Description

The present invention relates to improvements made to containers, in particular bottles, made of thermoplastic material obtained by blowing or stretch-blowing a preform, these containers comprising a side wall and a bottom connected to the latter, said bottom comprising, in its region central, a multi-branch cross-shaped imprint imprinted in the external face of the bottom wall, this cross imprint comprising a substantially circular central hollow around which radiate the branches of radial extent distributed regularly.

Containers, in particular bottles, thus formed can be filled with a hot liquid (that is to say having a temperature at most equal to about 94 ° C). The bottom of a container thus designed, the material of the central part of which has remained in an amorphous state and therefore has less mechanical resistance in contact with the hot liquid, is mechanically reinforced by the imprint in the shape of a multibranch cross and does not does not deform under the effect of heat.

However, such containers cannot withstand a process of pasteurization of the liquid which they contain (for example heat treatment at a temperature of the order of 70 ° C, for a time of the order of 20 minutes). During pasteurization, the liquid sees its volume increase significantly under the action of temperature and the hot material at the bottom of the containers is not capable of withstanding the increased stress without deformation.

The same problem arises a fortiori, in an aggravated way, when the liquid to be pasteurized which is enclosed in the container contains gas dissolved under pressure (carbonated liquid) - case of beer for example -. The material of the bottom of the container not only must withstand the increased stress due to the increase in the volume of the hot liquid, but it must also withstand the considerable increase in pressure of the hot gas. The aforementioned containers are not able to withstand such stresses without significant deformation of the bottom.

The invention therefore aims to remedy this drawback and to provide an improved architecture of the bottom of the container which allows said container to withstand a pasteurization process without deformation of its bottom.

For these purposes, a container, in particular a bottle, made of thermoplastic material as set out above is characterized, being arranged in accordance with the invention, in that the bottom is, moreover, of petaloid type, with the bottom wall of generally convex outwardly with at least three feet located towards the periphery of the bottom and formed by growths regularly distributed angularly and separated from each other by a portion of the convex wall of the bottom,
in that the feet and the branches of the cross imprint are equal in number,
in that the branches of the cross impression are arranged in correspondence with the feet and aligned radially respectively with these,
in that each leg has a stress absorption notch in its support part, and
in that, in each foot, the stress absorption notch remains radially separated from the end of the corresponding branch of the cross impression.

Certainly, it has long been known to equip receptacles, such as bottles, with petaloid-type bottoms which are widely used for receptacles containing carbonated liquids (carbonated liquids in particular): the radial hollows separating the feet into "petals" are able to absorb the forces due to pressurization during filling and maintain the bearing surfaces of the feet in a situation of coplanarity substantially perpendicular to the axis of the container.

In the context of the container according to the invention, we therefore take advantage of the ability of the petaloid bottoms to properly withstand the pressure inside the container to make it absorb, without it deforming, the overpressure due to the increase in volume. liquid heated during the pasteurization process.

The container according to the invention combines the positive and advantageous effects:
  • on the one hand, the petaloid bottom which supports without deformation the increase in volume of the hot liquid,
    and
  • on the other hand, the multi-branch star footprint which can, without modifying the flatness of the feet of the petaloid part, deform and accompany, by deforming inwards, the reduction in volume of the pasteurized liquid during its cooling , this ability to a controlled deformation of the central part of the bottom (substantially in the area of amorphous material) inducing a reduction of the deformation undergone simultaneously by the wall of the body of the container, which wall is, for this purpose, constituted in the form of juxtaposed panels; the consequence is that said panels provided on the wall of the body can be produced with a smaller surface, which leaves more freedom for the design of the entire container.

The advantages set out above apply when the containers are filled with a pasteurized flat (non-carbonated) liquid.

A fortiori, these advantages are also valid for containers filled with a pasteurized liquid containing a gas dissolved under pressure (for example beer), these containers being additionally subjected to the overpressure of the gases heated during pasteurization.

It will also be understood that, being capable of undergoing without damage the effects of pasteurization, the containers according to the invention are capable, a fortiori, of undergoing without damage a hot filling (filling with a hot liquid at a temperature at most equal at around 94 ° C).

In addition, we take into account the little space available on the bottom to form the petaloid pattern and the multibranch crossprint, by geometrically combining the two patterns with the branches of the crossprint arranged in correspondence with the feet. and aligned radially with them respectively.

Finally, due to the presence, in each foot, of a stress absorption notch arranged as above, when a foot is subjected to stresses, the possible deformation resulting therefrom is situated at the level of the notch which it includes. Furthermore, the notch being located between two projections or studs of the foot by which the support of the bottom is effected on a support, the support points are thus doubled, which contributes to giving better stability to the container.

In an embodiment conferring better rigidity on the central part of the bottom while ensuring it the desired deformability necessary for the aim sought in the context of the invention, it is desirable that the substantially circular central bowl has a depth substantially greater than that branches of the cross print.

Advantageously, the portions of the convex wall of the bottom which separate two adjacent feet extend between the corresponding adjacent arms of the cross impression, up to substantially the edge of the central bowl. But to avoid a central weakening, it is preferable that the aforesaid portions of the convex wall of the bottom which separate two adjacent feet do not open into the central bowl and that their end situated radially towards the center remains separated from the central bowl by a rim , which edges contribute to stiffen the periphery of the central hollow.

The implementation of the provisions according to the invention requires establishing a compromise to achieve a container bottom which has the desired qualities. In fact, the petaloid bottom can, in principle, include any number, even high, of feet. Likewise, the hollow imprint in a multibranch cross can in principle include any number, even high, of branches. However, the fact that, in accordance with the preferred embodiment of the invention indicated above, the branches of the cross impression have a radial extent which makes them arrive, in part, in the initiation of the petals constituting the feet and while, moreover, the branches of the cross impression have a substantial width, it follows that, in the container of the invention, it is not possible to provide a substantial number of feet and branches of the cross imprint. In practice, this number must be greater than three (minimum number to ensure a stable base of the container), but does not seem to be able to exceed five. In practice the number of four seems to correspond to the best compromise.

It should also be noted that the thickness of the bottom should not be excessive, tests having shown that thick bottoms lead to poor results.

To this end, it will be noted that the thickness of the bottom of the container arranged in accordance with the invention is significantly less than that of the bottom with a single multibranch cross impression provided in a container intended for hot filling only: the use of provisions of the invention can significantly reduce the amount of material, of the order of 20 to 30% for the bottom alone and of the order of 3 to 10% for the entire container, depending on the type of container. This therefore results in a substantial saving of money, which makes the provisions of the invention advantageous if only for the sole application of containers suitable for hot filling.

The description which follows relates more specifically, because it seems that this is a preferred application of the provisions of the invention, to a bottom arrangement of a bottle intended to contain a liquid, it being understood that this arrangement can however just as well relate to a container of another type, such as bottle, can.

The invention relates to a container made of thermoplastic material, for example PET, obtained by blow molding or stretch blow molding of a preform previously obtained by molding.

The bottle, generally designated by the reference 1 in FIGS. 2B and 3B (in which only the lower part of the bottle is visible), has a side wall 2 and a bottom 3 connected to the latter.

The bottom 3 has, in its central region, an imprint 4 in the form of a multibranch cross imprinted in the hollow on the external face of the bottom wall 5. The cross imprint 4 has a substantially circular central bowl 6 (which results in a substantially round plate 7 projecting inside the bottle) in the center of which is the button or pad 9 of material corresponding, in known manner, to the housing of the preform injection point. Around the central bowl 6 radiate the branches 8 of radial extent distributed regularly.

In the example illustrated, the branches 8 of the cross impression 4 are four in number, spaced apart by 90 °, for a reason which will be explained below.

The branches 8 of the cross impression 4 have substantially large dimensions, with a pronounced relief. For example, the branches 8 have parallel edges giving them an individual rectangular shape or, as illustrated, edges which are substantially divergent in the direction of the periphery giving them a substantially trapezoidal shape. Their length is approximately twice their average width, and their average depth is approximately half their average width.

The cross impression 4 is formed in the central region of the bottom wall 5 in which the thermoplastic material has remained amorphous.

Furthermore, the bottom 3 is shaped according to the so-called "petaloid" type with the bottom wall 5 having a generally convex shape towards the outside. In the bottom wall 5 are formed protuberances 10 projecting outwardly and located towards the periphery of the bottom; more precisely, the most projecting part 11 of the protuberances 10 is located in the vicinity of the periphery of the bottom while the protuberances descend in a gentle slope towards the center of the bottom. The protrusions 10 are regularly distributed angularly and are separated from each other by a portion of a convex bottom wall. which constitutes a valley 12 of radial extent separating two adjacent outgrowths.

The protrusions 10 constitute feet, the most projecting part 11 of which is the support zone by which the container rests on a support.

As illustrated, the protrusions or feet 10 and the branches 8 of the cross formed by the central imprint 4 are in equal number because, as can be seen particularly well in FIG. 1, the branches 8 of the cross imprint are engaged , at least towards their respective ends, in the feet 10, at least in the least projecting part of these. In other words, the feet 10 and the branches 8 are not only equal in number, but are also mutually aligned radially.

Such a conformation is, in practice, imposed by the need to have at least three feet so that the container can rest stably on a support and by the need to have branches 8 of the cross impression 4 which have a relief and substantial dimensions, especially in terms of their width.

As a result, the number of feet, and therefore the number of branches 8 of the cross impression 4 cannot be less than three, but conversely cannot, in practice, be too high in view of the requirements obtaining correct shapes by blowing during manufacture.

In practice, it seems that the number of four constitutes a good compromise, as illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 5, for a bottle of standard dimensions.

So that the bottom 3 has good rigidity during use, while having a relative aptitude for deformation in the presence of hot liquid, it it is desirable to provide suitable reinforcing elements.

Thus, it is advantageous that the portions of the convex wall or valleys 12 which separate two adjacent feet extend between two arms 8 consecutive of the central impression in the form of a cross until substantially at the edge of the central bowl 6, without however opening into that -this and leaving a slight rim 15 remaining, forming an armature, between their radially inner end and the central bowl 6.

In addition, the most protruding part 11 of the feet 10 is not smooth, but has a depression or notch 13 with a concavity facing outwards. When stresses are undergone by a foot 10, the possible deformation which may result therefrom is then located at this notch 13, called the stress absorption notch.

In an annex, the presence of the stress absorption notch 13 reveals two support zones 11 a and 11 b located on either side thereof. This results in a doubling of the support zones which are not four (in the example considered) corresponding to the number of feet, but eight. This results in better stability of the container resting on a support.

In addition, this arrangement of each foot 10 shows a transverse bar 14 between the radially outer end of each branch 8 of the central cross-shaped imprint 4 and the stress absorption notch 13 of the foot 10 which is located in the extension of the previous one. The transverse bar 14 serves, on the one hand, to stiffen the gently sloping part of the foot 10 by bracing the two lateral edges of radial extent of the foot 10 and, on the other hand, serves as an articulation to the central part of the bottom stiffened by the cross impression 4 when this central part is sucked inwards during the cooling of the liquid. This faculty of mobility controlled towards the inside of the bottle during cooling of the container results in less stress on the panels of the wall of the body of the bottle, thus allowing a reduction in the surface of said panels.

The bottle thus formed can withstand, without appreciable deformation of its bottom, a process of pasteurization of its liquid content, whether it is a flat liquid (for example fruit juice) or a liquid containing dissolved gas. or carbonated liquid (for example beer). A fortiori, such a bottle can withstand a hot filling process.

It will be emphasized that the material constituting the bottom has a relatively reduced thickness, compared to the previous containers (for example reduction of the order of 20 to 30%). The bottle of the invention is, from this point of view, much more advantageous than the current bottles suitable for hot filling, which have a substantially thicker bottom, in the case of bottles of the same type.
