Claims (26)

  1. Method of packing a product (P) in a section of a packaging material having a gathered constriction, in which the gathered region of the packaging material surrounding the product (P) is closed off with a clip, comprising the followed steps.
    - folding (bunching) of the section of packaging material around the product (P) in such a way that the section of packaging material surrounds the product (P) while leaving one end exposed,
    - gathering of the section of packaging medium above the product (P) at the end which was left exposed, to form a constricted neck (H) in the packaging material, and
    - closing off of the constricted neck in the packaging material by the fitting of a clip (C),
    the neck (H) in the packaging material being held fixed when it is being closed off and the clip (C) being fed in continuously as a strip clip (S), the section of packaging material, to cause it to be gathered to form the constricted neck (H) in the packaging material, being pressed together into a neck by parts (2, 3) which can be moved towards one another, characterised in that the pressing together is performed by the movement towards one another of a gathering pusher (3) and a gathering wheel (2), the gathering pusher (3) gathering the section of packaging material by means of spaced supporting members (10, 11) which are in two planes and a gathering member (12) which is situated between them, and the gathering wheel (2) gathering the section of packaging material by means of spaced gathering members (6, 7) which are in two planes and a supporting member (8) which is situated between them, and the gathering members (6, 7, 12) and supporting member (8, 10, 11) forming the neck in the packaging material when they are moved towards one another.
  2. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that the gathering pusher (3) and the gathering wheel (2) are moved, relative to one another, towards one another.
  3. Method according to either of the foregoing claims, characterised in that, when being closed off, the neck (H) is held fixed above and below the closing-off point.
  4. Method according to claim 1, characterised in that, when being moved towards one another, the gathering members (6, 7, 12) form approximately a diamond shape which becomes smaller in size.
  5. Method according to claim 1 or 4, characterised in that the gathering members (6, 7, 12) and supporting members (10, 11) each have an approximately semi-circular recess (14) at the apex of their respective incomplete vees, thus causing an approximately cylindrical neck (H) to be formed in the packaging material.
  6. Method according to one of claims 1 to 5, characterised in that the gathering member (12) engages between the gathering members (6, 7) when they are moved towards one another.
  7. Method according to one of the foregoing claims, characterised in that the clip (C), or in other words the clip strip (S), is formed from, in particular, plastics material
  8. Method according to one of claims 1 to 7, characterised in that the clip (C), or rather the clip strip (S), is fed between the two spaced gathering members (6, 7) and two spaced supporting members (10, 11)

  14. Method according to claim 12 or 13, characterised in that the blade (19) acts on the clip strip (S), against the supporting member (8), before the section of packaging material is gathered.

  16. Apparatus for packing a product (P) in a section of a packaging material having a gathered constriction, in which the gathered region of the packaging material surrounding the product is closed off with a clip (C), having a folding duct to perform folding of the section of packaging material around the product (P) in such a way that the section of packaging material surrounds the product (P) while leaving one end exposed, having a gathering arrangement (1) to perform gathering of the section of packaging medium above the product (P) at the end which was left exposed, to form a constricted neck (H) in the packaging material, and having a means (2, 3) for closing off the constricted neck (H) in the packaging material by the fitting of a clip (C), members (6, 7, 10, 11) being provided to hold the neck (H) in the packaging material fixed when it is being closed off and means being provided to feed the clip (C) in continuously as a continuous strip clip (S), characterised in that the gathering arrangement (1) has a gathering pusher (3) and a gathering wheel (2) which are designed for movement relative to one another, the gathering pusher (3) having spaced supporting members (10, 11) which are in two planes and a gathering member (12) which is situated between them, and the gathering wheel (2) having spaced gathering members (6, 7) which are in two planes and a supporting member (8) which is situated between them.
  17. Apparatus according to claim 16, characterised in that the gathering members (6, 7, 12), in their respective cases, form approximately a vee shape.
  18. Apparatus according to claim 16 or 17, characterised in that the gathering members (6, 7, 12) and supporting members (10, 11) have an approximately semi-circular recess at the apex of each of the vees.
  19. Apparatus according to one of claims 16 to 18, characterised in that the supporting members (10, 11) of the gathering pusher (3) are designed to move independently of the gathering member (12).
  20. Apparatus according to one of claims 16 to 19, characterised in that the supporting members (8) of the gathering wheel (2) are designed to feed in the clip (C).
  21. Apparatus according to one of claims 16 to 20, characterised in that the gathering pusher (3) has a cutting-off means (13) for cutting off the clip (C).
  22. Apparatus according to one of claims 16 to 21, characterised in that the folding duct for the folding of the section of packaging material and the gathering arrangement (1) for the gathering thereof are arranged at points whose positions are separated.
  23. Apparatus according to one of claims 16 to 22, characterised in that a folding pincer (15) having two jaw members (16, 17) is provided to close the clip (C).
  24. Apparatus according to one of claims 16 to 23, characterised in that a unit, and in particular a blade (19), is provided to provide the clip (C), or rather the clip strip (S), with a notch for pulling open.
