Abstract

A valve block (1) for a dosing device, with an arrangement of piston pipettes (2) or other dosing means, comprises, on the one side thereof, a pattern of openings (15) which may be placed on the arrangement of piston pipettes (2) and, on the opposite side thereof, a second opening (16) corresponding to each first opening (15). The valve block (1) further comprises a number of channel systems (20), each with a main connector (23). The valve block essentially comprises a number of plates (10, 11, 12, 13), arranged in a stack. All plates have through holes (14), arranged in the pattern of the first holes (15). At least a part of the plates (11, 12, 13) additionally comprises a channel system (20) with channels (21), connected to the main connector (23), whereby said channels (21) form a pattern which matches the pattern of the through holes (14) and is laterally displaced relative thereto. In order to optionally connect the first openings (15) to the corresponding second opening (16) or to a selected channel system (20), said plates (11, 12, 13) with the channel system are optionally laterally displaced.

Description

VENTILBLOCK VALVE BLOCK
The invention is in the field of microanalysis and relates to a valve block according to the preamble of the independent claim. The valve block can be used, for example, in a metering device, with which a large number of small quantities of liquid can be handled in parallel, with which, for example, small quantities of liquids can be simultaneously metered into a plurality of cavities on a test plate or can also be removed from the cavities.
Such a metering device is described in the patent EP-0363450 (or US-5193403, Bürgisser). It has a plurality of piston pipettes or similar dosing means which are equipped for the dosed suction or ejection of liquid through a distal end. Furthermore, the device has a valve plate, one surface of which is directed against the distal ends of the piston pipettes and is pressed against them, for example, by means of spring force.
The valve plate has a pattern of through openings which is adapted to the arrangement of the piston pipettes in such a way that a distal end of the pipette can be aligned with a through opening. On the other side of the valve plate, hollow metering tips advantageously adjoin the mouths of the through openings. Furthermore, the valve plate has two channel systems, each of which has a main connection and a plurality of orifices connected to the main connection by channels at the end facing the distal pipette ends. th side of the valve plate. The mouths of each channel system in turn form a pattern that is adapted to the pipette arrangement. For example, one of the duct systems is connected to a liquid source via the main connection and the other to a drain.
By moving the pipette arrangement relative to the valve plate, the distal ends of the piston pipettes are optionally connected to the through openings or to the orifices of one or the other of the channel systems, which enables a multitude of metering functions.
The dosing device briefly described above is simple and robust and can be operated at satisfactory speeds. However, since orifices must be provided for each channel system on the surface of the valve plate directed against the piston pipettes and must be accommodated within a grid determined by the through openings, the number of possible channel systems for a given grid of the through openings is limited. The same limitation also applies to the valve plate for manufacturing reasons, because the valve plate is essentially made from one piece.
However, if, for example, a larger number of channel systems are to be made available for connection to different liquid sources, it becomes necessary for the device described above to increase the distances between the through openings in the valve plate and thus to make the pipette arrangement coarser Grid to use. However, this means that the cavities of the same test plates can no longer all be operated in parallel, which leads to an undesirable increase in the time required for operation. The object of the invention is now to create a valve block for a metering device, as briefly described above, the valve block should be easy to manufacture regardless of the number of channel systems, the valve block should also be easy to implement with a small pitch and the grid dimension in this valve block should in no way limit the possible number of channel systems.
This object is achieved by the valve block as defined in the claims.
The valve block according to the invention is modularly composed of plates. The valve block has a connection plate and a plurality of preferably identical channel plates, each of which represents one of the channel systems. The plates are arranged in a stack adjacent to one another and are displaceable to a limited extent. The connection plate is directed against the distal ends of an arrangement of piston pipettes or other dosing means and has a plurality of through openings aligned with these distal ends. The channel plates also have through openings, the through openings of the connection plate and the channel plates being able to be aligned with one another, that is to say all are arranged in the same grid. Furthermore, each channel plate has a channel system that is open at least to one plate side, which is matched to the grid of the through openings, but is laterally displaced relative to this. The duct system advantageously has at least one main connection on the narrow side of the plate.
The channel plates are displaceable in relation to each other and relative to the connection plate in the plate stack in such a way that each channel plate can have essentially two positions: a first position in which its through openings face the outgoing openings of the connection plate are aligned, and a second position in which their channel system is aligned with the through openings of the connection plate.
By appropriately positioning the channel plates, it is very easy to either connect the distal ends of the piston pipettes to the dosing tips on the other side of the valve block, or alternatively to the channel system of one of the channel plates or its main connection. As is still to be shown, it is sufficient for the connection of the distal pipette ends to the main connection of a predetermined channel plate, to bring this predetermined channel plate into the second position and to leave all other channel plates in the first position.
The connection plate and the channel plates of the valve block according to the invention consist of a material whose surfaces (if appropriate processed accordingly) can seal against one another on the one hand and can still be moved against one another in a sealing manner. Furthermore, the material should of course not be attacked by the liquids used. It is known from valve technology, in particular from the widespread single-lever mixers, that ceramic materials are advantageously used for such applications.
Dabei zeigen:The valve block according to the invention is described in more detail with reference to the following figures. Show:
Figuren 1 bis 3 eine beispielhafte Ausführungsform des erfindungsgemässen Ventilblocks im Schnitt mit verschiedenen Positionen von Kanalplatten;Figures 1 to 3 an exemplary embodiment of the valve block according to the invention in section with different positions of channel plates;
Figur 4 eine Draufsicht auf die Anschlussplatte einer beispielhaften Ausführungsform des erfindungsgemässen Ventilblocks; Figur 5 eine Draufsicht auf eine Kanalplatte derselben Ausführungsform des erfindungsgemässen Ventilblocks;FIG. 4 shows a top view of the connection plate of an exemplary embodiment of the valve block according to the invention; Figure 5 is a plan view of a channel plate of the same embodiment of the valve block according to the invention;
Figur 6 ein Detail der Kanäle der Kanalplatte gemäss Figur 5.FIG. 6 shows a detail of the channels of the channel plate according to FIG. 5.
The metering device shows a valve block 1 according to the invention, an arrangement of metering means (e.g. piston pipettes 2) arranged on one side of the valve block and an arrangement of metering tips 3 arranged on the opposite side of the valve block. The valve block has a connecting plate 10 and a first, second and third (outermost) channel plate 11, 12 and 13 adjoining the connecting plate 10, the plates being held together in a stack by means of suitable means (not shown) in such a way that the connection plate 10 forms one end face of the stack and the outermost channel plate 13 the other.
The connection plate 10 and the channel plates 11, 12 and 13 have the same through-openings 14, which are advantageously arranged in a regular pattern, which pattern is adapted to the arrangement of the piston pipettes. On the end faces of the plate stack, that is to say on the connecting plate 10 or the last channel plate 13, these through openings form first orifices 15 and second orifices 16 to which, with suitable means, the piston pipettes 2 or other suitable dosing means or the dosing tips or other suitable connecting means are connected.
In addition to the pattern of the through openings, the channel plates have a channel system 20. This is designed such that there are all openings of an opening arranged in the same pattern with at least one main connection connects, but it is laterally shifted from the pattern of the through openings. If the through openings are arranged, for example, in straight rows, the channels of the channel system run parallel to these rows and at a constant distance therefrom. Furthermore, collecting channels are advantageously provided outside the pattern of openings and connect the channels to the at least one main connection.
Figure 1 shows such channels 21 arranged between rows of through openings in section. A not visible, parallel to the section plane collecting channel 22 is indicated by broken lines. A main connection 23 is indicated in the same way. The channels 21 are arranged, for example, centrally between the rows of through openings 14, so that a lateral displacement of two adjacent plates by half the grid size means switching between the position with aligned through openings and a position with channels aligned with through openings.
The channel systems 20 of the channel plates 11, 12 and 13 according to FIG. 1 have a depth that is smaller than the plate thickness (trough-shaped channels). The channels are closed off on one side in the stack of plates by an adjacent plate. It is also possible to give the channels a depth that is the same as the plate thickness (slot-shaped channels). Such slot-like channels are closed on both sides in the stack of plates by adjacent plates. In this case, a further connection plate is to be arranged on the end face of the valve block opposite the connection plate 10.
The plates which together form the valve block according to the invention preferably consist of a ceramic material, for example of aluminum oxide. As shown in Figure 1, it is advantageous to design the channel plates 11, 12 and 13 all the same, which keeps the price of the valve block low. If the channels are trough-shaped, it is obviously also possible to use a channel plate as the connection plate, the channels of this plate then having no functional meaning.
The valve block is held, for example, between two holding plates, for example made of steel, perforated accordingly for the first and second orifices, the two plates being pressed lightly against one another. To move individual channel plates in the valve block, appropriate servomotors are to be installed on two sides of the plate stack. When actuated appropriately, they act on one of the channel plates.
In Figure 1, the metering device is shown in a state in which the piston pipettes are connected to the metering tips via the aligned, continuous openings of all plates. In FIG. 2, which only shows the valve block 1, the piston pipettes are connected to the channel system of the third channel plate 13 via the through openings 14 in the connecting plate 10 and the first two channel plates 11 and 12. In FIG. 3, which also only shows the valve block 1, the piston pipettes are connected to the channel system of the first channel plate 11 via the through openings 14 of the connection plate 10.
A comparison of FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 shows that for a changeover of the valve block 1 from a state in which the first and second orifices 15 and 16 are each connected to one another in a state in which the first orifices 15 are connected are connected to a selected duct system, a displacement of the corresponding duct plate by half a grid dimension is sufficient (FIG. 2: third duct plate 13, FIG. 3: first duct plate 11). FIG. 4 shows a top view of an exemplary embodiment of a connecting plate 10. The through openings 14 or first openings 15 are arranged in rows with a distance d. The pattern of the through openings corresponds, for example, to the cavity pattern of standardized microtest plates (with 96, 384 or 1536 cavities).
Die Kanäle 21 münden in Sam- meikanäle 22, die ausserhalb des Musters von durchgehenden Öffnungen verlaufen und die ihrerseits in den Hauptanschluss 23 münden.FIG. 5 shows a channel plate 11 which can be used together with the connection plate 10 of FIG. 4 in a valve block according to the invention. The channel plate 11 has channels 21 which run centrally between the rows of through openings, ie have a distance d / 2 from them. The channels 21 open into common channels 22, which run outside the pattern of through openings and which in turn open into the main connection 23.
6 shows in a three-dimensional detail the channels 21 of the channel plate 11 according to FIG. 5. These channels 21 run centrally between the rows of through openings 14 and are trough-shaped, as is also shown in FIGS. 1 to 3. In order to guarantee a regular distribution of liquid to through-openings adjoining the channels 21, the channels 21 are advantageously designed in such a way that their cross section increases towards the mouth into a collecting channel 22. This is realized, for example, as can be seen from FIG. 6, by increasing the depth of the trough-shaped channels.
