Definitions
- the present invention relates to a control device optical for the transmission and reception of a broadband radar. She applies to the control of wideband electronic scanning antennas, to ensure both the transmission and the reception of a beam of a beam reflected by a target.
- An electronic scanning antenna has a plurality of radiating elements which both transmit and receive a microwave signal.
- a transmission or reception beam is formed by all of the signals transmitted or received by each element.
- To orient a beam in a given direction ⁇ it is necessary to create time delays between signals transmitted or received by the different radiating elements.
- To obtain an analogous effect it was known to create a phase delay between these signals.
- the phase shift ⁇ 1 - ⁇ 2 is equal to 2 ⁇ f (T 1 -T 2 ).
- the previous relation (1) highlights a drawback major, in that the phase shift depends on the frequency. In consequently, if the frequency varies, the angle of aim also varies. This beam orientation method is therefore not suitable for a radar broadband.
- microwave techniques do not allow create a time delay between signals other than by creating of the previous phase shift, except to implement a prohibitive device of the from the point of view of space and cost. Indeed, an a priori solution simpler would be to create a delay directly between the signals supplied to the different radiating elements, but that would require circuits bulky and expensive microwave, due in particular to the dimensions essential imposed by the wavelengths involved.
- optical techniques makes it possible to get rid of the aforementioned drawback, by controlling the radiating elements directly by time delays, without going through the phase shift device, these delays being created in the optical field.
- solutions of optical control of electronically scanned antennas have already been placed in action.
- many architectures of optical controls have therefore already been proposed in order to control the radiation pattern on emission.
- An example of optical architecture is for example presented in the French patent n ° 90 03386.
- the local oscillator frequency is supplied at the output of a photo-mixer by mixing the frequency of the received signal carried by the optical wave and an intermediate frequency, then the frequency of the reception signal supplied to the radar processing means, intermediate frequency increased by the Doppler frequency of the received signal, is obtained at the output of a microwave mixer by mixing the local oscillator frequency with transmission frequency.
- the main advantages of the invention are that it avoids the transposition on an optical carrier of the reception signal, while benefiting from the broadband processing offered by a delay architecture and that it is simple to implement.
- Figure 1 illustrates an optical control device operating in transmission and in reception, of the type for example of that described by the French patent n ° 94 11498.
- the signals which result therefrom serve, the emission, to the supply of active modules or radiant elements and, to reception, when generating a local oscillator adapted in frequency and direction.
- a first source L1 emits a single-frequency light beam F1 of wavelength ⁇ 1 (pulsation ⁇ 1).
- a frequency translator T1 receives this light and transmits light at ⁇ 1 and light at ⁇ 1 + 2 ⁇ f e modulated using a signal of frequency f e .
- the frequency translator T1 is for example an acousto-optical Bragg cell for frequencies substantially less than or equal to 5 GHz or an integrated optical device for higher frequencies.
- a second light source emits another single-frequency light beam F2 of wavelength ⁇ 2 (pulsation ⁇ 2).
- a frequency translator T2 receives this light and transmits light at ⁇ 2 and light at ⁇ 2 + 2 ⁇ (f e + f o ) modulated by a signal of frequency f e + f o .
- the frequency f e is situated in the microwave range and corresponds to the emission frequency of the antenna.
- the frequency f o takes the place of the local oscillator frequency for the reception mode of the antenna in the following description.
- the light emitted by the translator T1 is polarized according to a determined direction. That emitted by the translator T2 is polarized according to a direction perpendicular to that emitted by T1.
- An ME optical mixing system superimposes the light from the translator T1 to that from the translator T2.
- the resulting beam has so light polarized in two orthogonal directions, like this is symbolized in Figure 1, and at the different frequencies from translators T1 and T2.
- the resulting beam is extended by a SE beam splitter so as to be distributed over the different inputs of a set of circuits to DCR delay.
- This set of DCR delay circuits can for example be produced as described in the French patent application n ° 92 34 467.
- Each delay circuit delays the light coming from differently from source L1 and the light from source L2. More precisely, according to an exemplary embodiment, if T is the maximum delay induced by a delay circuit, light from source L1 is delayed by one time ti and the light coming from the source L2 is delayed by a time T-ti complementary to time T.
- the times T of the different delay circuits are for example equals.
- the DCR delay circuits comprise a set of spatial light modulators comprising pxp pixels (same number of pixels as radiating antenna elements) and making it possible to control the phase shift and the delay assigned to each of the channel pxp thus cut.
- the DCR delay circuits provide delays in geometric progression so that N spatial modulators are sufficient to obtain 2 N distinct delay values on each of the pxp channels of the architecture.
- the switching of the delays is based on the controlled rotation, thanks to the spatial light modulators, of the polarization of the beams.
- the property of the DCR is exploited, which is to generate, on each channel, additional delays for crossed polarization states at the input. Indeed, if the beam coming from L 1 undergoes a delay on the channel i, then the beam coming from L 2 undergoes a delay Tt i , T being the crossing time of the DCR.
- Each output Sd of a delay circuit provides light at the wavelength ⁇ 1 modulated at the frequency f e and light at the wavelength ⁇ 2 modulated at the frequency f e + f o .
- PDRi and PDRn detection circuits are connected to Sd outputs for example by optical fibers. These circuits are by example made as shown in the bottom right of Figure 1. Each circuit includes a chromatic separator MD separating the light at the wavelength ⁇ 1 of light at wavelength ⁇ 2.
- Light at wavelength ⁇ 1 is transmitted to a photodetector PDRi, 1 which emits a photocurrent of frequency f e towards a radiating element EDI.
- This photocurrent results from the beat between the light at ⁇ 1 and the light at ⁇ 1 + 2 ⁇ f e .
- the transmitted photocurrent is amplified by an amplifier so as to be compatible with the radiated power necessary for the emission of the radiant element of the radar.
- the light at the wavelength ⁇ 2 is transmitted to another photodetector PDRi, 2 by the chromatic separator. This emits a photocurrent resulting from the beat between the light at ⁇ 2 and ⁇ 2 + 2 ⁇ (f e + f o ).
- This photocurrent is applied to a microwave mixer Mk which also receives a signal received by an antenna element.
- a directional coupler CD makes it possible to couple, on the one hand, the photocurrent of PDRi, 1 to an antenna element in the transmission direction and to couple, on the other hand, a detection current of an antenna element (in the receiving direction) to the frequency mixer Mk.
- the set of signals from PDRI photodetectors, 2 constitutes in fact a local oscillator (homodyne or heterodyne) adapted to the antenna transmission direction.
- the signal received by an antenna element EDk is amplified and is applied jointly to the signal from PDR k2 , on a microwave mixer Mk.
- the signal emitted by the antenna element EDk is of the form S (tT k )
- the same element receives a signal R (t '+ T k ) which must therefore be mixed with a local oscillator S' (t '+ T + ⁇ k ).
- FIG. 2 presents a network made up of two radiating elements S 1 , S 2 separated by a distance d and fed by variable delays I 1 , I 2 .
- An angle ⁇ represents the aiming or pointing angle of the beam.
- a plane 21, perpendicular to the pointing direction 22 denoted ⁇ represents an equiphase plane, that is to say a plane where all the signals have the same phase.
- the reception signals are transposed on an optical carrier.
- the system being reciprocal, the condition on the delays to be introduced to pick up a wave in the direction ⁇ is, in this case, strictly identical.
- mixers are introduced behind each radiating element as illustrated in FIG. 3.
- the mixers M1, M2 located behind each radiating element receive the signal in reception and the signal OL of the local oscillator having undergone a delay I 1 ', I 2 '.
- the intermediate frequency signals Fi1, Fi2 result from the mixing of the received signal, at the transmission frequency RF and of the signal OL of the local oscillator. This mixture results in the subtraction of the frequencies and the phases of the signals.
- the phases ⁇ (Fi1), ⁇ (Fi2) of the intermediate frequency signals Fi1, Fi2 verify the following relationships: where ⁇ RF and ⁇ OL represent respectively the pulses of the reception signals and of the local oscillator, c representing the speed of light.
- the phases ⁇ r1 and ⁇ r2 represent the phases received on the dipoles.
- the frequency of the local oscillator OL is chosen outside the radar agility band, so as in particular to avoid the problems associated with aliasing. Consequently, the use in reception mode of such an architecture is restricted to radars with low bandwidth, for example of the order 10 MHz. It therefore appears necessary to make changes to the operation in particular of an architecture of the type of that of FIG. 1, so as to retain broadband ownership to the architectures to optical control using time delays.
- a drawback of the correlation architecture therefore stems in particular from the fact that the use of the complementary delays is incompatible with frequencies f o and f e , local oscillator and emission signals, typically 500 MHz apart for a radar. broadband. However, this frequency shift between the local oscillator and the transmission or reception signal is necessary for the proper functioning of the radar system, in order to avoid the problems associated with aliasing as indicated above.
- the local oscillator OL of frequency f OL is formed by mixing the frequency of transmission with an intermediate frequency f i carried out for example by a frequency generator common to all the channels.
- the two beams F1, F2 are both modulated at the same frequency f e , which is the transmission frequency.
- FIG. 4 This solution, with double mixing, is illustrated by FIG. 4.
- This figure presents the circuits associated with a radiating element EDk, of order k.
- the polarized light 41 at the output of the optical mixer ME undergoes a delay 42 by passing for example through the beam splitter SE and the delay circuit DCR as illustrated in FIG. 1.
- the direct and complementary delays are printed on the same frequency f e .
- a chromatic separator CD is located at the output of the delay elements 42, more particularly on each of the outputs of the delay circuit DCR.
- This CD splitter separates light at wavelength ⁇ 1 from light at wavelength ⁇ 2 .
- Light at wavelength ⁇ 1 is transmitted to a first photodetector PD1 which emits a photocurrent of emission frequency f e towards the radiating element EDk.
- a directional coupler CD is interposed between this first photodetector PD1 and the radiating element EDk.
- Light at wavelength ⁇ 2 is transmitted to a second photodetector PD2 which emits a photocurrent of emission frequency f e to an input of a first microwave mixer Mk1.
- the other input of this mixer receives the above-mentioned intermediate frequency f i .
- the output of the first mixer Mk1 gives a signal of frequency f e + f i , this signal acting as a local oscillator signal, the aforementioned frequency f OL being equal to f e + f i .
- the output of the first mixer Mk1 is connected to the input of a second mixer Mk2 which therefore receives the frequency signal f e + f i .
- the other input of the second mixer Mk2 is connected to an output of the directional coupler CD, knowing that one of its inputs is connected to the output of the first photodetector PD1 and that the other input / output is connected to the radiating element ED1 .
- This directional coupler therefore makes it possible on the one hand to couple in the direction of emission the photocurrent created by the first photodetector PD1 to the radiating element EDk, and on the other hand to couple in the direction of reception the radiating element EDk with the second mixer Mk2.
- the reception signal supplied to this second mixer Mk2, via the directional coupler CD has a frequency equal to that of the transmission signal f e increased by a Doppler frequency f D.
- the reception signal entering the second mixer therefore has a frequency equal to f e + f D.
- the output signal of the second mixer consequently has a frequency equal to f i + f D , that is to say a frequency equal to the sum of the intermediate frequency and the Doppler frequency.
- a signal at the intermediate frequency offset by the Doppler frequency is thus recovered at the output of the second mixer.
- This signal is then processed by conventional processing means for radar operations.
- FIG. 5 illustrates an equiphase plane 51 of a wave emitted from radiating elements EDk moving towards a target 52.
- Each radiating element is affected by a delay ⁇ k , produced in accordance with FIGS. 1 and 4.
- the quantity T represents the time to go and return from a signal sent to the target 53, more particularly for a signal sent from a first group of radiating elements ED1, as illustrated in particular in FIG. 5.
- the second term 2 ⁇ f e ( ⁇ - ⁇ k ) of the relation (11) represents a phase ramp at the transmission frequency, which makes this phase follow a tilt law as a function of the transmission frequency f e .
- phase ⁇ fi (k) 2 ⁇ (f i + f D ) t + 2 ⁇ f D ( ⁇ - ⁇ k ) + 2 ⁇ (f e + f D ) T
- f D is of the order of 10 3 Hz and where ⁇ and ⁇ k are of the order of 10 -8 s, the term f D ( ⁇ - ⁇ k ) is negligible.
- the signals on the different channels associated with the different radiating elements EDk can therefore be summed in phase since there are no longer terms depending on the delays ⁇ k .
- the first term of the relation (13) 2 ⁇ (f i + f D ) t gives information on the speed of the target and the second term 2 ⁇ (f e + f D ) T, which is constant with respect to time t , gives information on the distance from the target, more precisely by calculating the quantity T from which the distance is deducted.
- the relation (13) therefore shows that the signals coming from the different radiating elements EDk can be summed in phase, and this without limitation of bandwidth. The very broadband property enabled by an optical control is thus preserved for reception.
- the dynamic constraint on the optical links is replaced by a stability constraint on the stability signal of the local oscillator.
- a double-mix architecture according to the invention avoids the transposition on an optical carrier of the signal reception, while benefiting from the broadband treatment offered by a optical architecture with time delays.
- Figure 6 shows an alternative embodiment of a device according to the invention.
- the first mixing is for example carried out by the second PD2 photodetector.
- the latter therefore acts in this case both as photodetection and microwave mixing. In this way, the number of mixers is halved for the entire antenna.
- the generation of the additional delays necessary for the inclined local oscillator can also be obtained by doubling the number of pixels of the DCR delay circuit.
- pxp pixels are for example assigned to the generation of the signals to be transmitted and pxp other pixels are each used for the generation of the local oscillator assigned to each radiating element.
- This alternative embodiment has the advantage of greater flexibility of use. It allows in particular to obtain different emission and reception diagrams. The delay law applied to the local oscillator is completely independent of that applied to the transmitted signal.
- ⁇ k e , ⁇ j e represent the delays applied to the transmission respectively to channel k and to channel j on the one hand
- ⁇ k OL , ⁇ j OL represent the delays applied respectively to channel k and on channel j of the local oscillator on the other hand
- FIG. 7 illustrates a third alternative embodiment of a device according to the invention.
- the functions of the two mixers Mk1, Mk2 are inverted.
- the intermediate frequency signal f i is mixed with the reception signal of frequency f e + f D by the second mixer Mk2 to form a local oscillator signal on reception at the output of this second mixer.
- This local oscillator signal on reception is then mixed with the local oscillator signal on transmission, the frequency of which is in fact the transmission frequency f e , by the first mixer Mk1.
- This second mixture gives a signal of frequency f i + f D , that is to say of an intermediate frequency increased by the Doppler frequency of the received signal.
- This second mixing can also be carried out directly by the second photodetector PD2 in accordance with the first variant presented relative to FIG. 6.

Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a control device optical for the transmission and reception of a broadband radar. She applies to the control of wideband electronic scanning antennas, to ensure both the transmission and the reception of a beam of a beam reflected by a target.
The previous relation (1) highlights a drawback major, in that the phase shift depends on the frequency. In consequently, if the frequency varies, the angle of aim also varies. This beam orientation method is therefore not suitable for a radar broadband. However, microwave techniques do not allow create a time delay between signals other than by creating of the previous phase shift, except to implement a prohibitive device of the from the point of view of space and cost. Indeed, an a priori solution simpler would be to create a delay directly between the signals supplied to the different radiating elements, but that would require circuits bulky and expensive microwave, due in particular to the dimensions essential imposed by the wavelengths involved.
Un exemple d'architecture optique est par exemple présenté dans le brevet français n°90 03386.The use of optical techniques makes it possible to get rid of the aforementioned drawback, by controlling the radiating elements directly by time delays, without going through the phase shift device, these delays being created in the optical field. To this end, solutions of optical control of electronically scanned antennas have already been placed in action. Regarding the show, many architectures of optical controls have therefore already been proposed in order to control the radiation pattern on emission. An example of optical architecture is for example presented in the French patent n ° 90 03386.
Regarding reception, beam formation using time delays requires a very large dynamic of all the delays, still inaccessible to the optical components. A direct architecture based on reversible operation of the control developed for the program therefore does not seem possible in the short or middle term. To overcome this drawback, a correlation architecture has notably defined according to the description of the patent French n ° 94 11498. However, such an architecture is restricted to low bandwidth radars, typically 10 MHz. This disadvantage correlation architecture stems in particular from the fact that the use of additional delays is incompatible with signal frequencies local oscillator and remote transmit for example 500 MHz which characterize a broadband radar. However, this frequency shift is inevitable for the proper functioning of a speed camera, in particular to avoid problems with aliasing.
- un premier faisceau lumineux, polarisé selon une première direction et présentant une première longueur d'onde, ce premier faisceau étant affecté d'un retard approprié;
- un deuxième faisceau lumineux, polarisé selon une deuxième direction et présentant une deuxième longueur d'onde ;
An object of the invention is in particular to allow an architecture of the type of the aforementioned to operate for a high bandwidth radar. To this end, the subject of the invention is an optical control device for an electronic scanning antenna comprising radiating elements to control this device comprising a set of optical circuits for creating delays each receiving:
- a first light beam, polarized in a first direction and having a first wavelength, this first beam being affected by an appropriate delay;
- a second light beam, polarized in a second direction and having a second wavelength;
characterized in that the two beams being modulated at the transmission frequency, for each reception signal of a radiating element, the local oscillator frequency is supplied at the output of a first microwave mixer by mixing the frequency of transmission and an intermediate frequency, then the frequency of the reception signal supplied to the radar processing means, of intermediate frequency increased by the Doppler frequency of the received signal, is obtained at the output of a second microwave mixer by mixing the frequency d local oscillator with the frequency of the received signal.
In an alternative embodiment of a device according to the invention, the two beams being modulated at the transmission frequency, for each reception signal from a radiating element, the local oscillator frequency is supplied at the output of a photo-mixer by mixing the frequency of the received signal carried by the optical wave and an intermediate frequency, then the frequency of the reception signal supplied to the radar processing means, intermediate frequency increased by the Doppler frequency of the received signal, is obtained at the output of a microwave mixer by mixing the local oscillator frequency with transmission frequency.
The main advantages of the invention are that it avoids the transposition on an optical carrier of the reception signal, while benefiting from the broadband processing offered by a delay architecture and that it is simple to implement.

Figure 1 illustrates an optical control device operating in transmission and in reception, of the type for example of that described by the French patent n ° 94 11498. The signals which result therefrom serve, the emission, to the supply of active modules or radiant elements and, to reception, when generating a local oscillator adapted in frequency and direction.
In this system the light from the beams F1, F2 is frequency modulated. A first source L1 emits a single-frequency light beam F1 of wavelength λ1 (pulsation ω1). A frequency translator T1 receives this light and transmits light at ω1 and light at ω1 + 2πf e modulated using a signal of frequency f e . The frequency translator T1 is for example an acousto-optical Bragg cell for frequencies substantially less than or equal to 5 GHz or an integrated optical device for higher frequencies.
A second light source emits another single-frequency light beam F2 of wavelength λ2 (pulsation ω2). A frequency translator T2 receives this light and transmits light at ω2 and light at ω2 + 2π (f e + f o ) modulated by a signal of frequency f e + f o .
In an application to the control of an electronically scanned antenna, the frequency f e is situated in the microwave range and corresponds to the emission frequency of the antenna. The frequency f o takes the place of the local oscillator frequency for the reception mode of the antenna in the following description.
Celle émise par le translateur T2 est polarisée selon une direction perpendiculaire à celle émise par T1.The light emitted by the translator T1 is polarized according to a determined direction. That emitted by the translator T2 is polarized according to a direction perpendicular to that emitted by T1.
An ME optical mixing system superimposes the light from the translator T1 to that from the translator T2. The resulting beam has so light polarized in two orthogonal directions, like this is symbolized in Figure 1, and at the different frequencies from translators T1 and T2.
Le faisceau résultant est étendu par un séparateur de faisceau SE de façon à être réparti sur les différentes entrées d'un ensemble de circuits à retard DCR.The resulting beam is extended by a SE beam splitter so as to be distributed over the different inputs of a set of circuits to DCR delay.
This set of DCR delay circuits can for example be produced as described in the French patent application n ° 92 34 467.
Each delay circuit delays the light coming from differently from source L1 and the light from source L2. More precisely, according to an exemplary embodiment, if T is the maximum delay induced by a delay circuit, light from source L1 is delayed by one time ti and the light coming from the source L2 is delayed by a time T-ti complementary to time T. The times T of the different delay circuits are for example equals.
For example, the DCR delay circuits comprise a set of spatial light modulators comprising pxp pixels (same number of pixels as radiating antenna elements) and making it possible to control the phase shift and the delay assigned to each of the channel pxp thus cut. The DCR delay circuits provide delays in geometric progression so that N spatial modulators are sufficient to obtain 2 N distinct delay values on each of the pxp channels of the architecture. The switching of the delays is based on the controlled rotation, thanks to the spatial light modulators, of the polarization of the beams. In order to obtain a local oscillator adapted in direction, the property of the DCR is exploited, which is to generate, on each channel, additional delays for crossed polarization states at the input. Indeed, if the beam coming from L 1 undergoes a delay on the channel i, then the beam coming from L 2 undergoes a delay Tt i , T being the crossing time of the DCR.
Chaque sortie Sd d'un circuit à retard fournit de la lumière à la largueur d'onde λ1 modulée à la fréquence fe et de la lumière à la longueur d'onde λ2 modulée à la fréquence fe + fo.Each output Sd of a delay circuit provides light at the wavelength λ1 modulated at the frequency f e and light at the wavelength λ2 modulated at the frequency f e + f o .
These circuits are by example made as shown in the bottom right of Figure 1. Each circuit includes a chromatic separator MD separating the light at the wavelength λ1 of light at wavelength λ2.
This photocurrent results from the beat between the light at ω1 and the light at ω1 + 2πf e .
The transmitted photocurrent is amplified by an amplifier so as to be compatible with the radiated power necessary for the emission of the radiant element of the radar.
By providing for appropriate delays in the various circuits to delay, check the antenna radiation pattern. Orientation transmission of the antenna is thus controlled optically.
This emits a photocurrent resulting from the beat between the light at ω2 and ω2 + 2π (f e + f o ). This photocurrent is applied to a microwave mixer Mk which also receives a signal received by an antenna element. It should be noted that a directional coupler CD makes it possible to couple, on the one hand, the photocurrent of PDRi, 1 to an antenna element in the transmission direction and to couple, on the other hand, a detection current of an antenna element (in the receiving direction) to the frequency mixer Mk.
The set of signals from PDRI photodetectors, 2 constitutes in fact a local oscillator (homodyne or heterodyne) adapted to the antenna transmission direction.
Indeed, if the signal emitted by the antenna element EDk is of the form S (tT k ), the same element receives a signal R (t '+ T k ) which must therefore be mixed with a local oscillator S' (t '+ T + τ k ).
- digitization at the level of each antenna element and summation of all of these signals in a conventional digital processor for fine beam formation by FFC calculation. This processor can also be remote from the receiving antenna by means of a reduced number of digital optical fiber links multiplexed in wavelength.
- excitation of the pxp pixels of a two-dimensional spatial light modulator by means of these pxp low frequency signals in order to implement a coherent optical processing of the return path.
In a direct architecture, the reception signals are transposed on an optical carrier. The system being reciprocal, the condition on the delays to be introduced to pick up a wave in the direction is, in this case, strictly identical.
In a correlation architecture of the type of that of FIG. 1, mixers are introduced behind each radiating element as illustrated in FIG. 3. The mixers M1, M2 located behind each radiating element receive the signal in reception and the signal OL of the local oscillator having undergone a delay I 1 ', I 2 '. The intermediate frequency signals Fi1, Fi2 result from the mixing of the received signal, at the transmission frequency RF and of the signal OL of the local oscillator. This mixture results in the subtraction of the frequencies and the phases of the signals. The phases ϕ (Fi1), ϕ (Fi2) of the intermediate frequency signals Fi1, Fi2 verify the following relationships: where ω RF and ω OL represent respectively the pulses of the reception signals and of the local oscillator, c representing the speed of light.
The phases r1 and r2 represent the phases received on the dipoles.
It therefore appears that the operating condition is only verified if the pulses ω RF and ω OL are relatively close to each other.
However, in the reception mode of a conventional speed camera, the frequency of the local oscillator OL is chosen outside the radar agility band, so as in particular to avoid the problems associated with aliasing.
A drawback of the correlation architecture therefore stems in particular from the fact that the use of the complementary delays is incompatible with frequencies f o and f e , local oscillator and emission signals, typically 500 MHz apart for a radar. broadband. However, this frequency shift between the local oscillator and the transmission or reception signal is necessary for the proper functioning of the radar system, in order to avoid the problems associated with aliasing as indicated above.
l'élément rayonnant EDk.To overcome the aforementioned drawback, according to the invention, additional delays are printed on the same frequency f e , that of the emission, then the local oscillator OL, of frequency f OL is formed by mixing the frequency of transmission with an intermediate frequency f i carried out for example by a frequency generator common to all the channels. In this case, the two beams F1, F2 are both modulated at the same frequency f e , which is the transmission frequency. This solution, with double mixing, is illustrated by FIG. 4. This figure presents the circuits associated with a radiating element EDk, of order k. The
Light at wavelength λ 2 is transmitted to a second photodetector PD2 which emits a photocurrent of emission frequency f e to an input of a first microwave mixer Mk1. The other input of this mixer receives the above-mentioned intermediate frequency f i . The output of the first mixer Mk1 gives a signal of frequency f e + f i , this signal acting as a local oscillator signal, the aforementioned frequency f OL being equal to f e + f i . The output of the first mixer Mk1 is connected to the input of a second mixer Mk2 which therefore receives the frequency signal f e + f i . The other input of the second mixer Mk2 is connected to an output of the directional coupler CD, knowing that one of its inputs is connected to the output of the first photodetector PD1 and that the other input / output is connected to the radiating element ED1 . This directional coupler therefore makes it possible on the one hand to couple in the direction of emission the photocurrent created by the first photodetector PD1 to the radiating element EDk, and on the other hand to couple in the direction of reception the radiating element EDk with the second mixer Mk2. The reception signal supplied to this second mixer Mk2, via the directional coupler CD, has a frequency equal to that of the transmission signal f e increased by a Doppler frequency f D. The reception signal entering the second mixer therefore has a frequency equal to f e + f D. The output signal of the second mixer consequently has a frequency equal to f i + f D , that is to say a frequency equal to the sum of the intermediate frequency and the Doppler frequency. In other words, a signal at the intermediate frequency offset by the Doppler frequency is thus recovered at the output of the second mixer. This signal is then processed by conventional processing means for radar operations.
The second term 2πf e (τ-τ k ) of the relation (11) represents a phase ramp at the transmission frequency, which makes this phase follow a tilt law as a function of the transmission frequency f e .
The first term of the relation (13) 2π (f i + f D ) t gives information on the speed of the target and the second term 2π (f e + f D ) T, which is constant with respect to time t , gives information on the distance from the target, more precisely by calculating the quantity T from which the distance is deducted. The relation (13) therefore shows that the signals coming from the different radiating elements EDk can be summed in phase, and this without limitation of bandwidth. The very broadband property enabled by an optical control is thus preserved for reception.
In an optical control device having an architecture with correlation, the dynamic constraint on the optical links is replaced by a stability constraint on the stability signal of the local oscillator. A double-mix architecture according to the invention avoids the transposition on an optical carrier of the signal reception, while benefiting from the broadband treatment offered by a optical architecture with time delays.
Figure 6 shows an alternative embodiment of a device according to the invention. To save, in particular, a mixer per element antenna, the first mixing is for example carried out by the second PD2 photodetector. The latter therefore acts in this case both as photodetection and microwave mixing. In this way, the number of mixers is halved for the entire antenna.
In this variant, the functions of the two mixers Mk1, Mk2 are inverted. The intermediate frequency signal f i is mixed with the reception signal of frequency f e + f D by the second mixer Mk2 to form a local oscillator signal on reception at the output of this second mixer. This local oscillator signal on reception is then mixed with the local oscillator signal on transmission, the frequency of which is in fact the transmission frequency f e , by the first mixer Mk1. This second mixture gives a signal of frequency f i + f D , that is to say of an intermediate frequency increased by the Doppler frequency of the received signal. This second mixing can also be carried out directly by the second photodetector PD2 in accordance with the first variant presented relative to FIG. 6.
