Definitions
- the invention relates to a fuel system for an internal combustion engine, with a reservoir for the fuel, with a fuel pump, which promotes from the reservoir into a pressure range, with a valve device which opens depending on the pressure in the pressure range and has at least a first outlet, through the fuel can be derived from the pressure range, and the opening pressure depends on a reference pressure, and with a return line through which funded, but unused fuel flows back into the reservoir and drives an auxiliary pumping device.
- a fuel system of the type mentioned is from the DE 101 00 700 C1 known.
- an electric fuel pump promotes the fuel from a reservoir a driven by the internal combustion engine high-pressure fuel pump. From there, the fuel is conveyed under high pressure on to a fuel rail ("rail"), to which several injectors are connected. These inject the fuel directly into their respective associated combustion chamber.
- a fuel rail (rail)
- the injectors are supplied with more fuel than they inject into the combustion chamber.
- the unused fuel is returned via a return line in the reservoir and is there to operate a suction jet pump.
- Object of the present invention is to develop a fuel system of the type mentioned so that it operates reliably throughout the operating range of the engine and allows the most dynamic and accurate control of the flow through the fuel high-pressure pump.
- valve device is designed so that the reference pressure is the pressure in the reservoir, and that the first outlet of the valve device is connected to the return line.
- a, in absolute terms, comparatively constant pressure in the pressure range can be realized.
- the pressure in the reservoir is used as the reference pressure for the valve device with which fuel can be discharged from the pressure range. This corresponds essentially to the ambient pressure, which is subject to only slight fluctuations.
- the fuel system according to the invention also has a further advantage: Because the first outlet of the valve device is connected to the return line, a reliable operation of the auxiliary pump device is ensured in all operating situations of the fuel system. In particular, in the overrun and low load operation of the engine flows in the return line little or no fuel from the injectors to the reservoir back, which could jeopardize the operation of the auxiliary pumping device.
- the valve device comprises a valve body which is acted upon on one side by the pressure in the pressure region and on the other side by the pressure in the reservoir, and which releases the first outlet in the course of its opening movement.
- a valve device can be built very simply in the form of a slide valve, so that the fuel system according to the invention is inexpensive.
- valve device has a second outlet which is connected directly to the reservoir.
- the opening pressure for the second outlet is higher than that for the first outlet, preferably approximately 0.2 bar higher than that for the first outlet.
- the valve device is designed as a "cascade valve" which ensures a relatively constant supply to the auxiliary pump device.
- the production of the fuel system according to the invention is simplified if the fuel pump and the valve device are part of a structural unit.
- the structure is further simplified by the assembly is arranged in the reservoir, since in this case can be dispensed with additional lines.
- a fuel system carries the overall reference numeral 10. It includes a tank unit 12, a high-pressure fuel pump 14 and a fuel rail 16 ("rail").
- the tank unit 12 in turn comprises a reservoir 18, is stored in the fuel 20.
- an electric fuel pump 24 is arranged, which via a filter 26 fuel from the swirl pot 22 via a check valve 28 promotes a trained as a pressure line pressure region 30.
- the pressure region 30 is connected to a port 32 of a valve device 34.
- the pressure region 30 leads via a further filter 36 to the high-pressure fuel pump 14.
- This is executed in the present embodiment as a 3-cylinder radial piston pump and is driven directly by an internal combustion engine, not shown.
- the delivery rate of the high pressure fuel pump 14 is adjusted by a metering valve 38.
- the outlet of the metering valve 38 is connected on the one hand with inlet valves (without reference numeral) of the individual delivery chambers of the high-pressure fuel pump 14 and on the other hand via a zero-delivery throttle 40 with a return line 42.
- the fuel rail 16 is fed by the high pressure fuel pump 14. In it the fuel is stored under high pressure.
- a plurality of injectors are connected, of which in FIG. 1 only one is shown by reference numeral 44.
- the injectors 44 inject the fuel directly into a respective associated combustion chamber (not shown).
- the injector 44 is also connected to the return line 42.
- an optional pressure control valve 46 is connected to this return line 42.
- the return line 42 leads back to the reservoir 18.
- two suction jet pumps 48a and 48b are fed in the present embodiment, which constitute an additional pumping device, in the edge and especially in the bottom regions of the reservoir 18th are arranged and promote the fuel from these areas in the swirl pot 22.
- an outlet 50 of the valve device 34 is connected to the return line 42.
- the valve device 34 is designed as a slide valve. It comprises a piston 52, which is slidably received in a housing 54. One side of the piston 52 is acted upon via the terminal 32 with that pressure which prevails in the pressure region 30. The other side of the piston 52 is acted upon via an opening 56 with that pressure which prevails in the reservoir 18.
- the outlet 50 is arranged radially in the housing 54 and is covered by the piston 52 in the unpressurized state. In this position, the piston 52 is pressed by a spring 58.
- fuel system 10 operates as follows:
- the electric fuel pump 24 is driven at a constant power. Accordingly, the delivery rate of the electric fuel pump 24 is substantially constant.
- the high pressure fuel pump 14 must deliver a comparatively large amount of fuel into the fuel rail 16, thereby allowing the metering valve 38 to be opened.
- the injectors 44 although a relatively large amount of fuel injected into their respective associated combustion chamber, via the return line 42 still flows from the injectors 44 a comparatively large amount of fuel to the reservoir 18 back. There drives this fuel to the ejector pumps 48 a and 48 b, which promote the fuel present in the bottom region of the reservoir 18 in the swirl pot 22, where it can be sucked back by the electric fuel pump 24 and conveyed to the high-pressure fuel pump 14.
- the electric fuel pump 24 is designed so that even at the maximum load of the internal combustion engine, the amount of fuel delivered by the electric fuel pump 24 is higher than the amount of fuel compressed by the high-pressure fuel pump 14 and conveyed to the fuel rail 16. In the pressure range 30, therefore, a certain elevated pressure sets in, which is usually between 4.5 and 5.2 bar. This pressure is determined by the design of the valve device 34:
- the delivery rate of the high-pressure fuel pump 14 can be set exactly and quickly by a pilot control of the metering valve 38.
- the balancing of control fluctuations of the pressure in the fuel rail 16 is therefore possible quickly and reliably.
- valve device 34 which is designed as a "cascade overflow".
- This comprises a second outlet 60 which, viewed in the opening direction of the piston 52, is arranged behind the first outlet 50 and leads into the surge pot 22 of the storage container 18.
- the axial distance of the two outlets 50 and 60 is such that the second outlet 60 is released from the piston 52 at a pressure in the pressure range 30 that is approximately 0.2 bar above the pressure at which the first outlet 50 is released.
- FIG. 5 the flow rate QF is plotted against the speed N of the internal combustion engine, which is obtained at the level of the filter 36, that is to say at the inlet of the high-pressure fuel pump 14.
- the upper dashed curve shows the maximum in previous fuel systems and the lower dashed curve the minimum flow rate obtained in previous fuel systems. It can be seen that this flow rate is almost constant above the speed N and that the minimum and maximum values differ significantly.
- the two solid lines in FIG. 5 be with the fuel systems 10 of FIGS. 1 to 4 receive. It can be seen that at a low rotational speed N, a significantly lower fuel quantity QF is obtained than at a high rotational speed N at the filter 36. This is due to the fact that at low speed N of the high-pressure fuel pump 14 only little fuel is retrieved and thus a significant proportion of funded by the electric fuel pump 24 fuel flows back through the valve means 34 into the reservoir 18.
- FIG. 6 the pressure PR in the return line 42 in the area of the suction jet pumps 48a and 48b is plotted against the speed N of the internal combustion engine.
- the maximum and minimum values obtained in the fuel system 10 are the FIGS. 1 and 2 , by solid lines that of the fuel system 10 of Figures 3 and 4 shown. Dashed lines show the corresponding values in previous fuel systems. It can be seen that the pressure in the fuel systems 10 of FIGS. 1 to 4 even at low speeds is sufficiently high and overall over the speed is relatively constant.
- FIG. 7 the pressure PT in the return line 42 in the area of the suction jet pumps 48a and 48b is plotted against the speed N of the internal combustion engine.
- the dotted lines again correspond to the maximum and minimum values, which in the in the FIGS. 1 and 2 In the embodiment shown, the solid curves are obtained with the fuel system incorporated in the Figures 3 and 4 is shown. It can be seen that the pressure in the return line 42 in the region of the suction jet pumps 48a and 48b in the fuel system 10 of the Figures 3 and 4 is relatively constant.
- FIG. 8 is the pressure PF applied in the pressure range 30 above the speed N of the internal combustion engine.
- the dashed curves correspond to the maximum and minimum values in previous fuel systems, the dotted curves in a fuel system according to the FIGS. 1 and 2 , and the solid curves correspond to the values in a fuel system according to Figures 3 and 4 , It can be seen that in the fuel systems of FIGS. 1 to 4 the maximum and minimum values are comparatively close to each other and that the maximum values are significantly lower than in previous fuel systems. Especially the latter reduces the load on the electric fuel pump 24th
- FIG. 9 another embodiment of a fuel system 10 is shown. Again, that applies Elements and regions which have equivalent functions to elements and regions of the preceding embodiments bear the same reference numerals.
- a suction jet pump 48 is not fed by the return line 42, but only via an additional return line 62 which is connected to the outlet 50 of the valve device 34.
- the valve device 34 is designed so that its opening pressure does not depend on the pressure in the reservoir 18, but on the pressure of the spring 58.
- FIG. 10 A further modified embodiment of a fuel system 10 is shown in FIG. 10 shown. Again, the above applies with respect to functionally equivalent elements and areas.
- the outlet 50 of the valve device 34 is connected to the return line 42, the opening pressure of the valve device 34 depends in contrast to the embodiments of FIGS. 1 to 4 however, essentially from the pressure in this return line 42.

The invention relates to a fuel system for an internal combustion engine, with a reservoir for the fuel, with a fuel pump, which promotes from the reservoir into a pressure range, with a valve device which opens depending on the pressure in the pressure range and has at least a first outlet, through the fuel can be derived from the pressure range, and the opening pressure depends on a reference pressure, and with a return line through which funded, but unused fuel flows back into the reservoir and drives an auxiliary pumping device.

The injectors are supplied with more fuel than they inject into the combustion chamber. The unused fuel is returned via a return line in the reservoir and is there to operate a suction jet pump.
Object of the present invention is to develop a fuel system of the type mentioned so that it operates reliably throughout the operating range of the engine and allows the most dynamic and accurate control of the flow through the fuel high-pressure pump.
This object is achieved in a fuel system of the type mentioned above in that the valve device is designed so that the reference pressure is the pressure in the reservoir, and that the first outlet of the valve device is connected to the return line.
In the fuel system according to the invention, a, in absolute terms, comparatively constant pressure in the pressure range can be realized. This in turn means that the flow rate of a high pressure fuel pump, which is fed from the pressure range, can be adjusted very accurately and with high dynamics. With that you can Deviations of the pressure from a desired value in a fuel rail ("rail"), in which promotes such a high-pressure fuel pump, are corrected very quickly with the aid of an electronic pilot control.
The basis for this is the fact that the pressure in the reservoir is used as the reference pressure for the valve device with which fuel can be discharged from the pressure range. This corresponds essentially to the ambient pressure, which is subject to only slight fluctuations.
However, the fuel system according to the invention also has a further advantage: Because the first outlet of the valve device is connected to the return line, a reliable operation of the auxiliary pump device is ensured in all operating situations of the fuel system. In particular, in the overrun and low load operation of the engine flows in the return line little or no fuel from the injectors to the reservoir back, which could jeopardize the operation of the auxiliary pumping device.
The reason for this is that in these operating situations of the internal combustion engine, the fuel pump, which promotes from the reservoir in the pressure range, working normally, whereas a downstream high-pressure fuel pump from the pressure range only little or no fuel. Ultimately, this leads to the fact that only a small amount of fuel flows back from the injectors of the internal combustion engine via the return line to the reservoir, but at the same time relatively much fuel is discharged through the valve device from the pressure range. This fuel quantity is used in the invention to drive the auxiliary pumping device, for example one or more suction jet pumps. Such an auxiliary pumping device serves, for example, to supply the fuel to the fuel pump in a surge pot of the storage container.
Advantageous developments of the invention are specified in subclaims.
First, it is proposed that the valve device comprises a valve body which is acted upon on one side by the pressure in the pressure region and on the other side by the pressure in the reservoir, and which releases the first outlet in the course of its opening movement. Such a valve device can be built very simply in the form of a slide valve, so that the fuel system according to the invention is inexpensive.
It is particularly advantageous if the valve device has a second outlet which is connected directly to the reservoir. By such a valve device is avoided that the auxiliary pumping device is fed with too much fuel, which would lead to an undesirably high pressure in the return line.
In a further development, it is again proposed that the opening pressure for the second outlet is higher than that for the first outlet, preferably approximately 0.2 bar higher than that for the first outlet. In this case, the valve device is designed as a "cascade valve" which ensures a relatively constant supply to the auxiliary pump device.
The production of the fuel system according to the invention is simplified if the fuel pump and the valve device are part of a structural unit.
The structure is further simplified by the assembly is arranged in the reservoir, since in this case can be dispensed with additional lines.

The
The
The
This is designed such that the
Independently of the operating state of the internal combustion engine or of the
Accordingly, the delivery rate of the high-
In overrun or at very low load of the internal combustion engine is injected by the
However, since the

This results in the operation of the
