Abstract

The strip has a rectangular shaped sheet (1) with two parallel metal bands (2, 2') provided on a side of the sheet, where the sheet is made of elastomer i.e. ethylene-propylene terpolymer. The bands are located along opposed edges (3, 3') of the strip. The bands are embedded at a brim of the side of the sheet and in the thickness of the sheet, so that lateral walls of the bands are covered with elastomer and the bands are exposed to a side forming a surface to be glued to the interior of distinct sections to be joined. The bands are integrated to the sheet by vulcanization. The bands have thickness of 100 to 300 micrometers.

Description

The invention relates to a joint cover for metal gutters, in particular for roof gutters.

The roof gutters are usually composed of separate sections of gutter, which are nested in one another on their front face. These gutters are most often made of zinc, a metal that lends itself well to this use because of its ductility, its durability in an external atmosphere, and its aesthetic appearance.

In order to seal the assembly, the sections are usually brazed at the interlocking. This solution has the disadvantage that the parts can no longer move relative to each other. This would be desirable, however, the gutters being subjected to contraction and thermal expansion causing tensions that can cause warping of the assembly formed with the fastening system.

Other solutions have therefore been developed, in which the sections are connected to each other in a sealed manner, while remaining sufficiently mobile to absorb the movements of thermal origin.

For example, the sections have been bonded at the interlocking points using an elastic adhesive. This bonding technique has a limited life because the adhesive, present in a relatively thin layer, deteriorates due to shear forces.

Various types of waterproof sleeves covering the connection area between the sections have also been used. These are usually placed, at least partially, under the gutter. Such sleeves are therefore unattractive because visible from below. They also require mounting and often complex adjustment.

Another known system, called the VM ZINC ® expansion joint , consists of a central neoprene elastic core hot-vulcanized on two rolled zinc strips. On site, the metal parts are brazed at the level of the interlocking sections of gutter that we want to connect. The result is aesthetic, these joints being placed inside the gutter.

A flexible joint cover of this type is described in CSTB Technical Notice 5 / 98-1332 and has all the features of the preamble of claim 1.

However, a new trend is emerging in the industry for stormwater evacuation. Thus, for ecological reasons, it is sometimes desired to avoid any risk of contamination of the waters by dissolution of metal, even in minute quantities. This goal can be achieved by using zinc gutters, provided that the metal is coated with a protective layer raincoat. It goes without saying that this strict separation between metal and water must also be preserved at the joints between the sections of gutters. The purpose of the present invention is to provide a seal cover meeting the latter criterion, while being simple to implement on site, waterproof, aesthetic and durable.

The invention relates to a flexible cover for joining two sections of metal gutter, comprising a rectangular-shaped elastomer sheet, provided on one of its faces with two parallel metal strips, located substantially along opposite edges of the cover. joint, characterized in that the metal strips are embedded substantially at the edge of said face of the elastomer sheet and in the thickness of the latter, so that the side walls of the metal strips are covered with elastomer and that the metal strips expose only one face forming a surface intended to be glued inside the sections to be joined.

L'élastomère sera de préférence de l'EPDM.These metal strips are usefully secured to the elastomer sheet by vulcanization. They will preferably be zinc, in which case they will advantageously have a thickness of 100 to 300 microns. The elastomer will preferably be EPDM.

Another embodiment of the invention corresponds to a product such as that described above, but presented in the form of ribbon intended to be cut into individual sections each forming a joint cover.

  • Un placement par simple collage grâce à la flexibilité du joint et à la compabibilité des matériaux par rapport aux colles classiques;
The presented system achieves two essential goals:
  • Placement by simple bonding thanks to the flexibility of the joint and the compabibility of materials compared to conventional glues;
  • The lack of possible contact between the rainwater and the metal parts of the joint cover.

The joint according to the invention allows a simple and effective bonding of the joint cover on the inside of metal gutters, this through the intermediary of a metal layer previously secured to the elastomeric material. This metal layer is essential because it avoids the realization of a bonding 'metal on elastomer' on site. Such a bonding would indeed be difficult to achieve correctly because it would require precise operating conditions (cleanliness of the surfaces, temperature, humidity, placing under stress) and the use of special products (vulcanizing agents). This problem is avoided by using a joint with metal strips, which are secured to the elastomeric material in the factory under optimal industrial conditions. Note that the bonding 'metal on metal' to be made on site when laying the joint in a gutter does not pose any particular problem. It can indeed be achieved by simple means and known, such as contact adhesives, and does not require any particular procedures or knowledge.

The width of the cover will allow the use of metal strips of sufficient width for easy gluing, placed substantially along opposite edges of the elastomeric sheet. The exact arrangement of these strips will be such that the elastomer drowns the metal strips over their entire periphery while leaving their metal surface apparent. The central part of the metal-free joint cover will act as a deformation zone during the thermal movements of the gutter sections.

Each metal strip will preferably have a width of 5 to 50 mm; the deformation zone will preferably be 20 to 200 mm. The length of the joint cover will be such that it can cover the gap between two sections over the entire front periphery of the gutter. For example, for a semi-circular gutter with a diameter of 150 mm, the length will be about 235 mm.

L'EPDM (Terpolymère Ethylène Propylène) est un matériau de choix pour cette application car il possède une bonne élasticité ainsi qu'une excellente tenue en température et au rayonnement solaire.EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Terpolymer) is a material of choice for this application because it has a good elasticity as well as an excellent resistance to temperature and solar radiation.

Since metal gutters are most often made of zinc, it is advantageous to choose a compatible metal, such as zinc itself, for metal strips. Other metals, such as aluminum, could also be very suitable. Note that the metal strips could advantageously be copper in the case where the gutters themselves would be based on this metal.

The thickness of the metal strips and the metal type are chosen so as to give the joint cover a certain flexibility, ensuring easy shaping and sufficient holding during bonding on the inside of a gutter. Too low a thickness would cause a risk of tearing. For zinc, a thickness of 100 to 300 μm is ideal.

The essential feature of embedding the metal strips in the elastomeric material to expose only one face has several advantages. Firstly, it makes it possible to preserve the metal strips as much as possible from any corrosion likely to settle in the slots and the metal interstices. In addition, in combination with the use of gutters covered with a protective layer, it avoids any risk of contamination of rainwater by metals.

The Figure 1 shows an example of practical realization.

It shows a cover formed by a rectangular sheet of EPDM (1), a length of 235 mm, a width of 150 mm and a thickness of 1.5 mm. This rectangle is provided with two strips (2,2 ') of zinc, with a width of 30 mm and a thickness of 150 μ, embedded about 10 mm from each edge (3, 3'). The zone not covered with zinc (4) here has a width of 70 mm, a width deemed sufficient to allow adjustment depending on the thermal conditions.

When laying, the exposed faces of the metal strips of the joint cover are glued, for example with a neoprene glue, and the joint cover is then applied at the interlocking gutter sections.
