In case if there are more than one output stations in a store, the data stream gained from the input stations is sent to all output stations in that store. In the present case the output stations are order stations which allow a user to generate an order for prints of digital image data. The prints are made at a remote location to which the image data are sent; for example via a conventional telephone line.
  • each order station Since the data gained from the customer receipts contain address information of the order station on which the order was generated, each order station extracts from the data stream the address information which matches the address of the particular order station. Therefore the system is capable of finding the order station on which a customer has generated the print job.

  • the user interface comprises several individual interfaces that can be displayed and that can be called depending on the user's inputs. Furthermore, the user receives, from the user interface, guidance though the ordering process for the order he is working on.
  • the individual interfaces are stored with their respective symbols in the memory (not shown) of the computer 12 provided in the order station. The individual interfaces are then called and displayed on the monitor in accordance with the user's inputs.

Since at least two scanner locations are connected to the multiplexer 44 there is the possibility that a simultaneous transmission of data from the scanner locations may occur. In order to avoid a mix up of the incoming data, a handshake process is implemented.
  • the electric cable 50 connecting the first converter 48 downstream the multiplexer 44 with the second converters 52 1 and 52 2 upstream each order station 2 1 , 2 2 is a RS485 type cable.
  • This cable 50 allows a transmission of data over a cable length up to 1000 meters. All of the order stations 2 1 , 2 2 receive simultaneously the same data stream. The data also include the address of the order station 2 1 , 2 2 on which the customer order was created. Each order station 2 1 , 2 2 has extraction means 54 1 , 54 2 , so that the order station with the matching address extracts those data from the data stream.
  • the result of the analysis is that the customer order temporarily stored in the memory of the order station, on which the order has been created, is now set free for transmission to a central printing station (not shown).

  • the output port 45 of the first multiplexer 44 is connected via an electric cable 46 to a first converter 48 downstream of the first multiplexer 44.
  • the first converter 48 has an output port 49 which is connected by a second electric cable 50 to at least one second converter 52 1 or 52 2 which is positioned upstream of the order station 2 1 , 2 2 .
  • Each of the second converters 52 1 or 52 2 is connected via an electric cable 53 1 or 53 2 to the respective order station 2 1 , 2 2 .
  • the electric cable 53 1 or 53 2 connecting the second converters 52 1 or 52 2 and the respective order station 2 1 , 2 2 is a conventional RS232 connection.
  • the electric cable 50, connecting the first converter 48 downstream of the first multiplexer 44 with the second converters 52 1 and 52 2 upstream of each order station 2 1 , 2 2 is a RS485 type cable.
