Description

The present invention relates to a paint supply system for the coating units of a printing press, with a number of supply stations, which are assigned to the individual coating units.

The coating units of a printing machine, which is used to print a surface with a paint, must be fed by appropriate utilities. Each coating unit is therefore usually associated with its own supply station, which may include a paint container. The paint is conveyed from the container by a circulation device such as a pump to the coating unit. Excess paint can be returned from the coating unit to the container, creating a closed circuit.

Is the container empty? it must be replaced by a full container. In particular, in printing presses, which include a larger number of coating units, this replacement leads to an undesirable amount of work. In addition, the containers must be constantly transported back and forth between the individual coating units in the pressroom and a warehouse, in which filled containers held and empty containers can be parked, so that a complex logistics is required. The large number of necessary containers leads to considerable costs. Another disadvantage of the known systems is that the printing process for container change must be interrupted until a new container is connected.

US 2003/0140803 A1 describes a coating system for coating substrates, with at least one pump, at least one selector valve, a first metering device and a second metering device, wherein the pump and the selector valve are combined to form a modular supply unit and wherein the supply unit is compatible with both the first and with the second metering device configured such that the supply unit can be connected to one of the two metering devices or the other of the two metering devices. Depending on the nature of a coating liquid to be used for the respective print job, one of the available metering devices for use in the coating plant can be selected and installed in the latter. The supply unit can be connected to the installed metering device via the compatible couplings.

Object of the present invention is therefore to provide a paint supply system of the type mentioned, which ensures a continuous supply of the coating units of a printing press with reduced effort and lower costs.

This object is achieved according to the invention by a paint supply system having the features of claim 1.

The paint supply system according to the invention comprises a central supply device to which the supply stations of the coating plants are connected and from which the stations are fed. In detail, the supply device comprises at least one paint reservoir, a supply line connected thereto and a conveying device which conveys the paint from the reservoir into the supply line. From the supply line branch branches off, leading to the individual supply stations.

In this way, it is possible to continuously feed paint from the central storage container into the individual supply stations which are assigned to the coating units. An exchange of containers on the coating units themselves is therefore unnecessary. It is only necessary from time to time to replace the larger paint reservoir when it is empty. However, this can be located at an easily accessible location away from the printing press, so that the logistics problems occurring in the prior art are avoided. The supply line itself and optionally provided on the coating units container can serve as a buffer in the paint supply via the supply line, so that an exchange of the reservoir is made possible during operation, without causing an interruption in the printing process.

Advantageous embodiments of the invention will become apparent from the dependent claims.

In the following a preferred embodiment of the invention will be explained in more detail with reference to the drawing.

The single figure shows the schematic structure of a preferred embodiment of the paint supply system according to the invention.

The paint supply system 10 shown in the figure is used to supply an offset printing machine, of which only two coating units 12 and 14 are shown here. Liquid paint, which is supplied to the coating units 12,14, is applied to a respective pressure roller 16 and from there to a surface to be printed. Excess paint is collected in a collecting container 18, which is arranged below the cylinder 16.

Each of the coating units 12,14 is associated with a supply station 20,22, which includes a paint container 24 and a circulating device 26 which includes a pump. By a feed line 28, the paint from the paint container 24 is first conveyed into the circulation device 26 and then to the coating unit 12,14. The excess paint can be recycled from the collecting container 18 via a return line 30, which leads via the circulation device 26 back into the paint container 18, so that a closed circuit is formed. Such an arrangement of a supply station 20,22, which is associated with a coating unit 12,14, is well known in the art.

The individual supply stations 20,22 are connected to a central supply device 32, which will be explained in more detail below. The supply device 32 comprises two paint reservoirs 34, 36 shown in the figure below and a supply line 38, which is connected to the paint reservoirs 34, 36 by filling lines 40, 42. Specifically, from each of the two paint reservoir 34.36 from a filling line 40,42, which opens into an inlet of a control valve 44, from the outlet of the supply line 38 goes out. By switching the control valve 40 can thus determine whether paint from a first reservoir 34 or a second reservoir 36 is fed into the supply line 38. The two paint reservoirs 34,36 may in particular include different types of lacquer.

The supply device 32 further includes a pump 46 as a conveyor, which is turned on in the supply line 38 and sucks paint via the control valve 44 from one or the other paint reservoir 34,36. Downstream of the pump 46 branch off from the supply line 38 two branch lines 48,50 at various branch points, which are spaced along the length of the supply line 38 from each other. The branch lines 48,50 lead to the paint containers 24 of the supply stations 20,22. In detail, the upstream of the two branch lines 48 leads to the paint container 24 of the left in the figure supply station 20, while the downstream branching branch line 50 leads to the paint container 24 of the right supply station 22. Through the branch lines 48, 50 can be a part of the stored in the supply line 38 paint to the paint containers 24 branch off. The diverted portion is determined by control valves 52, 54 arranged at the branch points.

The supply stations 20, 22 include level gauges 56 which are arranged on the paint containers 24. These fill level meters 56 may be level switches that emit a measurement signal when the level within the paint container 24 falls below a certain level. The measuring signal can then be forwarded to the respective control valve 52, 54, whose branch line 48, 50 leads to the paint container 24, to which the triggering level gauge 56 is attached. In response to the measurement signal, the control valve 52, 54 can be opened so that the level rises again. In this way, a paint container 24 via the corresponding control valve 52,54 always refilled with paint, and it is a continuous supply of the coating unit 12,14 guaranteed.

At its end, the supply line 38 branches into two return branch lines 58, 60, which each lead back to the paint reservoirs 34, 36. At the branch point, a control valve 62 is arranged, at whose inlet the supply line 38 is connected and which has two outlets, to which the respective return branch lines 58,60 are connected. By switching the control valve 62 can thus determine which paint reservoir 34,36 the paint stream is returned. Thus, a closed paint circuit is formed by the filling lines 40,42, the supply line 38 and the return branch lines 58,60, in which the paint is circulated by the pump 46. The supply line 38 therefore forms a loop from which via the control valves 52,54 and the branch lines 48,50 paint streams are diverted to the individual supply stations 20,22.

If the outlets of the control valve 52,54 are closed, leading to the branch lines 48,50, the fluid can circulate in the loop without the paint container 24 are filled. In this position, the control valves 52,54, it is possible to flush the supply line 38 and prepare for a change of the paint. Meanwhile, if the paint containers 24 are sufficiently filled, this can take place without interrupting the printing process. A cleaning of the supply device 32 and a change from one type of paint to another is thus possible without difficulty.

It is noted that the term "central" with respect to the utility 32 merely refers to its function of feeding the individual supply stations 20, 22 together by a single device. The location of the supply device 32 can be selected depending on the spatial conditions.

The entire supply device 32 can therefore be arranged far away from the coating units 12, 14 to be supplied, and the distance between the coating units 12, 14 and the supply device 32 can be bridged by correspondingly long sections of the supply line 38. This offers the advantage that the paint reservoir 34,36 are changed at a location away from the printing press, so that can be dispensed with a cumbersome transport of paint containers in the pressroom. Moreover, the paint reservoir 34,36 may be formed considerably larger than the paint container 24 to the coating units 12,14, so that the replacement does not have to be made as often as it is the case in the prior art.
