Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to electro-ionic motors with Plasmas applied in particular to space propulsion, but also to industrial processes on the ground, and more particularly the plasma thrusters of the closed drift type of electrons also called plasma thrusters stationary (SPT), Hall thrusters or anodic layer thrusters (ALT).
We already know in particular by an article of L. A. ARTSIMOVICH et al ("Development of a steady plasma engine" (SPE) and Meteor 'artificial satellite', Kosmicheske Issledovaniya (USSR), Flight. 12 (3) May-June 1974, pages 451-468) concerning the program of development of the stationary plasma thruster (SPT) and its tests on the satellite "METEOR", propellants of the closed-drift type of electrons or stationary plasma thrusters which are distinguished from other categories of ionic thrusters by the fact that ionization and acceleration are not differentiated and that the acceleration zone has a number of ions and equal electrons, which eliminates any phenomenon of space charge.
ARTSIMOVICH et al.With reference to FIG. 6, a propellant will be described below. closed drift of electrons as proposed in the aforementioned article L. A. ARTSIMOVICH et al.
voisinage de l'anode annulaire 5.An
issu de la cathode 7.The ionization and neutralization electrons come from the
Under the effect of the electric field E and the magnetic field B
created by the
The ionization electrons then drift along trajectories closed inside the insulating channel, hence the name of the thruster.
The drifting motion of electrons increases considerably the probability of collision of electrons with atoms neutral, phenomenon producing the ions (here of xenon).
The magnetic field is defined by the shape of the
- a fairly narrow, high energy component, which comes from the ionization region upstream of the
acceleration channel 1, and - a strongly diverging component, of low energy, which appears from the output of the
acceleration channel 1 and develops in the volume located immediately downstream of theoutput plane 14 of the thruster.
Figure 8a has six curves corresponding to angles respectively 0 °, 7 ° 30 ', 15 °, 22 ° 30', 30 ° and 37 ° 30 'to the axis of the propellant. It can be seen that the ionic current has a peak corresponding to 270 eV, whose amplitude decreases sharply when the value of the angle with respect to the axis of the thruster increases. This main peak is due to primary ions. Secondary ions produced at the exit plane of the propellant form a secondary peak corresponding to an energy from 20 to 30 eV. The amplitude of the secondary peak is practically independent of the value of the angle of divergence with respect to the propeller axis.
Figure 8b shows with an enlarged scale, five curves corresponding to angles of 37 ° 30 ', 45 °, 52 ° 30', 60 ° and 67 ° 30 '. It can be observed that the density of high energy ions decreases very strongly for the high values of the angle of divergence with respect to the axis of the device. However, it still exists for an angle of divergence 67 ° 30 ' a significant percentage of ions having an energy higher than 100 eV. These ions are able to cause damage by their projection.
Figure 9 shows the angular distribution of weak ions
energy and high energy and gives an overall representation of the profile of the
beam. The curve in
It can be seen in FIG. 9 that the
On voit
Figure 7 shows a part of closed drift propeller
class of electrons of the type described with reference to FIG.
in this figure 7
The trajectory of the ions of the low energy component and strongly divergent ion beam, which is governed by the lines of magnetic field corresponding to equipotentials, can have an effect very damaging on the surface of the spacecraft on which is mounted the propellant.
In the case of industrial applications, particularly in ion beam spraying facilities, failure to dispose of a well-defined boundary also causes problems because the beam extends beyond the target and strikes the walls of the enclosure of device, thus introducing a contamination of the coating.
The invention aims to remedy the aforementioned drawbacks and to allow the production of an ion beam output of the thruster with a well-defined contour and an ion density whose distribution is optimized to avoid aggressions due to low energy ions located at the periphery of the beam.
- an annular ionization and acceleration channel defined by pieces of insulating material and having an opening at its downstream end,
- at least one hollow cathode disposed outside said annular channel and downstream thereof,
- an annular anode concentric with the annular channel and disposed upstream of the opening of said channel at a distance therefrom,
- first and second ionizable gas supply means respectively associated with the hollow cathode and the annular anode,
- a magnetic circuit for creating a magnetic field in the annular channel, this magnetic circuit comprising several distinct means for creating a magnetic field, a cylinder head, a peripheral magnetic circuit arranged axially outside the annular channel and the pole pieces peripheral and central interconnected by said peripheral magnetic circuit and said yoke and disposed on either side of the annular channel to produce a substantially radial magnetic field in an output plane perpendicular to the axis of said annular channel,
- a substantially frustoconical tapered magnetic pole piece open at both ends, coaxial with the axis of the annular channel, located downstream of said outlet plane and flaring downstream; and
- at least one additional peripheral magnetic circuit connecting the downstream end of said flared magnetic pole piece to the peripheral pole piece located outside the auxiliary channel, the flared magnetic pole piece cooperating with the additional peripheral magnetic circuit and the pole pieces located both sides of the annular channel to define the shape of the magnetic field downstream of the annular channel so as to constrain the ion beam emitted by the annular channel to remain within a substantially conical zone whose angle at the predetermined vertex is defined by the vertex angle of the flared pole piece.
Thus, according to the invention, the ion beam at the outlet of the annular channel acceleration is forced to stay inside a cone whose half-angle at the top is defined by the half-angle at the top of the flared pole piece, without, however, the half-angle at the apex of the conical ion beam necessarily strictly equal to that of the flared pole piece.
The flared pole piece located downstream of the usual outlet plane of the canal The main function of acceleration is to conform the magnetic field downstream of the exit plan and thereby to change the equipotentials to the outside of the thruster and the trajectory of the ions, so as to make the trip more directional ions and avoid any risk of damage to the walls outside the ion beam.
It will be noted that the flared pole piece is itself protected against attacks by the ions since the trajectories of the peripheral ions are essentially tangent to this flared pole piece.
The half-angle at the apex (α) defined between the axis of the annular channel (1) of the thruster and flaring of the essentially flared pole piece frustoconical is between 30 ° and 60 °.
Avantageusement, le demi-angle au sommet (α) défini entre l'axe du canal annulaire (1) du propulseur et l'évasement de la pièce polaire évasée essentiellement tronconique est de 45°.Advantageously, the half-angle at the apex (α) defined between the axis of the annular channel (1) of the thruster and the flare of the flared pole piece essentially frustoconical is 45 °.
According to a particular embodiment, the flared pole piece presents a curve such that the angle formed by the said part and the thruster axis increases as one moves away from the exit plan downstream, so as to allow a progressive unfolding of the magnetic field lines.
According to an advantageous characteristic, the flared pole piece is covered with a coating intended to increase the emissivity of the surface of said part, to provide electrical insulation or protection against contamination between the annular channel and the flared pole piece.
The coating may be made of a material identical to that of the parts defining the annular channel and may consist of at least one of the following materials: aluminum, boron nitride, silica, aluminum nitride, silicon nitride, Al 2 O 3 -TiO 2 and TiN.
According to one possible embodiment, the magnetic circuit additional device is constituted by a single ferromagnetic ring.
More particularly, the hollow cathode is incorporated in a hole formed in the flared pole piece and is provided with a screen ferromagnetic protection against the local magnetic field.
The additional peripheral magnetic circuit can still include ferromagnetic bars.
In this case, according to a particularly advantageous embodiment, said ferromagnetic bars are made of soft iron and are surrounded of coils whose winding direction is such that the magnetic flux created in the additional peripheral magnetic circuit is directed in a direction opposite to that of the magnetic flux created in said peripheral magnetic circuit disposed axially outside the annular channel.

additionnel.The
permanents. However, preferably, active elements on the plane
magnetic are incorporated in the peripheral magnetic circuit
additional. Thus, the
According to an advantageous embodiment, the
un anneau ferromagnétique unique.FIG. 2 represents another embodiment of the invention,
wherein the additional peripheral
annulaire 1.More particularly, in FIG. 2, there is shown a
embodiment in which the
The
As can be seen in the embodiment of FIG.
in a closed electron drift plasma propellant in accordance with
the invention, the
propulseur.The diverging
The
The same layer of coating can meet these three
Goals. The
TiN.By way of example, the
progressif des lignes de champ magnétique.FIG. 4 shows an alternative embodiment of the invention
according to which the
If we go back to Figure 1, we see that the lines
113a of the magnetic field outside the
The ions formed and accelerated outside of
Generally, in a plasma thruster conforming to the invention, the density of ions is increased in the vicinity of the axis and is greatly diminished in the eccentric zone. The ion beam is better collimated, which optimizes its use in industrial applications and in any case reduces the risk of contamination.
If we consider the histogram S showing the divergence of a ion beam from a standard plasma propellant, it can be seen that the ion density at the edges is not negligible while the density of ions at the neighborhood of the axis remains moderate.
L'histogramme P montre l'amélioration obtenue lorsque l'on
The histogram P shows the improvement obtained when one
uses a plasma thruster equipped according to the invention with
The histogram A corresponds to the implementation of means
