  • This invention relates to a food packaging system, particularly, but not exclusively for packaging sandwiches.
  • Sandwiches are a popular fast food widely sold from various outlets, and are commonly created from two square slices of bread laid on top of one another with a filling spread in between. Most pre-packaged sandwiches are sliced into two triangular pieces and sold in a triangular package. The slices are placed next to one another, with the longest side facing uppermost in the package so the filling can be seen.
  • Such packages are commonly constructed from a clear plastics material, and may have a paper or cardboard label element contained within the packaging.
  • Various sizes of the package can accommodate two, three or four sandwich slices.
  • this kind of packaging must be formed from the plastics material before the food is placed inside it. This results in slow construction of the product because each sandwich has to be placed into the package. Further, this type of packaging may not be recyclable or kind to the environment.
  • this type of packaging suffers from a particular problem. Due to the structural weakness of the card used, it is common for the plastics film to come into contact with the sandwich slices. If the slices contain a large quantity of filling with a low structural integrity, for example egg and mayonnaise or Coronation chicken, the plastics film can come into contact with the filling. This results in a poor appearance, and an unpleasant filling residue being left on the plastics film when the sandwich is removed for consumption.
  • GB 1313950 in the name of KARAN discloses a container for containing sandwiches comprising a body portion and a covering sheet, the body portion including two generally triangular side walls separated by a spacing wall, said spacing wall meeting each side wall along two edges thereof to define a mouth between the third edge of each side wall, said covering sheet being connected to one of said side walls and adapted to be folded over said mouth and sealed to the other of said side walls.
  • the spacing wall is further provided with two planar hinged flap portions at each end which are folded inwardly so they abut the third edges of the triangular side walls, and at least partially close said mouth.
  • the purpose of the flap portions is to prevent the contents of the container from contacting a heat sealing plate during the packaging process, however to a minor extent they also serve to prevent the cover sheet from coming into contact with the sandwich in use.
  • the covering sheet is only held away from the opening by the thickness of the flap portions, it would only require a very minor shift in the position of the contents for them to come into contact with the covering sheet.
  • the present invention is intended to overcome some of the above problems.
  • packaging for food comprises a body portion adapted to contain the food, an opening, and an external wrapping, in which the body portion is provided with extension elements, characterized in that the extension elements are biased such that they extend away from the opening and prevent the external wrapping extending between them from contacting the food through the opening.
  • the packaging is for two triangular sandwich slices, and the body portion is substantially triangular in shape. It will be appreciated that the packaging can also be for three or four sandwich slices.
  • the body portion may be a substantially right angle triangular shape.
  • the body portion can also be provided with an opening on the longest side of the triangle, through which the sandwich slices can be observed and removed.
  • the extension elements comprise elongate flaps which extend from the top and the bottom of the rim around the opening, and over part of the front of the sandwich slices.
  • the external wrapper is held away from the sandwich slices, and can be held taught from the edge of one flap to the other.
  • the body is constructed from cardboard or solid board, and the flaps extend from the rear and lower sections of the body, so that when they are folded over the opening, they are biased away from the opening.
  • the external wrapping can be constructed from a lightweight and clear plastics material.
  • the body can be printed with labelling, advertising or colouring, and varnished on the outside face to provide a hard wearing surface.
  • the extension flaps can also be printed with labelling, advertising or colouring.
  • the materials used are of food grade, are FDA approved and can resist an element of 'fat creep' from the enclosed sandwich.

Claims (6)

  1. Verpackung für Lebensmittel (1) umfassend ein zur Aufnahme des Lebensmittels angepasstes Körperteil (2), eine Öffnung (3), und eine Außenhülle (4), wobei das Körperteil (2) mit Verlängerungselementen (5, 6) versehen ist, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Verlängerungselemente (5, 6) so vorgespannt sind, dass sie sich von der Öffnung (3) weg erstrecken und verhindern, dass die zwischen ihnen erstreckende Außenhülle (9) das Lebensmittel durch die Öffnung (3) berührt.
  2. Verpackung nach Anspruch 1, wobei das Körperteil (2) aus zwei voneinander beabstandeten und im Wesentlichen in Form eines rechtwinkligen Dreiecks geformten Seiten gebildet ist, welche durch zwei im Wesentlichen rechteckförmige Seiten, die sich zwischen jeder der korrespondierenden kürzeren Kanten des Dreiecks erstrecken, verbunden sind, und wobei die Öffnung (3) eine durch die korrespondierenden längeren Kanten der dreieckförmigen Seiten und die korrespondierenden kürzeren Kanten der rechteckförmigen Seiten definierte Rechteckform aufweist.
  3. Verpackung nach Anspruch 2, wobei sich die Verlängerungselemente (5, 6) von den kürzeren Kanten der die Öffnung (3) definierenden rechteckförmigen Seiten erstrecken.
  4. Verpackung nach Anspruch 3, wobei das Körperteil (2) aus einem einzelnen Stück eines Kartonmaterials gebildet ist, und wobei die Verlängerungselemente (5, 6) so vorgespannt sind, dass sie sich dadurch von der Öffnung (3) wegerstrecken, dass sie in Bezug auf die rechteckförmigen Seiten um einen weniger starken Winkel gefaltet sind als der Winkel der benachbarten Ecke des Dreiecks.
  5. Verpackung nach Anspruch 4, wobei die Außenhülle (4) aus einem durchsichtigen Plastikmaterial hergestellt ist
  6. Verpackung nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche, wobei der Körperteil (2) zur Aufnahme von Sandwiches angepasst ist.
