility in the frequency bands considered.

Moreover, and because of line losses, the length of the antenna cable is limited.

In general, it is also known that attempts have been made to use optical fiber and laser beam means to provide information transmission.

On pourra par exemple se reporter aux documents US 2006/0083520 et US 6 525 855 .For example, we can refer to the documents US 2006/0083520 and US 6,525,855 .

However, not all of these systems have been fully satisfactory and have not been considered as part of an application to the ship domain.

The object of the invention is therefore to solve these problems.

For this purpose, the subject of the invention is a wired antenna system for receiving radio signals, in particular for a ship, of the type comprising means of transmitting information between a free end of the antenna intended to be located at an altitude different from that of the ship, and associated with means for receiving the radio signals and another end thereof adapted to be connected to means for retrieving the radio signals on board the ship, characterized in that the means for transmission of information comprises optical fiber means whose end on board the ship is associated with means of emission therein of at least one laser beam, and whose other end intended to be located at an altitude different from that of the ship, comprises modulator means with electro-absorption modulation of the laser beam according to the signals r perceived adioelectrics, and in that the end of the optical fiber means onboard the ship, comprises means for recovery and opto-electrical conversion of the modulated part of the laser beam, in order to recover the radio signals.

The invention will be better understood with the aid of the description which follows, given solely by way of example and with reference to the appended drawings, in which:
  • the figure 1 represents a block diagram illustrating the structure and operation of a wire antenna system according to the invention;
  • the figure 2 schematically represents the application of such a wire antenna system to a surface building; and
  • the figure 3 represents a block diagram illustrating the application of such a wired antenna system to a submarine.

As indicated above, the invention relates to a wired antenna system for receiving radio signals, in particular for a ship.

In fact, and conventionally, this wired antenna system comprises information transmission means designated by the general reference 1 on the figure 1 between a free end of the antenna, designated by the general reference 2, intended to be located at an altitude different from that of the ship and associated with means for receiving the radio signals, and another end of this antenna, designated by general reference 3, adapted to be connected to means for recovering radio signals on board the ship.

On this figure 1 the parts of the system 4 intended to be placed on the outside of the ship and 5 intended to be on board thereof are illustrated and separated by a dashed line designated by the general reference 6.

According to the invention, the information transmission means, designated by the general reference 1, comprise optical fiber means, designated by the general reference 7 on this figure 1 , whose end on board the ship is associated with means for transmitting therein at least one laser beam.

These transmission means are designated by the general reference 8 on this figure 1 .

The other end of these fiber means, intended to be located at an altitude different from that of the ship, comprises electro-absorption modulator means designated by the general reference 9 on this figure 1 , modulating the laser beam according to the radio signals perceived by them.

The end of the optical fiber means onboard the ship also includes means for recovery and opto-electrical conversion of the modulated portion of the laser beam to recover the radio signals.

These recovery and conversion means are designated by the general reference 10 on this figure 1 .

As illustrated, the optical fiber means are for example placed in a protective cable designated by the general reference 11 which may for example comprise an internal protective braid designated by the general reference 12, which is constituted for example by KEVLAR.

The corresponding free end of this antenna then comprises a radio antenna proper designated by the general reference 13, one end of which is delimited by an antenna end electrode 14 in a conventional manner and the other end of which is connected to the antenna means. impedance matching designated by reference 15.

These are then associated with the means forming an electro-absorption modulator 9 for modulating the laser beam.

This laser beam is in fact derived from the part of the antenna on board the ship, this part comprising means forming a beam circulator, designated by the general reference 16 on this figure 1 , receiving as input the laser beam from corresponding transmission means designated by the general reference 17 in this figure, and comprising a device 18 for controlling the operation of at least one laser diode 19, for injecting this laser beam into the fiber optic means.

These recovery and conversion means 10 comprise for example at least one photodiode designated by the general reference 20 on this figure 1 , the output of which is associated with means for filtering frequency ranges of the retrieved radioelectric signals, these filtering means being designated by the general reference 21 in this figure.

It is then conceivable that such a structure has a certain number of advantages, in particular as regards its reliability, low losses in the information transmission means, because there is no electromagnetic susceptibility, an increase in the gain in sensitivity and a gain in weight of the whole.

As previously indicated, such a system can be used by a ship.

The latter can then be constituted as illustrated on the figure 2 , by a surface building as designated by the general reference 22, which then hangs behind it, an antenna system 23 according to the invention, one end of which is connected to this vessel and whose other end is adapted to be connected to an object able to gain altitude above this surface building.

This object is designated by the general reference 24 in this figure and is for example in the form of a suspension balloon of the corresponding end of the antenna.

A drone can also be used for this purpose.

However the ship can also be constituted by a submarine as schematized on the figure 3 , the submarine being designated by the general reference 25 in this figure.

The antenna system according to the invention is in turn designated by the general reference 26 on this figure 3 and its free end is then adapted to go to the surface from this submarine when it is diving.

This end of the antenna is designated by the general reference 27 on this figure 3 . On this figure 3 the radio antenna part of the antenna designated by the general reference 28 is also recognized, the electro-absorption modulator means designated by the general reference 29, thick-shell traversing means designated by the general reference 30 of conventional type and recovery and conversion means designated by general reference 31.

Also shown in this figure means means for storing the antenna, these means being for example in the form of a drum winding / unwinding of the antenna.

Of course, other embodiments can be envisaged.
