Definitions
- relays with relay housings are known whose corrosion protection consists of a galvanically applied chemical coating.
- the previously galvanized housing are then, for example, yellow chromated or black chromated.
- the corrosion protection is occasionally also achieved by conventional organic coating materials, for example by means of water-based paints.
- the mentioned methods require more than 30 minutes a relatively long process time until the coating is applied and cured. The amount of waste generated by these processes is considerable. If the quality requirements for the coating increase, they can no longer be met with the methods mentioned.
- a relay according to the preamble of claim 11 is known from the document US Pat. No. 2,955,327 known.
- the inventive method for coating a relay having the features of the main claim has the advantage that the joint between two housing parts of a relay receives a reliable, quickly produced seal. Due to the short drying time it is possible to clearly to use smaller systems for coating. The corrosion protection and the quality of the surface of the relay improve considerably compared to the previous one.
- the uncured paint seal By applying the uncured paint seal as a liquid strip on the joint precise positioning of the paint seal is achieved on the joint. In contrast to a large-scale spraying so the paint seal can be targeted and applied without loss or waste. The same applies, in principle, to the lacquer seal sprayed in a targeted and fluid manner onto the joint.
- the paint strip or the sprayed seal can be particularly economically applied around the relay.
- the effectiveness of the paint seal is independent of the adhesiveness or other properties of a previously applied flat finish of the housing.
- the application of the paint seal after the surface coating of the housing is particularly advantageous if the surface coating or the paint used contains color particles. If the liquid varnish seal were covered by a colored varnish layer, the varnish seal could not or only with difficulty be cured by means of ultraviolet radiation.
- the housing is pretreated, for example with a phosphating.
- Adhesion of UV-curable coatings is achieved with all metals and a variety of plastics (e.g., thermosets).
- the paint seal is applied by at least one nozzle, which is guided by touching by means of a guide member on the housing, it is achieved that despite any manufacturing inaccuracies, the paint seal is applied to the joint.
- the accurate positioning of the guide member by touching the relay in the joint - which is a groove to the outside - a precise guidance of the guide member is possible.
- the positioning can also be done without contact. An application of the paint seal at an unanticipated point is thereby avoided.
- the inventive method is particularly advantageously applied to a relay of a starting device for internal combustion engines.
- the coating of a relay by means of UV-curable lacquer is insensitive to fuels and lubricants as well as water and various cleaning agents commonly used in engine washes.
- the paint seal is particularly insensitive to thermal expansion and thus reliably seals the relay housing.
- FIG. 1a shows a relay according to the invention in a side view
- FIG. 1b shows the relay in a side view from the right
- Figure 1c shows the relay in a side view from the left
- FIG. 2 shows a detail of the relay FIG. 1a
- FIG. 3 shows a partial cross section through the relay at the joint between the coil housing and the relay cover
- FIG. 4 shows a similar section of the relay in a second embodiment
- FIG. 5 shows a partial cross section through the relay with two different representations to apply the paint seal
- the FIGS. 6a to 6e show different sections of the method according to the invention.
- FIG. 1a a relay 10 is shown for an unillustrated starting device for internal combustion engines.
- the relay 10 has a first housing part 13, in the embodiment as a coil housing for a feed coil of the relay 10.
- a relay cover is provided, which carries the electrical connection elements to a starter battery and a starter motor.
- the first housing part 13 has at its in the FIG. 1a illustrated left end of a cylindrical annular portion 19, the outer visible end of a relay opening, not shown, into which an electromagnetically excitable relay core 22 is inserted.
- the first housing part 13 has at its, the second housing part 16 facing the end 25 a bead 28, through which the second housing part 16 is fixedly connected to the first housing part 13.
- This bead 28 allows a positive fastening of the first housing part 13 with the second housing part 16.
- the relay 10 has a longitudinal axis 29.
- FIG 1c the plan view of the relay core 22 is shown.
- 31 three threaded holes 34 are introduced in an annular end face.
- the relay 10 is usually to be attached to a drive bearing plate of the starting device.
- the lateral surface of the complete, in the FIGS. 1a to 1c relay shown is coated with a UV radiation-curing paint 43.
- the threaded or threaded holes 34 remain paint free.
- FIG. 2 is a partial section through the transition area or designated as the joint area shown in which the second housing part 16 is fixedly connected by means of the crimping edge 28 with the first housing part 13.
- an already mentioned joint 37 is present between the first housing part 13 and the second housing part 16. Untreated and thus uncoated this joint 37 carries the risk that penetrate through the known capillary effect through this joint 37 foreign matter such as liquids (oil, water, ...) in the relay 10 and this can subsequently be destroyed (corrosion).
- the joint 37 is sealed at its end directed to the outside of the relay 10 by means of a paint seal 40.
- the first housing part 13 is usually made of a corrosion-prone metal. Therefore, the first housing part 13 is painted.
- the paint seal 40 is applied and then provided the first housing part 13 with a paint layer.
- the lacquer layer 43 covers the housing part 13 at least from the lacquer seal 40 to the cylindrical annular portion 19.
- FIG. 3 is a second embodiment according to the section line in FIG. 1a shown.
- This embodiment differs from the embodiment FIG. 2 in that the first housing part 13 and the second housing part 16 is first provided with the continuous lacquer layer 43 and is provided in the region of the outwardly directed end of the joint 37 with the lacquer seal 40.
- the need for this order arises from the fact that the lacquer layer 43 in the Vereich of the outwardly directed end of the joint 37 may no longer be contiguous and thus a reliable seal is not guaranteed.
- FIG. 4 is shown how and by what means the paint seal 40 is applied to the outwardly directed end of the joint 37.
- a first procedure is shown on the left side of the FIG. 4 .
- a continuous paint strip is produced by means of a nozzle 46, which is connected to the outwardly directed end of the Joint 37 is positioned.
- a continuous circumferential paint seal 40 is thereby finally produced.
- a second embodiment for the application of the paint seal 40 is shown.
- the paint is also applied with a nozzle 46, wherein in this nozzle the paint is conveyed at high pressure and thus can be sprayed.
- the paint is sprayed in this example and forms a continuous paint seal 40 at equally continuous rotation about the axis 52 at the outward end of the joint 37.
- the end of the relay 10 is shown in fragmentary form, which has the cylindrical annular portion 19.
- it is also intended to coat lacquer on the annular end face 31 and in the region of the angle 55, wherein the lacquer layer on the annular end face 31 is thicker than at the angle 55.
- FIGS. 6a to 6e the individual process steps are shown.
- FIG. 6a is provided to apply in a step S LD, the uncured paint seal 40 at the outwardly directed end of the joint 37 as sprayed and in a further step S H, the paint layer 43 and the paint seal 40 to cure by means of ultraviolet radiation.
- FIG. 6b is provided in a further embodiment of the method, first apply the lacquer layer 43 in step S LSV before the uncured lacquer seal 40 is applied in step S LD . It is characterized on the freshly painted relay 10 a wet Paint seal 40 applied. After applying the paint seal 40 in step S LD is provided to cure the entire paint coating, consisting of the paint layer 43 and the paint seal 40 in step S H.
- the procedure according to FIG. 6b leads to the exemplary embodiment FIG. 3 ,
- step S LD is first carried out, then the lacquer layer 43 is applied in method step S LSn , and then both lacquer layers are cured together in step S H.
- the procedure according to FIG. 6c leads to the exemplary embodiment FIG. 2 ,
- the embodiment according to the method steps according to FIG. 6b In a further embodiment, the application of a primer on the first housing 13 may be upstream, step S AG .
- FIG. 6e in which the method steps according to FIG. 6c also precedes the process step S AG , after which a primer is applied previously.
- the curing of the lacquer layer 43 and the lacquer seal 40 take about a time between 15 and 20 seconds.
- the seal is then fixed.
- the layer thickness can be applied in film thicknesses between 0.1 mm to 1 mm and cured.
- the seal adheres to metals, other paints, phosphatings and thermosets.

Description
The inventive method for coating a relay having the features of the main claim has the advantage that the joint between two housing parts of a relay receives a reliable, quickly produced seal. Due to the short drying time it is possible to clearly to use smaller systems for coating. The corrosion protection and the quality of the surface of the relay improve considerably compared to the previous one.
The measures listed in the dependent claims advantageous refinements of the method according to the main claim are possible.
By applying the uncured paint seal as a liquid strip on the joint precise positioning of the paint seal is achieved on the joint. In contrast to a large-scale spraying so the paint seal can be targeted and applied without loss or waste. The same applies, in principle, to the lacquer seal sprayed in a targeted and fluid manner onto the joint.
If the relay is rotated during the application of the paint seal, the paint strip or the sprayed seal can be particularly economically applied around the relay.
If the paint seal is applied before the two-dimensional painting of the housing, the effectiveness of the paint seal is independent of the adhesiveness or other properties of a previously applied flat finish of the housing. The application of the paint seal after the surface coating of the housing is particularly advantageous if the surface coating or the paint used contains color particles. If the liquid varnish seal were covered by a colored varnish layer, the varnish seal could not or only with difficulty be cured by means of ultraviolet radiation.
Duroplasten) erreicht. In order to ensure a favorable adhesion of the initially applied surface coating on the housing, the housing is pretreated, for example with a phosphating. Adhesion of UV-curable coatings (UV sealant and UV varnish) is achieved with all metals and a variety of plastics (e.g., thermosets).
In order to harden the surface-applied coating and the applied paint seal particularly economically, it is advisable, after the application of all UV coating layers (wet in wet process) to cure them by means of ultraviolet radiation. As a result, on the one hand the curing process is reduced to the necessary level and on the other hand, the adhesion between a surface-applied paint layer and the paint seal is cheaper because at the boundary layers between the paint seal and flat paint layer, the transitions between the layers combine homogeneously.
If the paint seal is applied by at least one nozzle, which is guided by touching by means of a guide member on the housing, it is achieved that despite any manufacturing inaccuracies, the paint seal is applied to the joint. In particular, by the accurate positioning of the guide member by touching the relay in the joint - which is a groove to the outside - a precise guidance of the guide member is possible. Alternatively, the positioning can also be done without contact. An application of the paint seal at an unanticipated point is thereby avoided.
The inventive method is particularly advantageously applied to a relay of a starting device for internal combustion engines. The coating of a relay by means of UV-curable lacquer is insensitive to fuels and lubricants as well as water and various cleaning agents commonly used in engine washes. In addition, the paint seal is particularly insensitive to thermal expansion and thus reliably seals the relay housing.
