Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an apparatus for electrical inhibition or "electro-inhibition" to obtain the relaxation of certain muscles of the upper face.
  • Wrinkles can be due to a multitude of factors such as age, sun damage, etc., but they are mostly due to mimicry, that is to say, repeated muscle contractions (expression of joy, anger, sadness, fear, astonishment, etc.). We therefore speak of "expression lines”. These wrinkles that appear mainly in the upper half of the face are due to the interactions between the skin and the underlying muscles. We know in particular the vertical wrinkles of the forehead, the wrinkles of the corner of the eyes called “crow's feet", the horizontal wrinkles of the forehead, etc.
  • wrinkles of the forehead are caused by a prolonged tension inducing a chronic contracture is one of the three muscles of the upper of the face which are the frontal muscle (frontalis), the double eyebrow muscle (corrugator) and the pyramidal muscle of the nose (procerus), or several of them at the same time.
  • the pyramidal muscle is a small, muscular fasciculus located on the upper part of the back of the nose and between the eyes. It extends between the fascia covering the lower part of the clean bone of the nose and the deep face of the skin of the inter-superciliary region. It causes the eyebrows to draw down and the midline, creating folds on the root of the nose. It intervenes in the frown of the eyebrows, the expression of concentration or simply to reduce glare in case of bright light.
  • the frontal muscle is a flat muscle located under the skin of the forehead. It is born from the anterior edge of the epicranial aponeurosis, its fleshy fibers descend and attach to the deep surface of the skin of the superciliary and interbrowbone regions. It raises the skin of the eyebrows and produces the horizontal wrinkles and folds of the forehead.
  • the two eyebrow muscles are extended on either side of the glabella along the inner part of the brow bone. They are born from the inner end of the brow bone and move outward along the arch and end at the deep face of the eyebrow skin. They draw the eyebrows towards the midline and are responsible for the vertical wrinkles and folds of the glabella.
  • Botox ® botulinum toxin type A, derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum (known under the trade name Botox ® ). Botox ® is injected in low doses into a specific muscle that becomes paralyzed and can no longer contract. These products have a duration of action of a few months.
  • Botox ® injections are found in the general circulation of the patient.
  • a specific side effect is an observation of unwanted paralysis of the muscles of swallowing (dysphagia).
  • muscle electro-stimulation is well known.
  • the US patent US Patent 4,957,480 describes a method of toning the muscles and tissues of the face by stimulation of the motor nerves and consecutive contraction of the muscles of the face, by applying galvanic currents of predetermined amplitude, frequency and polarity through humidified electrodes by means of a liquid solution of positively and negatively charged particles for introduction into the tissues to nourish the muscles and surrounding facial tissues. It is known from this document that it is possible in this way, by a particular positioning of the electrodes directly on the muscle, to obtain a fatigue, and hence a relaxation, for example of the frontal muscle.
  • the currents are between 300 and 640 ⁇ A with a frequency between 30 and 99 Hz, with alternating polarization and a duration of application of between 1 and 4 seconds, or even 10 seconds.
  • the electrical parameters used generate a fatigue of work, similar to the voluntary fatigue of the muscle, which produces only a weak relaxation if not null. This is the classic framework of electro-stimulation with frequencies below 100 Hz to produce short contractions.
  • the US patent US Patent 3,709,228 describes an apparatus for electro-stimulation of the nerves, and thus of the muscles, of the face of a user, comprising a support resting on the nose and ears and carrying arms deformable that can extend in opposite directions and carrying at their end skin contact electrodes.
  • a first electrode is positioned to stimulate the frontal branch of the facial nerve.
  • a second electrode is positioned to stimulate the maxillary branch of the facial nerve.
  • a third electrode is positioned to stimulate the mandibular branch of the facial nerve. This document does not suggest electrode positioning at the inter-eyebrow gap.
  • the present invention aims to provide an apparatus for obtaining, by the action of an electric current, a loosening of one or more muscles of the upper part of the face, in particular the frontal muscle ( frontalis ), the two muscles eyebrows ( corrugator ) and the pyramidal muscle of the nose ( procerus ).
  • Claims 2 to 12 specify preferred embodiments of the device of Claim 1.
  • the figure 1 schematically represents a front view of the electro-muting device according to a first preferred embodiment of the present invention, placed on the head of a user.
  • Figure 2 represents a rear view of the device of the figure 1 .
  • the figure 3 represents a view from above for the device of the figure 1 .
  • the figure 4 represents a view in section and from above of the front part of the device of the figure 1 .
  • the figure 5 schematically represents a front view (without the electrode) of the electro-muting device according to a second preferred embodiment of the present invention, placed on the head of a user.
  • the figure 6 represents a rear view of the dipositif of the figure 5 , as well as a detailed view of the double electrode placed on its support.
  • the figure 7 represents different views of the electrode of the figure 6 .
  • the innovative principle at the base of the invention is to produce an inhibition of the three aforementioned muscles in the upper part of the face by means of the application of an electric current on only one of these muscles, namely the pyramidal.
  • the specific placement of the electrodes makes it possible, by inhibiting the pyramidal muscle, to obtain reflex relaxation actions on the other muscles of the upper part of the face. It is therefore a device aimed at the opposite effect of that sought in electro-stimulation, since the aim is the relaxation of the muscles and not their contraction.
  • two small electrodes 2 are positioned parallel to each other at the level of the inter-eyebrow space called glabella (glabella), so as to pass the electrical inhibition current through the pyramidal muscle of the nose.
  • the electrodes 2 are supported by a headband 1.
  • These electrodes 2 have essentially a rectangular shape whose size is more or less 25 mm by 5 mm and are spaced apart from each other by a distance of 3 to 15 mm.
  • the current applied to the electrodes 2 consists of electrical pulses known to be able to trigger action potentials (PA) at the level of the motor nerves. These are rectangular pulses with a width between 30 and 100 ⁇ s and an intensity ranging from 0 to 30 mA (3) . The use of this type of pulse leads to less excitation of the pain fibers than the use of longer pulses. But any other type of pulse sufficient to trigger a PA on motor neurons could be used.
  • PA action potentials
  • an essential characteristic of the invention is that the applied current advantageously uses pulses having a frequency greater than 100 Hz, which generates a very rapid electrical fatigue of the pyramidal muscle (4, 5) .
  • pulses having a frequency greater than 100 Hz, which generates a very rapid electrical fatigue of the pyramidal muscle (4, 5) .
  • This pulse frequency being kept constant, in a few tens of seconds, the pyramidal muscle becomes inexcusable, loses its tone and thus relaxes completely (7) .
  • Motoneuron excitation of the pyramidal muscle also produces relaxation of its antagonist muscle - the frontal muscle - via the reciprocal inhibition reflex (8) .
  • the electrical impulses at the level of a muscle excite not only the motoneurons of this muscle but also the proprioceptive afferent fibers of this muscle.
  • the excitation of the latter inhibits the motor neurons of the antagonist muscle (9,10) .
  • the electrodes 2 being located at the level of the internal tendons of the eyebrow muscles, the current excites the afferent nerves of these tendons, that is to say those leaving the Golgi tendon corpuscles. These tendinous afferences being inhibitory of the motor neurons of their muscle, namely the double eyebrow, their excitation by the electric impulses produces a loosening of the muscle (11,12) .
  • the electrical frequencies are higher (at least 120 or 150 Hz) and the duration of application much longer (typically greater than 60 s), as in the patent US Patent 4,957,480 . It thus occurs, not a work fatigue, but a so-called intense electric fatigue ( 4,6 ).
  • the electrical activity, characterized by the rest and action potentials, on the muscle fibers disappears by accumulation of potassium ions (K + ) in extracellular.
  • K + potassium ions
  • the electromechanical coupling of the muscular activity is broken by the disappearance of the electric potential of the fibers. This results in a total suspension of the mechanical activity of the muscle and therefore a complete relaxation, the muscle being in a reversible state of electromechanical stunting. Obtaining this state is also avoided and contraindicated in conventional electro-stimulation. It can only occur through the specific electrical parameters of the present invention. It is observed neither in electro-stimulation, nor during voluntary contractions.
  • the entire system allowing electro-inhibition is included in a single device 1.
  • this one is designed similarly to a spectacle frame that rests on the nose at the front and on the ears at the back thanks to two adequate branches.
  • the electronic circuit 3 and the power supply 4 in the form of batteries are placed in a hollow front part of the device, at the level of hatches 5.
  • the electrodes on the internal and medial face of the front part 6 are configured to position themselves correctly in the inter-eyebrow space when the device is set up on a subject.
  • a "double" electrode 2A has been designed, that is to say in which the two conducting poles 2 are carried by a single structure.
  • this arrangement has the convenience of having to place only one electrode, rather than two, as is usually the case in all conventional electrotherapy techniques.
  • the electrode 2A has a shape and a size adapted to the area to be treated, that is to say which allows to cover the glabella area and to inhibit the pyramidal muscle.
  • the electrode 2A comprises a essentially rectangular piece of fabric 21, the longest side to be positioned substantially vertically, and which optionally has cut corners at its lower part placed on the top of the nose and a rounded upper side placed at the forehead ( figure 7 ).
  • the piece of fabric 21 which constitutes the mechanical support of the electrode is impregnated with two conductive silver zones 2 which pass through the thickness of the fabric.
  • the fabric becomes conductive between its inner face, which is placed on the side of the skin and its outer face, which is placed on the side of the contact pads at the electrical device.
  • the conduction between the electrical apparatus and the electrodes is provided by a cable or a snap-button, the external surface of the electrode being otherwise non-conductive.
  • the outer surfaces of the poles of the electrode are conductive, which allows two conductive pads 25 of the device to come into direct contact with the poles.
  • Optimum conduction between the conductive areas 2 and the skin of the user is provided by two areas of conductive adhesive gel 22 covering said conductive areas on the inner face of the electrode, in contact with the skin.
  • these two zones of conductive gel will extend over the entire length of the piece of fabric and, from the outer lateral edge, over a width sufficient to completely cover the corresponding silver zone 2 ( figure 7 ).
  • An advantageous alternative to silver impregnation is to make two openings in the electrode tissue to allow the pads mentioned above to come into direct contact with the gel.
  • the insulation between the two poles 2 of the electrode 2A is provided by a central zone 23 devoid of self-adhesive conductive gel 22.
  • the electrode 2A is provided with a non-conductive pin-shaped piece 24 to ensure the mechanical engagement of the support device and the electrode 2A and to allow the two contact pads 25 to come exactly on the two conductive outer zones of the electrode.
  • the electronic circuit is located in the central zone of the support device 1. From this circuit, the two blades or contact pads 25 come to be applied on the two conductive outer surfaces of the aforementioned electrode. 2A, that is to say the two areas of the electrode impregnated with conducting silver.
  • the central portion of the housing is recessed and provided with a housing 26 which allows the interlocking "pin” 24 of the electrode.
  • This housing 26 is wide in its lower part and narrow in its upper part, this allowing the user to perform very easily the interlocking between the support device and the electrode.
  • the pin 24 advantageously comprises a short rod terminated by a rounded bulging head which allows it to come to lock in the narrow part of the housing 26 of the support device 1 ( figure 6 ).
  • the fabric support 21 has dimensions of 37 mm ⁇ 22 mm
  • the electrodes have as the dimensions 21 mm x 7 mm
  • the central zone 23 between the electrodes free of self-adhesive gel is 5 mm wide
  • the pin 24 is anchored at a distance of 16.5 mm from the lower edge of the part 2A.
  • the stability of the support device 1 in the form of a spectacle frame is provided by three points, on the one hand the two branches resting on the ears and on the other hand the electrode stuck on the glabella. This is different from a classic eyeglass frame whose third point of stability is provided by the nose saddle or pads that come to rest on the nose.
  • the latter system can not be suitable for the device of the invention because the variations, from one individual to another, the shape and size of the nose do not always allow the contact pads to come to be placed exactly at the level conductive surfaces of the electrode.
  • the device of the invention still has the advantage of being inexpensive, easy to use and brief (typically less than 5 minutes), particularly in user's home and not to induce side effects that are found in injection techniques (allergy, redness, edema, presence of an artificial implant, etc.).
