Abstract

The invention relates to a method for attaching wrap-around labels to cylindrical or prismatic containers starting with cutting of a section of a label from a suitable foil material. Then, the label section is shaped or deformed, maximally to the limit of what is reversible for the material being used, at a time immediately prior to the application of the label section onto the exterior of the container. The undulated label section is placed around the exterior of the container so that the edges of the label are overlapping and an adhesion or gluing process is initiated, for example, by reaction and/or heating. Reforming of the shaped or deformed label section is retarded until the label section rests against the exterior of the container along with the permitting the simultaneous progress of the adhesive process to be completed. By proper selection of material and with sufficient deforming of the label section, reforming of the deformed label section is also completed simultaneously with or shortly after the adhesive process is completed.

Description

The invention relates to a method for wrap-around labeling of cylindrical or prismatic containers.

  • Stretch-Sleeve-Etikettieren
    und das
  • Wrap-around-Etikettieren.
For the polyester bottles on the market (PET bottles) for still and carbonated drinks, labels are increasingly being used which consist of polyolefin films. Two methods are usually used for labeling, namely the so-called
  • Stretch sleeve labeling
    and the
  • Wrap around labeling.

Aufgrund seiner Rückstellkraft schmiegt er sich an die Außenseite des Behälters an.With stretch sleeve labeling, a tube is formed that is made of an elastic polyethylene. Before labeling, the tube section is stretched and pulled over the outside of the bottle. Due to its restoring force, it clings to the outside of the container.

In the case of wrap-around labeling, a label section corresponding to a print repeat is cut to length, this label section is wrapped around the container and glued to the overlap of the label section edges with a hot-melt adhesive, the outer side being preferably glued to the inner side. For wrap-around labeling, primarily films made of oriented polypropylene (OPP) are used, sometimes also films made of polyethylene. Wrap-around labeling is currently more widespread than stretch-sleeve labeling.

With wrap-around labeling, the labels must be applied with a certain internal tension, which is maintained even after labeling. The wrap-around labeled bottles would otherwise lose the label if the tension decreased. It was also observed that at high cycle numbers of 600 to 700 cycles and the associated short times that are available for the setting of an adhesive, the adhesive connections do not set sufficiently, but detach again if the film is bonded under tension. One is therefore forced to go back to longer cycle times.

It is therefore the task of specifying a method for wrap-around labeling, in particular of PET bottles, in which the aforementioned disadvantages do not occur, and in particular shorter cycle times can be achieved despite unchanged setting sides of the adhesive.

  • Ablängen eines einem Druckrapport entsprechenden Etikettenabschnittes von einer bedruckten, reversibel dehnbaren Kunststoffolien-Bahn mit einer durchgängigen oder rapportartig verteilten Klebstoffbeschichtung, letztere insbesondere aus Hotmelt-Klebstoff;
  • Umlegen des ondulierten Etikettenabschnittes um die Behälter-Außenseite mit sich überlappenden Etikettenabschnitt-Rändern und Einleitung des Verklebevorganges durch Reaktion und/oder Erhitzen;
This object is achieved in a method for wrap-around labeling of cylindrical or prismatic containers, in particular made of PET, with the following method steps:
  • Cutting a label section corresponding to a print repeat from a printed, reversibly stretchable plastic film web with a continuous or repeat-like distributed adhesive coating, the latter in particular made of hot melt adhesive;
  • Undulation of the label section at most up to the limit of reversibility immediately before the label section is applied to the outside of the container,
  • Folding the undulated label section around the outside of the container with overlapping label section edges and initiating the bonding process by reaction and / or heating;
  • allowing the undulation to retard until the label section touches the outside of the container while simultaneously allowing the gluing process to continue until it ends,
  • the delayed regression of the undulation is terminated at the same time or a short time later than the end of the bonding process.

The term "cutting to length a label section corresponding to a print repeat" is also to be understood to punch the labels out of a film accordingly.

With the aforementioned method according to claim 1, the setting time required for the hot melt or other adhesive is achieved in that there is only a slight tension on the bond point at the edges of the label section due to the retarded retraction of the undulation, which is smaller than that for tearing off force required for the adhesive bond. On the other hand, the material can be adjusted in such a way that a residual elasticity remains, which tightens the label around the outside of the labeled container enough to also prevent a slight shrinkage the tank by relieving the internal pressure.

This ensures that, although no longer setting times of the hot melt binding adhesive are required, there is nevertheless a secure connection of the bond in the area of the label cut edges.

Films which are suitable for a process of the aforementioned type are known to the person skilled in the art. Particularly suitable here are label sections which consist of a thermoplastic styrene-butadiene sequence polymer which has a retarding regression, with a sufficient residual tension remaining. Label sections can also be produced from a film material consisting of polyolefins which have been obtained using catalytic polymerization processes with the aid of metallocene catalysts.

Known wave embossing machines or devices which produce an "undulating" by stretching in various configurations, for example also in a chevron undulation or by stretching in certain closed areas, are suitable for undulating.

Aufl., Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1990, Seiten 139-147.Hot melt adhesives are understood to mean hot melt adhesives, in particular saturated polyesters, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers and polyamide resins. With regard to application and features, reference is made to the book by Gerd HABENICHT, KLEBEN, Fundamentals, Technology, Application, 2nd edition, Springer-Verlag, Berlin, 1990, pages 139-147.

According to the requirements, an undulation is provided in a change in length of 110 to 150 ° of the original length, the duration of the retarded regression to the original length preferably being between 90 msec and 1 sec should be.

Ausführung und Beispiele der Erfindung werden nachfolgend beschrieben:Execution and examples of the invention are described below:

Beispiel 1example 1

In order to label cylindrical PET lemonade bottles with a diameter of 80 mm, 255 mm long label sections are cut off in a repeat from a printed plastic film web. The plastic film web consists of a three-layer, co-extruded film layer. This consists of a semi-elastic film in the middle layer based on an acrylic acid copolymer, 100 µm thick, which is covered on both sides with an outer layer made of polypropylene, each with a thickness of 20 µm, that of the film as a whole Give transparency and rigidity.

The elastic inner layer can also be a styrene-butadiene sequence polymer.

In the area of the lap seam, the film is partially provided with a 10 µm thick polyethylene layer as a hot melt.

The label sections are sent through a pair of gear rollers at room temperature; as they pass through, they receive an undulation which runs transversely to the longitudinal direction of the label when the length changes to 125% of the original length, i.e. a change in length of 25%.

The label sections are then placed around the outside of the bottle within the filling cycle of 0.1 sec, the label sections being initially undulated strongly. The hot-melt layer is stamped on the overlapping edges of the label sections melted at a temperature of 120 ° C. The delayed retraction of the undulation continues, with only very slight tensions acting on the bond point; however, the tensions are sufficient to hold the label around the outside of the bottle. The process of setting and cooling the bond takes less time than the retarded regression of the undulation (0.2 versus 1.0 sec). During this time, the PET bottles are stopped in a transport waiting station. The dimensions of the label and the adhesive areas are dimensioned so that a residual tension remains in the label.

Beispiel 2Example 2

In order to label cylindrical pharmaceutical vials made of PE with a circumference of 200 mm, 210 mm long label sections are cut off in a repeat from a printed plastic film web. The plastic film web consists of a single-layer, flat-extruded printed film, which is made of a 20 µm thick semi-elastic polypropylene, which was obtained by a polymerization process, in which metallocenes were used as a catalyst.

The label sections are sent through a pair of gear rollers at room temperature; as they pass through, they receive an undulation which runs transversely to the longitudinal direction of the label when the length changes to 150% of the original length, i.e. a change in length of 50%.

The label sections are then placed around the outside of the container within the filling cycle of 0.25 seconds, the label sections being initially undulated strongly. On the overlapping label section edges a glue is applied by applying adhesive with a polymethyl methacrylate and pressing the edges of the adhesive together.

The delayed retraction of the undulation continues, with only very slight tensions acting on the bond point; however, the tensions are sufficient to hold the label around the outside of the bottle. The process of setting the bond takes less time than the retarded regression of the undulation (0.3 compared to 0.75 sec). During this time, the containers are stopped in a transport waiting station.

The dimensions of the label and the adhesive areas are dimensioned such that a residual tension remains in the label. All in all, it should be noted that the process allows the adhesive to set without tension, and because of the retarded undulation there is so much tension on the label that it is firmly attached to the container and does not fall off even with an empty bottle due to the residual shrinkage force despite the smaller bottle size.
