Description

The present invention relates to packaging, especially cardboard.

The cardboard sheets generally used for packaging can be characterized by their weight and the nature of their constituents.

Par « feuille de carton », on désigne une feuille dont le grammage est supérieur à 100g/m2, notamment supérieur ou égal à 190 g/m2, voire supérieur à 200 g/m2."Cardboard sheet" denotes a sheet whose grammage is greater than 100 g / m 2 , especially greater than or equal to 190 g / m 2 , or even greater than 200 g / m 2 .

There are cartons containing conifers, or called cardboard boxes, and cardboards made from deciduous trees, also called cellulose boards.

To make the pulp of the wooden boards , the bark of the conifers are mechanically chopped ( mechanical pulping ), which leads to rather long fibers.

Wood cartons generally have at least 80% by weight of coniferous fibers and are yellowish. These fibers contain lignin which darkens under the effect of ultraviolet radiation.

To improve the surface appearance, printability or varnishing and to increase the whiteness, the cartons can be coated.

The term "coated cardboard sheet" thus refers to a sheet of cardboard that has a surface coating on one or both sides.

The yellowing of lignin-rich cardboard sheets under the effect of visible light and especially ultraviolet radiation is a very old problem that the manufacturers are trying to solve, since this yellowing greatly reduces the appeal of the packaging for the consumer.

By "visible light" is meant light of wavelength between 400 and 800 nm and "ultraviolet light" that of wavelength between 280 and 400 nm.

To avoid the problem of lignin-related yellowing or to minimize lignin, it is possible to use cellulose cartons which are less rich in lignin since they generally contain less than 15% by weight of coniferous fibers. .

However, these cartons that use less raw material in some parts of the world and require chemical pulping are usually more expensive than cartons.

In addition, the mechanical rigidity of these cartons is generally less good than that of wood cartons, so that the basis weight must be higher at equal stiffness, which makes the use of cellulose boards reserved for expensive products.

It is known to retard the yellowing of lignin-rich cartons by incorporating into the surface coating an additive based on carbon black, iron oxide or zinc, but this affects the whiteness of the coating and / or can harm to food compatibility.

In addition, the lignin eventually migrates into the surface coating and yellowing is not permanently prevented.

It is also known to laminate a polymeric film containing titanium dioxide, but this modifies the appearance and the characteristics to the touch of the cardboard sheet and may make it more difficult to recyclability thereof.

In addition, the inks used to print the packages exist in several grades, which are more or less expensive depending on their resistance to ultraviolet. UV-resistant grades are preferentially used unless the product is intended to be sold quickly.

It is also known to incorporate brighteners in the cardboard sheets, in order to increase the whiteness, but these brighteners are sensitive to ultraviolet and effectiveness and limited in time.

There is a need to reduce the cost of packaging without the reduction being to the detriment of the mechanical properties of the packaging or its appearance over time, especially under the effect of ultraviolet radiation.

According to the invention, the packaging comprises a sheet of cardboard covered externally with a varnish comprising at least one additive intended to reduce the degradation of the packaging under the effect of light, for example the yellowing of the sheet under the light. effect of light and / or alteration of an underlying impression.

Un tel matériau composite comporte par exemple encore des fibres végétales, notamment plus de 40 % en masse, mieux 50 % ou plus encore, ces fibres végétales étant par exemple mélangées à des fibres en matière synthétique."Cardboard sheet" denotes in the description and the claims a sheet of cardboard or a sheet of a similar material, composite or not, having substantially the same mechanical behavior as the cardboard. Such a composite material comprises, for example, vegetable fibers, in particular more than 40% by weight, better still 50% or more, these vegetable fibers being for example mixed with fibers made of synthetic material.

The invention makes it possible to produce a package with a cardboard sheet rich in lignin while effectively retarding the yellowing thereof.

The invention thus makes it possible to use stiffer wood cartons than cellulose cartons and to reduce the thickness of the sheet of cardboard of equal rigidity, which reduces the quantity of material used.

In addition, the presence of the varnish makes it possible to use underlying inks that are less resistant to ultraviolet, and therefore less expensive.

The invention thus allows significant savings on the cost of cardboard packaging.

The invention is advantageously applied to cardboard sheets comprising for example more than 70%, better 80%, by weight of coniferous fibers, rich in lignin.

The invention also makes it possible to protect the package without this protection requiring, if necessary, modifying the composition or the thickness of a possible surface coating of the sheet, which makes it possible to affect less, if not to not affect, its printability and mechanical characteristics, including stiffness or compressive strength.

Thus, existing processes and machines used for the manufacture of packaging or the packaging of products in such packaging can be retained.

The invention does not apply exclusively to coated cardboard sheets but also relates to uncoated cardboard sheets.

In the case where the invention is applied to coated cardboard sheets, the surface coating may in particular be white and contain for example at least one optical brightener, which may be for example in a proportion of between 0.05 and 0.5 % by weight in the surface coating, better in a proportion of between 0.1 and 0.3%.

In an exemplary implementation of the invention, the surface coating comprises calcium carbonate and clay substantially in the 60/40 weight ratio.

The surface coating may also comprise a binder, especially starch, in order to improve its cohesion.

The presence of calcium carbonate, which may in particular comprise fine spheroidal grains, may be useful for surface smoothness.

The presence of clay, especially kaolin, which may have coarse prismatic grains, may be useful in achieving the desired density for the surface coating.

The thickness of the varnish may for example be between 2 and 20 μm, better still between 3 and 12 μm, the total thickness of the cardboard sheet being, for example, between 100 and 1000 μm, and preferably between 300 and 500 μm. .

The additive (s) may be present in a total mass proportion of additives of between 0.5 and 10% in the varnish, for example in a proportion of between 1 and 6%.

In this case, the additive (s) intended to combat the effects of the light are chosen to be compatible with such a varnish. In particular, it is preferable that the varnish does not comprise when it is crosslinkable under the action of ultraviolet radiation free radical sensors such as hindered amines or amines HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizer is in French amine blocked stabilizing to light).

The varnish, when it is crosslinkable under the action of UV radiation, can comprise, for example, two ultraviolet absorbers whose absorption spectra are chosen so as to provide a range of wavelengths in which absorption is less, and the lamp used to cause the polymerization is then chosen to emit in this range.

This makes it possible to prevent the ultraviolet absorbers present in the varnish from fulfilling their protective function, without unduly hindering the polymerization of the varnish.

The varnish may include a violet dye, which tends to increase the whiteness of the cardboard sheet.

The sheet may be covered for example by about 3 to 10 g / m 2 of varnish before drying, including about 6 g / m 2 of varnish.

The present document further describes a method of manufacturing a package comprising a sheet of cardboard or the like, wherein a varnish is applied to the sheet containing at least one additive intended to reduce the degradation of the package under the effect of the light.

This additive may be a UV absorber compound and / or free radical scavenger.

The varnish can be applied by various techniques, including offset, heliography, flexography or screen printing.

The sheet can be printed before or after the application of the varnish.

Preferably, the sheet is printed before the deposition of the varnish, which makes it possible to protect the ink from ultraviolet rays and thus to use less expensive inks.

This document further describes a sheet of cardboard having an impression of at least one ink of low resistance to ultraviolet, covered with a varnish comprising at least one ultraviolet absorber and / or free radical sensor, in particular one of those mentioned above.

The present document also describes an ultraviolet radiation curable varnish, comprising at least two ultraviolet absorbers chosen so as to have sufficiently offset absorption spectra to provide a range of wavelengths between them. the absorption is less, in view of the irradiation in this range during the crosslinking of the varnish.

The absorption peaks of the two additives are, for example, shifted by more than 40 nm and form between them a valley whose trough corresponds, for example, to an absorption which is less than 30% less than the maximum absorption defined by one of the peaks. .

The varnish may further comprise a violet dye.

The emission spectrum of the source may be centered for example on 310-330 nm approximately.

The present document further describes a sheet of cardboard coated with a varnish comprising at least one UV absorber additive and / or free radical scavenger.

The invention will be better understood on reading the following detailed description, non-limiting examples of implementation thereof, and on examining the appended drawing, in which:
  • the figure 1 shows schematically, in perspective, an example of packaging made by folding a sheet of cardboard or the like coated with a varnish according to the invention,
  • the Figures 2 to 4 are schematic and partial sections of a coated cardboard sheet illustrating various embodiments of the invention, and
  • the figure 5 schematically shows the absorption as a function of the wavelength for an example of varnish that can be used.

The invention applies to all types of packaging made by folding, gluing and / or rolling of one or more sheets of cardboard or the like, and in particular to boxes for containing containers containing cosmetic or care products.

Such a box may have for example a parallelepipedal general shape as illustrated in FIG. figure 1 with at one end at least one folding tongue.

Of course, the invention is not limited to a particular form of packaging and can be made with a sheet of cardboard or the like coated with a varnish according to the invention packaging having very different shapes, and intended for example to contain cigarettes or other objects.

The packaging may include only the sheet of cardboard or the like and the varnish which covers it on the outside and exposed side of the packaging, so as to facilitate its recyclability. The sheet of cardboard or the like may in particular be devoid of laminated polymer film.

The sheet used may comprise a base 1, preferably comprising coniferous fibers, thus containing lignin, and at least on the outside of the package a surface coating 2 in the case where the sheet is a sheet of cardboard coated . When the sheet comprises cellulosic fibers, these may come from the Aspen tree, for example.

The surface coating 2, whose thickness is for example between 20 and 30 microns, can improve the printability and varnishing characteristics of the cardboard sheet and improve its whiteness.

The coating layer 2 comprises for example calcium carbonate and clay, especially kaolin, in a mass ratio compatible with the manufacturing processes used, for example 60/40.

The surface coating 2 may be devoid of light-protecting compounds such as carbon black or an oxide of iron or zinc.

The surface coating 2 may comprise at least one optical brightener, for example in a mass proportion of between 0.05 and 0.5%, better still 0.1 and 0.3%.

According to the invention, the cardboard sheet is covered on the outside of the package by a layer of varnish 3, the latter comprising at least one compound intended to protect the sheet from the effects of light, in particular from yellowing due to visible and / or ultraviolet light, in particular wavelengths between 290 and 460 nm.

The varnish 3, which can be colorless and does not substantially modify the color of the underlying sheet, comprises for example at least one UV absorber compound and / or a free radical scavenging compound.

The varnish 3 can be applied by various known techniques, for example heliography, flexography, screen printing or offset.

De préférence, l'épaisseur déposée sera comprise entre 3 et 12 µm.The thickness of varnish 3 deposited may depend on the deposition technique used, from about 2 μm for the offset to about 20 μm for flexography. Preferably, the thickness deposited will be between 3 and 12 microns.

The varnish 3 is preferably applied after the printing of a decoration 4 on the sheet, as illustrated in FIG. figure 3 , but could alternatively be applied prior to the application of the decor 4, as illustrated in FIG. figure 4 .

When the varnish 3 is applied after the printing of a decoration 4 on the sheet, the varnish 3 can usefully protect the inks of the decorative layer 4 by a color change.

The varnish 3 then makes it possible to use light-sensitive inks, such as, for example, fluorescent inks which are unstable or sensitive to the phenomenon of metamerism.

Many additives can be incorporated in the varnish 3 in order to obtain the desired protective function.

This or these additives are in a concentration that may depend on their effectiveness, the latter being proportional to the concentration and thickness of the varnish layer according to BEER LAMBERT's law. The layer of varnish 3 may for example absorb light of wavelengths between 290 and 460 nm in a large proportion, so for example to increase by at least 50%, better to double, the duration of exposure to light leading to the same effects of degradation of the package in its absence.

Typiquement, la proportion d'additif(s) pourra être comprise entre 0,5 et 10 % en masse dans le vernis 3, et mieux entre 1 et 6 %, par exemple entre 3 et 6 %.Typically, the proportion of additive (s) may be between 0.5 and 10% by weight in the varnish 3, and better between 1 and 6%, for example between 3 and 6%.

As additives that may be used, mention may be made especially of those sold by the companies GREAT LAKES and CIBA-GEIGY, and in particular derivatives of the benzotriazole family.

Such derivatives may be heterocycles of cyclo-benzene type, on which a carbon atom has been replaced.

Figure imgb0003
By way of example of a UV absorber compound, mention may be made of that of formula
Figure imgb0003

Figure imgb0004
As an example of a free radical scavenger, mention may be made of that of formula
Figure imgb0004

The free radical sensor (s) can stabilize the varnish and prevent its own yellowing.

The nature of the varnish used may depend on the selected printing process and drying method.

Preferably, varnish offsets fat which yell naturally by oxidation will be avoided.

It is possible to use a water-based, acrylic-type varnish supplemented with a UV absorber and / or a free radical scavenger, for example added with the two compounds whose formulas have been given above.

It is also possible to use a crosslinkable varnish under the action of ultraviolet radiation, preferably avoiding the inclusion of hindered amines, which would be partially annihilated by the crosslinking of the varnish.

When an ultraviolet-curable varnish is used, this varnish comprises, for example, at least two UV absorbers, for example each at a concentration of less than 3% by weight, better than or equal to 2%. whose absorption spectra are chosen so as to provide a range of wavelengths where the additives absorb less and allow a UV source to cause the crosslinking of the varnish.

L'un des additifs est par exemple à une concentration de 2 % et l'autre de 1 %, de manière à avoir une concentration totale inférieure ou égale à 3 %.One of the additives is for example at a concentration of 2% and the other of 1%, so as to have a total concentration of less than or equal to 3%.

For example, there is shown in the figure 5 the absorption spectrum of a varnish (for a path of 1 cm after dilution in toluene at 20 mg / l) comprising two additives whose absorption spectra have respective peaks 10 and 11 between them a valley whose background 12 is for example centered on an emission wavelength of the source used to crosslink the varnish, for example 320 nm.

Figure imgb0005
Figure imgb0006
UV absorbers are for example
an aromatic triazine derivative such as that marketed by CIBA under the name TINUVIN 400, of general formula:
Figure imgb0005
and a benzophenine derivative such as for example that marketed by CIBA under the reference CGL 477, of general formula:
Figure imgb0006

The minimum absorption observed in the bottom 12 of the valley is, for example, less than 30% less than the maximum absorption A max observed for one of the peaks 10 and 11.

The varnish may comprise a violet dye in order to increase the whiteness of the sheet, this dye being for example at a concentration of less than or equal to 1%.

To highlight the protective effect against yellowing, conferred by a varnish 3 according to the invention, it is possible to carry out a test consisting in depositing a predefined quantity, for example 6 g / m 2 , of varnish wet water on a sheet of cardboard with a total thickness of 350 μm, and then expose the sheet thus covered for a predefined period to a mercury vapor lamp. The concentration of additives in the varnish can for example reach 5% by weight. An "Anilox" cylinder with a volume of at least 13 cm 3 can be used to apply the varnish.

In the absence of varnish, the measured yellowing can for example reach on the Wool scale the value 3. In the presence of the varnish, the yellowing measured can pass to a value at least equal to 4, which highlights the resistance greater yellowing of the cardboard sheet coated with varnish. The change from value 3 to 4 corresponds to a doubling of the duration of the light stability.

In the case where the varnish is a UV-crosslinkable varnish, an increase in whiteness can be observed over time linked to a curing of the varnish continuing over time, when the exposure to the artificial source to cause the polymerization n was not sufficient to polymerize the varnish as much as possible.

Of course, the invention is not limited to the examples which have just been given and it may in particular use other additives than those mentioned.

It is also possible to use cardboard sheets having surface coatings of other composition, or even sheets of cardboard without surface coating.

Throughout the description, including the claims, the phrase "having one" should be understood as being synonymous with "having at least one" unless otherwise specified.

By "between", it must be understood inclusive, unless otherwise specified.
