Abstract

An optical fiber fixing member having optical fiber engagement grooves (2) and crests (5) between the engagement grooves (2) is molded as one piece. A mold (21) pressurizes glass preform (G) so that the glass preform (G) will not completely be filled into recessed portions (25) of the mold (21) which has raised portions (26) and recessed portions (25) for transfer-forming the engagement grooves (2) and crests (5). By transferring the shape of the raised portions (26) of the mold (21), the optical fiber engagement grooves (2) are formed, with their surfaces as a mold-transferred surface (6). Because the preform (G) is not filled completely into the recessed portions (26), the crests (5) of the optical fiber fixing member have round free surfaces (7), to which the shape of the recessed bottom portions (25a) of the mold (21) is not transferred. In the optical fiber fixing member molded by using a mold and heating the glass to high temperatures, it is possible to reduce transmission losses due to microcracks in the optical fibers and improve mold release and burr control.
