Description
- The present invention relates to the art of electrical connectors and particularly to an electrical plug connector having a plurality of ways that mates with a complementary socket connector.
- Multiple-way connector arrangement consists of a first electrical plug connector being inserted into a complementary socket connector, both connectors having respective male and female electrical terminals that are coupled together when the first plug connector mates the second socket connector.
- In order to obtain a small electrical resistance between the electrical terminals of the respective connectors, the pressure between the conducive surface of the plugged electrical terminals needs be sufficient. Due to the existence of friction forces, it is therefore necessary to apply a high force during the plugging of one male terminal into one female terminal. In case the plug connector and the complementary socket connector have a large number of electrical terminals, the force required to mate the connectors increases in such a way that a manual operation may be rendered impossible.
- It is therefore known that connector arrangements comprising a large number of ways generally include an additional mechanical system for scaling down the required mating force and for increasing the stroke of the element that is actuated by an operator.

openings lateral wall slider 16 have the same spacing as theopenings corresponding side walls 6, 7 of thecasing 4, such that theopenings openings casing 4. - The
guide channels lateral wall guide tabs second socket connector 3 when theslider 16 is moved along the sliding direction Y. - The
front guide channel 82 extends from theopening 84 to thechannel end 88 towards thefront section 80 of eachlateral wall front guide channel 82 onto the connection direction Y is substantially equal to the projection of thefront guide slot 24 of thecasing 4 onto said connection direction Y. - The
rear guide channel 83 is preferably composed of an additionalstraight slot 90 that starts at theopening 85 and extends in the connection direction X. Theslot 90 and theopening 85 may not be delimited by two surfaces like theopening 84 but only by one surface, seeFig. 6 . After thisslot 90, therear guide channel 83 extends, like thefront guide channel 82, in a straight manner up to thechannel end 89 towards thefront section 80 of eachlateral wall rear guide channel 83 may not comprise theadditional slot 90. The projection of therear guide channel 83 onto the connection direction Y is substantially equal to the projection of therear guide slot 25 of thecasing 4 onto said connection direction Y. - A
tab 91 is formed on theupper edge 78 of eachlateral wall resilient arm 95. Eachtab 91 is adapted to make a snap fit in thefirst aperture 92 or thesecond aperture 93 in thetop edge 12 of eachcorresponding side wall 6, 7 ofcasing 4, seeFig. 4 . - A
channel 97 is formed on theinner surface 76 of eachlateral wall pins 68 of thelever 18. According to alternate embodiments, thechannels 97 can be formed on theouter surface 77 of thelateral wall channels 97 traverse the correspondinglateral walls slider 16, i.e. they extend from theinner surface 76 up to theouter surface 77. - A first or
upper channel end 110 of eachchannel 97 opens in theupper edge 78 at anopening 106 in order to introduce thepin 68 of thelever 18. Eachchannel 97 extends from theupper channel end 110 up to a second or lower channel end 111 according to the connection direction X substantially in a straight manner. - In the plane defined by the directions X and Y, the
channel 97 is delimited by theopening 106 and by a first orfront side wall 107, a second orrear side wall 108, and anend wall 109 that are formed on theslider 16. slider 16 as well as thecover 17 with thelever 18 are mounted on the casing, thepins 68 of thelever 18 are located in thechannels 97 of theslider 16. On pivoting thelever 18 relatively to thecasing 4, thelateral surface 105 of thepins 68 presses on one of theside walls lever 18 in the direction of its rear position causes thelateral surface 105 to abut against and press on thefront side wall 107, and vice versa. - In the following the second
complementary socket connector 3 will be described with reference toFig. 2 . Thesecond socket connector 3 of the connector arrangement 1 compriseselectrical terminals 35 designed to be coupled with the correspondingelectrical terminals 34 of thefirst plug connector 2, seeFig. 9 . - The
second socket connector 3 has acasing 100 havingside walls 101. Twoguide tabs side wall 101. Theguide tabs side wall 101 comprise afirst portion 102 that builds the base of theguide tabs second portion 103 projecting outwardly. Thefirst portion 102 is dimensioned to fit into theopenings casing 4 and thesecond portion 103 is dimensioned to fit into theopenings slider 16. - The
first portion 102 of theguide tabs openings casing 4, The section of the second portion . 103 substantially consists in a half circle, which projection onto the sliding direction Y corresponds to the size of theopenings slider 16. - The two
guide tabs openings casing 4 and as theopenings slider 16. In case therear guide channel 83 comprises an additional slot.90, theguide tabs guide channels side walls 101 of the'second socket connector 3 fit inside theside walls 6, 7 and endwalls casing 4 of thefirst plug connector 2. - The spatial arrangement is such that during mating and unmating of the connector assembly 1 being assembled, the
guide tabs openings slider 16 and slide along theinclined guide channels guide tabs guide channels guide tabs openings casing 4 along the connection direction X. - In the following the assembling of the
first plug connector 2 will be described. Prior to mating, theslider 16 consisting of the twolateral walls casing 4 through itsfront end wall 9 side. Theslider 16 thereby slides along thegrooves tabs 91. make a snap fit in thefirst apertures 92 in thetop edge 12 of theside walls 6, 7, seeFig. 8 . At the same time, theshoulders 96 of thecasing 4 lock the lower rails 75. In this position, the opened or not locked position, theopenings guide channels openings casing 4, such that theguide tabs second socket connector 3 can be engaged therein. - Once the
slider 16 is in the opened position, theassembly cover 17 andlever 18 can be mounted on top of thecasing 4 such that thetabs 94 of thecover 17 enter and latch into thefirst apertures 92 of thecasing 4. During this step, thelever 18 is in its rear position, i.e. it abuts against therear surface 62 of thecover 17, such that thepins 68 of thelever 18 can be engaged into thechannels 97 of theslider 16. - Prior to mating, the
first plug connector 2 is therefore assembled, wherein theslider 16 is in its opened position, thelever 18 is in its rear position, and theopenings casing 4 are aligned with theopenings slider 16. - When mating the
first plug connector 2 with thesecond socket connector 3, thecasing 100 of thesecond socket connector 3 is mounted into thecasing 4 of thefirst plug connector 2. Thefirst portion 102 and thesecond portion 103 of theguide tabs openings casing 4 and theopenings slider 16. Theguide tabs guide slots casing 4 and into the guide channels of theslider 16 along the connection direction X until they strike theslider 16. The connector assembly is in a pre-mated position. - The complete mating is obtained by pivoting the
lever 18 relative to thecasing 4 from its rear position to its front position in abutment with thefront surface 58 of thecover 17. - As the
lever 18 pivots relative to thecasing 4, thepins 68 of thelever 18 slide in thechannel 97 in the connection direction X relative to theslider 16 such that thelever 18 drives and moves theslider 16 in the sliding direction Y relative to thecasing 4. - The pivoting of the
lever 18 relatively to thecasing 4 indeed causes a circular movement of thepins 68 in the plane defined by the directions X and Y. The movement of thepins 68 along the sliding direction Y causes thelateral surface 105 of thepins 68 to push thefront side wall 107 of theslider 16, such that theslider 16 is moved along the guidinggrooves pins 68 along the connection direction X is effected between the upper and lower channel ends 110, 111 in thechannel 97 of theslider 16. - During the translational motion - along direction Y - of the
slider 16 caused by the pivoting of thelever 18, theguide tabs second socket connector 3 are forced by theguide channels slider 16 to slide into theguide slots casing 4 along the connection direction X in order to mate the first 2 and second 3 connectors. - When the first 2 arid second 3 connectors become fully mated, the
pins 68 reach the channel ends 88, 89 of therespective guide channel tabs 91 of theslider 16 make a snap fit in the second apertures in thecasing 4 to retain the connector assembly 1 in the fully mated position. To further ensure the retention of the fully mated (or closed or locked) position of the connector assembly 1, thelever 18 makes a snap fit with thetab cover 17. - To unmate the
first plug connector 2 and thesecond socket connector 3, thelever 18 is released from thetab - According to a second embodiment of the present invention, the
lever 18 pivots around projections that are formed on thecasing 4, whereas in the first embodiment thelever 18 pivots aroundprojections cover 17. - The length of the
arms lever 18 according to the second embodiment has to be sufficient to allow the installation of theelectrical terminals 34 together with theelectrical cables 36 into thefirst plug connector 2. An advantage of the first embodiment over the second embodiment thus is that thelever 18 cannot constitute an obstacle to the installation of theelectrical terminals 34 and theelectrical cables 36 because thecover 17 withlever 18 is mounted on thecasing 4 after the cables are installed.
