Abstract

The invention relates to a method for thermal control of the profile of a roll in a mill by spraying, over a cooled zone (4) of the roll (1), a series of jets of fluid (J), each forming an oblong impact surface (S). According to the invention, the distance (a) between the middle axes of the impact surfaces (S) is caused to vary in relation to the position of the said impact surfaces over the length of the cooled zone (4) so that the said zone comprises a central zone (41, 43) with a substantially constant pitch and whereas two transition zones (44) extend on either side of the central zone at least up to two edges (13) of the band (M) and in which the spacing between the middle axes of the impact surfaces (S) is reduced with respect to the constant pitch (a) of the central zone (41, 43).

A method for thermal control of the profile of a roll in a mill comprising running control means, between at least two rolls (1, 1') with parallel axes, of a product to be rolled (M) consisting of a band with two edges (13) spaced apart by a certain width (L) and in which at least one roll (1) is associated with at least one ramp (3) for spraying a heat exchanging fluid comprising a plurality of spraying members (A) spaced apart from one another along a direction parallel to the axis (x'x) of the roll (1) and each provided with a nozzle (52) intended for spraying a jet of fluid (J) centred on an injection axis (50) passing substantially through the axis (x'x) of the roll (1) and forming, on one face (4) of the roll (1) turned toward the ramp, an oblong impact surface (S) with a greater axis placed on a middle plane (P3) cutting transversally the said axis (x'x) of the roll (1), whereas each spraying member (A) is provided with a valve (25) operated by a flow rate adjustment system for the spraying of the roll (1) by opening the valves (25) over a portion of the ramp (3) thereby determining the spraying of the fluid over a cooled zone (4) of the roll (1) and the closing of the valves (25) over the remaining portions of the ramp (3), whereas the said cooled zone (4) is covered with a series of impact surfaces (S) whose middle axes are spaced apart by a certain distance (a), and the adjustment system governs individually the average flow rate, by time unit, of the fluid jet sprayed onto each impact surface (S),
         characterised in that the distance (a) between the middle axes of the impact surfaces (S) is caused to vary in relation to the position of the said impact surfaces over the length of the cooled zone (4) so that the said zone comprises a central zone (41, 43) in which the impact surfaces are spaced by a substantially constant pitch (a), and two transition zones (44) extending on either side of the central zone at least up to two edges (13) of the band (M) and in which the spacing between the middle axes of the impact surfaces (S) is reduced with respect to the constant pitch (a) of the central zone (41, 43).
    2. A control method according to claim 1, characterised in that, each flat jet (J) is centred on a middle plane (P3) tilted by a non right angle (k) with respect to the axis (x'x) of the roll (1) so that the corresponding impact surface (S) extends transversally on the roll while flaring away symmetrically with respect to the injection axis (50), on either side of a transversal plane (P4) passing through the injection axis (50) and perpendicular to the axis (x'x) of the roll.
    3. A control method according to one of the claims 1 and 2, characterised in that, in a central portion (31, 33) of the spraying ramp (3) corresponding to the central zone (41, 43) of the cooled zone (4), each fluid jet (5) is directed along an injection axis (50) perpendicular to the axis (x'x) of the roll and that, in two lateral portions (34) of the ramp (3), on either side of the central portion, the orientation of the axis (50) of each jet with respect to the axis (x'x) of the roll are caused to vary, so that the jets of a certain number of nozzles (A'2) of both lateral portions (34) of the ramp (3) onverge respectively toward two transition zones (44) of the roll (1), whereby the number of convergent jet nozzles (A'2) is such that, taking into account their distribution on the ramp (3), each lateral portion (34) of the ramp (3) covers a length greater than that of the corresponding transition zone (44) of the roll (1).
    4. A control method according to claim 3, characterised in that the middle planes of the jets directed to the central zone (41, 43) of the roll (1) are tilted by a same non-zero angle (k) with respect to the axis (x'x) of the roll and the tilting angle of the middle planes of the jets directed respectively towards both transition zones (44) is increased.
    5. A method according to claim 4, characterised in that, in each transition zone (44) and going from the central zone (41,43) to outwards, progressive decrease of the tilting (i) of the axis (50) of the fluid jets (J) and progressive increase of the tilting (k) of their middle plane (P3) with respect to the axis (x'x) of the roll (1), are defined at the some time.
    6. A device intended for thermal control of the profile of a roll in mill comprising at least two rolls (1, 1') with parallel axes and running control means, between the said rolls, of a product to be rolled consisting of a band (M) having two edges (13) spaced apart by a certain width (L) and in which (1) at least one of the rolls of the mill is associated with a thermal control device (2) comprising at least one spraying ramp (3) composed of a plurality of spaced spraying members (A) distributed over the whole length of the roll (1), parallel to its axis (x'x) and connected to a heat exchanging fluid supply circuit (22), whereas each spraying member (A) is provided with a valve (25) and comprises a nozzle (52) to form a fluid jet (J) centred on an injection axis (50) substantially concurrent with the axis (x'x) of the roll (1) and forming, on one face (4) of the roll turned toward the ramp, an oblong impact surface (S) with a greater axis placed on a middle plane (P3) of the jet cutting transversally the said axis (x'x) of the roll, whereas the said ramp (3) is associated with an adjustment system of the flow rates sprayed by individual control of the valves (25) of each spraying member (A) to determine, on the one hand the opening of the valves (25) over a portion of the ramp (3) for the spraying of fluid over a cooled zone (5) of the roll while closing the valves (25) over the remaining portions of the ramp (3) and, on the other hand, individual adjustment of the average flow rate, by time unit, of the fluid jet (5) sprayed onto each impact surface (S),
         characterised in that, as the width (L) of the product to be rolled can vary between a minimum width (L0) and a maximum width (L1), the spray ramp (3) comprises at least three series of spraying members, respectively, a central series (31) covering a central portion (41) of the cooled zone (4) over a length not exceeding the minimum width (L0) of the product (M) and in which the spraying members (A) have fixed directions so that the axes (50) of the corresponding impact surfaces (S) are spaced by a constant pitch (a) in the said central portion (41) of the cooled zone (4) and two lateral series (32a, 32b) extending on either side of the central series (31) to cover, in total, a length at least equal to the maximum width (L1) of the product and in which the spraying members (A') are mounted pivoting on the ramp (3), whereas each lateral series (32) is associated with a means (6, 7) for adjusting the orientation of at least one group of pivoting spraying members, in order to reduce the spaces between the axes of the impact surfaces at each end of the cooled zone of the roll.
    7. A thermal control device according to claim 6, characterised in that, as the mill and the band to be rolled are symmetrical with respect to a longitudinal plane (P2), each lateral series (32a, 32b) of spraying members (A') comprises, going from inward to outward, a first section (33a, 33b) in which the axes of the jets are orthogonal to the axis (x'x) of the roll (1) said first section covering a first lateral portion (43a, 43b) of the cooled zone (4) of the roll over such a length that the total length (L') of the central portion (41) of the cooled zone (4), increased with the said first lateral portions (43a, 43b) is smaller than the width (L) of the band, and a second section (34a, 34b) in which the axes (50) of the jets are tilted inwardly with respect to the axis (x'x) of the roll, said second section covering a second lateral portion (44a, 44b) of the cooled zone (4) over such a length that the total length of the said cooled zone (4) is at least equal to the width (L) of the band, whereas each second section (34) of a lateral series (32) covers, at one end of the cooled zone (4), a transition zone (44) corresponding to one edge (13) of the band (M) and in which the middle axes of the impact surfaces (S) are spaced apart by a distance smaller than the spacing pitch (a) of the said surfaces (S), respectively in the central portion (41) and the first lateral portions (43a, 43b) of the cooled zone (4).
    8. A device according to claim 7, characterised in that the means for adjusting the orientation of the jets comprise two means (6a, 6b) for controlling the pivoting of a group (34a, 34b) of spraying members, respectively on each lateral series (32a, 32b) of the ramp (3), whereas each control means (6) is movable along the said ramp, and associated with a means (7) for adjusting its position in relation to the width (L) of the band (M), and with a means (64, 65) for selective engagement of the said control means (6) with a group of spraying members making up a second section (34) of each lateral series (32) to cover a transition zone (44), at each end of the cooled zone (4).
    9. A device according to one of the claims 6 to 8, in which the spraying ramp (3) comprises a duct (22) connected to a fluid supply system and to which are connected a plurality of spaced apart spraying members (A), characterised in that the spraying members (A) are spaced from one another by a minimum distance that depends on the space requirements in width of each spraying member and determines the constant pitch (a) between the middle axes (50) of the impact surfaces (S) in the central portion (41) and the first lateral portions (43) of the cooled zone (4).
    10. A device according to claim 9, in which each spraying member (A) comprises a tubular body (5) having an outlet end provided with a nozzle (52) intended to form the jet (J) and an inlet end connected to the supply duct (22) via a connection piece (26) delineating a junction channel (24) between the duct (22) and the inlet end of the tubular body (5), on which is placed a valve (25) connected individually to the adjustment system, characterised in that each spraying member (A) of a lateral series (32) of the ramp comprises a tubular body (5) mounted pivoting on the connection piece (26) around at least one axis (y'y) orthogonal to the axis (x'x) of the roll (1) and is associated with a control system (6, 7) of the rotation of the tubular body (5) around the said pivoting axis.
    11. A device according to claim 10, characterised in that the connection piece (26) of each spraying member (A) comprises a casing (26) delineating a cavity with an internal circular face centred on an axis (y'y) orthogonal to the axis of the roll (x'x) and in that the tubular body (5) of the spraying member (A) is provided with a circular journal (51) whose profile matches that of the cavity and housed in the said cavity with a simple assembly clearance.
    12. A device according to claim 11, characterised in that the tubular body (5) is mounted rotatable inside the cavity of the casing (26) and comprises at least one plane guiding surface (53) parallel to the axis (x'x) of the roll (1) and resting on a corresponding plane face of the casing (26) in order to enable the tubular body (5) to pivot around an axis (y'y) perpendicular to the said plane faces (53).
    13. A device according to one of the claims 9 to 12, characterised in that each spraying member comprises a means (56) for adjusting a tilting angle (k) of the middle plane (P3) of the flat jet (J) with respect to the axis (x'x) of the roll (1).
    14. A device according to claim 13, characterised in that the nozzle (52) of each spraying member is mounted rotatable on the tubular body (5) around the axis (50) of the jet (J) and in that the spraying member is associated with means (56) for controlling a rotation of the nozzle (52) around the axis (50) of the jet for adjusting a variation of the tilting angle (k) of its middle plane (P3) with respect to the axis (x'x) of the roll.
    15. A device according to one of the claims 9 to 14, characterised in that each lateral series (32) of spraying members (A') is associated with a means (6, 7) for selective control of the pivoting of a group (34) of spraying members.
    16. A device according to claim 15, characterised in that the means for selective control of orientation comprises a cursor (6) provided with fingers spaced apart (62) and mounted to slide on a support (61), extending along the ramp (3), a means (7) to control the sliding motion of the cursor (6) on its support (61) for adjusting the position of the cursor (6) along the ramp (7) and a means (64, 65) to control the rotation of the cursor (6) around its axis into two opposite directions, respectively, an engagement and a disengagement directions of the fingers (62) of the cursor (6) between the tubular bodies (5) of a group (34) of spraying members (A') of the ramp (3).
    17. A device according to claim 16, characterised in that it comprises a means for rapid control of the sliding motion of the cursor (6) along its support (61), in order to select the group (34) of spraying members (A') to be pivoted, in relation to the width (L) of the band (M), and a means for slow control of the sliding motion of the cursor (6) for fine adjustment of the orientations of the jets sprayed by the said group (34) of spraying members.
    18. A device according to one of the claims 16 and 17, characterised in that the fingers (62) of the cursor are spaced apart by a constant distance (a') that is slightly smaller than the distance (a) between the axes of the tubular bodies (5) of two neighbouring spraying members, whereby the said fingers (62) of the cursor rest one after the other on the said tubular bodies (5) as the cursor (6) is sliding, in order to determine progressive variation of the tilting angles (i) of the jet axes with respect to the axis (x'x) of the roll (1).
    19. A device according to one of the claims 16 to 18, characterised in that each steerable spraying member (A') comprises a nozzle (52) mounted rotatable on the tubular body (5) around the axis (50) of the jet (J) and means (56) for rotating the nozzle (52), actuated by the orientation control cursor (6) of the spraying member (A').
    20. A device according to claim 19, characterised in that the cursor (6) is provided with fingers (62) liable to engage between the tubular bodies (5) of a group of spraying members by rotation of the cursor (6) around an axis and in that the rotation means of the nozzle (52) of each spraying member consists of a blade (56) rotating together with the nozzle (52) and on which rests the corresponding finger (62) of the cursor (6) when the said cursor rotates for engaging the fingers, whereas the said engaging motion determines a rotation of the nozzle (52) around the axis (50) of the jet.
    21. A device according to claim 20, characterised in that the length of the fingers (62) provided on the cursor (6) increases from the inside to the outside, in order to delineate progressive increase of the tilting angle (k) of the jet (J) while going towards the ends of the cooled zone (4) of the roll.
    22. A thermal control device according to one of the claims 6 to 21, characterised in that it comprises additional means (8) for spraying a jet of fluid, respectively onto each edge (13a, 13b) of the band (M), each composed of a spraying member (8) mounted to slide on a support, parallel to the axis (x'x) of the roll (1) and associated with a means (80) for controlling the displacements of the spraying member (8) in relation to the effective width (L) of the band (M) In order to adjust the position of the corresponding impact surface with respect to the edge (13) of the band.
    23. A device according to claim 22, characterised in that it comprises separate means (84, 85) for supplying additional spraying members (8) with fluid.
    24. A device according to claim 22, characterised in that it comprises two additional spraying means (8a, 8b) mounted to slide on a same support (81) and means (82) intended for controlling equal displacements, in opposite directions, of both members (8a, 8b) on the said support (81).
    25. A device according to claim 22, characterised in that each additional spraying means (8a, 8b) is carned by a cursor (80a, 80b) provided with a threaded bore in which engages a screw (81) brought into rotation by an engine (82) and comprising two portions provided with reverted threads delineating equal spacings and in reverse directions of both cursors (80a, 80b).
