Description

The technical field of the invention is that of retainers for artillery propellant charge case.

Artillery propellant charges are today constituted by a case, made of combustible material, and inside which is placed a propellant powder in loose or in bundles.

These cases are intended to be inserted inside from the chamber of a weapon, following a projectile.

When the weapon is adjusted to fire with a large angle of elevation (of the order of 45 °), the case of propellant charge may slip at least partially out of the room before it is closed by the firing plate, thus disturbing the closing and being able cause shooting incidents.

Known solutions to avoid the exit of propellant charge out of the room plan generally specific machining of the room.

This is most often a hollow (called spoon) or a cylindrical machining slightly offset by report to the room. This hollow or this cylindrical surface are delimited on the side of the shooting plate by a surface of support which retains the propellant charge inside bedroom.

Such solutions are well suited to maintaining propellant charges in flexible bags. They are however ineffective in maintaining current cylindrical cases whose rigidity is such that it ensures their positioning substantially coaxially to the chamber, thus prohibiting their support in the hollow or the holding spoon.

It is the object of the invention to propose a retainer for a propellant charge case that has no such disadvantages.

Thus, the retainer according to the invention is carried by the case itself and it ensures the axial maintenance of the holster in the gun chamber even when the holster is finds coaxial in the room.

Due to its attachment to the case, the retainer according to the invention ensures such maintenance whatever the geometry of the room, especially even if the room of the weapon is deprived of means of maintenance.

It is another object of the invention to provide a removable retainer which can be fixed or not to the case in according to needs.

Thus, the subject of the invention is a stopper for a case propellant charge, case comprising an envelope cylindrical intended to contain a propellant charge and to be introduced into the chamber of a weapon, retainer characterized in that it comprises a skirt, continuous or formed of several sectors, skirt of diameter greater than that of the envelope and that of the bedroom and intended for be attached to the case by connecting means, this skirt deforming when the case is introduced into the weapon chamber so as to maintain the holster in the bedroom.

According to a first embodiment of the invention, the retainer has a tubular portion intended for surround the envelope of the case, tubular portion which carries the means of connection.

The connection means may include at least one cylindrical bead carried by the tubular portion and intended to cooperate with a complementary bead worn by the envelope of the case.

The tubular portion may include at least two slots regularly distributed angularly and allowing the establishment by elastic deformation of the bead of the retainer on the bead of the envelope.

Advantageously, the bead of the retainer may have an external diameter substantially equal to the diameter from the gun room.

According to a second embodiment of the invention, the retainer has at least one substantially flat face normal to the axis of the skirt, face up intended to be applied against a bottom of the case and carrying the means of liaison.

The connection means may include at least two tabs cut on the flat face and intended for cooperate with notches carried by the bottom of the case.

Preferably, the retainer according to the invention will be made of a combustible material.

The invention also relates to a case for charging propellant provided with such a retainer whether it is removable or no.

The invention will be better understood on reading the description which follows of particular embodiments, description made with reference to the appended drawings and in which:
  • FIG. 1 shows a half-view / axial half-section of a retainer according to a first embodiment of the invention,
  • FIGS. 2a and 2b show in half-section this retainer put in place on a propellant charge case and respectively before and after introduction into the chamber of a weapon,
  • FIGS. 3a and 3b represent a stopper according to a second embodiment of the invention, FIG. 3a being a front view and FIG. 3b an axial section of the previous one along the plane AA,
  • FIG. 4 shows this retainer put in place on a propellant charge case,
  • Figures 5a and 5b show in half-section this retainer set up on a propellant charge case and respectively before and after introduction into the chamber of a weapon.

If we refer to Figure 1, a stopper 1 according to a first embodiment of the invention comprises a tubular portion 2 extended by a skirt 3.

The tubular portion 2 is intended to surround the casing of a propellant charge case (not shown) and its internal diameter is therefore substantially equal to outer diameter of the case.

The skirt 3 has an outer diameter greater than that of the tubular portion 2. It has a slightly conical shape flared towards a rear part (AR) of the retainer.

The tubular portion 2 carries a cylindrical bead 4 as well as 5 longitudinal slots, regularly distributed angularly, and arranged so as to give a some radial elasticity to tubular portion 2, to bead level 4.

This stopper is made of a combustible material, such as cardboard with or without nitrocellulose, and it is intended to be fixed to a propellant charge case 6 as shown in Figures 2a and 2b.

The case 6 comprises a closed cylindrical envelope 7 by a bottom 11 and intended to contain a propellant charge 8. The case 6 is intended to be introduced into the chamber 9 of a weapon (not shown in detail).

Envelope and bottom are made of material combustible.

The cylindrical envelope 7 also carries a bead 10, which may be continuous over the entire circumference of the envelope or discontinuous.

Le bourrelet 4 de l'arrêtoir constitue un moyen de liaison entre l'arrêtoir et l'étui 6.The bead 4 of the retainer constitutes a means of connection between the retainer and the case 6.

We fix the retainer to the case by sliding it on envelope 7 of the latter.

Ce dernier vient se loger dans le creux formé par l'intérieur du bourrelet 4 de l'arrêtoir 1.The slots 5 allow the radial deformation of the tubular part 2, thus allowing the passage of the bead 10 of the envelope. The latter comes to lodge in the hollow formed by the inside of the bead 4 of the retainer 1.

The propellant charge case 6 carrying the retainer 1 is introduced into chamber 9 of the weapon with preferably an orientation such that the bead 4 enters the chamber before skirt 3, this in order to facilitate the introduction of the retainer in the room.

Figure 2b shows the case after its installation in room 9.

La jupe 3 est définie de telle sorte que son diamètre externe soit supérieur au diamètre de la chambre 9.The skirt 3 is defined so that its diameter external is greater than the diameter of the chamber 9.

The elastic radial deformation of the skirt ensures the maintaining contact between the retainer and the chamber.

This contact generates friction forces and of adhesion which allow the axial retention of the case in the weapon chamber when the latter is strongly tilted.

We will define the length of the skirt 3 so as to ensure sufficient friction. In practice, we will give the skirt a length in contact with the room in the order of 0.1 times the diameter of the chamber.

Advantageously, the bead 4 will be given a diameter outer substantially equal to the diameter of the chamber 9 of tear.

Such an arrangement makes it possible to guide the case 6 by report to the room. This ensures a coaxiality of the case 6 and the chamber at the stop 1, which allows a substantially symmetrical deformation of the skirt by the chamber, therefore a symmetry of the holding forces.

Contact between the bead 4 and the chamber allows also to lock the retainer on the case. There is then there is no risk of the retainer separating from the case upon entering the room or seeing it disassociate by a bracing effect.

Such a retainer can be permanently fixed to the case.

It can also be easily separated from the case and only be implemented at the last moment according to the operational needs.

Various variations of this embodiment are possible.

So we can provide a stopper made of fragmentable plastic when fired, for example in High density polyethylene or Polyamide. We will provide the if necessary, initiations of ruptures on the retainer for facilitate its destruction during firing.

We can also define a retainer whose skirt is not continuous but formed of several sectors (or fingers) regularly distributed angularly.

Figures 3a and 3b show a stopper 1 along a second embodiment of the invention.

Like the previous one, this retainer includes a skirt 3 having a slightly conical shape flared towards a part rear AR of the retainer.

The skirt is connected to a substantially flat face 13 and normal to the axis 14 of the skirt.

La face plane 13 est découpée et porte trois languettes 15 régulièrement réparties angulairementThe flat face 13 is cut out and carries three tabs 15 regularly distributed angularly

Cet arrêtoir est réalisé en un matériau combustible, tel un carton chargé ou non de nitrocellulose, et il est destiné à être fixé à un étui 6 de charge propulsive comme représenté à la figure 4.This stopper is made of a combustible material, such as cardboard with or without nitrocellulose, and it is intended to be fixed to a propellant charge case 6 as shown in figure 4.

La face plane 13 du support 1 est appliquée contre un fond 11 de l'étui 6.The flat face 13 of the support 1 is applied against a bottom 11 of case 6.

The diameter of the skirt 3 is greater than that of the envelope of the case 6 and it is also chosen greater than the diameter of the chamber of the weapon.

The bottom of the case has three notches 16, regularly distributed angularly, and intended to receive the tabs 15 of the retainer.

The tongues 15 thus constitute a connecting means retainer and case.

The installation of the retainer is carried out as follows:
  • the retainer 1 is positioned with its flat face 13 against the bottom 11 of the case 6, the tongues 15 being arranged alternately with the notches 16 of the bottom 11,
  • the stopper is rotated with respect to the case by an angle (here of the order of 60 °) so as to slide the tongues 15 behind the notches 16.

From the manufacturing point of view, the bottom 11 of the case will be preferably made of a combustible material. Of a in known manner, the shape of the bottom (and in particular the notches) is obtained by stamping a sheet of material combustible, such as a cardboard loaded with nitrocellulose.

The propellant charge case 6 carrying the retainer 1 is introduced into chamber 9 of the weapon with an orientation as shown in Figures 5a and 5b, i.e. with the skirt 3 entering the chamber 9 after the case 6 himself.

La figure 5b montre l'étui après sa mise en place dans la chambre 9.Figure 5b shows the case after its installation in room 9.

La jupe 3 est définie de telle sorte que son diamètre externe soit supérieur au diamètre de la chambre 9.The skirt 3 is defined so that its diameter external is greater than the diameter of the chamber 9.

The elastic radial deformation of the skirt 3 ensures the maintaining contact between the retainer and the chamber.

This contact generates friction forces and of adhesion which allow the axial retention of the case in the weapon chamber when the latter is strongly tilted.

In addition, the support of the skirt on the chamber causes a elastic deformation of the flat face 13 maintained by the notches 16, causing a bracing of the skirt which has to increase the contact pressure between the skirt and the chamber, therefore the rigidity of the axial support.

This variant of the invention ensures a holding the case for cases with an external diameter is close to that of the gun chamber.

We will define the length and the taper of the skirt 3 of so as to ensure sufficient holding rigidity.

In practice, we will give the skirt a slope of the order 20%, the length in contact with the chamber can be on the order of 0.1 times the diameter of the chamber.

Again, the retainer can be fixed so permanent on the case, but it can also be separated easily from it and can only be put in place last moment depending on operational needs.

Alternatively, the stopper can be made by fragmentable plastic during firing, for example in High density polyethylene or Polyamide. We will provide the if necessary, initiations of ruptures on the retainer for facilitate its destruction during firing.

We can also define a stopper whose skirt is not continuous but formed of several sectors (or fingers) regularly distributed angularly.

Claims (9)

  1. A retainer (1) for a propellant charge casing, a casing comprising a cylindrical envelope intended to contain a propellant charge and to be introduced into the chamber of a weapon, a retainer characterised in that it comprises a skirt (3), continuous or formed of several segments, a skirt of a diametre which is greater than that of the envelope and the chamber and which is intended to be attached to the casing by joining means, this skirt deforming when the casing is introduced into the weapon chamber so as to ensure that the casing is retained in the chamber.
  2. A retainer according to Claim 1, characterised in that it incorporates a tubular part (2) intended to surround the envelope of the casing, a tubular part which carries joining means (4).
  3. A retainer according to Claim 2, characterised in that the joining means comprise at least a cylindrical rib (4) carried by the tubular part (2) and intended to work in conjunction with a matching rib carried by the casing envelope.
  4. A retainer according to Claim 3, characterised in that the tubular part (2) comprises at least two slits (5) evenly spaced at an angle and enabling the retainer rib (4) to be set into place on the envelope rib.
  5. A retainer according to one of Claims 3 or 4, characterised in that the rib (4) has an outer diametre which is roughly equal to the diametre of the weapon chamber.
  6. A retainer according to Claim 1, characterised in that it incorporates at least a plane face (13) roughly perpendicular to the skirt (3) axis (14), a plane face intended to be applied against the bottom of the casing and carrying the joining means (15).
  7. A retainer according to Claim 6, characterised in that the joining means comprise at least two tabs (15) cut out of the plane face (13) and intended to work in conjunction with notches carried by the casing bottom.
  8. A retainer according to one of Claims 1 to 7, characterised in that it is made of a combustible material.
  9. A casing for a propellant charge, characterised in that it is equipped with a retainer (1) according to one of Claims 1 to 8.
