Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a cathode ray tube and more particularly to the anti-implosion device in the form of a belt metal arranged around the glass slab of such a tube.
Cathode ray tubes, used for example in television receivers, are formed of a glass envelope in which there is a strong vacuum.
This envelope comprises a glass slab composed of a front face surrounded by a skirt substantially perpendicular to this face before. On the internal surface of the front face are arranged networks of phosphors for reproducing a color image when said networks are excited by electron beams from guns arranged inside the tube.
Conventionally the periphery of the slab is surrounded by a metal belt, called an anti-implosion belt intended for to strengthen the mechanical strength of the glass envelope. Indeed, after the evacuation of the glass envelope, mechanical stresses apply on the front and on the skirt under the influence of pressure outside the envelope. In the absence of this anti-implosion belt a shock on the slab can cause the implosion of the tube.
It is known for example from document US6150760 that the anti-implosion belt installed around the front of the tube is constituted a loop in the form of a metal band whose free ends are secured by means of a complementary metal part arranged above these ends and electrically welded point to them.
- it increases the number of parts necessary for the constitution of the belt.
- it uses a lot of consumable material in the form of welding electrode to change frequently
- it consumes a lot of energy
- it locally increases the thickness of the belt which is harmful for the insertion of the tube into the plastic housing which generally marries at most the tube shapes for aesthetic reasons.
- the quality of the weld is not visually verifiable which can induce the implosion of the tube in case of faulty welding.
All of these problems are all the more sensitive as the current trend requiring the front face to be noticeably flat TV manufacturers to benefit from the aesthetic appearance of these tubes desire to be able to design housings in which the tubes fit into the closer to said boxes.
However, it is not possible to reduce the thickness of the anti-implosion belt itself, nor the thickness of the piece arranged above ends of said belt for reasons of resistance mechanical tension to which the belt is subjected when it is place around the tube.
The invention provides a solution to these problems by means of a anti-implosion belt structure to obtain a thickness uniform around the tube it surrounds.
For this, the cathode ray tube according to the invention comprises a glass envelope formed:
- a glass slab having a front face and a peripheral skirt substantially perpendicular to said face
- a funnel-shaped rear part, sealed on the front side at the level of the skirt
characterized in that the ends of said metal belt are joined edge to edge using a laser weld.
- Figure 1 shows a cathode ray tube according to the state of the art.
- FIG. 2 illustrates an embodiment of an anti-implosion belt according to the invention
- Figure 3 illustrates a second embodiment of a belt according to the invention.
- the belt is first heated at high temperature to increase its perimeter
- the heated belt is arranged around the tube and cooling the decrease of its perimeter puts the front of the tube in mechanical compression.
points comme illustré par la figure 1.The belt is usually made from a band
folded
Experiments with edge-to-edge of the belt and welding these ends by contribution of material do not have satisfied, the resulting weld does not support the forces of necessary traction to ensure the nominal mechanical stress that must exercise the belt on the tube, the cohesion of the material at the level of the welding is not sufficient.
According to the invention the use of a laser to ensure the welding edge to edge of the ends of the belt allows without adding material to obtain the necessary mechanical resistance to sustainably resist say pulling forces.
According to one embodiment of the invention, illustrated by FIG.
the
De manière préférentielle, la soudure s'effectue des deux cotés opposées de la ceinture : du coté destiné à venir au contact du tube et du coté opposé à celui-ci.Preferably, the welding takes place on both sides opposite of the belt: the side intended to come into contact with the tube and the side opposite to this one.
Laser welding makes it possible to obtain in the welded zone the same tensile strength than a seamless waistband portion because the Laser welding makes it possible to precisely control the energy delivered to areas to be welded and thus to obtain at the level of the weld a perfect cohesion of the material.
In an alternative embodiment, illustrated in FIG.
While it was impossible to check the quality of the weld by electrical resistance according to the state of the art, laser welding can be visually inspected, which can be automated, for example using a video camera on the production line.
In addition, laser welding is more energy efficient and it makes it possible to obtain a reduction in the manufacturing time of the equipped tube of such a belt. Indeed the cooling time of such a belt is lower than belts according to the state of the art because of the less amount of material used to make said belt.
The embodiments described above are not limiting. The anti-implosion belt may for example be made from two separate metal halves, the ends of these two halves being welded two by two by laser welding.
